Update #98 - Thronebutt - February 21st, 2016

It's been a while, but update 98 finally seems ready. While we've done lots of testing on this build over the last few weeks, do note that the changes to this build are 'deep' enough that we can't guarantee it's 100% stable. Over the next few weeks we'll work on update 99, which will fix any issues that come up as 98 rolls out.

Most of Update 98 is balancing and fixes to issues introduced in 97, but the biggest change is the re-introduction of the Thronebutt meta-leaderboards. Nuclear Throne now directly interfaces with the site, and that means you can keep track of your Daily and Weekly performance there.

Thanks for the patience, and let us know what you think!

    Features
  • Thronebutt.com integration!

    Balancing
  • Heavy Slugger Buff
  • Jungle flies now have a chance of dropping maggots
  • Lightning Crystals are now more aggressive
  • Ultra Bolt Damage Buff
  • Some minor Steroids changes (now starts with bullets, starting ammo increase)
  • Huge things can no longer be revived (bosses, etc.)

    Fixes
  • Fixed some retroactive achievements
  • Removed Daily/Weekly from DRM-Free builds
  • Coop fixes
  • IDPD Van Depth fixes
  • Several No Portal Bugs fixed
  • Less freeze frames on Ally death
  • Skeleton now loses mutations properly
  • Lightning can now escape certain levels
  • Mom attacks with toxic again
  • YV purgatory bug fixed
  • Lots of crashes fixed
  • Van infinite loop fixed

    Misc
  • Collision optimalisations
  • Lightning optimalisations
  • Melting scorchmarks depth issues resolved
  • Loadout guns no longer sound like chicken sword and vice versa

As a fun side-note, community member lietu has been working on Throne2Speech, which sort of narrates your Nuclear Throne run using the new Thronebutt. It's still in beta, so it might not be perfect still. We're looking forward to what people create with the new stream key and Thronebutt integrations!

Update #97 - Clouds and Tweaks - December 15th, 2015

First of all, thank you so, so much for your support during the launch of Nuclear Throne. We know things were unexpected, and we wish we would've been capable of communicating a bit more - but such is the nature of surprise announcements.

While we're not allowed to go into specifics due to legalities and the like, we can easily say that this was by far the most successful launch in the history of Vlambeer, and such an enormous part of that was all of you on social media.

It was also by far the biggest launch we ever did, and that does mean that we're learning as we go. We're super thankful for your patience, and we're going to continue updating the game to address some issues in terms of balance, fix some things that came up before the launch and some new things that came up after it, restore Daily/Weekly functionality, and polish just a tiny bit more.

We're going to switch things up a bit now that we've reached home from PSX, release status on the game, and update 97 in our long history of updates. We'll be lowering the frequency of updates and livestreams permanently, although we'll have more information on what happens on our Twitch channel in the future. For this update, we're introducing some balancing tweaks, a lot of crash and hang fixes and introducing Steam Cloud.

Update 97 should also address problems with OSX and Linux builds on certain configurations, and if everything went OK, nobody should ever have to touch options.ini again. We also learned to never make the default pause menu option 'Quit to Menu'. Sorry!

For next update, we're going to transition the Dailies and Weeklies over to new servers, hopefully restoring those to full function for the first time after the launch. Let us know if you run into any new bugs or problems.

    Balancing
  • A lot of tweaking to the enemies spawning on loop. Difficulty should increase throughout the areas a bit more and desert has been made slightly less ridiculous.
  • Enemy HP now increases less with loops.
  • Lil Hunter now spawns a second later, and looping decreases the spawn time less than it used to.
  • Lil Hunter's weaponry now gets more powerful with loops.
  • Hard mode now starts you out with slightly better weapons.
  • Tiny Gamma Guts nerf, prepared to change it back if this ruins it.
  • Energy Hammer now uses more ammo, spawns later, and deals more damage.
  • Guitar rate of fire has been slowed down a bit.
  • Energy Sword rate of fire has been slowed down a tiny bit.
  • Freak IDPD now has better guns with more spread.

