Game could potentially be good, but it keeps crashing, and even sending the error report fails.

It's Catan, which by default I would recommend. However if you've never played the board game, I would not wish this on anyone as their first exposure. The graphics are terrible (even in 2D which I prefer), and the game is buggy at best. So clunky to play this, but again, it's only for hardcore Catan players that would want some vs. CPU practice in between matches with real people on the board game.

Great board/card game. I have this game on my android play store also. It's one of the "must have" board games in your collection. Nice and fast games if you're in a waiting room. Challenging too!

I picked this game up due to the fun I've had playing Catan with friends and, perhaps more importantly for this, the hours upon hours I spent "Catan - Die Erste Insel", which was released around 15 years ago. The nostalgia to the game wasn't hindered by the fact that (like with every other Catan game I've played) the AI characters are literally the same as those from the older games.

I loaded up this game, just to find there to be two options for the board: "Pretty but horrible to read" and "With this view, you might as well play the board game". As such, it's either painful to read or ugly and I expected better considering that the now 15 year old game still looks rather good and rather pretty close up due to the fact that when you zoomed in on towns/cities, roads and tiles bordering towns had people walking around and working. In terms of UI layout, I personally found it uncomfortable to use and annoying.

In terms of gameplay, it's doing Catan properly, though the AI has a tendency of only trying to hurt you rather than playing to win. Then again, it's not like the old game failed at having functional AI and a playable base game. With the only difference between the two being the Cities & Knights expansion.

As such, the reason why I have such a low playtime on this is because with the short amount of playtime I had, I decided that it would be a better use of my time to find my old copy of "Catan - Die Erste Insel" and play that instead as it still holds up after the 15 years it has been out for.

As such, don't bother with this and if you can understand some German, get an older version instead.

If you can get this in a sale then it's a nice quick way to learn your way around the board game, and it's a nice way to spend an hour or so relaxing on an evening. It hasn't crashed on me like many of the other reviewers state, but I did find the AI very difficult to beat even on easy mode. It's just, just about earned a recommendation from me but in my opinion, Catan is best played using the board game version with a few friends. 6/10.

WORST. GAME. EVER.

~game play is slow as [random expletive]
~insultingly annoying ingame personalities
~confusing icons, even when you know what they mean
~unintuitive play, including useless 'help' popups/buttons
~repetitive, annoying AI interactions, EVERY turn, complete with slow visual movements (rather than, for example, a short text summary and/or a "don't offer me trades" button)

I really, really like the board game irl. Like, REALLY like it. This game... my total of 2.4 hours on record does not include a completed game. Why? UI is lousy. AI is cooperative (with itself as different players). Game speed is ssslllooowww.

For $17? No. On sale? NO. Ever, for any reason? NO!

I wanted to like this game, and tried twice to play a full game through... but it's just badly translated from the board game, and deserves better - and if you're a player who likes the board game, so do you. After writing this review I will be hiding this game from visibility in my library.

Frequent crashes, the "random numbers" frequently heavily favoring AI, combined with the AI picking on me even when I am in last place has made this game very frustrating. I'd get my money back if I could. This game is total BS

This game is really tend to test your patience and whats else the difficulty of the game really set things to the worst ways.

If you are on easy mode, the comps will not pick on you so much until you are 2 points away from victory.

If you are on normal mode, the comps will mostly likely work against you from the very beginning. Also all dices roll have been confirm are scripted on the campaign mode. I have a few situations in normal mode that I must informed all of you about before you ever consider playing this game.

(All situations are in normal mode)
Situation 1: 3 comps and me playing on a map, for 30 turns; dice of 2 and 12 have been roll about 15 turns each + what is so unfair that there are two comps just keep using those resources on getting the development cards. So after 30 turns those two comps have about 20 development cards each. If that is not BS, then guess what they will use them to? They will use them just on you! So every turns they just throw a knight card out and take your resources that way.

Situation 2: when comes to trade, after they will steal your resource and they will try to trade that back to you regardless how many times you rejected them.

Also this game got no multiplayer, I bet this decision was make by the creator since he never like people playing his game without buying the boardgames itself. He should feel lucky that alot of people got such huge addiction to this game otherwise this game should be off the shelves from many stores by now.

