Awesome, Stable, the PRO choice for music making. I load well over 100+ plugins from Kontact Ult' and it still functions with 99.99% stability in 64 bit mode. It takes time to learn and master, you really need to watch all the video tutorials. But once you have, there really is no limit to what you can do in Sonar.
It isn't the best looking DAW GUI, or the most user friendly. But it is as stable as a rock and if you want to make commercial music for games-films-tv-internet use, the word 'stable' is VERY important!
If you are going to buy, DO watch for sales (on Steam or cakewalk site) and watch for offers on Studio version and Zeta+2 as well

10/10 X3 is the benchmark for all DAWS.

I used nuendo and pro-tools (m-powered) in the past. Started playing with cakewalk with music creator touch 6 here on steam. I really liked their interface and it made a lot of sense to me. I upgraded to Sonar basic and then Studio and still loving it completely. The package for drums/strings is decent, beat loops are easy to create but i find the drum line creation to be a bit painful. The automatic recording of multiple takes that can then be spliced on demand is simply amazing for making better guitar tracks. I loved melodyne (demo version for single note is included in sonar studio) so much for fixing vocal lines or updating length/starting position of notes that i upgraded to the full version that works with polyphony.

This is the best music editing package i've worked with for the price. Biggest downside for me at the beginning was the lack of mp3 exporting without paying a plugin but the cakewalk engineers have provided a registry entry to use Lame encoder instead for free and it works perfectly well.

Highly Recommended. I'm a Vocaloid artist, and this program is just perfect for any genre of Vocaloid music. The interface is easy, simple and fun to customize. It's extremely useful with two monitors, as you can hold the actual program itself on the left and the console on the right. I recommend also purchasing the Sonitus FX Suite, I use those effects the most. It brings out the best graphic EQ I have ever used. This program is suitable from anything to classical, industrial and even metal! My first EP, Interloop, was mixed entirely out of Sonar, and the drums are 100% composed in Sonar. The easy studio busing makes it simple to give your computer a break with all the processing.

A big recommend for Vocaloid artists, or just any artist in general!

If you're like me and used to working in a digital audio timeline like Sony's Acid or Magix Music Maker or a step sequencer or piano roll, Sonar and Music Touch Creator will take a little bit of getting used to. Sonar has all of those as well but getting around and learning the interface is a bit more involved. For recording it is very pro and set up for mult track recording, its definite strong point.

Multiple lanes per track and easy punching in and out are among the program's very strong points. Also, doing live takes is a dream with this program so doing vocals and other analog instruments is a dream, though I don't often do so myself. The interface makes that part very easy and once you've set your preferences for a count-in and metronome, doing multiple tracks is no sweat.

The sound engine itself is great though you'll definitely need a bit of horsepower and patience and if you can afford it, multiple sound cards as well as ASIO tends to prefer to have the sound hardware all to itself. ASIO is another alternate driver layer much like DirectX designed for direct access to the sound hardware by applications. Without multiple sound cards, you may have to play around disabling a few programs on your system to find ones that use or reserve the sound card driver and interfere with ASIO.

The Cakewalk Sound Center is an amazing soft synth and has perhaps some of the best Acoustic Guitar, Rhodes and Wurlitzer electric pianos around and that comes from someone who used to play with the real electric pianos.

All in all an amazing value if you can get it on sale.

If not, still well worth the value when you add in the effects VSTs and the facilities and interface for doing your mix.

It's been a while since I've used any sort of digital audio workstation, as a matter of fact the last ones I used were a Korg M1 and Roland D-20 which are both hardware keyboards from the early 1990s during the renaissance of MIDI.

Since that time I've occasionally worked with software workstations like Realtime (Mac), Cakewalk (PC), Magix Music Maker and Sony Acid (made by the same team that brought you Sound Forge by the way).

I've been using Cakewalk products since 1999, when it was their Pro Audio line. I used it exclusively until just about two years ago when I decided to try Reaper 4 on a whim. Since then, I've also become a certified Pro Tools user, having junior engineer experience here in Kiev. I've recorded an entire E.P. with Pro Tools 10HD and dozens of songs with Reaper 4 at home... yet Cakewalk still is the DAW that I am the most fond of and I ws elated when I saw that I could buy it on Steam.

A DAW is a DAW and they all pretty much do the same thing. It really comes down to preference and what you want from your DAW. Cakewalk is versatile and stable. The interface is easier to get used to, and it can be setup however you wish and can really save extra clicks. Don't let people fool you into think that you can't make music without Pro Tools. Sonar X3 is a very capable and powerful DAW (with an excellent selection of plugins that come with it) that can get you the results you're looking for.

Put in the time, learn the software, and you'll quickly realize that you have an extremely powerful DAW at your hands. Just for those out there, I have an AMD FX-6350 at stock speeds and 8GB of RAM. It loads fast, doesn't crash, and is stable as a rock.

