About the Game

The London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) Class V2 locomotive was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley for mixed traffic work. The Class V2s were the most significant class of 2-6-2 tender locomotives used in Britain. Production began in 14 batches between 1936 and 1944, with construction occurring throughout WW2 for a total of 184 locomotives. After the war and into British Railways era, the V2s continued their admirable performance on the East Coast Main Line, the Waverley Route between Carlisle and Edinburgh and on the ex-Great Central main line between Marylebone and Sheffield.

The first of the Doncaster built V2s, numbered 4771 and emerging in 1936, was promptly named 'Green Arrow', after the express freight service for which the locomotives had been built. 4771 Green Arrow still remains in preservation today, forming part of the National Collection.

The Green Arrow

• To celebrate a return to operation, 4771 'Green Arrow' is doing a tour of the UK. You’ve been invited to take to the foot plate on this inbound trip to Paddington.

York Express

• Drive the V2 with 10 coaches from Darlington to York where your shift will end. All stops for this scenario are timetabled. You must make passenger stops at Northallerton 13:32, Thirsk 13:44 and York 14:12.

The Snapper

• Starting at Newcastle, perform timetabled passenger stops to Darlington. However, an important freight train is leaving Ferryhill at 07:30 so ensure you pass Ferryhill before then or you will lose your priority and be forced behind this slow, but important train. Your timetable for station stops is as follows: Chester Le Street 07:08, Durham 07:17 and Darlington 07:42.

Dock Duties

• To start you must finish up some freight work before getting the V2 into position near Hedborough Station for evening passenger duties.

Overhaul

• V2 60948, which is based in York, is due for a general overhaul at Darlington Works, which will turn out to be its last. As you are passing, a Thirsk wagon pick up has been incorporated into your work order.

Funeral March

• V2 No 60865 is being withdrawn today, but even so there is work to be done. Bring some other worn steam locomotives to Darlington where 60865 will then be taken for cutting up.