Don't buy this game; it crashes constantly. It's kinda fun that you can "play" the base game, seafarers, and cities and knights expansions, except that the game always crashes. It's like trying to finish a jigsaw puzzle in the middle of an earthquake... there's gotta be something wrong with you to keep it up while the house is collapsing around you.

Many have complained about the game crashing, but I'm happy to say I haven't actually experienced any issues. The game has been running great. It has beautiful 3D animations but you can also play in traditional 2D format if you prefer (maybe this will help with some people's crashes?) Yes the AI may gang up on you but only if you are in the lead. They tend to attack the winning player which is to be expected in Catan. Overall I'm very happy with this purchase that I can pull up and play Catan any time I want without having to wait for others. My only issue is that I wish the tutorial for cities and knights was more helpful but you can read the rules on your own as you play and figure it out. 10/10

I feel sad for people that actually gave money for this game. Yes, it's Catan, our beloved board game and this is the only thing making me sit through this torture. Or pure madness, you choose.

I've seen bad games, but this....

1. Medium difficulty? How about everyone picking up on you! - I've seen NPCs putting random roads just to block me off completely, without any use for them. I've seen them stealing resources only from me. I've seen them blocking only my resources. I've seen them trading only between themselves. I've seen them depleting resources I held when they had no access to them. Nothing can help you if you are ahead in points.

2. The dice - if you want a fair game, this is not one. Someone here mentioned that the dice are the same after you load a safe. I can confim that. They are also mysteriosly "kind" to your opponents and their resources, that you are not connected to. Hey, you hold hexes with 8/6, so let's roll only 2s and 3s for the next 20 turns!

3. The daily dose of crashes - I've reached a point where it started to crash every 15 minutes, so pray if you forgot to save. Then there was that time when it crashed completely with the "running" bug. The bugs are numerous: Resources dissapearing or not being "drawn" properly; trades that you approve but somehow don't get anything; map zoom that doesn't show you the active map placement roads; development card crashes... I bet I am forgetting something.

4. No online multiplayer... I have no comment on this one.

All in all I've spent a lot of time playing it, but would not recommend it unless you appreciate winning against almost impossible odds. I love Catan, but honestly, this game is teaching me patience on a whole new level.

- Catan, it's a great board game!

Cons:
- It crashes more than Windows 98. It crashes more than a diabetic in a candy store. It crashes more than a teenage female asian driver who texts on their cell phone while driving and putting their makeup on.
- Bugs with gameplay where it seems to roll die automatically for me and I can't play my turn... not sure if this is a feature to enable auto-roll, but it is not what I intended to enable...

Terrible. The crashes are bad enough, but the complete contempt for the players showen by the developers is insulting. Not only does the AI cheat but there is no attempt whatsoever to hide the fact. Each game two numbers are going to get rolled more than all others combined so it starts off as a guessing game when selecting starting locations. Then once the player is takes the lead the dice will continuously role numbers that suit the AI.
You can still win easily enough if you started out on the 'lucky' numbers, until you try the cities & knights expansion. No matter how many active knights, and how high you have leveld them if the barbarians win an attack the game will penalise the player. Constantly reducing my cities to settlements while one of the AI players with no knight at all is ignored. Last time that happened I finally hit the 'delete local content' button.

Use the money you would have spent on this crap to buy the board game, or if lack of players is your problem, use the money to pay a homeless person to play with you.

Game crashes on start. This is apparently an known issue, but there are no consistent solutions.

If you have multiple monitors, you might be able to get it to work if you disable all of them but one. But I'm not doing that every time just to start a game. I don't even play games that make the use of my second monitor impossible when they are running.

Yeah well Catan looked nice at first but after a while I got the same impression as many people on the forums: This game seems to be cheating in terms of dice rolls. To put it bluntly: This is a real shame for it totally ruins the gameplay.

So to round things up. Don't buy this game. Don't support this kind of fraud.

Pros:
-It plays as the game should i.e. It is Catan
-Basic and advanced modes
-Multiple maps for differet play styles
-AI's with different play strategies
-Pretty good graphics

Cons:
-Crashes atleast once per game, fortunatly always picks up where it crashed
-No bug fixes or updates anymore
-The zoom function when choosing where to build won't allow you to move around the screen to look around.
-AI's use robber to target winning player everytime, sorry but if they have no resources it doesn't help.

