Build-Off #4 Results

The judging period has ended and the results are in. Time to announce the winners for the Contraption Maker Build-Off #4! This was yet another amazing group of entries. You guys just keep making it harder for us to narrow down the top 3 entries.

We had a record number of submissions for this Build-Off, hopefully that number just keeps going up! We love seeing what sort of creative things you all can think of. The longer 2 week submission period felt a lot better to us than the old 1 week period, so it looks like we will keep it 2 weeks for future Build-Offs.

Alright, enough talking, here are the winners!

3rd Place: Waldo and Tinker Battle of the Bands!, by Wisakedjak

This is a clever and funny little contraption. It looks pretty simple, but there is actually a pretty cool behind the scenes control system creating the awesome laser light show. Open it up in the Maker Lab to take a look at it more in depth.

2nd Place: Playing Cat and... Dog..., by SouldSol

A classic, well executed battle of cat vs. dog as they travel around the house. Nice twist ending as well :-) There are some awesome things being pulled off in the contraption. After you watch Waldo & Tinker, watch it again and just follow the basketball to see what it does.

1st Place: Romeo & Juliet 2.0, by Hellwood

Hellwood grabs 1st place again! This contraption tells a fun little story of Romeo and Juliet trying to get together. You should watch this contraption a few times to catch all of the awesome little details (Tinker using the swing twice towards the end is impressive). A side note, this contraption has brought up a physics determinism issue, so it may not run correctly every time you hit play. We are looking into a fix, but while we are doing that, be sure to watch the video so you can see what is actually supposed to happen in it.

Congrats to the winners, and to everyone that submitted a contraption. Like I said, this was our most popular Build-Off yet, and we love seeing what you guys come up with. Be sure to check out the Editor's Choice section of the Workshop for more of our favorite entries that just didn't quite get to the top 3.

Contraption Maker is the brilliant sucessor to the nostalgic Incredible Machine series, and I definitely agree with it. Contraption maker not only modernizes what was already an outstanding concept, but expands on it even more. So far with what I've played through the puzzles have been challenging, but fair all the way through. The developers say you'll find those big "aha!" moments instead of relying on pixel perfect placement solutions, and they are absolutely right. This is a puzzle game done exceptionally well, and with the ever present make mode there is so much more you can create. Even if you haven't played the original Incredible Machine games you'll find much enjoyment out of Contraption Maker.

These are just personal suggestions myself, but I believe if Contraption Maker were to add more content in the future, I would highly suggest some things like a wacky voice over guy like in the original installments, as well as include the music from the older games, like Return of the Incredible Machine: Even More Contraptions.

True to its predecessor, Contraption Maker is the modern incarnation of The Incredible Machines franchise. The core gameplay mechanics is faithfully preserved perhaps to a degree I would call that lacking in originality. Nevertheless, with the support of Steam Workshop, thousands of user-made puzzles constantly added give the game tremendous value and replayability. The devs are even kind enough to let it go on 90% off sale almost non-stop and give an extra copy to you once you have bought it. What more can I say? This is truly an unbeatable bargain for hours of fun for nostalgic gamers and families alike.

Long ago, when I was but a wee lad, I played a game called The Incredible Machine as part of my schooling. Hours of my tutelage in the basement computer lab of my school were spent in blissful abandon playing that wonder of a game, comparing my elaborate constructions to my equally-enthralled pubescent minds, We were gods of all creation, and in our experimentation bonds of eternal friendship were erected alongside the craziest, most Goldbergian of useless designs. It was a fire of friendship that flared, roared, and fizzled away as we slowly grew apart.

Now, in my twenties, apart from those pre-pubescent paragons of pointless perfection, the fire has been rekindled. This game is whimsical and childish enough to make you remember those happier childhood days without pandering to you. I experienced some minor technical difficulties (including a persistent drone on the title screen), but nothing to make the game unplayable.

It's a lot of nostalgic fun. Get it when it comes on sale.

Great throwback to an old classic. So far, this is the only early access game that ended up being worth it for me. Must buy if you like this kind of puzzle game.

