Contraption Maker leaves Early Access. Hello 1.0!

July 7th, 2014

It's been 10 months, and here we are. Today is the day that we shed the Early Access name and move to our 1.0 Release! During our time in Early Access, we had 6 major Alpha releases, followed by a Beta release that had a number of updates and improvements. The support and feedback from our community has been so great along the way. Every day, we have loved reading your thoughts on the game, and seeing the awesome things that have been uploaded to the Steam Workshop.

Now that the game is in 1.0, you no longer have to worry about parts changing and breaking your wonderful creations. Make and share anything you want, and it will continue to work as we update the game in the future. And there will be many future updates. Just because we are out of Early Access now doesn't mean that work on the game is stopping. We will continue to have regular updates to the game that will add new puzzles, new features, new parts, and improve upon the usability of the game.

This may be the end of Early Access, but it's the beginning of something great that we are so excited about!

1.0 Release Candidate!

July 2nd, 2014

We have been going pedal to the metal for the last month! In addition to some small bug fixing releases, we have put out 8 major updates since Beta. Each release has made the game more stable, more playable, and more awesome. We are now super close to leaving Early Access, and officially turning 1.0!

Instead of adding new features this next week, it's just going to be heavy bug testing and crash fixing. We want this to be an extremely stable build, so we can launch our release version on MONDAY 7/7!

So now the question on everyone's mind, what does 1.0 mean? The most important part about hitting our release version is that we will no longer be changing the size, shape, and behaviors of parts in the games. This means that no longer will your contraptions break and need rebuilt or adjusting when we put out a new version. We also feel that 1.0 is finally a complete game. There are 140 official puzzles to play, 100 parts to play with, online multiplayer, and so many community puzzles and contraptions to play. We feel that if someone buys this game at 1.0, they are getting a full, complete experience that we are proud of.

Does this mean we are done working on the game? Hell no! If anything, it means we are just getting started. We have a big backlog and idea board full of all sorts of sweet parts to add to the game. However, we don't want to hold people back from playing the game now just because it's "Early Access." Like I said, we feel that the game is a complete experience right now. We will continue to add new parts, puzzles, and features through regular updates like we have throughout the Early Access process.

“It is a from-the-ground-up modernization, with enough familiar elements to instantly excite old fans of The Incredible Machine and enough modern touches to fuel the imaginations of gamers who have never touched the original.”

The puzzles seem a bit simple so far. As a player of the incredible machine, however, it's still well worth the full price of $15. BUY IT AND PLAY IT NOW!

Steam workshop support means that even after the game is complete/released, the community can continue to create puzzles.

I only hope they add some more parts for us. I don't usually say this, but even a series of cheap (read: $1) DLCs would be welcome here, with more parts and puzzles after the game is released. A limited number of parts means a limited amount of replayability.

It's an amazing game, akin to The Incredible Machine. With 140 official puzzles and 100 different parts available, you can create a huge variety of puzzles or just contraptions, should you prefer to do so. Furthermore, the Workshop integration ensures a vast amount of user-generated content is available as well.

Short: If you liked TIM, you'll like this. I requires some creativity, but it's pretty fun to assembly complex machinery.

The 1.0 release of the game is in comparison to the Early Access version very stable and has seen a lot of thorough testing which means you're getting a very mature title now. They've done a great job polishing the UI and the parts' graphics in the recent months.

Early Access Review
I'm writing this review during Early Access so this could change as development goes on:

Highly addictive game play for the Rube Goldberg enthusiast.

I started out on medium and I clicked through most of the suggestions/tool tips. The game is not intuitive. So you will want to start off on easy and learn your way to medium.

You will discover there is more than one solutions to each task. The best part is you can save a compressed version of "your" solution right from the game. It will save it to your hard drive for later access or if you would like to share it with friends later. Can do and did. Also, you can check out the "developers" solution to compare after you have completed a puzzle.

The graphics are kind of...elementary...but the game play more than makes up for it.