Overall:
You get what you want basically, Catan. Yes an issue can arise and its missing functions like a working multiplayer, but in the end you get to play it as the game is.

The game cheats so much that it is really unplayable. The computer players are always drawing cards while the real player, myself, gets almost no cards. When a seven is rolled and the computer takes a card from me by dropping the robber on my tile the very next roll is ALWAYS whatever number the computer blocked (salt in the wound i guess). On two occasions the computer has traded in cards it did not have, such as when there were no wheat in play and the computer had not traded for wheat yet it suddenly had two for a city and the win. Without playing a knight card or any other card that would remove a card from my hand the computer player has three times taken a card from my hand. The most common numbers rolled on average are the central numbers, yet there have been entire games where a 5 6 or 8 have NEVER been rolled, simply becuase i am the only one on those spaces. the computer has, twice now, placed a settlement on a twelve and rolled a twelve 8 to nine times in that game, yet 5 was never rolled once.
All in all a waiste of money time and effort

Catan is a fun board game. It's a fun Android/iOS game. It is a HORRIBLE PC game. It crashes pretty much all the time at random. A dice roll can crash the game. Hitting 8 victory points can crash the game. Trading resources can crash the game. Anything at all can crash the game!

The campaign is unplayable because just trying to play certain levels crashes the game.

I'm really serious about all these crashes. It's no joke. What is a joke is that I can run Tomb Raider, Bioshock Infinite, Metro Last Light, etc on max settings (or close enough), but I can't run a board game.

If the game was playable, it would probably be awesome. I have the Android game also that plays just fine. Playing as a video game eases all the resource management and whatnot from the board game. The game keeps track of everything for you.

The AI cheats hardcore also. I can the AI being intelligent and trying to stop the human player(s) from winning when victory is near, but you can be at 9/10 victory points with the AI at 3/10, and suddenly no one will ever roll numbers you can use again. The game replaces difficulty with implausible dice roll outcomes. The computer also constantly offers horrendous trades and won't accept fair ones. If you have one brick and no source of brick, they will routinely try to take your only brick in exchange for a sheep you already have 8 of. Robber rolls also seem to occur more frequently when the human player(s) are past the hand size limit. It isn't impossible to beat the AI. It's just frustrating to wait turn after turn after turn and see it rolls nothing but 3s and 5s because you don't have 3s or 5s.

If you like Catan, just get the mobile/tablet game. There's no online mutliplayer in any version of the game which is sad. There's a major trend in board games coming to PC/mobile that don't have mutliplayer. There is hot seat multiplayer which works fine. I play with a friend regularly on my Android device. It's good times.

Pros:
+ It's the Catan we all know and love

Cons:
- The dice are not random. Save a game and then play a round. Load the same save again and then watch as the same exact numbers are rolled.
- Random crashes all the time.
- Seemingly abandoned by developer. No updates other then language localization in well over 1.5 years.
- Tutorial is basically nonexistant. They just throw you into a normal game.
- Unintuitive User Interface. No tooltips that popup to help you figure out what is what.
- Game bugs out constantly and when you roll the dice, it actually gives you resources for a completely different number.
- No online multiplayer, only hotseat.

I can keep going with the negatives however there is no point. I would simply avoid getting this game as the frustration of bugs/crashes is much higher then the fun value.

Huge fan of Catan, so I thought I'd take a chance on this. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed.

Pros:
Visually it looks good, or at least enough for a board game based on Catan.

It handles all the rules for you so you don't have to stop the game and engage in debates. Not that you would with this version anyway (more on that later), and it includes all the scenarios and a map editor (though I haven't tried that yet).

Cons:
Controls are lacking. The map can be squirrelly to navigate. If you're using a touch-screen it's nigh-impossible. When using my Windows 8 touchscreen laptop I kept flying off into some unknown corner of the map and tapping on buttons would cause other buttons to active. The interface isn't very intuitive and it doesn't have pop-up text to help with identification.

Buggy. As others have pointed out, it's buggy and prone to crashing.