Pre-Release Review
This game is the remake of The Incredible Machine which had a great influence on my life.
That was the reason I wanted to become an inventor, someone with great intuition and creativity. My success started there. And as a remake of that game, I give this one 10/10 without doubt.

I was interested in this game because of a fondness for The Incredible Machine and when it went on sale for $1.49 for a two pack I couldn't resist.

It's a great puzzle game plain and simple. The easy puzzles are insanely easy but do a good job of introducing the various contraptions in preparations for the medium and hard puzzles. I haven't played for long yet but was able to knock out about 25 easy puzzles and 2 hard ones inside of an hour or two and had to post about the already excellent experience I've had with the game.

It probably won't capture one's interest for huge chunks of time and I can see where a hard puzzle can get frustrating and cause someone to put the game down for a while but all in all its a great title for some casual brain stimulation and at the current sale price it shouldn't be missed.

They hit this one out of the park I anticipated a remake of the incredible machine for the majority of my youth and I'm really very excited to see this come to fruition and with multiplayer no less. I could wax idiotic about this game for hours without a single bad thing to say, stop reading reviews and enjoy this unique puzzle sandbox.

Pre-Release Review
This game is absolutely awesome. So much has been added since the game was first made. Recently 50 extra puzzles were added, as well as new parts for the community to create new puzzles. This is one of the few games that continues to improve by leaps and bounds and the community has great content, too. Not only that, but you get an extra copy of the game with purchase. If you even remotely enjoy puzzle games, especially from a creative standpoint, this is one of the best games on Steam.

This game is simple but fun and can get quite difficult. You start off with a stage with some goal, and some parts to help you make a contraption to reach that goal. Pretty simple stuff but it can get quite involved trying to figure out what exactly to do. The eureka feeling of knowing what to do and getting to the goal is always a great one. Well worth one's time if you enjoy these kinds of puzzle games.

superb. simply superb.

a throwback to the classic The Incredible Machine (tIM) whcih we all used to play on our windows 95 PCs when we were kiddies, and upgardes the game in every possible way.

nice, none-serious art style. soothing music. clean and fluid graphics and animation. and of course THE PUZZLES. there are so many. and they can really put your wits to the test.

with so many different parts, tools and characters to use, the puzzles can get quite complex.

and once you're done. you can download more from steam workshop! so the fun never ends.

its a very fun and soothing puzzle game, to settle your nerves after a bad dota2 match.

its highlt recomnended for puzzle afcianados and a must have for tIM fans.

The spiritual sucessor to The Incredible Machine, with the same quirky humor and sometimes ludecrous solutions, is here in the form of Contraption Maker.

The game revolves around you assembling Rube Goldberg machines to perform otherwise trivial tasks, like activating a can opener, or guiding a mouse back home. This gameplay requires you to think outside the box for a majority of the puzzles, which makes solving them all the more satisfying. Anyone can pick up this game.

The sound design is amazing, from the music to the sound effects. A lot of love was put into keeping the atmosphere as similar to The Incredible Machine as copyright would allow. Everything sounds exactly the way it should.

In my opinion, the game's best feature is the Steam Workshop compatibility. With it, you can share machines you've made with everyone who owns the game, so even if you complete all the built-in levels, you can still enjoy the game.

With all of this said, I love this game (My playtime is deceving). It's fun, and well crafted, taking everything I loved from The Incredible Machine and improving it.

This game gets my Seal of Recomendation. It is a must-have title. If it looks like fun to you, odds are, it will be. Pick it up, even at full price. Not to mention, you get two copies for less than average price. Put your thinking caps on.

Much like the original game, The Incredible Machine, Contraption Maker allows players to construct all sorts of physics-based Rube Goldberg machines with hundreds of different tools and mechanisms at your disposal. The game itself has hundreds of levels to solve, and that's not even counting for workshop-created levels, which adds hours and hours of gameplay. The levels are very diverse, and present a variety of problems to solve, all of which keep the player engaged.
