Play Diablo 2 for years and years and years. [done]*
Play Diablo 3 for ~200h and dump it. [200 painful hours of shiny disappointment]
Play Path of Exile for years and years and years [to be achieved].
Yes, PoE has the nice dark touch I am looking for in a game like this (not the cartoonish bull$hit that is D3). There are numerous ingeniously designed areas such as the Mines in Act IV (how the pocket miners are excavated from the walls of the mine) or the The Ship Graveyard of Act I.
The Passive Skill Tree looks impressive but is kind of the same... Well, I still have to explore the full depth of the options presented by the tree. Skill reset points are earned by completing quests so you can do adjustments if required. I find this "freedom" to be nice and player-friendly.
In the game you level up gems which grant you with passives and active skills. This detour from the other systems is quite nice intro to the genre.
The game receives constant updates, new acts, mazes which is a guarantee that you can replay the game numerous times without getting bored. Since I've started following the game closely I haven't seen a single bad update. Just perfect.
Another impressive part of the game is the music - the soundtrack must be one of the best OST I've heard in a game and blends nicely to the gaming experience. Some of the tracks are mesmerizing, just turn on the volume and enjoy!

Most of all - the game is free. Download it, play it, enjoy it. There are cosmetic microtransactions present.

* I just had to say a word or two about D2 and D3 as I do consider Diablo 2 to be a classic in the genre (as Mozart is a classic in the musical genre). Diablo 3 is okish but only the Act V (which comes after purchasing the Reaper of Souls expansion) satisfies my taste. The hero leveling up system is without any depth and after one or 2 play-troughs the grinding losts all it's meaning.

My scores for the games:
D2: 10/10
D3: 5/10
PoE: 8.5/10

Why 8.5/10 - I do not like how certain items can be traded and how the trading system is implemented. I am reading in the official forums that the devs are working on the issues in the trading system and maybe soon we can enjoy something more structured. TBC

Learning the gem system is a little confusing and getting the right build takes a lot of work.. but the game has a lot to offer if you stick with it.

a real free to play game. money will buy you more convenience with trading and item-stashing, also gorgeous cosmetics for armour and skill-gfx but no gameplay advantages or shortcuts.

developers are dedicated and new content deployed frequently.

it is the most nuanced ARPG out there atm.

TL;DR SUMMARY: 70% modernised Diablo 2, 30% cool new ideas and improvements. A fun, very well-made classic hack'n'slash with good graphics (especially spell/skill effects), great sound and music, dark atmosphere and good story, as well as nicely designed and quite varied locations. Plus of course, the MASSIVE ability tree (which is surprisingly easy to navigate) and a ton of skills/spells to choose from with lots of ways to build your character that actually punishes inexperienced players much less than in most other games. Absolutely worth playing whether you're looking for a few dozen hours of fun or hardcore serious business online gaming, especially that for some reason this game is FREE TO PLAY (and the only purchasable items are cosmetics - lots of them - no pay to win whatsoever).

FULL REVIEW: Okay, so it seems most reviews for this game are either "my turtle left me" or 5000h played talking about how good the balance is on the endgame maps after you finish the Merciless difficulty, so this is the nub casual review for people who are bored and went "wat how is this f2p" like I did upon seeing this game.

As said above, this game is MASSIVELY inspired by Diablo 2 - similar dark and gloomy overall atmosphere (and a world - or rather region - which is so screwed they'd rather have an apocalypse), familiar-looking red and blue health and mana spheres, familiar-looking inventory that even includes the I/II weapon switching, familiar-looking scrolling dialogues, familiar-looking ability tr-NO WAIT HOLY ♥♥♥♥ HOW MASSIVE IS THIS THING THIS IS LIKE ONE MILLION ABILITIES

Path of Exile brings some really cool new ideas and improvements to the table - as justifiably praised in nearly every review out there, the passive ability tree here is ENORMOUS, but after the initial "mind blown" feeling, it's actually quite easy to navigate. It really is very open though, and although few of the passives make a significant impact on their own, in the long run it gives you lots of options to build your character. If you're just learning the game and making it up as you go, it's also pretty easy to change direction or even refund some points (as you get a refund point every once in a while) if you feel you're missing something, e.g. you've put too much focus into damage and now die too easily.

Staying on skills and character development, another change I really like are active skills - instead of being tied to your XP level, they come in gems that are placed in weapons/armour in coloured slots (corresponding to an attribute - strength/dexterity/intelligence), which again means that you can pretty much turn your build almost upside down if you want/need to. An awesome addition to that are "support" gems that can be linked to them, which allow for some incredible options and can turn a relatively unimpressive skill into a mind-exploding pocket armageddon. But then, the skills themselves are very diverse and they're mostly both really fun to use and actually useful - there really is something for everyone, and for pretty much any playstyle.

You have six although my ninja turtle buddies tell me something about a seventh classes to choose from - three with one primary attribute (Marauder - strength, Ranger - dexterity, Witch - intelligence), and three which are kind of "hybrid" (Duelist - strength/dexterity, Templar - strength/intelligence, Shadow - dexterity/intelligence). I have to complain about the character selection screen a bit, as the descriptions are not very helpful and a bit misleading if you're new - e.g. you can get the idea the Witch is something like a necromancer (which she can be), while she's pretty much the closest thing to a typical mage. In reality, with the way the ability tree and skills work in PoE, each class is very flexible and just knowing what attribute they're focused on gives you an idea what to expect and what playstyle they make sense with.

