Explore a host of new features with Age of Empires II - The Forgotten including
  • Five New Civilizations
    • Italians - Set sail to Venice and take the role as general in one of the Italian republics that emerged from the chaos after the collapse of the Roman Empire!
    • Indians - Put vast armies under your command, comprised of countless Camels and powerful Elephants.
    • Slavs – Even after the dissolution of the Mongolian Golden Horde, these icy planes of Eastern Europe still echo under the thundering hooves and countless boots of your soldiers.
    • Magyars - Lead the mighty Black Army over the Hungarian plains and command the fiercest cavalry forces that Europe has ever witnessed in the Middle Ages
    • Incas - Lead your armies along the shores of Lake Titicaca, defend your wealth and heritage from the invading Conquistadors and erect mighty structures to withstand the test of time.

  • Seven new Campaigns
    • Alaric: The trauma of the Hun invasion in the 4th century has shaped Alaric, the fearsome warrior king of the Goths. But can the beloved king secure a new homeland for his people in the territory of the collapsing Roman Empire?
    • Sforza: Always hungry for glory and wealth, Sforza wanders around 15th century Italy, offering his services to the highest bidder. Will he pick the right battles or make the wrong enemy? Take the fate of the young mercenary captain in your hands.
    • Bari: 400 years after the collapse of the Roman Empire, Italy is still up for grabs. Relive the tale of the port city Bari from the point of view of a Byzantine family, rising from the common soldiery to the nobility. Beware, for not only Bari is at stake, but also control of Southern Italy.
    • Dracula: History forged an incredible legend around the man who ruled Wallachia in the mid-14th century. Holding his ground against the vast armies of the expanding Ottoman Empire, his cruel tactics made him the most feared man in all of Eastern Europe. Shall his thirst for blood and the loyalty of his soldiers hold the Turks back for good?
    • El Dorado: Join Francisco Orellana and Gonzalo Pizarro on their quest to find El Dorado, the legendary Lost City of Gold, thought to be hidden somewhere in the vast Amazon rain forest. Will their quest along the Amazon river lead to lifelong prosperity or will they drown in their sorrow?
    • Prithviraj: As the 12th century comes to a close, India is divided between the ruling Rajput clans. One of them, the Chauhans, have just been blessed with a new king. His name is Prithviraj and his determination to unite the rival states is unprecedented. But what happens when he falls in love with the daughter of his enemy? And does he have the strength to stop a full-scale Muslim invasion from the west?
    • Battles of the Forgotten: Time has faded the names of many of the greatest leaders ever known. During their age they were famed for their fierceness on the battlefield, their just rule and their quest for power. Witness the path to glory of Richard the Lionheart, Minamoto no Yoritomo, Sultan Osman Ghazi, Khosrau and many more.

  • New LudaKRIS map size
  • Twitch.tv streaming integration
  • Spectator mode
  • New Game Modes
    • Treaty - Popularized in later titles, the economically focused “Treaty” gametype will be available in AoF. Also commonly known as “No Rush”, Treaty mode enables a limited duration of battle-free early growth before focusing on military might.
    • Capture the Relic - For a quick paced, action oriented battle the new “Capture the Relic” will see players rushing with their monks to take control of a single treasure and return it safely to base.

Love the HD and expansions! Fun to play a game I played horribly years ago.

I bought this Expansion thinking that the new civilations would be available in all modes of the game including Multiplayer Mode and the Single Player Standard Game. They are not. Apparently, the new civs are only accessible during the new campaigns. This is disappointing. I definitely like the HD, but this Forgotten expansion is not worth buying. Sorry.

Age Of Empires II The Forgotten Review
This expansion pack was originally a mod and was made by fans essentially so there is some key differences between forgotten and African Kingdoms exapansions. One being the fact that Forgotten has no audio dialogue on campaign scenarios or cutscenes.

Terms of all expansions i believe this one has most vast campaigns in terms of hours. While some of them are hit or miss, Alaric being awesome and El Dorado being lackluster (My opinion) i still find it rather good expansions. There is lot of other stuff added of course among AI improvements, New units, new technologies and new civilizations.

