Build of the Week S06E03: djnat's Mistress of Agony

Today we have released the third episode of season six of Build of the Week. This week's character is a level 93 Ascendant Scion that devastates enemies with powerful Damage over Time effects. This results in a less burst-damage-oriented build that may have a slightly slower clearspeed than others, but is extremely reliable and sustainable. It's an excellent choice for solo play. Check out the video here!

Path of Exile in 2016 holds up. At first I gave the game a postive for it's "simple start" I (and many others) called this game the Diablo III game that it should've been. Hence why i gave the game postive. However, as time went on, I felt Path of Exile didn't really phase me as much as it did back then. I believe the game needed some improvements to make the game better. Those did came, however it needed more so much more. Hence the downvote on my second take on the game.

Now we come to 2016. After a few years since its launch how does it hold up now? It holds up really well. The community and development team is really involve in making this game fun for the "vintage Diablo" fans who like the gritty and horror appeal.

Now things seem to be updated in terms of it's combat, magic and rouge gameplay. Daily activites, etc. My only issue is a real ironclad social venue of sorts. It's kind of there but it's a bit clunky and needs a bit of an improvement.

If you want a Free-to-Play game with a vintage Diablo apporach. I FULLY recommend this.

If I walked up to you on the street, slathered in mayonnaise and speckled with locusts, and told you I could give you a game that was like Diablo 2 but better - you would be listening.

If I dragged my bad leg as I clumsily walked away from you, dripping mayo and locusts on the ground behind me, you would follow. All the while, I'm whispering things under my breath - "deeper customization", "incredible build variety", "great loot system"...

If I dropped my tattered pants to my ankles, squatted down and began to pile excrement on the ground below me while singing "Use Somebody" by Kings of Leon, you would certainly be close to walking away. I mean, I am singing "Use Somebody".

My point is that even in such a bizarre situation, the promise of a game that is deeper, more rewarding, more varied and dare I say... more enjoyable than Diablo 2 is too tempting to pass up. No amount of mayonnaise, locust or feces will keep you from hearing more.

Now I did say free earlier, and that's because the game is free. You know, the other reason you had to follow me down that dark alleyway.

Get on with it? Okay, sorry, I will.

If you would go to such great lengths to hear more about this game, then why would you not just click download on Steam and give it a try. I guess that was my point all along. You have no reason not to download it and try. So just uhhh, finish that BLT you're eating. The one with the mayonnaise in it.

Yeah. Okay. Now go push download. Yep. Good job. Enjoy.

Hands down one of the best games I've ever played during my 15-year plus history of video games (~850 games owned) - definitely beats Diablo III, Grim Dawn, and all other this genre's games in my opinion. Those are for casual ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, this is the real ♥♥♥♥.

Path of Exile has an amazing atmosphere, really diverse enemies and maps, incredible amounts of depth and complex, the biggest talent tree I've seen in any game by far, and thousands of hours of content - all for free! Absolutely no real money required - only cosmetic items, more stash space (which there's enough already, mind you), and more character slots (default 24 - more than enough) can be bought using real money. And the game is so complicated that even after 100h+ of game time I'm still learning tons of new stuff all the time, and I believe I keep learning for the next 500 hours at least!

The devs are also god-tier (and by that I don't mean nonexistent, but ♥♥♥♥ing awesome), which is nowadays more important than ever. None of that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t early access, paid DLC, season passes, new sequels coming out each year (Call of Duty I'm watching you), or any other "modern" video game industry ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. The devs have listened to the playerbase since the very beginning of development, and made the game the way people want it to be. They still update the game very often, and it's not just bugfixes but a lot of new content. They've already released five DLC - which all are completely free, of course, adding hundreds of hours of content. I'm sick of these ♥♥♥♥ing ♥♥♥♥♥♥ developers like No Man's Sky's or ARK's, who don't listen to their players and release some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t DLC while the game is still in early access and they're just lazy little ♥♥♥♥s who don't even develop the game anymore or fix the horrible optimization or bugs, and treat the playerbase like ♥♥♥♥. PoE's developers are on a completely different level - perfect opposite of those piece of ♥♥♥♥ developers that nowadays exist way too much.

This game should be on "most played" or "top seller" list - not some ♥♥♥♥♥♥ ARK's DLC. ♥♥♥♥ ARK, ♥♥♥♥ its developers. This is 100% honest an awesome game with awesome devs, and I was more than happy to support the developers by buying some cosmetic stuff with real money. Keep up the good work! This is what modern video game industry should be like!

Ive been playing this game since it was first conceived over 7 years ago. well over 2000 hours before steam, It is a beautiful game that blizzard wished they could have developed. Its got a splash of everything great, little issues and most of all the content updates are out of this world. I would glady pay 60$ for this game rather than D3, I want this game to have my babies.

11/10 would unplug granny for more support packs.

I don't know what Blizzard is doing or why are their heads so far up their behind, but Path of Exile is what we expected from Diablo 3 when we were waiting for it and as time went on, Diablo 3 only got worse and worse, simpler and dumber.

On the other hand it seems like with every patch, league and DLC, Path of Exile becomes a better and more mature game. It is precisely crafted for the people who love ARPGs and aren't afraid to dive deep.

It has everything you loved in Diablo 2 and sooo much more. The biggest downsides in PoE are probably the massive learning curve and the fact gameplay feels very slow and clunky in the beginning, a big reason why many people quit before they even understand it. Once you break through this entrance barrier, you can say goodbye to your social life.

Top DH in D3 Ladder and yet after trying PoE once I completetly stopped playing D3.

PoE offers so much more with the most amazing Dev team working on it.

Can only recommend.

