About This Game

Enjoy three fantastic real-world routes including Sherman Hill (USA), Riviera Line: Exeter to Kingswear (UK) and West Rhine: Cologne to Koblenz (Germany). Train Simulator 2016 is the biggest package of exclusive content we have ever delivered in a Train Simulator!

EXCLUSIVE Steam Edition includes the additional route, Norfolk Southern Coal District route.

Feel the pressure of steam as you travel back to the time of Green and Gold, from the powerful Kings to the romantic Castles, the heavy working Halls, the goods-carrying Granges and the famous Pannier Tanks across the Riviera Line set in the nostalgic 1950s. Relive the time when steam reigned on all services from local freight to coastline express, whether you perform perfectly alone or need some assistance to get to your destination. The 40 Mile Riviera Line in the 1950s comes with GWR Pannier Tank, Castle, Hall, King and Grange Class all with Driver Assist incorporated, Mk1, Collett and Centenary coaches and freight wagons. Keep an eye on those signals, they can be easy to lose in the cold western fog.

Experience the power of the fuel-hungry Big Blows across the challenging Sherman Hill as you haul hundreds upon hundreds of tons, putting that 8500 horsepower turbine through its paces, or opt for some conventional traction in the form of ES44ACs, drive in more comfortable conditions in the wide cab of the SD70M, or maybe in the classic SD40-2s. The 60 Mile Sherman Hill route comes with UP Gas Turbine, ES44AC, SD70, SD40 and SW10 locomotives and freight wagons. Watch out though, winter can be brutal even for the most powerful of locos.

Control the Genesis of modern Electro-motive traction as you haul heavy freight across the stunning West Rhine Railway in the DB BR 155 ‘Electric Container’, take passengers on their scenic commute with the DB BR 146 or shunt together a train to be taken far away with the DB BR 294. The 60 Mile West Rhine Railway from Cologne to Koblenz comes with DB BR 155, 146.0, 146.2, 101 and 294, with regional and InterCity coaches and a variety of freight wagons. Be mindful of the weather, heavy rain can take even the best drivers by surprise.

Struggle through the beautifully scenic Mon Line as you haul mile long coal trains through the winding curves and streets of Pennsylvania. Collect coal as you drive your ES44AC slowly under the loading facilities and prepare for the run to the other end of the line. While being relatively level, the sharp river-side turns and the slow speeds as you cut right through a town will not be mastered easily. The 50 Mile Norfolk Southern Coal District route comes with Norfolk Southern ES44AC and Dash 9 (AI Only) locomotives with NS coal hoppers. (Only available with Steam Edition)

Capture the perfect scenes in the all new Railfan mode
Enjoy the power and finesse of the railway away from the drivers cab with railfan mode, watch from the platform, track side or stand on a bridge and take in the excitement without worrying about the journey, just make sure you’re ready to take some shots, you never know what you might see out on the tracks!

Learn to drive different trains at the TS Academy and qualify as a train driver
New to driving trains? Not to worry! With the newly updated TS Academy you can learn all that you need to beat the extreme, from basic passenger operations to freight terminals that require pin-point accuracy or nailing those complex and unique signalling systems. TS academy is the best way to learn or remember how to control every type of train

Have you mastered driving diesel and electric locos, but struggled to control steam? Found it too complicated to drive or understand? Now you can master these delicate engines with our all new driving assist! Driver assist will provide you with real time information based on the locomotives performance and handling, it will guide you through driving a steam loco by highlighting the controls in cab and telling you how to move them to get the best out of the engine. Driver Assist is featured on all the steam locomotives included with the Riviera Line in the Fifties route and can be turned on and off at will.

I started off my journey in London and headed south. While outside Croydon, I sat at the signals for what seemed an eternity, which made me late. The game then crashed slightly after I was given the light to proceed, cancelling the journey altogether. My frustration made me go on strike for a week.

10/10 most realistic simulator ever.

The fundamental problems that this game/sim has had for years still haven't been solved. Performance is absolutely terrible even on absolutely high end systems, while the game doesn't look that great. (The screenshots are not representative! Looks a lot worse in practice.)

Not been playing long, also i am new to the train simulator franchise... first impressions are okay, graphics seem to be alright, some textures seem to be buggy but nothing major, i always have to verify game cache prior to playing the game not sure why... but i does make the game stable. random crashes do occur while loading the game senario.

although i am new to this simulator the tutorials are helpful in a way but most of them can be consolidated into one rather than having five tutorials with a duration of 5 mins each time and having to load each one can be really frustrating and boring.

another frustrating part to this game is the DLC's i have never in my lifetime of playing games seen so many DLC's for one game, and not cheap price either, alot of them consist of different routes and trains, but why not sell it as a package deal not independant DLC's, i will NOT be purchasing any DLC's unless they become free for this game i do not agree with this at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the map builder is interesting, i am currently making my own routes but at the same time trying to understand how the builder works, thank god for youtube.

i would recommend this game but seeing as this game has so many dlc's it is impoosible to enjoy the game also duration time for each senario is really short i am surprised they havent provided long journey's e.g london to edinbourgh, it looks like any addon you subscribe to needs DLC's to play also.. kind of sucks.