    Fixes
  • Fixed bug that started game from loadout screen with gamepads.
  • Fixed crash on Daily/Weekly load.
  • Disabled 'G'-key that made gamepads unpredictable.
  • Fixed Guardian point_distance bug on death in palace.
  • Wrote better save corruption handling, should stop game from crashing on load.
  • Fixed additional VertexBufferHandler errors resulting in corrupted graphics.
  • Fixed Plant B skin unlock achievement not appearing when not looping.
  • Crown of Risk and Crown of Luck icons are no longer swapped in the loadout screen.
  • Fixed OSX game open crash on certain configurations.
  • Fixed Linux game open crash on certain configurations.
  • Fixed achievement bug with Plant's B-skin.

    Misc
  • Tutorial tweaks for gamepad support.
  • Default menu selection with gamepad is now 'continue' rather than 'menu'.
  • Improved Steam Cloud support.
  • Allow for D-Pad control on gamepads.
  • Smaller Save Icon.
  • Retroactive Steam Achievements for a number of achievements.
  • Certain secret weapons now adjust legacy values in old save files to prevent crashes.

First off I love everything about nukes (atomic bombs), so when I read this title I just had to buy it. I plan on spending a lot of time just to read the words "You reached the Nuclear Throne". If you love action & fast paced games, then I highly reccomond this game, unless you get mad off easily... You will be proud of owning this title in your library.

Every time I lose cause of stupid spawn, stupid AI or anything else that's stupid (Including me!) I want to quit this game, and I never did. It's way too addicting. It has always randomly made levels, which make it interesting, it's hard which makes it hard to understand, leading to more hours played, and it has a lot of stuff to do! Wanted to play a character with two double miniguns shooting in the same time? You can do that, You want to play a character that never stops rolling? You can do that too, the posibilities are endless!

also if u suck then git gud scrub

Challenging and rewarding rougelike experience with a ton of attention to detail and replay value. Much faster pace than say, for example, the Binding of Isaac. Devs are really great people and actively interact and collaborate with the community.

Definitely worth the money. Pick it up if you're into this kind of thing.

I think Vlambeer nailed it with this game. Super action and fast paced. I can't stop playing and time flies when I am. Many different and unique characters keeps this game fresh. When I die I feel like it's my fault, I just need to get better at this game.

The game can get repetative if you keep dying at the same spot. I haven't gotten very far in 8 hours I've played which does make me feel bad but I've enjoyed 100% of the times played so I call that a win.

Pick it up if you want some rogue-ish elements with a lot of faced paced frantic shooting.

Nuclear Throne is a tough-as-nails twin stick shooter that tends to lean towards very difficult, forcing you into situations only some of the most battle hardened Veterans could scoff at.
It'll have you dying and hammering the retry key in a vain attempt to do better, laughing on its titular throne mocking you for even trying an attempt two.
I can only hope someone in the future allows this game to feel pain, and makes it crawl through a microwave tunnel lined with barbed wire and salt, with lemon juice sprinkling down onto it.

There is just something about this game that hypnotizes you, that keeps you engrossed in every detail and creative innovation.

>The art style is simple in concept, but feels intricate in execution

-The game option menu includes the ability to change resolution, and is locked to 30fps, but never feels slow

>Character selection grows as you gain experience and get through increasingly difficult stages

-while character unlocks are quick at first, by the time you get your fifth or sixth character, it will begin to slow as you work your way through the wastelands, uncovering more secrets

-Characters all feel distinct in their abilities and strengths, and make you want to switch often

>Gameplay is fast, don’t expect this to be like hunniepop, where you can play with one hand ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°), but in fact expect your face to be glued to the screen at 3 AM, promising yourself that you will go to sleep after the next run

-"mutations" are essentially a perk system chosen between rounds if you received enough "rads" (exp), and they drastically change how you can approach a level, and in several cases, also screw your entire progress over

>Guns, Guns, melee?

-these are what make every run feel unique in its own way, a random

Now the value proposition

>The game gets semi-constant updates to the gameplay, adding more and more content (if the base wasn't enough)

>If you enjoy the feeling of adrenaline as you know that 1 bullet could send you straight to the start, and losing everything, then this game is for you

>If you have somewhere you need to be, this game is recommended with caution, for you will surely make some bosses very angry with your attendance, and lack of sleep

>If you enjoy fast gameplay, and the rogue-like gameplay, you will most likely sink into hours of gameplay, making ( I almost never say this) even the full price of $11.99 USD (near the price of most dlc mind you) feels well spent

The Verdict

Nuclear Throne value the concept that video games should be FUN, not a chore. It is because of all these mechanics, the place and time this game was made, and the love that was put into it, that I fully recommend this game.

