Opulencia is getting a major upgrade

Hello Opulencians,

Big things are coming to The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot all throughout the summer. Here is the plan for the next months.

As you can see every time you open the game, the world of Opulencia is made up of magical floating castles. So our driving philosophy for the recent game developments and for the upcoming ones is to put more emphasis on these Castles. Yours will be the most important and prized possession you have and the major mechanics updates plus the new systems that we are working on right now are focused on it.



One of these big systems is something we started teasing a few months ago: "Defense Crafting". To quickly summarize this major change, your creatures and traps will be crafted from materials looted during attacks and from the tombstones left behind by other players dying in your Castle. With this system, you will be able to have multiple specializations of a creature or trap in your Castle as long as you have the materials to craft them. This will open up new strategies for Defenders and also bring more variety to the Castle setups encountered during Attacks.



Along with Defense Crafting, we'll be doing a major balancing pass on the creatures and traps, which will all undergo changes when the feature launches and in the following weeks. At the same time, we're also looking at the Heroes and the Attack gameplay. A few weeks ago we adjusted the combat dynamics by removing the healing effects from the skills and right now we're working on introducing new skills for all the classes. We're not ready to reveal anything yet but let's say that the Heroes of Opulencia will have new ways to deal with the Traps they encounter during Attacks.



Keep in mind that all the Castles in the game are created by other players so it's difficult to test how a seemingly simple change will affect existing Castles and Heroes and to anticipate all its effects. This is also why it's a bad idea to change several things at once, as we can't then properly analyze the consequences and draw conclusions, so few and incremental updates at a time are the way to go in order to keep the game balanced.

All the features that we mentioned above and others will come in different weekly patches throughout the summer. As you might have noticed, we increased the frequency of our updates, in order to release features, content or fix bugs faster. Some of these weekly patches will have big changes that we have been working on for a long time, while other patches will only have smaller changes that take less time to develop.

And while all of this is happening, we will be running different sales promotions, light hearted and serious events and competitions, which do not impede the development process in any way.

These big changes might be a bit unpolished at first but we will continue to work on them and on bringing other new and interesting things to The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot. Opulencia is getting a major upgrade.

[Event] Opulencia's Triple Double

Hello Opulencians,

With the Hero Draft in full swing, lots of you are currently experimenting and training their Knight to a satisfactory level of awesomeness. Not that it should require too much work, but we thought we could try and give you a little hand in the process: how would more Gold, Life Force and Experience sound? How about we actually double these values for a little while?

Opulencia's first Triple Double begins this Saturday at 12pm EDT and will end on Sunday, 6PM EDT. During that time frame, the Gold, Life Force and Experience you get from defeating Creatures in other people's Castles and the Gold and Life Force that your Mines produce will be doubled! Bling Mines will not produce more for the owners or pay out more Blings when destroyed by Attackers. During this event, the in-game Experience, Gold and Life Force boosts cannot be used.

Now sounds like a good time to get that Sir Painhammer to its Level 15, doesn't it? How about reworking your Castle's east wing too? No worries, we won't judge.

About the Game

The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot is a brand new game from Ubisoft Montreal that thrusts you in an outrageous medieval fantasy world called Opulencia where wealth, status and showboating are the name of the game!

As a newcomer to Opulencia, you will hack n slash your way through hundreds of castles designed by the ingenious minds of your fellow players!

Don’t forget to show them who’s boss by constructing deadly keep of your very own – in this kingdom, size really does matter!

Key Features

  • Castle Looting: Prepare your hero for battle and charge into one of many player-created castles to test your skills and might! Oh yeah, and don’t forget all the loot and gold waiting for you in the treasure room at the end of the castle.
  • Castle Defense: Protect your treasure from the greedy hands of your neighbors. You and your friends can build custom castles with majestic rooms and fill them with deadly monsters like fire-breathing dragons, nose-picking Cyclopes, swarming vampires and more. Then, surprise your foes by boosting your castle’s defenses with fearsome fire cannons, spike traps and other surprises. The more enemies perish in your castle, the higher the reward.

  • Intense Action: Play on your own schedule. Short sessions means you can play when you want to. It also doesn’t hurt to have others playing at the same time, but you don’t need them playing simultaneously to experience looting at its best.

