About This Game

Rogue Legacy is a genealogical rogue-"LITE" where anyone can be a hero.

Each time you die, your child will succeed you. Every child is unique. One child might be colorblind, another might have vertigo-- they could even be a dwarf.

That's OK, because no one is perfect, and you don't have to be perfect to win this game. But you do have to be pretty darn good because this game is HARD. Fortunately, every time you die all the gold you've collected can be used to upgrade you manor, giving your next child a step up in life and another chance at vanquishing evil.

But you shouldn't listen to me. You should check out the trailer. It explains the game better then I ever could.

If you really want to READ about this game though, then you should check out our bullet list below.
  • Here's what Rogue Legacy IS:
  • A procedurally generated adventure. Explore new castles with every life.
  • Rogue-lite. Your character dies, but with each passing your lineage grows and becomes stronger.
  • Tons of unique traits that makes each playthrough special. Ever wanted to be dyslexic? Now you can!
  • More than 8 classes to choose from (9)! Each class has unique abilities that change the way you play the game.
  • Over 60 different enemies to test your skills against. Hope you like palette-swaps!
  • Massive, expandable skill tree. Rack in the loot to upgrade your manor and give your successors a cutting edge.
  • Oh yeah, there's a Blacksmith and an Enchantress shop but we forgot to show them in the trailer...
  • Equip your heroes with powerful weaponry and armor. Or gain new abilities like flight, dash, and air jumping.
  • Tons of secrets and easter eggs to uncover... or are there? Yes there are.
  • Got a controller? Play with a controller. Big Picture ready.
  • Clowns.

Rogue Legacy is probably one of the best roguelike games on Steam
That might be an overstatement since I haven't played every game on steam. Regardless, Rogue Legacy is a fantastic game. It has all the right elements to make a great roguelike and includes personal touches that make it a truly unique game.

Positive:
- It's different every time you play. Seriously, you pick a new character every time with a class, a spell, and several traits (irritable bowel syndrome hehehe). Additionally, the map is scrambled every time, forcing you to explore the castle over and over again.
- They also include an option to lock down the castle, giving you the option to continue exploring the same map you had before you died. BUT you are slightly punished by doing so (only receive 60% of gold loot). This is a fantastic option because it gives you an advantage at a price. Let's not make things too easy.
- Teleporters (thank you).
- Simple responsive controls.
- Enemies and traps follow specific patterns - learn them!
- The combination of the previous two points makes this game very fair. It is purely skill based. Did you take damage? It was probably your own fault.
- Enjoyable music.
- Different segments of the castle have different themes and enemies.
- Lots of collectables scattered around the castle.
- Option to level up stats and diversify the genepool.
- Different armour, weapon and rune options that you can customize before entering the castle.
- First play through is a challenge (especially the two last bosses, those took me a long time).
- Great replay value.
- You can have up to 3 different profiles at one time (start a new game without overwriting your previous save).
- Being gay (as a character trait) does absolutely nothing. I love this feature.

Negative:
- Many enemies are just reskins of older enemies (but they have new abilities and patterns).
- Blob boss is very difficult.
- Attacking downwards to open platforms can be difficult.
- You will die a lot in the beginning - try not to get discouraged.
- Over time you will figure out which kind of character you prefer playing, leaving the other ones almost untouched. Personally I almost never played the mage.

Conclusion:
I am fairly certain that you will know whether or not you will like Rogue Legacy based on the trailer. It is exactly as it seems: fun, fast-paced, rewarding and punishing. If the trailer tickles your fancy, I would definitely urge you to get it.

Side-note
Sometimes I played this game with my brother, switching after every death. We basically made a competition to see who could go the furthest or collect the most gold before dying. Naturally this game is fun alone, but it is even better when you play it with someone else.

A pinch of Dark Souls death penalties,a dash of Mega Man platforming, and add a tablespoon of unique character/boss design with a great soundtrack and you've got yourself Rogue Legacy.

Rogue Legacy is about a long lineage of brave knights entering an everchanging cursed castle in order to reclaim the kingdoms honor and of course create your own legacy.