Like Diablo II? Then get this. Didn't? Then try it anyway - for the extremely reasonable price of zero bucks you get one of the best games in the genre (the microtransactions are cosmetic or stash space, no P2W here). Highly recommended

Path of Exile is one of those games that has a good f2p model, however if it weren't for the fact that it's free I couldn't really give this game a positive rating.

Good:
-Absolutely ZERO pay-to-win aspects in this game.
-Ridiculous amount of content.
-Fairly solid amount of build variety.
-Good optimization for people with bad rigs.

Bad:
-While there IS build variety to do well you will end up just stacking to use one specific ability, and ONLY that specific ability, this makes PoE get boring pretty quickly.
-Many builds, while possible, end up being trash and hit a wall where that build just can't proceed any further; nearly all tanky builds do this.
-Making a bad build pretty much ♥♥♥♥s you for life. There is extremely little potential to re-spec your skill points and as a result if you make a build that ends up not working (see tanky builds), even if you don't realize it's bad until hours into the game, well, you get to just restart the entire game on a new character.

Toss-Up, some people may like/dislike these things:
-Currency isn't the standard gold, currency is more of an opinion in this game, all trade is done by bartering items.
-While this game calls itself an "mmo" it is certainly not, unless you specifically go out of your way to allow players to interact with your world you will only encounter other players in town and in chat.
-When playing with others loot is not pre-determined; if something drops on the ground ALL players have the ability to pick up that item as soon as it drops and screw the other players.

The good outweigh the bad certainly for the average player, but honestly this game needs some better balancing to hold MY attention, I need to do more than follow a guide online and spam one spell over and over again to have fun.

terrible repetitive game, lots of grinding and drops that are wothless, lots of rubbish items in game that only fill inventory so you will purchase more slots. It seems good for a while but high level are annoying and slow going, the trading is time consuming and annoying. This game is only good for people who have tonnes of time to waste on it collect currency to buy good items.

I'm not entertained by this one. I can see the appeal for it, but as far as APRGs go, there's way better options. The game is complicated for the sake of being complicated. Between the "currency" system and the excessive skill tree, the game becomes tedious.

The skill gems are a neat idea, but it also forces you to play a boring character before you can even start to build something slightly interesting (you gotta collect the gems you need first).

The killing blow is the internet connection requirement. Sure, it's a free-to-play game (done well, even) but you're at the whims of your connections and their servers at all times. The game doesn't do well with any sort of latency due to the lack of solid client-side-prediction.

If you want an okay ARPG experience for free, this is it... if you want a good ARPG experience, look elsewhere (and spend some money).

I would recommend this game, but there are things that I like and hate about it. The things I like is that it is a fun hack and slash online RPG game, and my friend and I have hundreds of hours on record (more than Steam shows because I found the game updates better with the real launcher instead of using Steam's crappy one). So for that, the game is awesome! It has too many good features to name, so instead I'll focus on the cons and what annoys me, and you can read another review on here for why people love the game.

CONs:

1. The Gems and skill tree are confusing to use. Don't get me wrong, a beginner can pick the game up pretty fast and you'll understand how to use them. HOWEVER, by the time you actually start to understand how everything works you will realize your build is completely jacked up and you are useless. As a result, you'll either need some advanced foresight on how to build your character, or follow a guide to create an effective build. This links into the next con.

2. Strategy is a bit difficult in this game. In an FPS if a team member is lagging behind and you are losing a game, you can make up for it with pure player skill and a bit of strategy. I've played other games like Phantasy Star Online 2 or Defiance, where even if your level was quite low you could make up for it with strategy and team work. Not so much the case with PoE. If your build is bad and you don't have the right Gems, you are pretty much screwed. The only way to win is by dying and respawning your way to victory. This links into my next problem.

3. Your builds have to be VERY specific. Yes, they have LOTS AN LOTS AND LOTS of Gems and skill tree options, but there are only a few viable choices you can make that will create a functioning build that actually works to keep you alive. This goes back to point 1. Essentially, there are a group of Gem combinations no one uses because it creates a useless weak build. Going into the game you won't realize this so you will make a fun cool build, only to realize you will keep dying.

The stat system is also a bit confusing and isn't really explained in the game when it comes to Rings, Necklaces, elemental resistance, Evasion, Armor and magic shield. You either learn by trial and error, or again, using a guide. By the time you realize how all of this works to create an effective build, you will need to either re-stat your character or build a new one. For me this was frustrating because I don't really like building multiple characters. I like to create one and be done, and it was frustrating that the "Fun" build I created was useless and weak because the Gem combination wasn't really functional for the game's design.

4. A lot of chaos on the screen, not a lot of tactics. Most of the time there will be a lot of blood, gore, explosions and mindless hacking and slashing. If you are like me and grew up with games like Baldur's Gate, the Final Fantasy series, Jagged Alliance, X-Com, or even more recent games like Mabinogi (that used a rock paper scissors style combat system), or Dungeons And Dragons Online, you will enjoy a more strategic type of gameplay with lots of teamwork. PoE doesn't really offer that in my opinion to allow you to plan tactically and strategically in the way that I would like. The main problem is that when the battle starts, as named above there is a lot of chaos. So any plans you made pretty much reverts to Leroy Jenkins style Yolo gameplay.

I never played much of Diablo so I can't say if this is similar, but for me I don't really like the way the stat system and Gem system works.... REGARDLESS of all those "negative" flaws, I have put about 300 hours into this game and I used to play it often. So if all of my above "Cons" seem pointless and trivial to you, then go play the game because I'm sure you'll love. I don't necessarily think the above problems ruins the game, it is just that it isn't explained very clearly for beginners to create a functioning build the first several times around without using a guide. And since I grew up with Dungeons And Dragons style games, I'm used to a system where you make a functioning hero the first time around and just stick with them.

Anyways, stop reading this and go play some games. :3