Now, older, wiser, and all the other nonsensical things I've become, I'm once more editing this review. To reiterate on the original, DO NOT EXPERIMENT WITH CONTROLS. As much as it pains me to say that, it is the cardinal rule of Mighty Quest, as otherwise it will lock you in the tutorial, and cause crashes to desktop.
After you've made it through the; problematic, tutorial, you gain access to the actual game, which rapidly declines into the typical grind of dungeon crawlers, but without any of the nice little elements a full title has, such as plot, or developed rpg elements.

While in several other reviews I've written I say that you can never go wrong with free, Ubisoft felt pretty determined to test that statement, and I suggest caution when beginning to play. I truly do recommend this game to those players who find entertainment in playing games such as Diablo, or other dungeon crawlers, but don't have the time to invest more than ten minutes or so a day, but to players looking for a game with a bit more depth than a glorified Facebook game, I suggest you look elsewhere.

A Uplay account from Ubisoft is required (Come on, Valve! Stop this nonsense, please! Keep these games away from your store or ask other developers not to mess with your DRM...)

After too much handholding (15-20 minutes or so) with no way to skip you get to build your own castle in the sky. Initially it contains only bare necessities and three rooms. After placing traps and monsters to prevent other people from looting your mana and gold you have to beat the new-design castle yourself before it gets published. If you take too long, anyone will be able to take the treasures away from you.

You cannot place large numbers of monsters because you have a low budget at the start. You are just another newbie, unprotected and insecure. Other people may storm your gates, kill your monsters, loot your gold and mana. There is a way to defend your castle together with your monsters but I have yet to figure it out.

You get the resources to equip your hero and your castle by either collecting them from two wells (initially) or pillaging other people’s castles. And when you do it, you find out that camera controls are bad. Camera can be turned only by 90 degrees every time, four times to make a full circle. And what’s worse: it is impossible to change key bindings. And I wish camera turning were better when you have to choose what castle to loot next.

Then there is ability bloat or something. At about level 5 or 6 you find out that the number of open slots on your action bar is less than the number of available abilities. What to choose? Or is it possible to buy more slots with cash? You cannot drag other abilities (I think) while storming a castle and you cannot immediately equip looted items.

But is the game fun? Yes, quite fun. Only if Uplay doesn’t screw things over. Oh, yes, I also like the colors and the overall approach to graphics. It is a fairy-tale game. It inspires good mood if you can play. But if you can’t…?

Do I recommend the game? Only if the servers are stable. Otherwise, wait for it.

UPDATE 02.03.2013

After playing a couple of days (most of the played time counted by Steam is me doing something else while the game is alt-tabbed) I can add new information.

When other people attack your castle and take all your treasures it seems that only a percentage of the gold and life force in storage is taken. The treasures in your wells are not affected. They are safe. Right after a successful attack you cannot loot them but they get rebuilt quickly and then you can loot them.

Getting other people’s treasures can be as hard as it gets. Right after explosive traps become available and the traps that catapult your hero into the middle of a bunch of the explosive traps every step you take in an enemy’s castle can be deadly. Fun? Not sure.

Chicken castles!
However, there is a silver lining. Some friendly souls have decided that offering people a fast way to get loot and XP might be more fun. I’ve found one castle (and I am on the lookout for more) that instead of traps and monsters is populated by chickens only. With a proper level, these “monsters” give a lot of XP, drop a lot of loot and gold. High five! My castle is now one of them. Too bad I cannot place the chickens proper for my level: gold is hard to come by.

About in-game currency changes.
Judging by third-party wikis available on the Internet prices for castle upgrades have been drastically raised after the latest patch. And only the heart of the castle now requires life force for upgrades. All the other upgrades (except for creature upgrades in the research lab and new creatures in summoning portal) require gold.

I am now at level 21 and my castle is the same level. While one enemy castle can give you about 1000 gold (if you are lucky because people jealously guard their treasure) you need 26k to upgrade your portal (allows summoning new creatures), 20k or so to upgrade your research lab (allows improving existing creatures), 85k to upgrade your blacksmith to be able to make level 24-29 stuff (armor, weapons, jewelry), any piece of equipment costs between 18k and 40k. So basically you rely on drops.

