Stick with the board game version of Settlers of Catan.

While the game itself has always been good, the Steam version crashes constantly. There is also no multiplayer. No MULTIPLAYER! For Settlers of Catan! Instead you are playing against cheating AI players with some very corny voice-acted dialogue...while the voice acting is passable, it really just detracts from the game.
The music is very basic. There are only one or two tracks, and it is more likely to put you to sleep than help you stay engaged.
The absolute worst, though, is the after-completion roll graph. It flat out lies. I tracked it myself the last couple of games, and while the roll graph maintained that the rolls were the expected bell curve, they weren't. The most common rolls in both games were 3 and 5. 7 was next, true, but the next highest after that was 2. I've noticed the computer players favoring areas with 2, 3, 4, and 5 over the 6 and 8 that are supposed to be the most common rolls aside from the robber.

Overall, Settlers IS a good game. Just buy the board game instead.

Haven't tried online multiplayer, but local multiplayer and vs AI works great. AI is not perfect, but not noticably bad. Not sure what more you could ask for in this game. Great as far as video games based on board games I've played goes.

This would be a wonderful game if it worked. Which it doesn't. Which makes it awful. Do not buy this game.

Dice are not random (seriously, how does that happen in *any* game?).

Game crashes a lot.

Game is no longer updated.

Game is advertised with features that do not actually work.

Avoid this game like the plague that it is.

My Recommendation - DO NOT BUY THIS GAME - It crashes and crashes and crashes and crashes

+ I ran the game from the desktop icon with defalt settings - it crashed repeatedly
+ I ran the game from steam, with voices off and full screen mode off - it crashed repeatedly
+ I ran the game from steam, in Open GL mode, with voices off and full screen mode off - it crashed repeatedly
+ I ran the gane from the desktop icon, with voices off and full screen mode off - it crashed repeatedly
+ I ran the game using the .exe, with voices off and full screen mode off - it crashed repeatedly

Each time the game crashes a dialogue box appears saying that a crash log has been created, would I like to send it to the developers? If you say yes then a message comes up saying that "Sending error report over SMAPI is disabled (negative priority)"

The last update to the game appears to have been in 2014, since then there are numerouse posts saying that the game keeps crashing.

In a recent post the developors have asked users to manually send them a zip of addittional logfile information from a folder in / documents.

There does not appear to be any sign of a fix, or an acknolefgement from the developers that there is a serious problem with their software

DONT BUY.

Crashes every 10 min.
Dice are rigged as "difficulty" level
Developers clearly don't care about fixing issues, read other reviews. EVERYONE reports crashing, yet nothing's been done. I've personally reported over 50 crash reports.

I bought this game because I wanted to improve my strategy. When I play the real board game against real people, I get my fair share of victories, but I want to become better. Now I must admit, I usually try to get my opponents to drink at least two alcoholic beverages. On this version I just completed the campaigns. and I enjoyed it

pro:
-what you see is what you get. You get a copy of catan on your computer
-the AI is really not that bad. there are three difficulties
-the trading system is really well developed. the person who's turn it is initiates and then you can negotiate very well.

con:
-the game is quite crash-happy, but with me it didn't do so in the first three hours.
-it has cities and knigts, seafarers, but not traders and barbarians.
-you can race through the game quite fast

I bought this game. Awhile ago now. I have played the board game and I loved the game. Sooooo.....thought I'd try the online vesion.... :-( I didn't read the reviews as I was a little impatient to play one of my favourite board games.
And yes......what a crash to see that there is no multiplayer access.
I also agree with all of the other comments about how badly managed the production of this game has been. So many crashes. A totally unfair system. Yes you can get ahead by a loong margin. But then you hit a brick wall and watch the AI catch up. How many times is it possible to roll a 7 for crying out loud!? Five turns in a row?? Comon.
And then the Ai throws down all of those cards where they steal ALL of your resources and your cards of interest. Love seeing this happen.
But mostly what pisses me off is the lack of options for the game. You can't select skip all of the stupid bloody dialog. You have to click for every-bloody-action. It drives you mad. :-) I mean, how many times do you need to be told you picked up a card. Or the card YOU chose will do THIS action. Aahh...yeah...thats why I picked it. I know.

This could have been a great game had it the options and multiplayer. But it doesn't. And yes, I feel sad for me too for buying it.

I won't do this agin. I promise. Ok. F*&k, F#%k, S#!T. Dammit to hell.

Game could potentially be good, but it keeps crashing, and even sending the error report fails.

It's Catan, which by default I would recommend. However if you've never played the board game, I would not wish this on anyone as their first exposure. The graphics are terrible (even in 2D which I prefer), and the game is buggy at best. So clunky to play this, but again, it's only for hardcore Catan players that would want some vs. CPU practice in between matches with real people on the board game.

Catan is a fun board game. It's a fun Android/iOS game. It is a HORRIBLE PC game. It crashes pretty much all the time at random. A dice roll can crash the game. Hitting 8 victory points can crash the game. Trading resources can crash the game. Anything at all can crash the game!

The campaign is unplayable because just trying to play certain levels crashes the game.

I'm really serious about all these crashes. It's no joke. What is a joke is that I can run Tomb Raider, Bioshock Infinite, Metro Last Light, etc on max settings (or close enough), but I can't run a board game.

If the game was playable, it would probably be awesome. I have the Android game also that plays just fine. Playing as a video game eases all the resource management and whatnot from the board game. The game keeps track of everything for you.

