This is what Adventure Club uses to make their music.
Get a synthesizer plugin like Z3TA+ 2 and Sonar X3 and you're set to make some EDM.
Melodyne works wonders.
The Cakewalk (devs of this software) blog offers some really neat tips and guides for unique sounds; this is updated very often, complete with uploaded demos to their soundcloud. However, many of these tips include other software from Cakewalk.
Sonar X3 Producer is PERFECT for non-EDM mixing/remixing/edits.
Deciding on which version to buy?
Base: Direct upgrade from Music Creator 6 Touch (on steam by same devs). These are the essentials for a hobbyist producer.
Studio: I personally did a straight upgrade from the base version to the producer version, but studio seems like the budget version of producer. Notably includes Z3TA+, a synthesizer, and Melodyne Essential.
Producer: Included virtual instruments are very professional sounding. I have not tested any of Producer's fx yet, so perhaps someone would leave a helpful comment on what to expect.
Other thoughts: I recommend investing in a good pair of headphones and a sound card. A midi keyboard is also very helpful.