I Believe Forgotten might have best campaigns out of them all among. IF you like single player stuff this is the expansion to go with, if not i suggest getting african kingdoms (Just buy both really)

I love AOE 2, But seriously ♥♥♥♥ these fanmade ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t campaigns, Path finding ♥♥♥♥ing sucks cause the map is full of a bunch of stupid ♥♥♥♥ing trees and ♥♥♥♥, Missions are stupidly hard, I like a challenge don't get me wrong, But who the ♥♥♥♥ thought up these missions, that take over an hour to beat, thought these missions would be fun and challenging? They're ♥♥♥♥ing tedious, Can't beat certain missions cause the AI can just spam an unlimited amount of soldiers, Like in the Dracula campaign, There's a mission that plays out like a game of Risk.... If i wanted to play ♥♥♥♥in' Risk I'll go out and buy the ♥♥♥♥in' board game I bought this to play new ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ campaigns for one of my favourite games, Can't beat the mission though cause the stupid AI keeps spamming an insane amount of units and there isn't a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ thing i can do about it, But I'll keep playing this, I'm ♥♥♥♥♥♥ off about how unnecessarly hard the campiagns are yes but I'm ♥♥♥♥in' beating them somehow.

I am very mixed by this. I got it in the sale and paid £1.99. Anything up to about £2.50 yes buy it! It adds enough stuff for it to be worth it, updates certain things, new builds and the new civiliations to play as. Howeverrr.... For the full price of £6.99 or near to that, No. I can not reccomend this. It doesn't do enough and doesn't add enough to deserve that I don't think. The game plays well without it and it is not something I think you need.

The game itself is amazing as always. The real fun is in the multiplayer scene. The only problem is there are no servers. Its p2p. So we get laggy if playing from far apart. And its only fun when its a full 4v4

I always loved this game, and for me, a 8 years old child, the AI were so easy, now whith the Steam Version you can se the progress of this game, the AI are so hard (sometimes), and it becomes the game to hard to master, now i always loved the Conquerors and Age of Kings, i see some changes, its not full HD but idk, because i remembered my childhood.

Now...the DLC The Forgotten
I was so dissapointed of what refers of this expansion, i came to play multiplayer with my friends and the LAG was so annoying, you can´t enjoy this DLC with this new civilizations, new items, new campaigns with this LAG, i hope microsoft could work on this because i completely, will never play this dumb DLC with that lag in the multiplayer. i could give a 10/10 to this game but not, just correct the lag and you will obtain a 1000000/10000000 from me.

If you are reading this review you probably know about the main game so I'll be focusing on the Forgotten.

The Forgotten is a new AOE2 expansion after more then 10 years. You get to play a few new civilizations, out of which I mainly enjoy the Slavs and the Magyar. There are also many new campaigns and I found some of them insanely difficult, especially in later missions. But I admit I'm a somewhat clumsy real-time strategy player.
This expansion is not an expansion befitting the era in which we live, but an expansion, designed, as if it would come out in 2001, and so it was intended, to stay true to the spirit od the game. In my opinion it's not as good as The Conquerors, especially because some of the campaigns feel a little wierd and because it lacks any voice overs and captivating storytelling. There are a few new good castle researches, finally some good balancing and overall fixes.

Buying this expansion is a no-brainer if you own AOE2 HD, so buy it and enrich your AOE 2 experience.

It's a simple expansion with a handful of additional races to choose from so there isn't much to actually review so I'll just reiterate my previous (albeit short) review of AOEII itself:

LOVE it. The new HD textures are absolutely incredible. Can't get enough of the old-school RTS LAN feeling.

A GREAT add-on to an AWESOME game!

The price is well worth for the amount of content you get in the game. Graphics still look solid, and the game is improving in every aspect! Plus the devs are active at fixing the bugs that do pop-up time to time.

I don't even know where to begin. I'm trying to stay calm after rage quitting this game. Well, for starters, if you're going to buy this "DLC", know that it is going to make you angry. I haven't yelled at and rage quit a game in a long time. I started off playing the Alaric campaign, and I first noticed some issues with A.I. pathing. You tell units to move to an area and instead of taking a straight line approach/path of least resistance, they will walk the whole way around the map sometimes to get there. And it's a clear path, no trees or bushes in the way, they just...don't do what you tell them to do. You have to move them in small stages, a few feet at a time to get them where you need them to be. And speaking of trees and bushes....

