Major Bug Fixes + Extras

Hey all, this update addresses some huge problems with Showdowns, and adds some handy new features that many have requested. Thanks for being patient while I stamped out the bugs and made some new tweaks.

Here's what's been changed:

  • Showdowns work properly now! There were some problems I overlooked with the new way scoring was being calculated. Now match showdowns and Master of The House victories should be weighed against each other as originally intended.

  • New Camera Lock option for those who found the camera movement to be unsettling.

  • For Windows, you can now map the directional axes in Uncommon controller mode.

  • Slashing the Goo in Cemetery levels no longer stalls you like normal walls.

  • Moving Platforms move during level select again.

  • Player No. displays above pause menu.
Here's some other bug fixes:
  • Bug Fix for players getting a point for killing themselves after a sword clash
  • Fixed infinite falling corpses.
  • Fixed Crash if player picks up a head and lays down.
  • Alternate blood display mode if shaders are not supported by your system.

Bug Fixes and Adjustments 1/30/2015

Thanks to the feedback I got from tweets, emails, and from here on steam, I was able to whip up a patch that should address a couple dire bugs people encountered.
I also took the chance to polish some other corners of the game.

This patch includes the following:

  • Screen Scaling fix. Large window should no longer have tiny playable space.
  • 1v3 Team Battles fixed
  • Fixed crash bug with shooting bullets into the portal in Cemetery level "Crossing". Also, bullets now come out from the other side instead of just disappearing.
  • Fixed crazy slowdown in Fortress level "Sink".
  • 'Uncommon' gamepad setting fix.
  • Better feedback for hitting rocks.
  • 4 frame input buffer for sword strikes.
  • Control configuration names are saved and no longer default to 'arrows + poiu' etc.
  • Fixed pixel tearing above spawn points in some snow levels.
  • Fixed Player 4's kills/lives not showing up.
  • Fixed bodies vanishing when touching moving platforms.

If you encounter any weirdness yourself, feel free to email me at teknopants@gmail.com, tweet me @teknopants, or just shout really really loud so I can hear you no matter where you are.
Just kidding don't wake the neighbors.

Price seems a little steep for what you get, but I'd say its worth it. Great party game. Fast-paced with simple but tight controls. Super easy to pick up and play, and setting up multiple gamepads took half a second. I yell a lot when I play this game.

Quick to pick up and play. Very reaction based. Game has a very Samurai Champloo/Afro Samurai vibe (Samurai culture fused with hip-hop elements) People looking for a single player experience should look elsewhere, and there's no online multiplayer.

...But get some friends over to your place, and you'll have one of the most competitve and fun multiplayer games in recent memory. Lots of yelling and hype moments, especially in the game's "Showdown" tie-breaker finales if two players remain neck and neck throughout a match. Winning in this game makes you feel like a total G with all the split-second timing it requires. Certainly worth your time if you can manage to meet with friends in person to play.

FYI:
No Controller support for Mac, and if you try to use a program like Joystick Mapper, the game will crash before it can ever load.

100% Recommend this if you have gamepads (i'm using PS3's w/ MotionJoy on XBOX setting works perfect), HDMI cable, 3+ friends, and plenty of beer. This is my new party game, and I can see it hanging around for a long time.

Even of you have no friends and can't drink beer, it is worth it for the survival mode alone.

So much fun, but two major flaws: for a 15 dollar game, there just isn't really enough. It's AMAZING fun, don't get me wrong, but there's only so much you can do with two modes, the second of which at first glance isn't heavily different from the other (Versus and Survival). My other problem is that there's just not clear communication with some parts of the game - sometimes you'll win even if you have less than 10 kills, or a showdown will end and nothing will happen.

It's extremely solid as a game and I commend the focus on no-online cause it really does shine on couch versus, but there just isn't enough in this for a full price recommendation in my eyes.

Way too expensive for the little content it has and has been pretty much abandoned by the dev. He published only one patch since the game was released and is now working on a different game.