This program is okay but it suffrs from excessive complexity where there doesn't need to be any.

For example standard instruments sound slightly better than 1990's era video game music, however if you use Virtual Sound Templates you can get what largely sounds like music played by real instruments. However doing so is uncessarily complicated. Rather than clicking on or selection the track for a partcular insturment and then going clicking through a list of VST instruments you have to go through a long and ardueous process of linking the midi track to a software synth part by part and then eventually after a long and epic journey tying that to the actual VST instrument.

Imagine if every time you went to play your guitar or piano it automaticaly disassembled as you touched it and you were required to rebuild it , rewire it, and re-tune it every single time you needed to make a minor change on your sheet music.

While these same complexities allow greater control it was really a no brainer that it's not appropriate or necessary to throw that kind of curve ball at a user when the process should be as simple as directly choosing a named instrument under a menu indicating that instrument will be of the VST variety. However overly complex interfaces at unecessary times is something Cakewalk seems fond of.

In addition while VST instruments can be purchased through steam they can only be downloaded once. In their wisdom they have only associated them wit another piece of software they have available. A first time purchase will download the VSTs to a shared location and Sonar X3 will be able to read and use them but because they are directly associated with another peice of software and not Sonar X3, they will never download ever again as they do not show up in Sonar X3's DLC list. Currently the only way to get them again is to purchase the software the are directly associated with and redownload them via the DLC menu for THAT software.

The software does what it says and in spite of Cakewalk seemingly going out of their way to make tings more complicated than they need to be once you get past the steep and unecessary learning curve you can accomplish some amazing things. You could also peel your finger nails off. The experience will be similar.

There is a lot of good tutorials around and the software has a good price, thou I recomend sales if you want to get it even cheeper :) I love electronic music so I use this to make stuff i enjoy to listen (i know i have strange taste in music), it took me few hours to make some ok-ish songs with samples i got from the program. I really enjoy using this program and will continue to learn and use it in the future. Some of my fast works are

I'm a musician who's been doing his own mixing and recording on a home studio for about 5 years now. I've gone through several DAW's and I've found that my favourites are Logic and Pro Tools. I had used SONAR about 10 years ago and found it interesting and pretty innovative then, but I had access to Logic since 2007, so I've been using that. However, I have found that working with this iteration of SONAR to be incredibly easy and very quick to transition from Logic.

It works seamlessly with my current hardware and software, it has excellent built-in tools and the inclusion of Melodyne in the Studio level has made for some excellent alternatives to redoing a take that may have great emotion but might have been recorded a tiny bit flat and losing that emotion. I've finally found an affordable alternative to Pro-Tools on my PC that allows me to mix, master and record pro-level recordings with the same ease I've found in using my other preferred DAW's.

There was a minor hiccup when I first purhased this software, as I did not get my Melodyne key, however the crew quickly fixed my problem and also sealed my love for this new product. If you're looking for a mid-range powerhouse DAW, hop on the studio version, it'll allow you to churn out some pro-level recordings (provided you have the skill-set to produce such an end-product) while staying in an incredibly affordable budget. The included plugins will certainly do you justice, but it integrates well with Guitar Rig and Toontrack EZ Mix 2 (which both provide some excellent preset mixing options).

It takes a while to get used to using Sonar X3, but there are many nifty features that will speed up your workflow once you know how to use them.

Good tips from the devs, good deals monthly, helpful documentation and support.

The new VST scanning system is Outstanding, You dont even need to relocate VST pathfolder it automatically finds them. Skylight interface is approachable. Reviewers says the non steam version installation process slightly long-winded. So, I'm glad I got it on Steam; Excellent workflow overall.

As much as I've heard that ProTools is the standard, from my experience Cakewalk's software is pretty standard when it comes to video game development and MIDI. I've been using Cakewalk's products since 1997 and I still use them to this day. My only frustration is the overhead with audio processing as of late and the UI changes. Overall, I'd say this software is excellent. One huge improvement that could made is fuller featured notation such as adding accents that affect MIDI output.

I will say, at first this software (being inexperienced at this "field") was intimidated by the sheer size of this program and all of the posabilities this software holds that seem a million clicks away. If you do buy this software, be sure to be persistant with your effort, and only go with the songs that replay in your head all day-- so when you hear your song being played on the radio, you can smile and remember that was completely origonal (hopefully).

I got Sonar X3 Studio and it's a great DAW for editing audio tracks and recording with professional quality.
I also have an old 1010 LT with some analog preamp and the software record pretty well
The audio snap and melodyne plugins are essencial, I got some VST from waves and slate digital, and they run pretty good with the Sonar, that's the best software I used to record in pc, actually I found it better than pro tools to run in windows. I recomend you to buy it if you need a professional DAW, but if you don't need to snap audio and tune vocals, the standard Sonar X3 will do the job.