Another clever change, in my opinion, is... getting rid of gold. Yep, there's no gold here. The good old portal and identification (here named Scroll of Wisdom) scrolls are the most basic currency, plus a large variety of different "orbs" that can modify item properties - you can turn an ordinary sword into a Rare Uber Destruction Weapon of Doom and Annihilation. But wait, that doesn't mean getting your hands on powerful items is easy - you have more options to obtain the kind of equipment you want, but it's not easier, as obviously the more powerful orbs are just as rare (if not rarer) as rare items. And this system gets rid of "at first you can't afford to buy a dagger but if you do side quests then you can buy half the planet halfway into the game".

The graphics are very nice overall, might not be super-ultra-AAAA-HD-2017 standards, but the game just looks good and as a plus should run smoothly even on not the newest PCs. The combat really looks spectacular and what's very important - not messy and everything is mostly clear even when you're swarmed by enemies or fighting a boss who spams 10 different skills (and this is something that can make or break a game like this). The most disappointing part of graphics is probably... the character selection screen (yep, again), their models don't look very detailed and the first impression wasn't great, but when you get into the actual game, there really is nothing to complain about. The sound is also worth praising - sound effects are satisfying, voice acting is very good and gives personality to characters, and the soundtrack is great and very atmospheric.

I personally liked that while PoE does mostly stick to a similar dark and gloomy atmosphere and visuals as Diablo 2, the locations are much more diverse - e.g. some of the forest/jungle locations are actually quite colourful (does not mean they look friendly, though...), but then there are a few places in this game that make Diablo 2 look like My Little Pony. Lunaris Temple. Holy living ♥♥♥♥. Traumatic experience. Plus, the world is a bit more open and there are often several quests to do at the same time which you can complete in any order you like. There are also quite a few side locations, and you can encounter randomly generated "corrupted" areas (quite small with unusual monster types and a boss, plus skill gems you can't find elsewhere) and minor side quests from "masters" who can provide interesting upgrades if you have enough "favour" with them. A minor complaint about locations, though - they are sometimes really quite vast, which means that if you want to explore everything, a) you need to do it in one go as they're semi-randomly generated, b) there can be a lot of mundane running back and forth.

The story also deserves a mention - Path of Exile, instead of having just another "super evil demon dude who is evil because he's always been evil; oh wait did I mention evil", instead focuses on people with overblown egos and sick ambitions that get way out of hand. It may not be groundbreaking, but it's very cleverly written, in the way that if you don't care, it completely doesn't get in the way, but if you do, it's interesting and makes you want to keep going and kick the asses of those responsible for this. And there is an interesting plot twist or two...

So, is this game anything groundbreaking? Not at all. Is it fun to play? HELL YES. Admittedly, it never really gave me a "OMG WANT TO PLAY POE RIGHT NOW" feeling, but whenever I launched it, I usually ended up playing for 1-2 hours more than I'd planned. There will probably be a lot more hours than what you see above this review.

Path of Exile is one of those games that I really wish I would have put a lot more time into sooner. It is one of those rare free to play games that doesn't attempt to cram microtransactions down your throat at every turn. It is also rare in that character building is insanely in-depth. It is actually possible to get lost looking at the skill grid because of how huge it is, and it really leaves you with a great variety of different ways to build each character. Do you want to be a tank? A necromancer that can summon armies of undead? An archer that can fill the screen with arrows? You can do all of that and so much more.

A word of warning, however: This game is quite difficult if you are not a veteran of similar games. But if you can adapt to the learning curve, it is definitely a game that will reward you for your efforts and time spent.

Very good, but beware! This game is not n00b-friendly at all (things could do with a lot more explanation).

In PoE, you play an Exile who just landed on the coast of Wraeclast. From there, you will fight your way across the continent and find what's behind the corruption of the land. To do this, you use skill gems that you can socket into your equipment, different kinds of orbs that enchant your stuff and spend points in a massive passive skill tree. The skill tree in this game provides very few skills, because the majority is available as skill gems (that you can swap in/out at a moment's notice).

I didn't try to use the global chat (too noisy), so can't really tell if the online aspect is good or not.

This review will be based on my first impressions, I'll likely do another one further down the road.
Starting the game for the first time, controls felt a little clunky and the graphics looked like Steve Buscemi on a bad day.

That being said, 16 hours into this game (in two days, mind you) I can safely say that PoE is extremely enjoyable.
The community is probably one of the friendlier ones I've come across in any MMO/ multiplayer game, seems like everyone will offer advice and input.

Yes, building a character and understanding the game mechanics is a bit of a challenge and I still haven't fully grasped the idea.
If you're reading this and considering picking up the game, I highly recommend following a build or you will most likely be wasting your time.
The dev's have plenty of room for improvement but this is a beautiful game, definetly worth a shot.

Also, not P2W like every other MMO out there, which is refreshing.

Should be a new standard of Free to Play games.

+ good graphics
+ nice soundtrack
+ a long campaign
+ a huge amount of enemies, gems
+ crafting of weapons and armour

- servers are not 100% stable
- skill tree can be scary at first sight (however it is not so compex as it may seem)

Must try if you are a Diablo / Action RPG fan!

1400 hours and counting rng is a strange love i have not seen(luck) never 6l an item glad the have upped droprates though easy lvl 90 just stay away from lower global channels ya can run into cancer there..bad. All in all not a bad game, though i wish the skill tree was less its frigging huge go follow a guide or get lost in the tree trying to figure out things and uber fail first character or 6

1,300 hours in and Path of Exile is more addictive than it was at 500 and 1,000 hours. The more you understand the enormously complex mechanics in this game, the more open the sandbox feels. The skill ceiling in this game is very dependent upon knowledge (READ THE WIKI!!!) and much less so on mechanical play. A thoughtfully created build will trump someone with excellent mechanics anyday.

Prepare to drink from a firehose when you start learning what all this game can throw at you.