Back in the early 2000's when I was playing this game, I developed a taste for making scenarios. Now, like a lot of others, your first scenario or two is just jumbled garbage. A statue here, a pile of rocks there, Gaia units hidden in the woods, muddy paths criss crossing everywhere, dotted with random trees and bushes-- it's a mess, because you're learning what makes a good scenario. This DLC reminds me of those times. It's like a beginner's scenario gone wild. So much random crap splayed out all over the place. I think that may be part of the pathing issues.

Oh my. And then there's the difficulty. Again, back in the day I liked to make scenarios that were very one sided against myself, to see if I could beat my own monsterous creation. Sometimes I won, sometimes I didn't. 50/50 chances. This DLC is like that, but it seems like a very small chance of winning. Seriously...what in the name of jeebus were they thinking? Giving you a few units, telling you to go over there, when you get there---BOOM! HELLO GIANT OPPOSING ARMY THAT IS VERY OP'D!! Most of what I've played has no way to replenish your troops for most of if not all of the scenario, and even if you get villagers, like in the third Alaric scenario AFTER THE AMBUSH OF OP'D UNITS, you get constantly rekt by the endless stream of enemies from the fortress before you can even establish yourself. Way, way, too hard. And it's horribly unbalanced with resources as well.

Want to play how you want? NOPE. You play it the way the creator MAKES you play it. You use their one and only strategy to beat the scenario. Want to send in an army of villagers to destroy the enemy town? Nope. Screw you. Convert all their units with monks? Nope. Screw you. The game is on rails for the most part, and I'm not really into that. But that's personal preference I guess. Which leads me to this...

Triggers. Oh boy. We got a bit excessive with those in this expansion....and they fail most of the time. "Trumpet sounds" Screen pans down to some area/units that advance the story slightly, MORE TEXT to read, come back to Main unit. Start to move--"Trumpet sounds" screen pans down to some unit/area AGAIN...same text to read...AGAIN. Rinse and repeat 20 more times. Some of the triggers are broken like that. The amount of event triggers is quite annoying.

And no voice acting...not winning any awards for that. But, again, personal preference. I'd prefer voices, but whatever.

-So, a few good points to say about it. It's got some new units/buildings, that's pretty cool.
-All the campaigns can't be garbage...right?

But, in general, this expansion is not very good. I want to like it, but it doesn't want me to like it.

11/10 would rage quit again.

Edit: Holy Roman Empire Batman! The fourth scenario in the Alaric campaign (Sack Of Rome) is so terrible I think I want to kill myself. The entire thing is on rails to the point that I thought I was watching a movie about this game, and when you finally get to build an army, by the time you have enough resources to start spewing a few guys out of your barracks, you get attacked and killed by a horde of enemies that comes out of nowhere. Not to mention, it's timed. It tells you to select Athaulf when you're ready to attack, but after a very short time it just moves on to the next phase of the train ride anyway. And then there's delivering the orders to attack via courier....click on area courier needs to go, he heads there, running across City Guard patrolling then through a clusterf**k of enemies and towers. Killed repeatedly. The enemies block off your path and violate your ♥♥♥♥♥♥ with spears and arrows. Not fun. Most boring and stupid scenario so far, and that's saying something.

It's been a really long time since any Age of Empires game has had attention. I'm glad they gave this one some, in particular, since this should serve as a substitute for the long-awaited Age of Empires IV, until such time as that can be released. Maybe never. Hopefully next year, or the year after that. But maybe, this will work.
Plenty of new civilizations and campaigns to choose from, there is literally no reason to not have this. It's not even one of those modern-day DLCs that adds stuff that should be in the game but wasn't there for some reason. No, this was made entirely for HD, and I guarantee wasn't even conceived when the original game was under construction. It just adds a little flavor, not base content. And the result tastes really good.
Mmm, food analogy.

Originally a mod for Age of Empires II: Conquerors, The Forgotten adds new units, civilizations, game modes and more. It's a rather unique situation, as the original game - Age of Empires II - was released nearly 15 years ago, getting an official DLC so many years later. Microsoft and Skybox Labs hired the original team behind the Forgotten mod to work on this addon which can be interpreted differently. I see that as Microsoft willing to give us as much of an addon they can, this late down the line.

