About This Game

In Game Dev Tycoon you replay the history of the gaming industry by starting your own video game development company in the 80s. Create best selling games. Research new technologies and invent new game types. Become the leader of the market and gain worldwide fans.

A journey through gaming history

Start in the 80s
Start your adventure in a small garage office in the 80s. Enjoy the hand-crafted level design while you develop your first simple games. Gain experience, unlock new options and create your first game engine.

Create games your way
In Game Dev Tycoon the decisions you make during development really matter. Decide which areas you want to focus on. Does your game need more gameplay or should you focus more on quests? These decisions will have a major impact on the success of your game.

Grow your company
Once you have successfully released a few games you can move into your own office and forge a world-class development team. Hire staff, train them and unlock new options.

Make larger more complex games
With experience and a good team, you can release larger, more complex games. Larger games bring new challenges and you will have to manage your team well to deliver hit games.

Interesting game, takes a lot of knowledge about game history and experience of different types of games to play well (in the first game).

Get a bit boring and repetitive after a while, Also I didn't feel that I have real control over the development of games. Even nice new combo does not necessarily gives nice result.

And in the end, I have to develop too many good games to survive.

Game Dev Tycoon is excellent! When I was younger in middle school, I played a game called Hot Dog Stand. In which you would create a hot dog stand, set prices, find vendors, create new items, etc. etc. all in the name of running your own growing and ever expanding empire.

This game brings back all those feelings I enjoyed as a kid. There is plenty to do in this game to keep you entertained. You can create new Game Engines, create Sequels to hit games, research all sorts of game related topics which will make your created games even more of a hit, purchase larger offices with more employees and R&D facilities as your business grows.

It isn't completely easy though. You have to learn what consoles and games and genres work well together, and build your audience base through good games, proper marketing, and competing with other game development companies.

The mod support for this game is fantastic! There is so much to download and expand your experience. Create back stories, and memorable platforms that you have had the luck to play on in your own real life.

The only issue I have is that you cannot delete save files. Seems like a pretty basic oversight, currently you have to turn of Steam cloud and delete local app data files if you want to remove all your save files.

Also this game ran perfectly on my Microsoft Surface 3 NON PRO aswell as my Custom PC.

This game is very fun and addicting. The only thing i dont like about it is that the weeks go by quickly in the game so the game ended really early before i got to do very much. But its still a fun game and im still putting hours into the game. Much recommended.

Wonderful little game, originally I felt it was very simplistic, but the more I play the more depth appears in the game. I find myself hooked into this game playing for a few hours when I meant to just play for 15 minutes.

This game is pretty fun, there is a lot of variety in the games you make every playthrough. Yes it is sad to see a company you built so high up, fall to the ground, or seeing a review on a game you made that makes no sense but overall its a pretty fun game to play when you are bored or even when you are feeling a little casual. You may get tired of playing games, so make them instead.

Simple game, done right.

There is seriously a lot of fun to be had with this game, me and my sister played it for 5 hours today. There are several micromanagement systems in play, but actually it is very minimal. But the small number of systems is made up for by the functionality of all these systems. Everything works like it should. The interface is colourful and interesting with some very satisfying noises thrown in. Music is average.

It takes you through a (reduced) history of gaming, though the names have been changed for legal reasons, you still know what everything is. It's cool to see consoles come and go, some for a long time, some for not so long, some corner the market and some flop.

The gameplay is fun and keeps you entertained, there are many upgrades available, which as we all know by now has an addictive quality, you want to just keep upgrading!

The best thing though is how satisfied you feel when you make a good game, sell a lot of copies and your fans love you, it really does feel extremely satsifying, that is what keeps you playing.

Will definitely be adding more hours to this game in the future, seriously good job.

After first play through I went back just to do this...

  • Reach major title unlock
  • Make Call of Duty
  • Games 1-6 8.5 and higher
  • MW2=10/10
  • Hit CoD9
  • Gets 2/10
  • Makes 20 more identical to #9
  • Goes out of Business
  • Game over
10/10 would make CoD franchise fail again

Pretty simple game, but loses its replayability after a while.

It is fun to play through the game the first time, but after you have done it a couple of times there isn't really anything worth sticking around for as there isn't much of a difference between each of the games you make. It all starts to blend into a generic switch management game without much draw to replay.

Still a good game worth checking out.