Stay Hypnotized

You love it

I love this game a lot, honestly, I've put a lot of hours into it and I don't find myself getting sick of it. It's really fun and challenging. Being a rogue-like, it's always different each time you play, and that's part of what keeps it interesting.

I received my copy for free but I'd definitely pay the $12 for it if I could.

Pros:
- it has a nuclear throne, just like my bathroom. It makes me feel at home.

Cons:
- you will not become like steroids like the game promised, but your right hand 2nd finger will sure look like him.
- no mater how hard I try, I just don't taste cheesecake.
- it makes me feel at home.
- you cannot eat bullets, or drink radioactive waste regulary, this game is a pure real life simulator
- you can eat your best weapon, the screwdriver, with one click and screw up your life
- I have no friends. (You will too!)
- QUIT READING THESE CONS AND BUY THE GAME...

I SAID BUY IT...

There is nothing I can say about this game that you can't already find in the countless positive reviews you'll find on this page. The gameplay is responsive and consistently engaging. I haven't even made it all the way through and I love it. The furthest I've reached is 5-3 and I died almost instantly on my first encounter with Lil Hunter. I was devastated that I died. I was overjoyed to have made it that far. I was excited to try again. And that's the best part about this game. No matter how much it kills you, no matter how frustrating it becomes, you never feel like it's impossible. It inspires you to try again and develop better skills. Now, THAT's what makes a great game.

I did not reach the nuclear throne, but at least fish can roll, right?

This game is SO HARD, but it's super rewarding when you find that ONE weapon.

Fast paced, intense, bullet hell gameplay makes this a super great game. 11/10 IGN like Skyrim with guns.

This game is absolutely fantastic, gorgeous sprite art, fun game play, high replay value, challenging, great sound track, and just all around a fantastic time for those who enjoy bullet hell style gameplay. Sometimes the map generated or the area in which you spawn can be frustrating because a level might be incredibly difficult with a bad spawn (ie no cover surrounded by enemies) and easy with a good spawn (cover, space between you and enemies.) However with randomly generated maps this is bound to be an issue and if you get a bad spawn and die you just start over as always. With a game like this it takes a lot of practice and patience, I wouldn't reccomend this game if you're not prepared to put in the time to build up your skills in order to advance. However if you are willing to put in a lot of practice then I find it very rewarding with unlockable characters, items, skins, and secret areas as you progress towards the nuclear throne. Overall I definitely think it's worth the money and then some.

You might be wonderin'.
Dinkey!
How the hell can ya write a review on this game if ya have like ten hours in it?

You wanna know, huh?
Well I'll tell you how
It's because in that amount of time, I've done more than I even imagined I could do.
I suck at games.
This game is hard.
I suck at games that are hard.
Dont take that out of context.

Hey generic review

Pros
Gives you that old roguelike feel, accompanied nicely with a great bullet-hell-ness.
Very smooth gameplay
Tons of content
Multiple characters, each with their own unique playstyle that you have to figure out
Fish can, indeed, roll Crystal can shield.
Local co-op, in case you wondered if hell existed
Tons of different weapons, each different in their own way.
Tons of enemies, each different in their own way.
The music is ♥♥♥♥ing incredible
The devs are actively improving the game, and, you wont believe this, THEY LISTEN TO THE COMMUNITY.
CRAZY I KNOW

Cons

Locked to 30fps
Which has a good reason behind it, for they made the game in gamemaker studio, and to make it 60fps, they'd have to basically rework the whole game.

No online multiplayer
Which also has a good reason behind it- they're still working on improving the game, and don't have the time to implement that, also if they did they'd have to rework the whole game, again.

Overall- Fantastic game, buy it no matter what price it's at. Especially if it's not on sale. Buy it when it's not on sale. Trust me, the devs deserve it. You wont regret it.
I give it a "Steroids can dual wield" out of 10.

Fish's throne butt has gotten me killed more often than not.
Not relevant
Just wanted to say that.
Again, I suck at video games.