The AI cheats hardcore also. I can the AI being intelligent and trying to stop the human player(s) from winning when victory is near, but you can be at 9/10 victory points with the AI at 3/10, and suddenly no one will ever roll numbers you can use again. The game replaces difficulty with implausible dice roll outcomes. The computer also constantly offers horrendous trades and won't accept fair ones. If you have one brick and no source of brick, they will routinely try to take your only brick in exchange for a sheep you already have 8 of. Robber rolls also seem to occur more frequently when the human player(s) are past the hand size limit. It isn't impossible to beat the AI. It's just frustrating to wait turn after turn after turn and see it rolls nothing but 3s and 5s because you don't have 3s or 5s.

If you like Catan, just get the mobile/tablet game. There's no online mutliplayer in any version of the game which is sad. There's a major trend in board games coming to PC/mobile that don't have mutliplayer. There is hot seat multiplayer which works fine. I play with a friend regularly on my Android device. It's good times.

Pros:
+ It's the Catan we all know and love

Cons:
- The dice are not random. Save a game and then play a round. Load the same save again and then watch as the same exact numbers are rolled.
- Random crashes all the time.
- Seemingly abandoned by developer. No updates other then language localization in well over 1.5 years.
- Tutorial is basically nonexistant. They just throw you into a normal game.
- Unintuitive User Interface. No tooltips that popup to help you figure out what is what.
- Game bugs out constantly and when you roll the dice, it actually gives you resources for a completely different number.
- No online multiplayer, only hotseat.

I can keep going with the negatives however there is no point. I would simply avoid getting this game as the frustration of bugs/crashes is much higher then the fun value.

Huge fan of Catan, so I thought I'd take a chance on this. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed.

Pros:
Visually it looks good, or at least enough for a board game based on Catan.

It handles all the rules for you so you don't have to stop the game and engage in debates. Not that you would with this version anyway (more on that later), and it includes all the scenarios and a map editor (though I haven't tried that yet).

Cons:
Controls are lacking. The map can be squirrelly to navigate. If you're using a touch-screen it's nigh-impossible. When using my Windows 8 touchscreen laptop I kept flying off into some unknown corner of the map and tapping on buttons would cause other buttons to active. The interface isn't very intuitive and it doesn't have pop-up text to help with identification.

Buggy. As others have pointed out, it's buggy and prone to crashing.

No multiplayer. This is probably the biggest negative. It's on Steam. Why not let you play with other players who own the game? I'm guessing they don't want competition to their own multiplayer subscription site, but then why even bother with this version in the first place?

Graphics options. While the graphics look decent, the lack of resolution options is very disappointing.

TL;DR: The game isn't worth the asking price. I picked it up on sale and don't completely regret it simply because I still fire it up every now and then just get a Catan fix when I can't round up a couple more players for the board game, but otherwise this one just sits in my library collecting virtual dust. The biggest disappointment is how close they are. If they fixed the bugs, tweaked the interface, and added multiplayer through Steam, it would instantly be a classic.

Game is a great fix if you cant get people together to play the real thing, however in its current state, the game crashes often, so if you plan on playing the campaign, be prepared to save after every turn because:

Trading causes the game to crash

Rolling the dice causes the game to crash

Builing a road causes the game to crash

Not having a settlement on a pasture causes the game to crash

Moving the robber causes the game to crash

Clicking needlessly causes the game to crash

Right click causes the game to crash

Getting a brick on a 9 roll causes the game to crash

Upgrading a city without the exact resources causes the game to crash

Building a settlement on a 3:1 port causes the game to crash

Asking your girlfriend to bring you a glass of water causes the game to crash

Petting your dog causes the game to crash

Checking your phone causes the game to crash

Writing this review caused the game to crash

Wondering why you wasted 20 dollars on a borderline unplayable game that doesn't auto save so when it crashes you get to watch 45 minuites of your life go straight down the drain causes the game to crash

Seriously, game would be fine if they fixed this ♥♥♥♥.

TL;DR: Playing the game causes the game to crash.

HORRIBLE: I love Catan. Probably one of my favorite board games, however, this adaptation of Catan is HORRIBLE! If you love Catan and want to play a digital copy, play it on Xbox Arcade. It alot easier to manuever throughout the game, has speed control, and allows for multiplayer across the internet. This piece of crap only allows multiplayer on the same computer. I never write reviews, so this just goes to show how much this game is worthless. If I could get a refund from any game, this would be it! As well, this game is buggy and crashes alot!

Fun game, but like most other people, this game crashes every 25 or 30 mins. The game does not include an auto save feature and having to save every 5-10 mins is annoying. Would like to see random crashes fixed or an auto save feature implemented. Seeing as these problems have been happening with this game for months, I doubt either of those are ever coming. I ended up paying less than $2 for Catan: Creators Edition during the Steam Holiday Auction and that's about as much as I recommend anyone paying for this game in it's current state. Good board game, terrible programming and support.

The greatest challenge in this game trying to complete a game without it crashing first, something I've yet to achieve. Add to this the lack of online play, the terrible transaction interface and you have an unashamed cash-grab of a game. Rather buy something else...I wish I had.

Constantly crashing. I bought this game when it first came out and decided to try again today hoping the bugs were fixed, but nope. Still crashes roughly every 20-30 minutes in game making the campaign nearly unplayable. If they can't fix the bugs, they could at least give some sort of auto-save so I'm not constantly losing progress in the game.
