About This Game

In Game Dev Tycoon you replay the history of the gaming industry by starting your own video game development company in the 80s. Create best selling games. Research new technologies and invent new game types. Become the leader of the market and gain worldwide fans.

A journey through gaming history

Start in the 80s
Start your adventure in a small garage office in the 80s. Enjoy the hand-crafted level design while you develop your first simple games. Gain experience, unlock new options and create your first game engine.

Create games your way
In Game Dev Tycoon the decisions you make during development really matter. Decide which areas you want to focus on. Does your game need more gameplay or should you focus more on quests? These decisions will have a major impact on the success of your game.

Grow your company
Once you have successfully released a few games you can move into your own office and forge a world-class development team. Hire staff, train them and unlock new options.

Make larger more complex games
With experience and a good team, you can release larger, more complex games. Larger games bring new challenges and you will have to manage your team well to deliver hit games.

So Game Dev Tycoon was released on December 10th, 2012 on Greenheart's website as a standalone game. I played this game after 2 months of it's released, it was amazing. I remember Christmas being over and I had cash to spend, I decided to buy Game Dev Tycoon for it's unique idea. I realized that I was taking a risk since this wasn't on Steam, wasn't really on anything besides their website. I'm so glad I did buy this game because I simply love 'creating' games. I mean you can make a company from scratch, start in a garage and climb all the way to the top with your money over 1B+. I played this game at least 100 hours, yeah I know that it isn't showing on my steam record, remember I got this game when it came out. I am a game developer, so when I came across this game I was like "Yeah this is an instant buy". I kinda use this as a guide for not creating a stupid game, I think of a game idea, I give it a name and I create it in Game Dev Tycoon, if it has a good score then I'll attempt to create the game in real life, but if the game gets a bad score, I'll just scrap the idea. I know that seems strange to others but I use it for that haha! Now for the reasons in a nice list like all the other reviews do...

Pros

-Friendly cartoonish graphics
-Fun & perfect gameplay music
-Simply easy to learn
-Great fun mods
-Runs smoothly for Mac & Windows (I don't know about Lynx since I don't have one)
-Game price is good (If the game would cost $30, I would still buy it)
-Hours upon hours of non-repetitive gameplay
-Create your own goals and strive to complete them (Something I found that fits perfect with this game, for example, like trying to obtain a "11/10" review from a game reviewer which is also a achievement)
-This game is something that anyone can play, when I say anyone I mean anyone (My dad is 81 years old, he played this game and loads of fun...)
-No huge bugs

Cons

-Mods can be an easy way to ruin the game for you (Like the Cheat mod...)
-Once you complete everything, it gets boring unless you haven't unlocked all the achievements

My thoughts...
Honestly this game is pretty good, it even got a 4.5/5 from Microsoft!
I really got the best out of this game and the price is so worth it to have so many hours of fun. Now i know that people may have their opinions about this game either in a bad/good way. I'm a game developer so I really REALLY like this game.

Well their you go, you can purchase this game and have fun or you can miss out on hours of fun.
The choice is yours...

Created a hit game called School Tycoon that made me my first million (2 to be precise) then afterwards I started releasing a bunch of crappy titles and went bankrupt trying to create my own Post-apocalyptic RPG game series called Fallin.

I love Kairosoft's original Game Dev Story, so I was excited to try Tycoon. This is pretty much a clone of the original game and doesn't add much of it's own. What it does add seems to slow the pace and lack the charm of the original. If you're interested, go for Game Dev Story first

This game I believe broke the foundation for game dev tycoon's out there. This game is a very simple design but you can do so much more. I managed to play this game before it came steam a long time ago and just spent countless hours on it losing sleep at night. Time has passed and more similar games to this game comes out but this is still something to play. The only thing is its just getting old, there really isn't any new content and steam workshop isn't the reliable source but other than that its something worth a look at.

Really great game and super fun to play! I find myself not being able to stop after I begin to play because I want to try all of the different combinations. My only suggestion is that this game get the ability to have 2/3 save files because I want to keep my original company and then experiment with the many other ways to play.

Nearly went bankrupt developing games for the Dreamcast. Spent every last penny I had on a new high tech engine and a zombie survival game. Released it with many bugs and still made bank.