It's got really good gameplay but is not feature-complete. Here's a list of the stuff that should be in the game but somehow isn't:
- replays
- tournament mode in which you choose how many matches you want to play and the winner will be the one who wins the most. There could be some stats shown between each match. You could choose which levels you want to play or have the game randomise them.
- any match modifiers such as timed matches, no guns, no super jumps, etc.
- any kind of stats that carry over the matches
- unlockables/secrets
- an option to base spawning on the proximity of the enemy, so that you won't spawn near players and be able to instakill them just because you got lucky.

I can't recommend getting the game at it's basic price. It's really fun and has a great soundtrack but at the same time it feels like an early beta at this point. Wait for a sale (UPDATE: the dev didn't even bother putting it on Summer Sale). And get Towerfall Ascension in the meantime if you're looking for a good couch deathmatch game. It's a bit slower in terms of gameplay but at the same time it's superior in pretty much every way and is still getting new content and updates.

Playing Samurai Gunn for the first time may be the most fun I've had playing a multiplayer game. There's almost no learning curve at all and then it's just non-stop action, drama, conniving strategies, and a lot of yelling. The controls are simple to start out with, but open up to more complex gameplay as the subtle specifics of the mechanics reveal themselves. This game is hilarious and heart-pounding; one moment we were cracking up at the absurdity of it all, and the next we were literally on the edge of our seats. Only one of the three friends I played with would probably consider themselves a gamer, but we all enjoyed it equally. This game is for everyone.

Game is full of mystical sun honor. Its soul is essence of fun. True friendship is tested and turned into furious competitive rivalry. Death is waiting in every moment of space time continuum. Mind and body join in ultimate battle. Focus is key. Sluggishness shall be punished. Senses must be sharp like ancient watercrystal dragon blade of life. See bullet before bullet sees you. Don´t use weapon, become weapon. There is only forward. Free yourself from weakness. Clashing souls reveal truth. Freedom transcends eternity.

Silly competitive fighting game similar to that of say Towerfall. The pixel art style and movement is great. Definitely worth picking up if you usually have 3 friends hanging out and you all feel like battling.

Amazing multiplayer game. Sit down with a few friends and enjoy some great combat. Also has single player survival. 100% recommend a controller. Deceptively simple. Once you figure everything out, the versatility of the game opens up. Very tight controls.

This game is like Joust crossed with Samurai Showdown with added chaos. Controls are exceptionally tight and it's a joy to play. It's a bummer that this game is local-only, but I can't imagine how they'd deal with latency on a game like this. Absolutely worth getting a couple controllers and a few friends together to play this. Plus, Max Temkin is a dreamboat.

If you care about things in life like having fun you should probably play this game.

It's a party game that is made for both casual and hardcore gamers and it sorta eradicates both of those terms.

It's a simple, pick-up and play game and it will bring out the competitive side of all who play it.

A fun 4-player fighting game that isn't filled with nonesense and nintendo characters. Needs a patch or two but if you have your pc hooked up to a television and have four controllers ready, this is the most fun you'll have. Every kill makes you feel awesome and every death makes you curse up a storm.

One of the best local only combat games out there. So much fun to slice and shoot your friends or mess around with the AI. Everyone dies in one hit, so combat is fast and frantic, with timing becoming critical, if you swing early you leave yourself open, swing at the same time and you cancel the attack, swing late and you end up dead. The levels remind me of donkey kong and bomber man, along with some contra and legend of the ninja thrown in. The gameplay reminds me of Bushido Blade and Smash Bros. This game is excellent and a lot of fun, grab some controllers and friends. It features a single player bot too, but you are really going to want to play with somebody to enjoy it.

I don't understand why so many people love this game. It has a great artstyle, but gameplay wise it's nothing special. I admit the controls are well done, but that's it. If you don't have any people around you to play with this is just a waste of money.

Playing Survival adds nothing to the game because the AI just randomly jumps across the screen. Your enemies aren't intelligent, yes, they know when to attack, but they aren't challenging, just stupid.
Meh.

Amazing game. Spent hours and hours and hours playing this with people. It's probably one of the easiest pickup-'n-play fighting games on Windows and really gets everyone going. I definitely think this was my game of 2013. I've spent far more time playing it with guests than any other game I own since I bought it on Christmas.

