The Ship: Remasted Dedicated Servers are live!

Ahoy Shipmates!

With the latest patch we’ve moved Dedicated Servers to the open seas and out of the testing drydock! This will allow for the setup of Dedicated Servers that don't require the The Ship: Remasted to be running. If you are hosting a Dedicated Server you will need to ensure your ports are open so that people can see the server and connect.

Opening your ports

If you wish to run a dedicated server please open the following ports;
  • TCP/UDP 7776-7778
  • TCP/UDP 443

The server.cfg file uses 7777 as the default, if you change this then make sure you open one more and one less than this, e.g. If your default is 6555, open ports 6554-6556.

Anyone is now free to host a Dedicated Server. This can be done two ways:

Downloading and running the server anonymously

You do not need to own The Ship: Remasted or have the steam client running to run a server anonymously. This is perfect if you want to run a Remasted Dedicated Server on some dedicated hardware.

Download the server files from here and unzip them to a folder where you would like to install the game.

Then double click the “Run_DedicatedServer.bat” file and it will automatically download all the files needed to run a Remasted Dedicated Server. Note: every time this batch file is run it will check for updates, so whenever a new patch is out re-run the batch file to keep the server up-to-date.

If you wish to change the server rules to a configuration of your own making, be sure to look at the README.txt file found in the ‘Remasted Dedicated’ folder. This explains how to make your own ‘server.cfg’ and change the batch files to use your configuration instead of the default one.

Downloading and running through steam

The other way to launch a Dedicated Server is to download and run it using Steam. Doing it this way will require you to own The Ship: Remasted and be logged into your Steam account.

Download the server tool from within Steam (Library > Tools > Right Click ‘The Ship: Remasted Dedicated Server > Install).

Game settings can be edited in the various files located in the TSRDS_1 folder (...steamapps\common\The Ship Remasted Dedicated Server\TSRDS_1). If this file is not present, running the Dedicated Server once will automatically create this folder. Opening the server.cfg with a program such as notepad++ will allow you to tweak game settings, such as Server Name, password, Map and Score Limit. The mapcycle text file, in the same folder, can be edited with the list of ships you want the server to cycle through and in what order.

Note: If you are only trying to join a server you may not need to open any ports depending on your setup. Any Dedicated Servers that are running will appear in the Join Server menu in-game under ‘Dedicated’ or ‘All’ tabs if you have the same version number of the game as the server. All servers appear in the Steam Server browser and they indicate which version of the game they are running. If you try to join a server with the wrong version number you will be taken to the main menu of the game.

Other additions

Aside from the Dedicated Servers, the team have been hard at work tweaking existing features and squashing those pesky little (and sometimes big) bugs. We have added new audio updates, such as footsteps (thus removing those silent ninja assassins). New facial animations have also been added, meaning characters will also no longer stare blankly into the depths of your soul!

If you are playing with bots, killing them while they are in a container will no longer cause the container to become unusable.

Loyalty Discount

If you own The Ship: Murder Party you will get 25% off The Ship: Remasted. This offer has been extended until the 30th of June.

Also make sure to follow us on twitter to keep updated! (@BlazingGriffin, @TheShipGame)

Happy Hunting!

“its gameplay and design draw on everything from Poirot to Quake, with even a slightly unhealthy dose of The Sims thrown into the mix - but the game is much more than the sum of its well worn parts”
8 – Videogamer

“Unlike a lot of its hybrid predecessors, this multigenre multiplayer game really is something completely different. While the game draws on identifiable sources such as Quake, The Sims, and Clue, it mashes these elements together with a few new ideas to create an innovative experience that doesn't play like any of its inspirations.”
8.3 – Gamespot

“the game twists around the Clue formula to make it a little more interesting. Instead of having to uncover a killer, The Ship makes you the killer. The main gameplay mechanic revolves around finding your target, called your quarry, and breaking their face as stealthily as possible. To do so there are plenty of lethal odds-and-ends to wield, and even some environmental traps. It's certainly a quirky take on first-person gaming, but it's an entertaining one once you get the hang of it.”

Finding a Server

Ahoy Shipmates!

Unfortunately the in-game server browser is no longer working. However, players can connect to servers via the Steam Client > View > Servers (if you don't see The Ship you may have to restart the client). Feel free to drop by the forums to chat about this and you can find a more detail explanation of the issues in our announcement: http://steamcommunity.com/games/theship/announcements/detail/194000194554609687

About This Game

This package includes a tutorial, The Ship Single Player, which introduces you to some gameplay mechanics and storyline, and The Ship Multiplayer where you can hunt and be hunted by other players.

Please read our State of the Game announcement: http://steamcommunity.com/gid/103582791430084264/announcements/detail/194000194554609687

For PC gamers who enjoy multiplayer games with a bit of intelligence, intrigue and ingenuity, The Ship is a murder mystery alternative to traditional FPS multiplayer games. Each player is given a Quarry to kill - and must evade their own Hunter in the process, all set on board a series of 1920s art deco cruise ships.

The Ship is owned by the mysterious Mr X and as one of many 'lucky' recipients of a free ticket you arrive on board The Ship to find there's a catch to your luxury cruise. You are coerced into a brutal Hunt to indulge Mr. X's fantasies, under threat of death for not only yourself, but also your family. Your only chance to save yourself and your family is to play the Hunt and win.

Combining stealthy multiplayer action and a needs system, The Ship is a truly unique gaming experience.

One time, I had a dream about a guy who bent me over his bed and had his way with me until I could cry no more.

I would rather relive that dream for two years than play The Ship for an hour.