If you are frustrated by dying a lot in other people’s castles, there are NPC castles, which are somewhat easy. And then there is a hidden feature: you can buy loot and potions (you cannot buy castle upgrades) with blings. For instance, if you don’t have enough gold, you press Buy button in the blacksmith shop and you see the option to purchase the item with blings. So those are useful.

Earning blings in the game is slow: they are only given by taking part in competitions (25 for a spot close to the top) and completing quests (one per zone). Buy them? They will not make your progression too easy but you will definitely be able to wear a complete set of gear proper for your level the way the developers probably intended.

Slow levelling
Even with blings that allow you to buy one-hour (real time, not in-game time, so don’t alt-tab out) 50% boosts for magic find, gold find, and XP levelling will be slow. But then why do I need to level? Raiding some bosses at lvl30? Some cooperative gameplay? No idea. Maybe there is nothing at the top except the ability to build your castle the way you want and stuff it with monsters and traps.

Heroes are kind of jerkwads, at least if you accept the premise of The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot. It's not enough that they've pillaged fortunes untold from dungeons and assorted baddies; in their idle hours, they engage in home invasions of their neighbors in Opulencia, their medieval Columbia-style floating city in the sky. Good thing for us, then, that this game's combat reminds us that there's some fun in being a jerk. Even better, Mighty Quest supports an unobtrusive free-to-play model, although a few drawbacks threaten to send this airborne lootfest crashing from the sky.
Stupid fun, though not particularly groundbreaking. It will certainly entertain those in need of a quick gaming fix, but won’t replace Diablo in your library any time soon

I only started playing this month and personally the game's been amazing so far.

It has my perosnal favourite components for a great game:
- Free to play
- Strategic design (feels like tower defence + puzzle)
- Micro control (reaction time, skill rotation, and maneouvering)
- Competitive ranking system
- User generated content

However, this game is not for everyone.

1. Players may feel cheated everytime a castle has a seemingly impossible design.

Players should be ready to attempt a castle over and over again, trying different approaches until you've become confident that you will beat it when you see it again (see problem 2 below). You are not penalized after your first failure but instead rewards you nicely once you've managed to beat a castle. It helps to see the game as an interactive puzzle.

2. Most castles are derivatives of each other which can make the game exhausting.

This problem will vanish once you have figured out several ways to beat the repetitions. You may even make a more foolproof version for your own. I personally find joy in creating a trap-puzzle game that only has one approach as a solution, and I don't get all the ideas by myself.

*This is a tentative review after reaching level 18 (in a week) with highest point being at ~700 crowns.
**These are presented more as opinianated guidelines rather than facts.

If you like to get F:ed in the A buy this game.

I bought the founderspack for a game with potential that now is not even the same game.. I put in time and real money to get all my time spent rolled back and also an reduction in the so called "bling" that i had bought did not even get all that back after the rollback, but yeah thanks for giving me some of it back i guess?

This game was fun, now its just a buggy game thats pay to win were they have added more and more buyable content with no regard for the community at all or the balancing of the game. Now people can put all monsters in a tight corridor and with traps push them in to a wall to make it IMPOSSIBLE to finnish there castle..

Oh and yeah its a pay or wait model.. if you dont pay.. you have to wait sometimes up to 24h or more to upgrade things in your castle..

If you plan on playing this game, DO NOT i can't state this enough times, pay for it. They will rip you off making you think you will get somthing good but in the end you will be sitting in a corner crying with your pants down money gone and and blood in your underpants.

WARNING: LONG READ
Very linear progressing game, due to limited choices in developing a castle or caracter there is nothing you can create to take your own path...
They have now changed the gamerules ripping me of my progress and making the game more lame, plus since they introduces validating after changes and leveling linked with your castle heart it is now no longer possible to have a 'large' castle with low level monsters. If you want to change anything you'll have to validate the castle, so making a quick change is no longer possible......
In short it went from a poor game to lame and uninteresting...and we are not even away from beta yet.
If you haven't got it GET SOMETHING ELSE.