After first play through I went back just to do this...

  • Reach major title unlock
  • Make Call of Duty
  • Games 1-6 8.5 and higher
  • MW2=10/10
  • Hit CoD9
  • Gets 2/10
  • Makes 20 more identical to #9
  • Goes out of Business
  • Game over
10/10 would make CoD franchise fail again

Pretty simple game, but loses its replayability after a while.

It is fun to play through the game the first time, but after you have done it a couple of times there isn't really anything worth sticking around for as there isn't much of a difference between each of the games you make. It all starts to blend into a generic switch management game without much draw to replay.

Still a good game worth checking out.

Absolutely amazing game but disappointing at the same time.

Pros
- "Pick up 'n play" - After a year of not playing, you'll still remember the controls and mechanics.
- Very simple but yet effective UI.
- You make this game as difficult as you want - do you stick with small and medium games and make decent income, or do you focus on AAA MMOs and dominate the market with your financial power?
- There's actually a 'goal' to this game - to achieve as high of a score as possible before 36(?) in-game years.
- The game has a amazing casual feel and good gameflow, time spent playing will slip through your fingers like sand.
- You're not limited to just games and you will work your way up as you go along - you start off in a basement/garage building small text games and before you know it you're the CEO of a AAA company building your own engines and consoles.

Cons
- After moving in to your last office, having unlocked all the R&D stuff and after having built 1 or 2 consoles, the game gets boring really quickly. (Starting a new game might resolve this bug)
- To me personally, the game feels lacking, don't get me wrong, it is amazing as it is, but I feel like it could have been so much more. What would be nice is maybe building your own OS, creating your own software and maybe have the game expand more on the consoles you get to make. I understand that this is a game dev tycoon but I see this game more as an amazing base for a computer industry tycoon and I really do hope that the devs do something and try to expand on this.
- The Steam Workshop feels lacking, while there is a Steam Workshop, do not expect too much from it. Unless you want a more accurate translation to Chinese or Russian it might not be for you.

TL;DR
This is an amazing game and absolute worth however much money you happen to spend on it and will grant you many hours of enjoyable playtime and yet feels lacking in some areas. This is a game I would most definitely recommend

It's fun and a great time-waster, as long as you don't look at the soulless eyes of your workers. Always open, always watching. Getting a vacation every four years.

7/10 best beaten down office simulator.

Now this game is great, I mean I've never been good at strategic games but this one I think really fits my skill level, I like the theme of the game and love how it's structured, but less about how good it is and time to start actually critiquing it, first of all the in game reviews, some times I feel as if they sound kinda....flat?, for example I made a parody of star craft called "scar traft" and one of the reviews was "fun at stages" which made the in game reviews sound flat and lifeless, because there was no way for me to make the game online or not, then there's my next biggest issue, variety, during the start of the game I feel as if the amount of genre's you're given aren't very....varied, I feel as if you should have at least 10 different genre's from the start, and lastly my final issue with it is also with the start of the game, sequels, during my first play through of the game I wanted to make a sequel to the first game I made, so I made it, but then later on in the game I find out that the way I made my sequel ((obliviously making it an independant title)) wasn't the way I was supposed to do it, and the way I was supposed to do it was to advance more into the game, which was just......it made feel stupid to be entirely honest, this is my review of game dev tycoon.

Interesting game, takes a lot of knowledge about game history and experience of different types of games to play well (in the first game).

Get a bit boring and repetitive after a while, Also I didn't feel that I have real control over the development of games. Even nice new combo does not necessarily gives nice result.

And in the end, I have to develop too many good games to survive.

I've seen the game in my recommended section once in a while, never bothered to buy it. I have way too many games which I never get to play. This one will be no exception. I doubt I'll ever get around playing it for any significant amount of time. Hooooowever, that's not why I bought it. I read this and I found it so ironic that I had to shell out those few Euros to help out the devs. Irony at its best.

Thanks for the laugh. Worth the 8.99€

(Needed to play 5min to make the review. Got stuck in it for an half hour any way.... If I had more time, I'd probably try to advance further. It would be nice if it randomly generated game and engine names. I have not enough fantasy to make up stuff and Game #N is quite silly)
