Rogue Legacy is a genealogical rogue-"LITE" where anyone can be a hero.

Each time you die, your child will succeed you. Every child is unique. One child might be colorblind, another might have vertigo-- they could even be a dwarf.

That's OK, because no one is perfect, and you don't have to be perfect to win this game. But you do have to be pretty darn good because this game is HARD. Fortunately, every time you die all the gold you've collected can be used to upgrade you manor, giving your next child a step up in life and another chance at vanquishing evil.

This game is like cocaine.
I always tell myself just one more, then im done. I'll do homework. I'll sleep. I'll eat something.
But you know what? That last death was cheap, I'll do one more to make up for it. I just need 1000 gold for that upgrade, I'll just do one more to get it. Always just one more.

Things I like:

+The RPG elements are well done. -- As you gain gold you can purchase upgrades, which also build a castle. As you build it further, you unlock more upgrades. It is a very satisfying spin on upgrades. Additionally there is a good variety of gear and runes which allow for some really interesting build options

+The game is witty and has flavor. -- there are various conditions your new characters can have such as being blind, gay or having a fear of chickens, amongst many, many others. Dying is in this sense, pretty fun. On top of that there are many elements of the game that just give it a certain charm.

+The controls are very tight -- this game has good controls. It's easy to do what you want, which is good because it's very tough and you will die a lot.

What I didn't like:
- The bosses in new game plus don't get harder -- As you progress into new game + or ++ or +++ and beyond, the bosses don't scale well, despite the general enemies leveling up to basically become bosses themselves. Not a huge deal, but it's the only negative I have.

Then at some point you realize you've beaten the game, Thankfully there is a new game plus.
Maybe just one more playthrough...

If nothing else, Rogue Legacy gets points for having probably the best setup for a roguelike possible. You hail from a long line of adventurers, delving into the ever-shifting halls of a forgotten castle, and when you die, you take on the role of one of your children, random class and quirks and all. The story fully utilizes this setup as well, which is really cool when (if) you reach the end and see how it all ties together. It would be a shame if that hook was wasted, but luckily the game is a pretty solid platformer and roguelike to boot.

Before each run, you get the option to upgrade your manor, buy new gear and enchantments, and lock down the castle. The first two should be obvious, allowing you to customize and upgrade your heroes through the unfortunate generations. The third lets you enter the same castle layout as your last hero did, at the cost of most of their gold. It's an interesting feature that's not common among roguelikes, adding a layer of strategy that gives you a better shot at finding specific upgrades or reaching bosses at the cost of your other treasures.

The actual platforming inside the procedurally-generated castle is probably the weakest part of the game, but by no means bad. The tradeoff for randomization seems to be very simple room layouts, mostly spruced up by liberal application of breakables and traps. There are special challenge rooms, miniboss rooms, and stranger secret rooms to find as well which help keep exploration fresh. However, the game can be pretty aggressive about murdering you with its elaborate traps and vicious enemies. Each of the four wings of the castle has a general difficulty level, but it can be hard to tell where exactly you fit at the moment, especially if the place has not been kind with upgrades. My first dozen generations passed without finding a new sword, for example.

There's a certain attitude to the game, as well. NPCs enjoy berating you for failing at nigh-impossible tasks, and challenge rooms will happily trick you into failing them with cheekily-placed monsters and spikes. It feels like a very mean game at times, especially if you're not doing well. But if you stick with it, learn to synergize your gear with your class, and grab all the treasure you can, it'll end up being one of the more rewarding games to complete.

Let me begin by saying that this game was truly a welcome surprise, I expected not to like it and boy did it prove me wrong...

So, what is it ? Is it really a rogue like ??? oh sure, in a sense... I mean there is no real save and you restart your adventures in a procedurally created dungeon every time... on the other hand not really because you actually do improve each time over and thats a fundamental no-no for rogue likes....

At the end of the day its a hybrid, that will appeal more to non rogue-like fanatics, rather than the true fans of that genre.

The thing is that if you look past all that, its a truly fast paced, fun-filled plat-former that will make you swear, cry and smile every-time you give it a go and believe me you will give it a go and another and another and so on... its so compelling to just try to do a bit better each time.

The main concept of the game is that each time you die you can start over with one of your descendants all of whom carry over the abilities of their ancestors (and their flaws). So you gather money with each run and but abilities and equipment and each generation is a bit stronger - mind you you cant keep your gold (or at least most of it) between runs, since you need pay death each time you enter the dungeon (except in cases where you have found a special item that you turn on instead of gold).

A similarity to rogue like games is that it starts out very hard and that will frustrate most players (but you will come back for more). However as you progress and improve it becomes easier and I must say (this is one of my grievances with it) after a point it becomes, perhaps too easy.

The bosses are somewhat easy (with the exception of the four special bosses that are insanely hard - but those are not necessary to finish the game) and each new play-through increases the difficult (ala Dark Souls New Game +1 ect).

One thing that ticked me off, which becomes apparent when you master it, is that it is actually short and it really makes you yearn for more.... perhaps with some expansion or dlc but you would like to do more much more (and this is another point where it differs dramatically with true rogue-likes).

The graphics are pix-elated but beautiful and the retro style suits it so well, the music can get a tad annoying at times but then again its very reminiscent of 8-bit era game music.

Overall I have to say I loved the game and I truly wish it had more to offer, but it doesn't. Is it worth playing in spite of that ? Hell yes - its so much fun....

But after 5 play-throughs and all achievements equipment the only thing left was the special bosses. I did spent the time to kill one of them but its for the true hardcores... perhaps I may go back and try them again for the achievements alone, but at this stage there isn't a lot of re-playability.

Again, regardless of any shortcoming I described, its so much fun and totally worth it (which is why its a bit disappointing at the end).

Rogue Legacy has an interesting premise, whenever you die, your offspring take over, the only problem is you children might have something wrong with them, making it a challenge when you die. Obviously based on the title the game is Rogue-lite, the animation is retro, and the gameplay is 2D, though it isn't badly made. I like the concept and having the dungeon completely change every time you die and your child takes over, makes the game a fun and unique challenge. Really good concept, and fun to play.