Absolutely amazing game but disappointing at the same time.

Pros
- "Pick up 'n play" - After a year of not playing, you'll still remember the controls and mechanics.
- Very simple but yet effective UI.
- You make this game as difficult as you want - do you stick with small and medium games and make decent income, or do you focus on AAA MMOs and dominate the market with your financial power?
- There's actually a 'goal' to this game - to achieve as high of a score as possible before 36(?) in-game years.
- The game has a amazing casual feel and good gameflow, time spent playing will slip through your fingers like sand.
- You're not limited to just games and you will work your way up as you go along - you start off in a basement/garage building small text games and before you know it you're the CEO of a AAA company building your own engines and consoles.

Cons
- After moving in to your last office, having unlocked all the R&D stuff and after having built 1 or 2 consoles, the game gets boring really quickly. (Starting a new game might resolve this bug)
- To me personally, the game feels lacking, don't get me wrong, it is amazing as it is, but I feel like it could have been so much more. What would be nice is maybe building your own OS, creating your own software and maybe have the game expand more on the consoles you get to make. I understand that this is a game dev tycoon but I see this game more as an amazing base for a computer industry tycoon and I really do hope that the devs do something and try to expand on this.
- The Steam Workshop feels lacking, while there is a Steam Workshop, do not expect too much from it. Unless you want a more accurate translation to Chinese or Russian it might not be for you.

TL;DR
This is an amazing game and absolute worth however much money you happen to spend on it and will grant you many hours of enjoyable playtime and yet feels lacking in some areas. This is a game I would most definitely recommend

It's fun and a great time-waster, as long as you don't look at the soulless eyes of your workers. Always open, always watching. Getting a vacation every four years.

Now this game is great, I mean I've never been good at strategic games but this one I think really fits my skill level, I like the theme of the game and love how it's structured, but less about how good it is and time to start actually critiquing it, first of all the in game reviews, some times I feel as if they sound kinda....flat?, for example I made a parody of star craft called "scar traft" and one of the reviews was "fun at stages" which made the in game reviews sound flat and lifeless, because there was no way for me to make the game online or not, then there's my next biggest issue, variety, during the start of the game I feel as if the amount of genre's you're given aren't very....varied, I feel as if you should have at least 10 different genre's from the start, and lastly my final issue with it is also with the start of the game, sequels, during my first play through of the game I wanted to make a sequel to the first game I made, so I made it, but then later on in the game I find out that the way I made my sequel ((obliviously making it an independant title)) wasn't the way I was supposed to do it, and the way I was supposed to do it was to advance more into the game, which was just......it made feel stupid to be entirely honest, this is my review of game dev tycoon.

Game Dev Tycoon is exactly what you expect: a videogame developer tycoon. You are supposedly warped back in time to 1985 to a reference-filled (hint: flux capacitor) garage, where you begin your endeavour into the gaming history books. Like any developer who travels in time to 1985, you are absolute ♥♥♥♥ at programming because the technology is so different. You have a computer that's literally worse than a modern graphing calculator, yet you decide to make games. If you are successful, you can grow your garage into an actual company, with actual people, and actual results. You have to strategically market your games for specific audiences (you know, like "T for Teen" or "E for Everyone") and try to match genres to different gaming platforms to different audiences.

For example, kids. In the real world, devices like the Nintendo DS (which reminds me, tell you later) or the great old Gameboy are very popular. Add a role-playing/ adventure game like the Legend of Zelda, and you're all set. Target marketing at young people, and kaboom: ez skins, ez life. Although "skins" probably means nothing to the world of the 1980s and 90s.

So, now, about the NDS. The developers, in an effort to give you a good laugh, and avoid copyright infringement, have sort of parodied every console on the market. If I'm correct, the Nintendo GameCube's counterpart is the GameSphere. It's actually kinda freaking amazing.

I'll give GDT a solid 8, maybe an 8.5 because of the extensive workshop mod support.

TL;DR: Time travel to 1985, make games, ♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥♥es, get money. 8.5/10

I just finished this after playing around for 39 hours. This game is worth every penny I paid for it. There are many things you can try and the game mechanics seem quite logical. The game doesn't really explain that much why your games aren't succeeding, but after a while you can most likely figure thing out.

I had a lot of fun while playing Game Dev Tycoon. So, if you are intrigued by game industry, buy this game. Now.
