Patch Notes for 1.22 (April 2014)

16 Aprile 2014

So we've been working on adding a new class and also fixing the problems people are having with firewalls and opening ports. The game will try to use Steam networking to go through firewalls when joining games through the server browser or when right clicking on a friend and selecting join game, if either the client or host are not using Steam the game will fall back to the old networking model.

Misc:

  • Added thief class
  • Changed the HUD
  • Added custom mouse cursor
  • Added click sound to buttons in the menu
  • Wizards flame spray now goes through enemies
  • Wizards ice nova no longer has a cast time
  • Wizard flame spray and meteor strike improved

Technical:
  • Now using Steam networking when possible
  • Tweaked game scale for certain resolutions
  • Enemies can now walk through each other when walking at different speeds
  • Strafing now properly netsynced
  • Fized freeze crash when failing to connect to a game

Editor features:
  • Added composite skills 'ground-hit', 'explode'
  • Added passive composite skills 'drop', 'retaliate', 'armor'
  • Custom buffs can now drain mana
  • Custom buffs can now heal enemies

Edit:
Just added a small fix for typing on Macs.

So, this game brings me back to Gauntlet II. Most. Epic. Game. EVER.

First of all let's talk about the classes: every type of character is particular.

Rangers: those rangers, man. Their sprite is too awesome, too. I didn't play the game to much but I still like them, their first spell especially, it reminds me of bomberman, an old game for C64.

Paladins: the paladin is the tank/support of the group, his engage/disengage (first spell) just helps out ALOT by helping other members to do DPS while he's taking everything. Usually I buy the +health thing from him, helps out alot when you must save the other member's boogie. ♥ They can do alot of DPS with their basic attack, though, so they DO damage.

Wizards: the mages. I mean, the mages. The class we fell love with in every RPG/MMORPG. I just love their fireball, so good. I like even the sprite of his robe and his staff/wand.

Warlocks: 2muchdmg4y'all. Seriously though, their damage is just INSANE as.. ♥. I mean, their first spell (the lighting bolt) when combined with the Nova "powerup" it's just too awesome.

Overall a great game (9/10), recommend to play this with gamepad.

***UPDATE:
Priest and Thief are now released:

Priest:
Ranged, AoE Auto-Attack = good for stacking combos
Mana Shield (Absorbs incoming dmg for mana cost)
Laser Beam (High Single Target Beam - Medium to Long Range)
AoE Draining Field (which drains enemy health to allies)
Cripple Aura (Halves the enemy dmg and reduces enemy movement speed)

Thief: (His attacks costs coins + mana, he has a passive chance to get coins from killed units, if killed with melee attack)
Melee, High DPS on a single target
Knife Fan (Good dmg in a small AoE infront of him - costs 6 coins)
Smoke Bomb (Stuns foes in an AoE - costs 12 coins)
Grapple Chain (shoots the chain to move quickly, enemeys he moved thru are getting stunned - costs 1 coin)
Frevor (Killing enemy units with melee attacks gives him bonus attack speed, stacks 4 times)

there are 6 classes in hammerwatch:
3 ranged (archer, mage and priest)
3 melee (pala, warlock and thief)
each of them has 3 active spells and a bunch of passive skills.
you unlock them as you move further in the story.
they are pretty well balanced (although archer seems little op to me, **UPDATE: got nerferd but still viable)
overall a good game, i recommend you to play with a controller, since its kinda hard to strafe and shot diagonal with a keyboard, its possible but not really comfortable.
highly recommended you to play with some friends, either local or online.
singleplayer can be little boring (although i finished it twice on singleplayer)

to the achievment-hunters:
perfect game is really hard to get, some achievments like the survival mode are ridiculous hard, but nice feeling after you were able to beat it.
took me around 55~ hours to 100%

If you're looking for a retro style, dungeon-crawler game with roguelike elements, then Hammerwatch is the game for you. Either solo or with a 2-4 member party you hack and slash your way through 4 unique acts which have levels (and bonus levels) within them. New enemies are progressively introduced as well as having a boss level at the end of each act. There are five character classes for you to choose from (Knight, Wizard, Ranger, Warlock and Thief) and each character has its own unique trait specific to its class.

With all of the above being said, the game can be quick to get repetitive unless you switch it up often with the characters and the pre-game options. (Such as, shared mana pools, no hp pick ups, no extra lives etc.) I found the game to be most fun when at its most challenging. However, even though the game is repetitive, you can definitely burn quite a good few hours with it: I've played around 60 hours and I still plan on playing more.

Another problem I encountered is more of a community issue. Unless you have friends who want to play with you already or if you happen to be lucky at a certain time of day, jumping into a random game doesn't often get you very far. People are quick to just kick you instantly - which once or twice isn't so bad but I've actually given up on playing the game completely on a number of occasions because everyone that was online just kicked me. However it's not all bad, as I have made quite a few good friends that I wouldn't have had before without this game.

I recommend this game to anyone wanting a fun dungeon-crawler to play that you can enable or disable the roguelike feature at will.