Because there's absolutely no documentation, there's a lot of learning in terms of moves and rules. For instance, if you press your sword and jump and a direction at the same time, you do a mightier jump in that direction than normal. Also, you're limited to 3 bullets a life (gets rid of bullet sniping or camping), and you can hold down to play dead (you'll die in water if you do this). There are a bunch of stages all with their own little intricacies. If there's any game I'd recommend for party play on Steam, this is it.

I'm using Logitech F710 controllers because they have an amazing d-pad for this kinda stuff. Definitely something worth trying out if you're having issues w/ a 360 controller's analog stick. PlayStation controllers should work as well based on their d-pad positioning and functionality.

Based on what the game offers, I do think the price is high; although, that's not something I ever think about. Of the hundreds of games I purchased in 2013, it was by far the best and most-valuable.

I am really glad I got this one. It's fun, addictive and really easy to get into.

Samurai Gunn is an extremely fast-paced arena combat game in which players use a katana as their main weapon and may fire up to three shots from a gun as a support weapon. The gameplay relies on players' abilities to quickly move around the levels my means of running, jumping and executing their opponents in one lightning-fast strike. Shots from guns may be used to cover long distances in a straight line, but may also be deflected at the shooter by parrying them with one swing of the sword. Additionally, levels often include environmental hazards such as spikes and moving platforms which can squish any character against a wall, floor or ceiling.

An impressive amount of attention to detail is revealed through such things as bullet casings falling to the ground after each shot. What's more, the casings remain there and may be pushed by any character who steps on them. Another example is the water: if someone dies in a pond, the water acquires a red tint which becomes more intense as more blood is spilled, only to be washed away after a few seconds of no blood-spilling on the same spot. To top it all off, standing in water renders your gun useless even when when you get out of the pond, so keep that in mind.

The soundtrack is a perfect match for the action. Based on traditional Japanese instruments, it's reminiscent of soundtracks from chanbara movies and animes with a historical setting. At times, it reminds me of Samurai Spirits, only faster-paced (depending on the track). On that note, the sound effects are hugely satisfying. Most of all, the katanas cutting through the air (or your enemies, ideally). There's something about that loud metallic *schwing!* that makes you want to keep pressing the sword button for more, even if you're not hitting anyone.

Graphically, it's a beautiful game. The sprites are simple but perfectly distinguishable from one another and each is full of personality. There are three characters for each faction and, even within such simplicity, all of them can be told apart at a glance while keeping a common element that identifies them as belonging to the same group. The levels offer a rather wide variety of colours and designs. The intense lime green and clear brown of the bamboo forests, the purple rocks and pale green bushes of the mountain pass with its Buddha statues or the white snow, dark trees and clear water of the winter areas are all pleasant to look at and brimming with detail. Each gives the battle a particular mood or atmospheric feeling. And yet, they managed to do all this with no real distractions for the player, thanks to its retro-style pixellated graphics. Combining an old visual style with modern-day gameplay fluency is a path that numerous indie developres take, and it was yet again the right choice for this title.

All of it is wrapped up into an elegant presentation that fans of chanbara films and samurai pop culture in general will recognise and love. From the moment we see the title screen, we know what type of world we'll be thrown into. A red band with black silhouettes belonging to a bunch of samurais running through a field is an extremely effective introduction to a high-paced game such as this one and it also serves the purpose of creating a classy main menu. In-game, the brief stop produced by a kill, with the blackening of the screen save for the strip which shows killer and victim, is a charmingly abrupt way of making everyone aware of the death. The slow-motion plus zoom that frames the final kill in a fight always provides for an interesting composition and flaunts the game's colourful palette as well as its sprites, still lovely and worth of appreciation with their pixels brought to a bigger size. The menus are simple and use one font, and the signs which recount the kills at the end of a match have a neat parchment feel to them, with easily recognisable icons depicting each death and its cause.

I recommend obtaining this underappreciated gem while it's on sale, since playing it with friends is the best way to exploit its wonders. Survival mode is fun, engaging and addictive, but nothing beats the variety and unpredictability (or lack thereof) of playing against human competitors. As more people get this game, the more fun it will get for all of us who share it.
