Update #98 - Thronebutt - February 21st, 2016

It's been a while, but update 98 finally seems ready. While we've done lots of testing on this build over the last few weeks, do note that the changes to this build are 'deep' enough that we can't guarantee it's 100% stable. Over the next few weeks we'll work on update 99, which will fix any issues that come up as 98 rolls out.

Most of Update 98 is balancing and fixes to issues introduced in 97, but the biggest change is the re-introduction of the Thronebutt meta-leaderboards. Nuclear Throne now directly interfaces with the site, and that means you can keep track of your Daily and Weekly performance there.

Thanks for the patience, and let us know what you think!

    Features
  • Thronebutt.com integration!

    Balancing
  • Heavy Slugger Buff
  • Jungle flies now have a chance of dropping maggots
  • Lightning Crystals are now more aggressive
  • Ultra Bolt Damage Buff
  • Some minor Steroids changes (now starts with bullets, starting ammo increase)
  • Huge things can no longer be revived (bosses, etc.)

    Fixes
  • Fixed some retroactive achievements
  • Removed Daily/Weekly from DRM-Free builds
  • Coop fixes
  • IDPD Van Depth fixes
  • Several No Portal Bugs fixed
  • Less freeze frames on Ally death
  • Skeleton now loses mutations properly
  • Lightning can now escape certain levels
  • Mom attacks with toxic again
  • YV purgatory bug fixed
  • Lots of crashes fixed
  • Van infinite loop fixed

    Misc
  • Collision optimalisations
  • Lightning optimalisations
  • Melting scorchmarks depth issues resolved
  • Loadout guns no longer sound like chicken sword and vice versa

As a fun side-note, community member lietu has been working on Throne2Speech, which sort of narrates your Nuclear Throne run using the new Thronebutt. It's still in beta, so it might not be perfect still. We're looking forward to what people create with the new stream key and Thronebutt integrations!

Best game in my library, can never get bored of it. Eventually you'll get tired of playing run after run because of the set meta but the whole time the game is fun as hell and its a rush the whole way through.

Not recommended for diep.io amateurs.

;)

9/10 one of my favourite games, and some of the most fun I've had playing a game in a while.

Note: There is also a mod called NuclearThroneTogether, a multiplayer mod that works quite well.
https://yellowafterlife.itch.io/nuclear-throne-together

Support the development team of Nuclear throne and the developer of this mod by buying this game and buying the mod. Buying the mod isn't mandatory but I would if I could, well designed with very few bugs.

This game is without a doubt one of my favorite games, its quick, has guns, and hits everything just right for me. the ammount of replayability is insane, and you can feel yourself making progress.
sound design is nice and crisp, and the soundtrack is done extremely well. co-op could use a fix that makes it more playable, and honestly more frequent updates. but other than that this game is flawless

(Own it on Steam, most of my hours are in the (fairly shoddy) PSVita port.)

Its basically combine a bullet hell shmup with The Binding of Issac, and you have Nuclear Throne.

TL;DR: FAST, DIFFICULT AND FUN AS HELL SHOOTER WITH A LOT OF UNLOCKS AND SECRETS. BUY IT IT'S AMAZING

Oh boy where do I start with this game?
Let me tell you, this game is HARDCORE. You know Dark Souls? You play Dark Souls to relax after playing Nuclear Throne, that's how hardcore it is.

You start out playing Nuclear Throne and you're like "yeah, whatever, some shooter or somethin', I guess this is a little fun". But then you die. Over and over again you die, and start getting ♥♥♥♥♥♥ off at how bad you are at this, and force yourself to get better. As you progress, you start noticing that this little harmless shooter was not as shallow as it first seemed. It it DEEP, it has SO MANY THINGS in it. Guns, enemies, maps, bosses, secret little things to do and unlock that make you go into a secret-seeking frenzy. You think you're done when, after countless hours, you beat the final boss? Psh, you haven't seen ANYTHING yet. This is the kind of game that you have to experience for yourself, so I'm not going to spoil anything. I only recommend that you try playing this with friends if you're not into searching for secrets on the internet, they might find something you overlooked and vice-versa. Now, for the Pros and Cons section of this review:

THE GOOD:
  • Fast, fun and addicting gameplay;
  • Huge variety of weapons;
  • Level-ups and upgrades that are actually meaningful and useful;
  • Plenty of characters with different and unique abilities to choose from;
  • Unique theme with characters that grow on you despite speaking their own language;
  • A bunch of sometimes extremely difficult to find secrets;
  • Unlocks that challenge you in innovative ways to improve your playstyle;
  • Runs go by quickly and allow for fast gameplays during breaks at work, school, or anything else;
  • A ton of other stuff and tiny amazing details that you notice as you play.

