Patch Notes for 1.22 (April 2014)

April 16th, 2014

So we've been working on adding a new class and also fixing the problems people are having with firewalls and opening ports. The game will try to use Steam networking to go through firewalls when joining games through the server browser or when right clicking on a friend and selecting join game, if either the client or host are not using Steam the game will fall back to the old networking model.

Misc:

  • Added thief class
  • Changed the HUD
  • Added custom mouse cursor
  • Added click sound to buttons in the menu
  • Wizards flame spray now goes through enemies
  • Wizards ice nova no longer has a cast time
  • Wizard flame spray and meteor strike improved

Technical:
  • Now using Steam networking when possible
  • Tweaked game scale for certain resolutions
  • Enemies can now walk through each other when walking at different speeds
  • Strafing now properly netsynced
  • Fized freeze crash when failing to connect to a game

Editor features:
  • Added composite skills 'ground-hit', 'explode'
  • Added passive composite skills 'drop', 'retaliate', 'armor'
  • Custom buffs can now drain mana
  • Custom buffs can now heal enemies

Edit:
Just added a small fix for typing on Macs.

Hammerwatch is definitely a game with a lot of effort and a lot of potential. From the comfortable pixel-art visuals, to the simple Gauntlet-style gameplay, I spent a good number of hours playing just through half of the game's basic campaign with a few friends and enjoyed it. Each choosable class feels different from one another, and as you progress, you can further your abilities to defeat swarms of tougher monsters. There's a few problems with the game, such as graphic bugs here and there, but they're few and far between. Top it off with a map editor that has as much potential as a set of dev tools, and Hammerwatch is definitely worth the $10.

This game is amazing, it brings me back to the old days of standing around a gauntlet machine with 3 friends hacking and slashing through monsters. This is essentially gauntlet, but a new school retro, and online.

I really, really, really want to thumbs up this game, but I can't. The game feels good, the atmosphere is there, but the game feels like its in early alpha. There is no ranom dungeon generation, seriously limiting replayability. This is partially made up for by the map editor, but it's just not enough. The character progression is too limited for a long playthrough and there is no inventory. I am open to the idea of innovation, an RPG without these elements, but it leaves the game bland. I wouldn't buy this game unless it's at least 75% off or there are some serious updates.

EDIT: I have finished this game; I played through it using the DRM free version from Humble Bundle.

Excellent Dungeon-Crawler style game. Fun to play individually or in a group. Updates seem to be pretty regular, and even the small changes keep it interesting. Highly recommend adding this game to your library, espeically since it's fairly cheap.

Would Buy Again!
9 out of 10, I'd give it a solid 10 if the levels were procedurally generated.
Anyway, I recommend this game for good solo and coop experience!
