I sat on the fence with this title for such a long time. I think it was due to Dead Island (I thought it was the same company who produced DL), as it ran like a dog with no legs. I just couldn’t play it due to the stutter problems on my system, despite the workarounds.

I had seen demos and play throughs on youtube so I knew it ‘looked stunning’ but did it play as well as it looked. Simply put, yes. For the first hour I was like OMG this is amazing, just trying to soak it all up. I was catapulted into MP with a bunch of mates, jumping from roof top to roof top just trying to avoid the carnage below. Burning cars and zombies clawing out at you in the streets.

I remember falling though a wooden roof on a slum building. The sound attracted a group of Virals, who are fast movers compared to the regular walkers. I got a bit of a kicking but managed to get out alive, such a buzz. It really makes you aware that your actions can affect the undead.

This game has to be the single best title for Zombie smashing, Left4dead 1+2 was good, very good infact. But this takes 4 player coop zombie hacking to different levels. You can play the coop campaign with up to 3 other players. The original game (you may as well buy the Enhanced edition), comprises of two large area maps ‘The Slums’ and then ‘Old Town’.

The DLC, ‘The Following’ introduces Vehicles to the mix…or a Vehicle, The Buggy. And of course a new map (unsure if there is more as haven’t completed it yet) more open so as to stretch the legs on the vehicle. This can be customised so you ultimately making it faster and more durable across the undulating terrain.

So have since started another character to do it at my own pace. I very rarely do , as I don’t really class myself as a completionist of games. However this game is so much fun I just keep coming back to it. One great aspect of the SP/MP is that you use the same character but whichever mode you play it uses the same character so development is consistent. So your game time will always attribute to your characters development. Which is good as you earn xp for completing missions or just generally killing, Parkouring your way around the map etc. There are numerous Easter eggs and developer Blueprints for some weapons.

The sound effects are brilliant, the ambient sounds as well as the moans and groans of the Infected. Love playing this game at night with my headphones on LOUD. Especially with the day and night cycle. As it gets a lot more intense at night, the introduction of a new creature into the fold and the average walkers become a lot more alert and dangerous. Earlier in the game (depending on the difficulty), the night is horrendous. As you progress through the game though you become more capable and attuned to it. I nearly forgot to mention the weather effects too, from fog to monsoon type rains with lightning thrown into the mix. Executed really well and adds to the level of immersion.

STORY
The story is cheesier than a Primula spread but hey, it doesn’t detract from the game. Some of the characters you really couldn’t care less about. As the production value is so good you just roll with it. See it as filler for the more glorious task of smashing up zombie hordes.

WEAPONS
During the actual game you can expect to wield a number of weapons. Some more useful the others, then you can craft and add buffs to weapons (I guess similar to Dead Island but way better). Axes, Knives, A piece of Pipe (told you some where crap) Swords, Shotguns, SMG, Assualt Rifle, Throwing stars etc. There are some other Traps etc which are within the maps themselves which you can interact with. You can change your clothing, you can even wear your national colours so you can look like a football yob and cave in heads just like you used to on the terraces back in the day!

It’s a cracking game, with stacks of fun and replayability, it must be if I have gone back to it time and time again.

A great, spiritual successor to the Dead Island series. Much improved on graphics, mechanics and playability. Storyline is short, but the sidequests, repeatable quests, and parkour challenges makes this game quite enjoyable. It's quite fun to play with others, however, it may take awhile for someone to join your game. Although playing against the Hunter is very hard, the gameplay is tolerable once skills are high and weapons are highest grade (orange). May remind you that parkour is the key to survival - will give you the urgency to climb and jump building to building in other, zombie apocalypse games.

Huh, didn't realize if you dropkicked a Zombie, you won't take damage, nor will any zombie think to try to eat you on the ground.
10/10 Would Dropkick zombie again

It's fun. Once you get used to the way you need to escape and evade, as well as conduct combat, its a zombie killing good time. I love the atmpsphere. I love the music, it's sort of Romero's Day of the Dead mixed with The Omega Man. The game itself reminds me sort of a morph between FarCry and Resident Evil. If you love Zombies, I give it a thumbs up. I'ts not perfect, but its a solid game.