No multiplayer. This is probably the biggest negative. It's on Steam. Why not let you play with other players who own the game? I'm guessing they don't want competition to their own multiplayer subscription site, but then why even bother with this version in the first place?

Graphics options. While the graphics look decent, the lack of resolution options is very disappointing.

TL;DR: The game isn't worth the asking price. I picked it up on sale and don't completely regret it simply because I still fire it up every now and then just get a Catan fix when I can't round up a couple more players for the board game, but otherwise this one just sits in my library collecting virtual dust. The biggest disappointment is how close they are. If they fixed the bugs, tweaked the interface, and added multiplayer through Steam, it would instantly be a classic.

Game is a great fix if you cant get people together to play the real thing, however in its current state, the game crashes often, so if you plan on playing the campaign, be prepared to save after every turn because:

Trading causes the game to crash

Rolling the dice causes the game to crash

Builing a road causes the game to crash

Not having a settlement on a pasture causes the game to crash

Moving the robber causes the game to crash

Clicking needlessly causes the game to crash

Right click causes the game to crash

Getting a brick on a 9 roll causes the game to crash

Upgrading a city without the exact resources causes the game to crash

Building a settlement on a 3:1 port causes the game to crash

Asking your girlfriend to bring you a glass of water causes the game to crash

Petting your dog causes the game to crash

Checking your phone causes the game to crash

Writing this review caused the game to crash

Wondering why you wasted 20 dollars on a borderline unplayable game that doesn't auto save so when it crashes you get to watch 45 minuites of your life go straight down the drain causes the game to crash

Seriously, game would be fine if they fixed this ♥♥♥♥.

TL;DR: Playing the game causes the game to crash.

HORRIBLE: I love Catan. Probably one of my favorite board games, however, this adaptation of Catan is HORRIBLE! If you love Catan and want to play a digital copy, play it on Xbox Arcade. It alot easier to manuever throughout the game, has speed control, and allows for multiplayer across the internet. This piece of crap only allows multiplayer on the same computer. I never write reviews, so this just goes to show how much this game is worthless. If I could get a refund from any game, this would be it! As well, this game is buggy and crashes alot!

Fun game, but like most other people, this game crashes every 25 or 30 mins. The game does not include an auto save feature and having to save every 5-10 mins is annoying. Would like to see random crashes fixed or an auto save feature implemented. Seeing as these problems have been happening with this game for months, I doubt either of those are ever coming. I ended up paying less than $2 for Catan: Creators Edition during the Steam Holiday Auction and that's about as much as I recommend anyone paying for this game in it's current state. Good board game, terrible programming and support.

Constantly crashing. I bought this game when it first came out and decided to try again today hoping the bugs were fixed, but nope. Still crashes roughly every 20-30 minutes in game making the campaign nearly unplayable. If they can't fix the bugs, they could at least give some sort of auto-save so I'm not constantly losing progress in the game.

The developers had one job for this game, make a good version of Catan. And for the most part they did that well. With odd storyline and characters aside. There's a good amount of options and decent campaign, enough to keep you entertained while playing solo.

But now we reach the biggest drawback of this one. Absolutely no multiplayer! I don't understand how they saw a game like Catan and didn't include multiplayer. Would you leave multiplayer out of Monopoly? How about Risk? Chess? Then why the hell does this not have it!? As cool and fun the rest of the game can be. I bought this to play Catan on my PC, with friends. And the game just doesn't do that.

If you are a true Catan enthuiast or can get past some annoying voice acting and dated models, There's a lot for you here. But if you're more casual like me and just want to play with some buddies, look else where.

Catan is very fun, but this is a terrible release (As of May 12 2014). My PC blows the hardware requirements out of the water with a fresh image of windows 8.1 x64 and the game crashes randomly.

Whats worse, is starting a new game will let you play the longest, usually around 30 - 45 mins before a crash. Subsequent crashes (after reloading the game to your last save) are usually within 5 - 15 minutes. I have even tried to muddle through (since I am a serious Catan fan) and keep saving every few turns, but the game ALWAYS crashes and i'm just done.

I cant believe I had to pay money for this.

Running in any compatibility mode does not help either and even after several updates, it continues to happen. I do not recommend the Steam version of this game.
