About the Game

Up the Junction brings you some of the diverse variations of the standard 0-6-0 diesel electric shunter. This incredibly long-lived locomotive type began life as a pre-World War 2 design by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS), and can still be found working in yards all around Britain today. This add-on includes the Class 09, Class 11, Class 12 and Class 13 locomotives.

The Class 09 was very similar to the Class 08, but was fitted with different gearing to give a higher top speed of 27mph (44kph). Originally the entire production run of 25 Class 09s operated only in the Southern Region, but ended up working as far afield as Cornwall and Yorkshire following the privatization of the network in 1996.

The Class 11 was initially built for the War Department, who took the first 14 locomotives in 1944 for War Department duties. However, it proved so successful that 120 examples were built in the following years up to 1952, with some continuing to operate overseas, including Australia and the Netherlands, following British Rail’s retirement of the class in 1971.

The Class 12 was built at the British Rail Ashford works for use in London’s Norwood Junction and Hither Green marshalling yards, which is where all 26 examples began their working lives. Built from 1949, the Class 12 had gearing for a 27mph (44kph) top speed and was fitted with air brakes, and saw service at the Ashford, Brighton and Eastleigh yards before retirement.

The Class 13 was the rarest of the bunch, with only three examples being specially built in 1965 for use at Tinsley Marshalling Yard. An unusual locomotive, the Class 13 looked like exactly what it was – two Class 08s permanently coupled together as ‘master’ and ‘slave’, with one cab removed and ballast added. This may seem like a rather complex solution to the simple requirement for a more powerful shunting locomotive, but the Class 13 was designed specifically to articulate to negotiate the Tinsley yard shunting hump, upon which a longer rigid-framed locomotive would have become grounded.

Haul the Duff

• During your duties in Hedborough Wood Yard, a class 47 train has recently failed on arrival. Split the locomotive from its stock, and haul the failed Type 4 from Wood Yard to the Sheds.

Empty Reading

• Various wagons stored in Reading Yard are to be moved out today due to track work and de-weeding. Your job is to shunt the wagons to form the train before it heads out with a mainline diesel.

Shunting Puzzle

• During a very cold winter at Templecombe you are required to assemble two coal trains, one a loaded rake, and another empty. Shunt these any way you want, but when you have finished, the rakes should be complete in their marked sidings. Good luck.

Foggy Valley - Career System scenario

• The weather has just rolled in and it is reducing visibility. Finish your duties on time or delay other trains out on the mainline from Bath. You are also being assessed on this shift, so comply with all requests to wait.

Bustling Thrislington - Career System scenario

• The Railway proves that industry is reliant on services from the mines to the power stations. Thrislington is always busy, with trains coming in and out. Your job is to shunt the coal wagons, during the mid-1970s. Good luck.

Pick ‘n Mix - Career System scenario

• Everyday, 100s of wagons are moved through York Sidings in order to be sorted and tripped on to other yards and sites. Your task today is to use your class 08 shunter to form a train to Newcastle, albeit via Doncaster.