Alright let me revise my review... this is basically Mirror's Edge on STEROIDS. This game is the ULTIMATE ZOMBIE POST APOCALYPTIC ACTION FREE RUNNER GAME OUT THERE PERIOD. With so much zombie games out there it is hard to keep something fresh after looking at the same crap over and over and over... not this game. It has RPG elements mixed in as well. Now, Imma get me some expansion

Really fun game to play co op with friends. Packed with content. The developers seem to care about the game, at least more than most AAA companies these days.

Short and sweet:

A little bit of something for everyone.

Pros
-Impressive enemy numbers on screen
-Guns and melee feel good each in their own right
-Skilltree helps you determine differing playstyles for players (stealth, crafting, combat)
-Night time presents on overarching emphasis of urgency in gameplay
-Hardcore players are rewarded extra exp for night time progress
-Combat is difficult which makes each encounter very tense
-Players can opt out of combat by focusing on movement
-Movement, attacks and manuevers all mesh very well
-Lots of creative set pieces
-Altitude feels apparent
-Graphics and style are above average
-Entirely soloable without feeling like the game was meant for more players (Same devs as Dead Island so I figured it was worth mentioning)
-Coop (Never tried)
-Play as Zombie (Never tried)
-30+ hours of content (You don't get bang for your buck like this anymore) I got impatient in the later half the game and started doing only main missions
-Satisfying story ending (So many games get this wrong I'm glad I can feel some closure in finishing a story)

Cons
-Combat is unforgiving and some setpieces have infinitely spawning enemies, game makes no indication to tell you when this happens
-UI is designed with consoles in mind
-Crafting is a pain when you want the benefits of buffs but don't want to hassle with the crafting menu or searching for resources all the time
-Story often falls flat and it's often difficult to care too much about the characters since they're mostly one dimensional and very predictable.
-Dying is easy if you don't take the game seriously, and if you die too much you will lose levels which are slow to rise.
This creates a good sense of tension but also means you can't experiment or mess around for fun without worrying about how much progress you could lose.

Neutral/Opinion
-Game is really creepy/scary at some portions, especially indoor sections where you get confined to a small area and get mobbed by zombies (this happens a lot and I was getting sick of it). In singleplayer this can start feeling very clausterphobic when you're surrounded and run out of stamina and are swinging for dear life. Consider more research if you think you might get spooked. Not the scariest game out there but it certainly manages to leave an impression.

In Closing
Honestly a couple design choices that don't jive with me as a player but the overall game is an easy 8.5 if not higher. Everything from mechanics, design, music is about as spot on as is it could be. Really think theres a bit of something for everybody here. If anyone is too scared to play the game alone they can just open up their lobby too.

Thanks for the great game Techland, hope to see more of this from you guys.

...over a year later, I have come back to this game; with a new rig and monitor. This beautiful world makes it easy to be immersed in, especially when you're too busy being mesmerized while looting things to notice that it's getting dark... and your ♥♥♥ doesn't remember how to use a map.

Noteworthy things:
-Excellent optimization- efficient use of your system's resources for both lower-end and higher-end computers for better gameplay and excellent graphics
-Parkour- adds a third dimension to the game; where you are constantly looking for cars or fences to jump/climb to escape the hordes or better position yourself to fighting them. Also makes looting fun, scattered around are building with parts that can be accessed only by running/climbing/jumping
-Sandbox- I dunno about ya'll, but I mess around between missions in games a lot, love that there's no timer forcing me out of my fun, but the story draws you back in should your ADD get too out of hand
-Loot- so much loooooot, you can find weapons, things to sell, and blueprints along with parts for weapon upgrades
-Multiplayer- up to 4 players co-op should you and your buddies crave some zombie slaying (also supports LAN)
-Music- sets the mood for butt-clenching the terror that ensues, though I don't remember any songs standing out for me
-Replayability- I'm back ♥♥♥♥♥es! I'mma keel you allllll MUHAHAHAHAHHH

Negative part of my review
-I didn't know about the DLC that came out in February. According to reviews, it adds new mechanics, an entire map, a dune buggy, new weapons, and a story to go with it all. Techland is a company that understands the difference between updates and DLCs

After burning out the Left 4 Dead games I was not interested in playing any other Zombie games, until Dying Light was released. This game has great visuals & a storline that wont let you sleep until you have finished "just one more mission".
