Glory to Arstotzka

The communist state of Arstotzka has just ended a 6-year war with neighboring Kolechia and reclaimed its rightful half of the border town, Grestin.

Your job as immigration inspector is to control the flow of people entering the Arstotzkan side of Grestin from Kolechia. Among the throngs of immigrants and visitors looking for work are hidden smugglers, spies, and terrorists.

Using only the documents provided by travelers and the Ministry of Admission's primitive inspect, search, and fingerprint systems you must decide who can enter Arstotzka and who will be turned away or arrested.

A Questioning of Morals

A fantastic idea for a game that was beautifully executed. From the drab hue of colors and overwhelming sense of desolation of the immigration booth that is your life, you are doing much more than just stamping passports. It is an endless cycle of looking for mismatch information, but all the while there are bits of other information to keep your interest yearning for more story. The constant tug of morals is ever present in the game as people from war-torn countries tell their sob stories and you have your own family to worry about in the process. Will you accept that bribe so your son can get that medicine he so desperatley needs?

With so many choices and routes, the game offers 20 different endings, so the replay value is fantastic. For a mere 9.99, it is worth the purchase.

It definitely gets points for something new.
I never knew paper work could be so fun - if you're looking for a new style of game play, can stand to play non COD games, and this is on sale - purchase!

A wonderfully simple game focusing on the moral dilemmas seen at the border while a war is going on. You play as an immigration inspector whose job is simple, either deny or accept immigrants to the country based on what documents are presented and what the guidlines are. As the days continue, the rules change, either updating or by being removed, directly influenced by the events happening in the various countries. More and more people are seen who are directly affected (such as one man who has all his documents in order but his wife doesnt and are both at risk of dying in their home country). Do you follow the rules or do you follow your morals?

The game can be difficult as there are daily payments such as rent, heat, and food. You get paid for each correct admittance or denial. People will sometimes offer bribes at the risk of a citation. The first two citation have no real penalty, serving as warning. Every citation after costs credits. As more rules are presented, the process can take longer, leading to fewer credits being rewarded. The player has to find discrepancies between the documents presented and the applicant (such as height, weight, different looks, expiration dates, etc.). These descrpencies become more difficult later on (such as passport expiring during their stay in the country). The game has a max of 31 days if you get one of the final endings as well as an endless mode (unlocked after getting a code for getting a certain ending)

Music is there, just in the main menu and the endings. There are 20 endings, based on what you do during the days and who you let in and out as well as certain spoiler events later on.

Graphics are simple and get the job done. Nothing special, small amount of nudity once the body scans are unlocked to detect weapons and drugs.

At the time of writing, I'm in day 16 after getting one of the possible endings already, and I do feel like at least playing the game until the last day (day 30). I will update this review as I play more.
This is one of those unique indie games that surprise even old gamers like me. The game world is quite convincing, the gameplay is very different and, even though it feels a bit like work and a bit repetive at times, the game has a nice challenge that makes me want to see what's next, with different variations added every day.
It's also worth noting that the fact that you also need to earn money to survive and to feed everyone at home also makes you think about how you spend/make your money and have difficult moral choices.

Papers, Please is one of the best games I've ever played.
It makes me feel like everyone in Arstotska (A part of Soviet Russia) is counting on me to keep them safe.
You'll come across a couple of interesting characters during your time playing. Espically Jorji.
I've done at least 5 of the endings, and I want to do all 20. Yup. There's at least 20 endings to this game.
I'll always put this game in my Hall of Fame.

Now go and buy it. GLORY TO ARSTOTZKA!

Papers, please is, in my opinion one of the best examples of games as art. though the majority of the game play is doing the same thing multiple times in each level, the gameplay comes to life with the consequences of making a mistake. the consequences of your actions are what make this game as every decision and mistake you make have extrodinarily dark consequences as no matter what you do you are screwing over somobody's life, whether it be your family or some random person you encounter. highly recommended espectially for those who want a unique experience.

oh

Well anyway, basically, this game somehow turns a mundane job into a thing of pure interest. Instead of you waiting in a line, you are in charge of making the line go. You approve visas and deny problems. Sometimes you detain people at a press of a button. It's quite entertaining. While this all sounds rather boring and tedious, I often find myself drawn to the dystopian version of russia that is Aristotzka. Seeing all the strange politics go down and try so hard to earn barely decent pay to support your family as such is nothing more than an odd thrill. The rules constantly update and you need to learn how to adapt and identify without screwing up. or... well... that happens. You make both friends and enemies, both equally lovable. You talk with them and you make deals and you get help. Never forget that you are not alone in this Aristotzikan world.

oh, and do yourself a favor.

This game is amazing!
Entertaining. Challenging. Unusual.
For a week or two, my evenings were spent WORKING as a customs officer.
Even has a branching story line depending on the decisions the autonomy of your job allows.
I will never look at customs at the airport the same way again.
10/10 would recommend to anyone with an interest in games outside of popcorn-COD clones and a brain!
