    • Italians - Set sail to Venice and take the role as general in one of the Italian republics that emerged from the chaos after the collapse of the Roman Empire!
    • Indians - Put vast armies under your command, comprised of countless Camels and powerful Elephants.
    • Slavs – Even after the dissolution of the Mongolian Golden Horde, these icy planes of Eastern Europe still echo under the thundering hooves and countless boots of your soldiers.
    • Magyars - Lead the mighty Black Army over the Hungarian plains and command the fiercest cavalry forces that Europe has ever witnessed in the Middle Ages
    • Incas - Lead your armies along the shores of Lake Titicaca, defend your wealth and heritage from the invading Conquistadors and erect mighty structures to withstand the test of time.

  • Seven new Campaigns
    • Alaric: The trauma of the Hun invasion in the 4th century has shaped Alaric, the fearsome warrior king of the Goths. But can the beloved king secure a new homeland for his people in the territory of the collapsing Roman Empire?
    • Sforza: Always hungry for glory and wealth, Sforza wanders around 15th century Italy, offering his services to the highest bidder. Will he pick the right battles or make the wrong enemy? Take the fate of the young mercenary captain in your hands.
    • Bari: 400 years after the collapse of the Roman Empire, Italy is still up for grabs. Relive the tale of the port city Bari from the point of view of a Byzantine family, rising from the common soldiery to the nobility. Beware, for not only Bari is at stake, but also control of Southern Italy.
    • Dracula: History forged an incredible legend around the man who ruled Wallachia in the mid-14th century. Holding his ground against the vast armies of the expanding Ottoman Empire, his cruel tactics made him the most feared man in all of Eastern Europe. Shall his thirst for blood and the loyalty of his soldiers hold the Turks back for good?
    • El Dorado: Join Francisco Orellana and Gonzalo Pizarro on their quest to find El Dorado, the legendary Lost City of Gold, thought to be hidden somewhere in the vast Amazon rain forest. Will their quest along the Amazon river lead to lifelong prosperity or will they drown in their sorrow?
    • Prithviraj: As the 12th century comes to a close, India is divided between the ruling Rajput clans. One of them, the Chauhans, have just been blessed with a new king. His name is Prithviraj and his determination to unite the rival states is unprecedented. But what happens when he falls in love with the daughter of his enemy? And does he have the strength to stop a full-scale Muslim invasion from the west?
    • Battles of the Forgotten: Time has faded the names of many of the greatest leaders ever known. During their age they were famed for their fierceness on the battlefield, their just rule and their quest for power. Witness the path to glory of Richard the Lionheart, Minamoto no Yoritomo, Sultan Osman Ghazi, Khosrau and many more.

  • New LudaKRIS map size
  • Twitch.tv streaming integration
  • Spectator mode
  • New Game Modes
    • Treaty - Popularized in later titles, the economically focused “Treaty” gametype will be available in AoF. Also commonly known as “No Rush”, Treaty mode enables a limited duration of battle-free early growth before focusing on military might.
    • Capture the Relic - For a quick paced, action oriented battle the new “Capture the Relic” will see players rushing with their monks to take control of a single treasure and return it safely to base.

The experience of lag is so bad, the ping is always so high, and I always drop when the game nearly comes to an end...This is such an amazing game, and I really don't want the network problem to ruin the game, and hope that the steam server be better ....

I have to agree with other commenters. Campaigns are boring, often times impossible, and they don't keep with the AOE tradition of being able to replenish your resources. There don't seem to be any strategies to winning The Forgotten campaigns, only occasional luck. Very disappointing.

Do not bother to get this part of the game. Most of the scenarios are too slow, too hard, make no sense, and are generally no fun to play. You are often given one character who "must survive" and then given too few resources (and no way to make new ones) to make that happen. I've cycled through almost every option and I doubt I'll ever go back and try again. Very frustrating.

Originally a mod for Age of Empires II: Conquerors, The Forgotten adds new units, civilizations, game modes and more. It's a rather unique situation, as the original game - Age of Empires II - was released nearly 15 years ago, getting an official DLC so many years later. Microsoft and Skybox Labs hired the original team behind the Forgotten mod to work on this addon which can be interpreted differently. I see that as Microsoft willing to give us as much of an addon they can, this late down the line.

