Overview: First Person Horror
+ Creepy atmosphere set at the very end of the 19th century. The game takes place mostly in factory like setting.
+ The narrative and plot is excellent, journal entries are scattered throughout the game providing pieces of the story. The story touches upon some interesting themes.
+ Light puzzle solving elements to keep things interesting
+The game doesn't overstay its welcome, it is roughly a 4-6 hour experience.
+ The music is excellent and really adds to the overall experience
- The game lacks a lot of the terror from the Dark Descent. Despite the atmosphere, I never really felt threatened in any way. In the entire game there were only a few instances where the enemy would hunt you and even then it was very easy to just out run them to the next area. Part of the problem is that this game heavily streamlined many of the elements from the first game. Death has no consequence, sanity effects gone, refilling the lantern gone... . Many of the things that make the first game so terrifying no longer exist in this game.
- Technically and artistically the game didn't impress me. A lot of the later levels have the 'been there done that' feeling to them. Everything "feels" the same.
This is a game of expectations. If you were expecting the gameplay of Dark Descent then you will be disappointed. What you are playing this game for is the atmosphere, exploration and narrative, just don't expect anything more.
