About This Game

Rogue Legacy is a genealogical rogue-"LITE" where anyone can be a hero.

Each time you die, your child will succeed you. Every child is unique. One child might be colorblind, another might have vertigo-- they could even be a dwarf.

That's OK, because no one is perfect, and you don't have to be perfect to win this game. But you do have to be pretty darn good because this game is HARD. Fortunately, every time you die all the gold you've collected can be used to upgrade you manor, giving your next child a step up in life and another chance at vanquishing evil.

But you shouldn't listen to me. You should check out the trailer. It explains the game better then I ever could.

If you really want to READ about this game though, then you should check out our bullet list below.
  • Here's what Rogue Legacy IS:
  • A procedurally generated adventure. Explore new castles with every life.
  • Rogue-lite. Your character dies, but with each passing your lineage grows and becomes stronger.
  • Tons of unique traits that makes each playthrough special. Ever wanted to be dyslexic? Now you can!
  • More than 8 classes to choose from (9)! Each class has unique abilities that change the way you play the game.
  • Over 60 different enemies to test your skills against. Hope you like palette-swaps!
  • Massive, expandable skill tree. Rack in the loot to upgrade your manor and give your successors a cutting edge.
  • Oh yeah, there's a Blacksmith and an Enchantress shop but we forgot to show them in the trailer...
  • Equip your heroes with powerful weaponry and armor. Or gain new abilities like flight, dash, and air jumping.
  • Tons of secrets and easter eggs to uncover... or are there? Yes there are.
  • Got a controller? Play with a controller. Big Picture ready.
  • Clowns.

Rogue Legacy is a classic platformer with an amazing upgrade system that makes it feel like you're making tangible progress with each playthrough. After each run you use the money earned to purchase important, permanent upgrades (new classes, improved stats, better equipment, etc). Although it is very fun, the upgrades get very expensive causing some runs to feel like a waste (you lose any unspent money.) Also, the controls are not perfect and many deaths felt cheap and caused me a lot of frustration. But overall, this game is highly recommended.

PROS
+ Brilliant upgrade and progression system
+ Exploring the castle is fun and exciting
+ Each run feels very different
+ Each character has random, game-altering (sometimes hilarious) traits
+ Lots of upgrades make progression fun and interesting
+ Charming characters, good graphics and sound

CONS
- Controls are not perfect, even with a gamepad
- Frequently felt like many deaths were cheap and beyond my control
- Progression may seem too slow for some
- Expensive upgrades render many runs a complete waste

Ever wanted to play the original castlevania but unfair level design? Me neither!

This game is just another unbalanced random generation game and is not only artificially difficult most of the time, but is one of the few that are designed to be very unrewarding.

One of the best 2d platformers I have played. This game has a bit of a ghost and goblins feel with some lvl up elements. Each playthrough is diferent and this game is a bit hard.

Played it for over 17 hours and probably more after this review.

I initially bought this game as a side-game when I was waiting for my League of Legends queue times and it looked really appealing to me. Next thing you know, I play only this game for over five hours with no interruption. It's highly addicting and can actually be hard to get in to mechanically speaking. But if you are planning to buy this game, I'd say it's worth every dime.

The classes are great and the fact that they give you random choices after every death makes it so that you can try different classes with different combinations of weapons and traits. It always feels refreshing whenever you play a new class. And the traits that you get can sometimes give you great advantages but can also be there for comedic purposes, such as I.B.S (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). It basically makes you fart occasionally when you jump or dash which is hilarious.

There is so much more I could tell you about this game, but I recommend this game to anyone that likes grinding or also just enjoy a simple game that is fun to play occasionally. I, on the other hand have some grinding to do right now!

Pretty fun game for those who like GBA-Castlevania and the likes, or just platformers in general.
The 'trait' and 'inheritance' system is pretty cool and unique, and adds up to the simple and effective combat.
It's not easy, but not nearly impossible. Or it can be extremely hard, if you're that kind of player.
Plenty of things to do, monsters to kill and things to collect. Definitely worth the investment.

5 reasons I love this game:
1. It is simple, yet addicting. You could just play a quick run for 10 minutes or you can play for hours on end to earn upgrades and try and make more progress in the castle.
2. You will always have more milestones to reach. When you're starting out, struggling to defeat enemies, and have no mastery of the controls you will be motivated just to have runs that contribute anything to your game. Whatever money you make is lost if you don't spend it, and everytime you buy an upgrade, the cost of all the upgrades available slightly increases.
You're motivation is just to improve, however you can. Strive for runs where you get just far enough to afford something that can make your situation a bit easier. As you start to acquire upgrades and get used to the controls, you find you can make more money, but you also need to earn more to keep upgrading your characters. Then you may get far enough to fight the area boss, but you will probably get decimated by them. So you're goal is to fight them more, to learn their patterns and try to defeat them.
Then you finally defeat the boss, but you have 3 other areas to explore, which means going deeper in the castle to fight tougher enemies and surviving enough to challenge 3 more bosses, who will also demand a similar learning curve and challenge you to reach them while earning upgrades to increase your chances. This excellent pacing makes it so the game is constantly rewarding.
3. The game has a lot of variety thanks to the randomized layouts, traits, character classes, and rune/weapon unlocks. It's really fun to experiment with different classes and test out new gear and runes. There are also a large variety of enemies with various patterns to keep you on your toes.
4. This game has a nice metrovanian art style and a good soundtrack as well. I especially like Ponce de Leon's theme.
5. Unlimited New Game +'s. Nuff said.