I've always had a love for trains--especially the old steam locomotives, so this game had always been at the back of my mind. After seeing Squirrel's and Matt Peddlesden's videos, I finally decided to buy the game. I purchased the UK packages as it was on sale and surprisingly found the learning curve to be not as steep as I had feared. The Academy allows you to quickly pick up on the basics and Quick Drive and Standard game modes allow you to learn the ins and outs of your engine and the route before putting your skills to the test in career mode. I use a mouse and keyboard for controls and haven't run into any problems worth noting.

Now, to the issue that seems to rouse the most discontent amongst reviewers: the cost of DLCs. Personally, I don't have a problem with Dovetail charging for the DLCs. True, if you purchase all of them at once, you're going to shell out quite a bit of money. But, no one says that you have to buy ALL the DLC's at once or even any. My philosophy is that I'll pick up an interesting route and/or loco when it's on sale and I have the funds available. I win--I get to play with a new route and or choo choo train; Dovetail wins because it makes a sale; and the developers win because that money gets plowed back into salaries and other projects--such as more routes and choo choos. The free market does its thing and everyone wins.

As with any other game, there are problems--the scenery sometimes isn't what I'd like it to be; more classic 19th century engines and routes would be nice; routes in India and Africa--both today and during the Victorian era--would be fantastic. Also, more US routes--but I'm speaking from a biased perspective here,; someone from Poland would like more Polish/East European routes, etc--there's no place like home. Still, this is a good game and it's fun to play and in the end, that's what's most important.

Admittedly, the huge amount of paid dlc put me off at first. And this game really is just about driving trains, performing some tasks and not messing up. I do however like trains, and so far I've enjoyed myself learning to drive them. The dlc is something I choose to see as collecting a model train set. In that sense, comparing it to dlc of an average game where more gives you often a fuller experience, does not work.
If you are considering this game you likely are looking to just experience driving trains, drive through some nice scenery, enjoy controlling something that requires some proper timing. This game offers that properly in my opinion.
Moreso than with other games your purchase will depend on how you regard the pricing scheme. You will likely want some new routes or trains to play with after a while. Do you consider the large offering of paid routes and trains as essentials that should have been (much) cheaper? Then perhaps better stay away. Do you consider this a hobby that will likely require or at least warrent future investments (which you can afford and feel reasonable enough, possibly during sales), then this is indeed a good simulator of what it claims to be in my opinion.

I made a ♥♥♥♥-brained review before, now I'm being serious.
Also rewritten the review, read again then consider changing your rating...

This review is made as an example and may not be considered a review. Comments are much welcome as to point out any errors or to state opinion.

This game would've been great...
I would've said, "This game has potential..." but no. Too cliche, and this game will never get better.
This game can be put as "half-baked" or that it's almost there.

What this game should be like...
SCS's Euro Truck Sim 2. The game has a decent amount of content already. Most of it's DLC is really cheap, and are visual, like paint jobs and acessories. You can find free counterparts of DLC on the workshop including extras like trucks, trailers, visuals (HUD elements, bloom removal, FX, etc.), buildngs, economy, and logos.

For comparison, the Workshop items in this game requires atleast 2 DLC each, and are limited to the cliche scenarios (drive this, look at traffic, then some text to spice it up or potentially give a story, and thats the usual) and if you're lucky, a basic route.

Another one:
There is a franchise called "Trainz" where the content are in MILLIONS and many of them are FREE. While you get none in updates, you can chose to download all you want. How they make money? Charge for the games themselves (like most games do), and provide a paid subscription service to boost DL speeds. They also include third-party paid content as official DLC. Many which you get free in certain version (similar to this game).

Compare this to DTG. There a very few third-party free items, and DTG hasn't released official free content (not including the yearly versions). You might get some free reskins (of DLC trains) and a rocket train (you derail alot).

Conclusion
Many reasons why this game is bad.

1/10 almost there.

While as simulator it's okay(ish), I'd not recommend to buy it because of the DLC and downward compatibility (or lack of it). In the past I've bought a couple of DLC packs, which over the year have become obsolete with new changes, but the developer does not take the effort to update those DLC packs. With that, the obsolete DLC packs ARE NOT downloaded to the current version of the game, so you CAN NOT make them compatible yourself (I can make a couple of disc DLCs I have compatible with the current version of the game). Also, I've noticed that a couple of old and obsolete DLCs have been readded as new DLC to the store without replacing the old obsolete DLC for the players who have bought it.