I remember waiting to get this game, it released a day before my birthday 10 years ago (in 5 days is the 10 year anniversary...jeezomg). I cannot extol a game as highly as this one. It is a guilty pleasure, it’s very tense for those actually vying to win the match; nothing comes close to explaining the thrill of tracking and finding your quarry…and murdering them in an unsuspecting manner..
Each round you are given a name of a person you must assassinate using random weapons you find (which have different $ rewards), all while keeping an eye open for a person who is doing the same: hunting you. The maps are deep and intricate, they really put effort and care into this game. There are secret passages to sneak and escape, you can bribe officers to turn a blind eye, and you can steam people to death, explosives, firearms...I mean come on its awesome.
There are also other types of gameplay like Teams and Deathmatch; there’s also a seasonal Christmas version of maps too.
As aforementioned by others, a big beef is the lack of players, but when you get a good server its truly an amazing treat, sometimes you gotta wait for other parts of the world to log on (RUS & AUS I’m talking to you, get more players!). Thank you Outerlight for this game and Steam or whomever is keeping it here running, legit there have been many a time I think about the sad day when they shut this game down due to time, players, costs, etc. and I would be so devastated. Help keep this gem alive, it’s a classic. 10/10 A+++

Turn Clue into a first-person shooter on 1920's era luxury liners, sprinkle in bits of The Sims, and you've got The Ship. Instead of having to uncover a killer, The Ship makes you the killer. To be more specific and familiar to the gaming audience, The Ship is a very polished and creative take on the Assassin's Creed Multiplayer experience (but also keep in mind that this game came before the Assassin's Creed Multiplayer genre was released)....where the main gameplay mechanic revolves around finding your target, called your quarry, and breaking their face as stealthily as possible. To do so, there are plenty of lethal weapons and objects to wield, and even some environmental traps that you will find yourself potentially avoiding. To add flavor, everyone else on each map has a quarry as well. While pursuing your own target, you'll need to stay alert and attempt to spot the passenger readying a knife for your back. The Sims element of the game, quells upon your daily needs to survive (food, drinks, toilet, sleep, etc). The 'character's needs' element makes for a deeper gameplay experience, as your character is vulnerable to attack while you're downing a bag of chips or snoring on a bed. And it is surely funny when your friend murders you on the toilet. The Ship is one of very few games that brings a large amount of enjoyment to my friends and I. Built on Valve's Souce engine, a majority of gamers can experience a $20 title with basically 4 copies to gift away. A little too much? Ask four of your friends for $4 each, and your all set! Overall, The Ship is a very innovative, satisfying and humorous experience that a bunch of 5 friends can't pass up. "Let us set sail!."

1. Played the tutorial and though "Meh, I should be good"

2. I play the Singleplayer Campaign

3. I find a Tommy Gun in the first cupboard I look in

4. I think "Sweet, a Tommy Gun >:D"

5. I find my Quarry sitting in a chair, sleeping

6. I decide to shoot the Quarry with the Tommy Gun I found

7. I wanted the best accuracy so I right click to attempt to aim down the sights of my Tommy Gun

8. I realise that you cannot aim down your sights

9. The gun flies out of my character's hands faster than the bullet would've travelled

10. My gun collides with my Quarry and somehow kills my Quarry

10/10 Would use unrealistic throwing abilities and physics to kill my Quarry again.

This is the Multiplayer portion of The Ship. I said I didn't like the singleplayer, but the multiplayer is a totally different story.

Also another little note, at time of writing, the in-game server browser is broken. You can find games through Steam (Steam Window: View > Servers > Change Filters > set game to The Ship).

The Ship seems to be a lesser known, yet highly underrated game about murdering other people without being spotted. It's a true blue stealth game in that you actually have to kill your quarry without being seen by anyone. If you pull out a weapon in front of a guard, security camera, or are seen holding one for too long by other players, you get arrested and penalized. The game also punishes random deathmatching, so players have less incentive to grief. The game is really tense because everyone is a target. while you're hunting your target, someone else is hunting you, and you have no idea who it is until they start looking shifty, make a move on you, or kill you.

It also combines a little bit of The Sims in that you have to manage your needs: hunger, thirst, toilet, cleanliness, boredom, fatigue, socialization... All the while trying to hunt down your quarry. The game also encourages mixing up your murder weapons by increasing the money you get for a kill with a given weapon the longer it goes without being used. Once a weapon is used, it drops to the bottom of the list and only gives you the minimum payout.

The game is a buttload of fun and deserves more love and attention. This game also comes with a bunch of copies that you can give to friends. I highly recommend it, especially if you can pick it up during a sale.

The Ship: Sims combined Murder/TTT Gamemode. Fukken A++
I spawned in the Deck C, set down in Cafeteria, ate a hamburger, nobody gave a ♥♥♥♥ about a corpse falling down from the Captain's Cabin.
Then, I went into someone's room, took a ♥♥♥♥, and killed it's owner.
I found my Hunter while I was taking a shower, he was stalking me through a glass Door. I killed him with a Polo Stick. His corpse got stuck in the wardrobe and then propelled into a Flowerbed.
After all this, I was Jailed for 1 Minute because I was wielding a Dangerous Weapon ( Polo Stick ).
I bribed a Guard with 50$ so he won't pay attention to my crimes.
I ♥♥♥♥ed up the whole Cafeteria, bought an energy drink and went into Engine room where nobody also gave a ♥♥♥♥ about Scottish 1-eyed Afroamerican ( I spawned like that ) with Camasutra book.
This game is ♥♥♥♥ing 10/10. Buy it now.