Pros:
+Unique Death System:Now this is the first thing to get out of the way.Replacing your standard,"my dude died guess i'll just respawn and start again", your person is permadead and in his/her place will be your randomly generated heir(1/3 to choose) who will inherit your current upgrades at the manor hence the name "Rogue Legacy".
+Gameplay:Hack and slash swordplay with randomly generated magical abilities and spells unique to every class and heir meaning every single new life you play will feel unique.
+Artwork:2-D sprites are all well done as all characters can easily be identified for gameplay purposes while being pleasing to the eye.
+Soundtrack:Quite good infact as the music helps the atmosphere for each individual part of the castle as well as pump you up for the big boss fights.
+Story: Cryptic and mysterious most of the time you'll learn more about the events that transpired in the castle through journal entries you can find from another adventurer(hint:it has a big payoff).
Cons:
-Difficulty:Very difficult and unforgiving to new players. Not only can movement be difficult but the starting lives and equipment are equivalent to fighting a dozen junkyard dogs armed with a kebab. Also , don't get too attached to your heir as life doesn't automatically regenerate and can only be healed through certain upgrades and finding health packs ingame.

If you're looking for a difficult,2-D Dark Souls style of game where there is a lot of difficulty but a very feel good payoff then this is definitely worth a purchase.(8/10) However, don't fret brave knight for if you ever feel like giving up on your journey just remember when you beat the final boss and listen to this it'll all feel worth it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZ73soQz6rs

Amazing game. Very addicting gameplay mechanics that arent terribly difficult to learn but take some time and skill to use efficiently. The different classes, weapon types, runes, abilities and whatnot all allow for interesting play variety and keeps you wanting to push forward. I've beaten the game a few times now and still pick it back up again from time to time.

Listen up bud, this game's an odd taste adventure and may be an aquired taste.
But if you continue at it, you're in for a splendid meal. With elements of platforming, spices of castlevania and a unique ingredient that puts a spin on Permadeath.
You see, when your character's finished up, you get a choice of three random meals to put on the grill. Not all of them will be to your liking, granted, but it can be used as an excuse to try something new.
When you're done choosing your meal, you can improve your stats at the manor to improve your chances of finishing a meal.
The story here is told through notes, about an adventurer who has went through the same castle as you are.
Don't skip them unless you are going for a record.
A small warning here, this chef is not really used to making platforming meals. Don't let it turn you off though.

Procedurally generated genius. This game gets more play-time than any other game in my library. Would buy it over and over due to the addictive re-playability. I found it to have a very hard learning curve but extremely rewarding once you level up and start to understand how all the random elements fit together. You'll be humming the soundtrack in your head for days! Deserves a few awards at least!

When I first decided to look up "Roguelike" games (after realizing that no, in fact, they are not like "Thief"), I decided they weren't for me. A "procedurally generated perma-death labyrinth" just wasn't what I thought I needed in my life.

When it comes to Rogue Legacy, perhaps I was wrong.

Your progression in this game is based on your growing skill, as well as the temporary gold coins that you use to permanently improve your skill tree, equipment, and runes. I did not expect to pour as many hours into this game as I did. I just kept trying, and kept getting better.

This game has tons of variability. From the character classes, spells, and equipment, to traits that can help you or hurt you. (Being gigantic gives you better reach, but makes it hard to dodge spikes; and there are so many more traits than that one!)
This game makes me feel nostalgic for two games: Castlevania, and an amazing old iPhone game called Solomon's Boneyard (fans of Rogue Legacy may want to check that one out.)

If I were to give them some advice on improving this game, I would say the most tedious part is trying to pick out your next character - quickly recognisable symbols or differing text colours may help to expidite this process.

I'm really excited to finally progress past the castle into the more difficult areas :)

Really good rogue-lite. Each playthrough you play as a knight of a family in a randomized castle. Everytime you die the next member of the family can upgrade the castle to improve all future generations with the money you find. Every generation has unique buffs, debuffs, and skills (High damage but maybe "near-sighted" so enemies not in the middle of the screen are blurry)

Also great soundtrack