Looking from a fair perspective, this content pack does not add That much. A lot of people will consider the content sparse for it's price tag of 9€/$10, but I am personally blinded by my love for the original game and the very idea of getting to play new content for a 15 year old game. That does sadly make this review more of a fan's input, rather than an honest and neutral review. To be fair though, if you originally bought AOE2HD - a pretty niche title - you should already know what to expect out of this DLC. (Review of AOE2HD)

The main addition are the 5 Civilizations; Italians, Indians, Slavs, Magyars and Incas. They cover some pretty interesting historical and geographical locations that can easily be related with the exisiting civilizations. All with new unique units, building textures and strength/weaknesses towards other civilizations. The textures look very similar to that of the originals, and you will have a hard time figuring out this was originally a mod. Everything is very well polished overall, something I was personally a bit afraid of before playing it.

Only downside would be the Campaigns that did not capture me that well. Honestly the original campaigns probably would not either if it was not for the nostaliga playing them. They are much more advanced than the original campaign, since the modders have gathered techniques over the years. All the maps are much more compact and detailed, and they take much longer to complete. They are often more about 1 unit/hero making it through the map rather than base-building and army-training.

If you Love Age of Empires II, intrigued by the thought of 5 new Civilizations to play with online, or on LANs, this is an excellent addon. Not so much if you are a single-player only and were looking for just the campaign.

The campaign content is ridiculously sub-par. No story elements like voice acting & music.
Hardly any new artwork... the new History section recycled old artwork from old campaigns.
I don't even care about these civs...
This was a mod before, why am I paying $10 for it?
What gives?

Well the rest of what has been done is extremely appreciated for all AOE fans alike. Despite being "Forgotton" for a reason, the new civs are actually beautifully balanced. New sprites for units/buildings, new everything...
When you get past the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t effort at campaign cinematics, the campaign themselves aren't TOO bad.
Multiplayer is actually really fun now, this definitely adds a lot to multi/singleplayer Standard Games.
This will probably be almost necessary for joining strangers' multiplayer games as well.

Don't expect Conqueror's-quality expansion. This should be half its price.
If you're shy to new additions to a perfect vanilla game, you can skip it.
If you want a little more, it's okay. Not terribly necessary, but got it where it counts.

New units, new civilizations (Incas, Indians, Italians, Magyars/Hungarians, and Slavs), and brand-new singleplayer campaigns! Also has new features, such as new game modes and Twitch.tv integration, for the multiplayer scene.

This brand-new expansion set for Age of Empires 2 really enlivens a 16-year old game with new strategies, new tactics, and new possibilities for building your historically-inspired empire.

Highly recommended!

It's pretty good. It adds a few new civilizations with unique buildings and many new game-impacting technologies. The AI isn't as good as the Conquerors AI, but you have the option to switch to Conquerors AI. The Campaign is rich in content, but it mainly consists of going from checkpoint to checkpoint and it's packed with many scripted scenes that you can't skip and keeps constantly changing the teams you and your units, and while you may learn from them, they won't simply allow you to play the game. With all the game modes, units, techs, and civs that it adds, it's a great expansion if you are into online matches.

More AoE2 action, though this time with some new civs and new single-player campaigns to play with. I played through all of the new content and found it to be of a similar level of quality to what was in the main game... and that is really saying something. Whether it be the adventures of Pizzarro that eventually led to the fall of the Incan Empire, or Vlad Tepes' (Dracula) brutal but ultimately doomed stand against the Ottoman Turks, all of the new content allow you to play through historical scenarios that you normally don't see in historical strategy games. It's quite refreshing. :D

If you already have AoE2 and like it's single-player campaigns, I see no reason to pass on this. It's even more of the good stuff from the original game. :D

As a player who values games on their singleplayer campaigns, I can honestly say that this expansion disappointed me beyond all belief. I went in expecting a campaign based around the standard Age of Empires basics: Building and Expanding. What I got was a mediocre campaign with extremely poor writing and gameplay based on micromanaging a set of units that you couldn't replace. If I had wanted such a campaign, I would have gone to one of the brilliant custom scenarios made by the community, not a $10 waste of cash. The new civilizations are intriguing, but ultimately seem to be the only good thing about this expansion.

When I enter a campaign, I expect to have an on-rails sequence to begin with, followed by increasingly open scenarios that allow me to screw around with my preferred strategies. I NEVER want to see an entire campaign based around having no way to replenish your armies.