Finished the first playthrough in about 3 hours with my godlike platformer skill.
More likely with the experience from excessive playing of the castlevania series!

Pro:
- Nice graphics; retro looking, but fluent and pleasing to watch
- good music; relaxed to energizing 8bit soundtrack
- progression is logical; you loose your gold upon entering the "dungeon", everything you earn until dying can be spent on upgrades for your next run, thus, your "children" will gain more and more power and will be able to explore the castle further, gain more gold for upgrades and equip and so forth
- controls are responsive and not too complicated. I recommend a controller, but a keyboard can do just fine
- humor is "special" as are your heroes

cons:
- progression depends on your platforming skill. HARD. Before getting used to the controls and the feeling of jumps and attacks, you will die against everything. And if you die before collecting enough gold for an upgrade, the life of the sad lad and the run was complete time wasting. Better git gut or struggle the feel of a grindfest.

- Thats the only con i can give you for a 1.50€ game, if you like platformers and are able to learn quick, just give it a go. If you manage to quit before 2 hours, get your refund. I could not quit...

Get it when its on sale, its a very addicting, solid rogue type game. This is my first and although it was frustrating at first, i couldn't stop playing and progressing my character.

Requires alot of skill and patience

**Update**

Forget, waiting for a sale, get it now. The amount of hours i put into this game is shocking to me. At first i dropped this game, but then i'd find my mind wandering to it later on.

What i didn't realize at first was how clean the controls and movements are in this game. The only issue i had was turning left and right quickly but it did not defer me from continuing this game.

Throughout the game, there is a clear objective to grind towards while at the same time not neccessary becuase the game depends largely on skill as well. Everytime you die, it is not overly frustrating because you are constantly progressing your character in some way. It does not become repetitive as fast as i'd expect because all the maps are randomly generated and I find myself always finding better ways to maneuver and efficiently kill the monsters

I've been dropping an hour or two easily a day into this game and has been a few interesting experience for me so it's defnitely worth the money.

-note- i play with a PS3 controller

One of the best rogue-likes I have ever played, if not the best. This game is very fair, no cheap tricks or absurd situations to prevent you from winning. Success is determined by your skill and how you choose to upgrade the manor, armor and runes. However, you can expect to die a significant amount in this game but unlike most other rogue-likes where you lose your progress when you die, in Rogue Legacy dying is actually a part of how you procede through the game (technically you can beat the game without dying but it is extremely difficult). The game's combat system is very well balanced and places a large focus on using abilities and hero classes properly. The level generation is also very good, I have played through the castle inumerable times and never once has it looked the same. However, the best part of the game for me are the hero's random conditions, they add a new level of entertainment to the gameplay and serve to keep it fresh as well as to provide humor (for those who find IBS hilarious). If you are a fan of rogue-likes then this game will not disappoint.

Rogue Legacy is a roguelike platformer that combines elements of games like Castlevania, Dark Souls and various roguelike titles, as such it is a pretty harsh game with a steep learning curve. If platforming and a fair challenge are your thing then I can't recommend this game enough.

The premise involves some dude who does a thing that I won't spoil regardless of how early it happens, said event will be explained throughout the game via the diary entry rooms. Anyway, after completing the tutorial you take the reins of a knight with underwhelming combat strength and set off to explore a randomized castle. Unless you have godlike natural talent then you will most likely die fairly early on, this is where the game's most interesting mechanic comes into play, leveling.

As you progress through each room you will slay monsters and destroy furniture which will reward you with gold, meat and mana potions. Gold is almost useless within the walls of the castle outside of the minigame rooms and is primarily only useful upon your death. You see, once the cold embrace of death takes you, your gold is then inherited by your decendants. They can then use the gold to build up your family manor.

Each upgrade to the manor will increase the stats of each decendant born after the upgrade is purchased. Early on you'll be more focused on purchasing several NPCs used to upgrade your gear or locking the current castle layout for the next heir. But afterward you will want to start buying upgrades to your stats, I for one usually ignore mana and go straight for attach, health and crit rate/damage.

Sometimes you will even find a treasure chest which may contain runes and blueprints. These are useful when you die as you can give them to NPCs in order to forge new armour and equip new runes. Armour being self explanatory lets look at runes, runes are extremely useful in a variety of situations and you can equip one into each armour slot and your weapon slot on top of your equipment. Some runes allow for extra jumps, a dash ability, movement speed and several other mobility boosts. Others affect the castle more than you, for example there's one that boosts how much gold you recieve but at the cost of making the enemies stronger.

There are tons of mechanics to discover and master and the game rewards skill. One of my most memorable gaming moments came from this game when I unlocked the achievement for beating it with less than x amount of deaths. I was on my last life fighting the last boss and he killed me, or so I thought. My character went into the death animation and got back up whereupon I slew the boss. It was such a huge rush as if I failed I would have had to reset my save.

TL;DR

Rogue Legacy is hard but fair, if you like Metroidvania style games with a bit of challenge, go for it. If not, maybe give it a miss until a sale and give it a go.