Bought my chair years ago, luckely my carpenter doesn't come by once a month to ask me money for every time i sat in his chair (there is a counter build in)under the argument that he (or most of the times a greedy somebody else, but he who bought the 'legal' right) made it so many years ago and that was such hard work that he wants to be paid for it for the rest of his life, so he can sit on the beach.
Oh, and he also used poor quality paint, and the contract states that you have to pay him every year to repaint it and you are not allowed to do it yourself or force him to use quality paint....he can take away the chair any time you do not comply.
I would probably laugh at him, throw him & the chair out of my house while calling him a thief and build my own chair or just sit on the floor...

I like the looks and the slightly funny info of the game.
Might be something for people who want to play 5-10 minutes per day on the same game
But for all others.....
The way you should build your castle is very slow, about one move per day or per 2 days, if you want more you have to spend real money to get the game going.

But the real problem is the game itself:
Due to the slow buildup of your castle and/or hero it will probably not remain in my playlist for very long. The earning models to buy gems to speed up the process if you want to have some development in the game makes it unplayable. Same goes for the upgrades of the mines, in the beginning it's manageble, but somewhere near 140 per hour you have to wait 6 hours to get 14 pc more per hour, this takes 70 hours to reclaim the loss of 6 hours, with the following upgrades it gets even worse.
The whole game seems to revolve around getting virtual money, in the form of blue, green and yellow money, so you can progress.
I have to wait 2-3 days now and login twice a day to upgrade part A and then wait another 2-3 days (with 2 logins a day) for part B...when i'm at part D or F i can then build one extra room......for people who enjoy waiting for the grass to grow, this is it.
Oh, i can also spend real money to speed this up, good luck big spenders and bling lovers.

So you want people that don't pay extra to only reach a high level if they put in a few hundred hours at least and for real money they can build that in a few hours....it's the death of gaming.
Where the basis should be that you start with equal chances and may the best win, here it is: may the foolish with deep pockets win.
I am now at the point that the losses per day are equal to the earnings, if i want to proceed i have to log a lot of attacks (some 30 in one day) on other castles or spend real money.

As you can see, most positive reviews are from people who have only played it 2-3 hours, ask them again IF they ever reach 10 or more hours if it's fun.
To bad the gaming industry is so greedy, they destroy gameplay in the hopes they can get rich over your frustration.

About games that play online only, it is a concept where you pay money to get NOTHING.
You should never pay for that, unless you like to sponsor greedy and possibly lazy people.

Let's make that comparison in real life, you buy a new game like agricola (only single player i know, but this also works for multiplayer game like monopoly, but in the rules it states that sometimes your game is just gone for a few days or unusable for hours because:
a) you don't have the key to open the box and you have to connect via internet to the company, they will verify and send you an unlock code IF there servers are online, otherwise get a deck of cards because you can't open the box.
b) the company decides when they want to change something to the game and don't give you an access key to the box until you have accepted the new board/rules/pieces and have send proof of destroying the now, according to the company, obsolete parts of the game.
c) if you leave the game unlocked out of the box without logging moves somebody from the company drives by and closes and locks the game for you or takes it away because you broke the unreasonable and sometimes illegal licence agreement.
d) if the company thinks they have earned enough or that the profit is too low they push a button and all sold games are locked forever...in basic they destroy your property or at least making it impossible to use. but you may be able to buy the same game with more detailled visuals if you want and sign an even more absurd and immoral licence agreement.
e) you have to have a working internet connection even when you are at home playing agricola or monopoly with some friends and log all moves made by the players otherwise some people from the company come by and take away the game. Possibly if your internet connection is made via an android machine they also want to know your exact gps location while playing monopoly, all phonenumbers and calls you make or recieve, when you scratched your left ear, your eternal soul and your firstborn child.
f) if you want to win at monopoly you just pay the company and they give you different 'chance' cards and an instruction to make it look like you just picked them from the deck or maybe just programmable dice.....those naturally selfdestruct after use, so buy some more....


If the servers are down you only have some waisted harddisk space. If you are somewhere without internet you can't play although you pay....if it's a game you want to play again years later you suddenly discover that the servers are down and will never come up again. USELESS and in my opinion theft.

Singleplayer games that have no offline mode have no right of existence and should not be sponsored....


You used to have multiplayer games with lan capability, so you could play at home with friends, just as with monopoly and even start a server after years of being abandoned.....i'm almost wondering where my cd of RTCW is, although the graphics are crap the gameplay is good and after all these years it still works.