THE BAD:
  • Certain deaths feel very unfair and frustrating;
  • Sometimes, as with any game of the genre, RNG lets you down;
  • The difficulty in gameplay and in uncovering some secrets may push certain people away before they can truly enjoy the experience.

THE VERDICT:

This game is absolute must-play. If, after giving it a real and long try, you end up not liking it, so be it. Chances are, though, if you're a fan of roguelikes, shooters or just FUN GAMES, you'll most likely love this one. Its price may seem a little too high from someone who hasn't played it yet, as it seems like any other indie shooter, but the level of detail and content in this game way surpasses that price-point. Not to mention the countless hours you'll spend playing (and dying on) this game. Buy it, try it and, hopefully, love it.

The 6 steps of playing this game.

1: Start your day off with a decent run

2: Your second run you die halfway to the first point you made it to

3: Get mad, rush through stages in an attempt to get back to the first point

4: Die a handful times more and verge on rage quitting

5: The following run do exteremly well, and your hope returns

6: Repeat step 2

Recommend Nuclear Throne is not an easy task, you must first recognize if you have a deeper problem of compulsive masochism, if you like to suffer, this is your game.

Nuclear throne is a shooter with overhead view and Roguelike elements such as randomly generated scenarios, economy inventory and high difficulty, in which we have to shoot everything that looks like a threat (a "Shoot and then asks" full-fledged). For this purpose we use an absurd amount of weapons (+100) which are as useful as multifarious (guitars, lasers rays, bazookas, crossbows, etc.) and a concept called "Mutation", which is a type of modifier which is activated when you level up your character; there are all kinds of modifiers such as increasing life points, make enemies drop more likely to make or increase shooting accuracy, to name a few.

Nuclear Throne have a lot of charismatic characters with different intrinsic skills; Crystal is a piece of purple quartz whose special ability is activate a shield that bounces from enemy bullets for 2 seconds, Steroids can use dual weapons or Chicken and his ability to throw their weapons at enemies.

The main virtue of Nuclear Throne lies in the constant randomness and our ability to adapt to these situations, sometimes in the less pleasant ways and perhaps an unfair randomness in some sections, but never fault the game itself but rather by the failed approach we give to our plays. Our mission is to reach and defeat the Nuclear Throne, yes, but much matter how, the weapons I have, the mutations I have chosen, the character I'm playing, the arrangement and number of enemies and obstacles on stage. Everything under the halo of a subconscious immutable fluidity and rigor that enables playing with almost no major surprises to a true bullet hell situations.

Perhaps Nuclear Throne is the highest point of Vlambeer as video game developer and in which their dual philosophy of direct fun and almost obscene depth is clearly note, it is a game that can end in 5 minutes, or get stuck for hours trying to discover new weapons, situations, enemies, characters, etc.

Nuclear Throne is hard drug, so beware.

This Game Is Great.
Nuclear Throne is a Top-Down shooter and is NEVER the same each time you play it, after death and restart, you will not have the same map layout as before and it may be harder/easier depending on the run, Great characters with great abilities, but questionable B-skins. The game has a great open/start-up song that i end up waiting to end before i even begin to play because it's too good! Though, I'm not sure what the DLC changes the music to and if it's worth it, the game overall is challenging but rewarding.

Nuclear Throne is an insanely difficult and sometimes straight up unfair rouge-like.
I still for some odd reason find it fun and interesting despite this.
Pros:
➤Wide range of different characters with varying abilities.
➤Quite a lot of weapons.
➤Plenty of different areas with varying looks and enemies, along with secrets.
➤Original & interesting boss fights.
➤Very high skill ceiling.
➤Crown mechanic is weird but interesting and fun to play around with.
➤Lots of Mutations to obtain to keep things interesting during playthroughs.
➤Local CO-OP!
Cons:
➤Early game is quite boring, it takes a few areas to get hectic.
➤The game mostly evolves around RNG. If you don't get good weapon/enemy spawns, or get bad Mutations, you're just screwed.
➤Some deaths can be unfair due to being shot by something off-screen.
➤As with the Crowns mechanic, some of them are just objectively bad and have no use in a playthrough.
➤Some of the AI are just a tad dumb at times, enemies will get stuck on corners and such.
➤Some weapons are just useless.
Verdict:
I like this game. It has a lot of problems, but I still find it to be quite fun.
It's rage inducing and unfair, but that's what makes Nuclear Throne so.. Nuclear Throne.