Looking from a fair perspective, this content pack does not add That much. A lot of people will consider the content sparse for it's price tag of 9€/$10, but I am personally blinded by my love for the original game and the very idea of getting to play new content for a 15 year old game. That does sadly make this review more of a fan's input, rather than an honest and neutral review. To be fair though, if you originally bought AOE2HD - a pretty niche title - you should already know what to expect out of this DLC. (Review of AOE2HD)

The main addition are the 5 Civilizations; Italians, Indians, Slavs, Magyars and Incas. They cover some pretty interesting historical and geographical locations that can easily be related with the exisiting civilizations. All with new unique units, building textures and strength/weaknesses towards other civilizations. The textures look very similar to that of the originals, and you will have a hard time figuring out this was originally a mod. Everything is very well polished overall, something I was personally a bit afraid of before playing it.

Only downside would be the Campaigns that did not capture me that well. Honestly the original campaigns probably would not either if it was not for the nostaliga playing them. They are much more advanced than the original campaign, since the modders have gathered techniques over the years. All the maps are much more compact and detailed, and they take much longer to complete. They are often more about 1 unit/hero making it through the map rather than base-building and army-training.

If you Love Age of Empires II, intrigued by the thought of 5 new Civilizations to play with online, or on LANs, this is an excellent addon. Not so much if you are a single-player only and were looking for just the campaign.

It's been a really long time since any Age of Empires game has had attention. I'm glad they gave this one some, in particular, since this should serve as a substitute for the long-awaited Age of Empires IV, until such time as that can be released. Maybe never. Hopefully next year, or the year after that. But maybe, this will work.
Plenty of new civilizations and campaigns to choose from, there is literally no reason to not have this. It's not even one of those modern-day DLCs that adds stuff that should be in the game but wasn't there for some reason. No, this was made entirely for HD, and I guarantee wasn't even conceived when the original game was under construction. It just adds a little flavor, not base content. And the result tastes really good.
Mmm, food analogy.

The campaign content is ridiculously sub-par. No story elements like voice acting & music.
Hardly any new artwork... the new History section recycled old artwork from old campaigns.
I don't even care about these civs...
This was a mod before, why am I paying $10 for it?
What gives?

Well the rest of what has been done is extremely appreciated for all AOE fans alike. Despite being "Forgotton" for a reason, the new civs are actually beautifully balanced. New sprites for units/buildings, new everything...
When you get past the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t effort at campaign cinematics, the campaign themselves aren't TOO bad.
Multiplayer is actually really fun now, this definitely adds a lot to multi/singleplayer Standard Games.
This will probably be almost necessary for joining strangers' multiplayer games as well.

Don't expect Conqueror's-quality expansion. This should be half its price.
If you're shy to new additions to a perfect vanilla game, you can skip it.
If you want a little more, it's okay. Not terribly necessary, but got it where it counts.

Age Of Empires II The Forgotten Review
This expansion pack was originally a mod and was made by fans essentially so there is some key differences between forgotten and African Kingdoms exapansions. One being the fact that Forgotten has no audio dialogue on campaign scenarios or cutscenes.

Terms of all expansions i believe this one has most vast campaigns in terms of hours. While some of them are hit or miss, Alaric being awesome and El Dorado being lackluster (My opinion) i still find it rather good expansions. There is lot of other stuff added of course among AI improvements, New units, new technologies and new civilizations.

I Believe Forgotten might have best campaigns out of them all among. IF you like single player stuff this is the expansion to go with, if not i suggest getting african kingdoms (Just buy both really)

Wow,
Nice new additions.
Really wish there was some voice acting for the campaign though.

New units, new civilizations (Incas, Indians, Italians, Magyars/Hungarians, and Slavs), and brand-new singleplayer campaigns! Also has new features, such as new game modes and Twitch.tv integration, for the multiplayer scene.

This brand-new expansion set for Age of Empires 2 really enlivens a 16-year old game with new strategies, new tactics, and new possibilities for building your historically-inspired empire.

Highly recommended!
