About This Game

You are an Exile, struggling to survive on the dark continent of Wraeclast, as you fight to earn power that will allow you to exact your revenge against those who wronged you. Created by hardcore gamers, Path of Exile is an online Action RPG set in a dark fantasy world. With a focus on visceral action combat, powerful items and deep character customization, Path of Exile is completely free and will never be pay-to-win.

Key Features

  • Freedom. Power. Revenge.
Banished for your misdeeds to the dark, brutal world of Wraeclast, you play as the Duelist, Witch, Ranger, Templar, Marauder, Shadow or the Scion class. From forsaken shores through to the ruined city of Sarn, explore Wraeclast and uncover the ancient secrets waiting for you.
  • Unlimited Character Customization
Create and customize hundreds of unique skill combinations from tradable itemized gems and our gigantic passive skill tree. Combine skill gems, support gems and trigger gems to create your own unique combination of power, defense and destruction.
  • Deadly Missions
The Forsaken Masters each have their own style of mission and each of these missions has many variations. As you explore deeper into Wraeclast, the pool of available variations increases to challenge you in new ways. All of the Missions and their variations can occur anywhere in the game, including within end-game Maps.
  • Dressed to Kill
Path of Exile is all about items. Find, collect and trade magic, rare and unique items with arcane properties, then customize your character build around the deadliest combinations you possess.
  • Brutal Competitive Play
Battle in PvP tournaments seasons and Capture the Flag events for worldwide recognition. Compete in Daily Leagues and Race Events that run as separate game worlds with their own ladders and economies to win valuable prizes.
  • Customise Your Hideout
In their extensive travels throughout Wraeclast, the Forsaken Masters have discovered ideal locations for an Exile to use as their own secret Hideout. Once you've earned a Master's trust, you may be taken to a Hideout, where you can create your own personalised town. Masters residing in your Hideout offer you daily Missions and train you in advanced crafting options. Play Diablo 2 for years and years and years. [done]*
Play Diablo 3 for ~200h and dump it. [200 painful hours of shiny disappointment]
Play Path of Exile for years and years and years [to be achieved].
Yes, PoE has the nice dark touch I am looking for in a game like this (not the cartoonish bull$hit that is D3). There are numerous ingeniously designed areas such as the Mines in Act IV (how the pocket miners are excavated from the walls of the mine) or the The Ship Graveyard of Act I.
The Passive Skill Tree looks impressive but is kind of the same... Well, I still have to explore the full depth of the options presented by the tree. Skill reset points are earned by completing quests so you can do adjustments if required. I find this "freedom" to be nice and player-friendly.
In the game you level up gems which grant you with passives and active skills. This detour from the other systems is quite nice intro to the genre.
The game receives constant updates, new acts, mazes which is a guarantee that you can replay the game numerous times without getting bored. Since I've started following the game closely I haven't seen a single bad update. Just perfect.
Another impressive part of the game is the music - the soundtrack must be one of the best OST I've heard in a game and blends nicely to the gaming experience. Some of the tracks are mesmerizing, just turn on the volume and enjoy!

Most of all - the game is free. Download it, play it, enjoy it. There are cosmetic microtransactions present.

* I just had to say a word or two about D2 and D3 as I do consider Diablo 2 to be a classic in the genre (as Mozart is a classic in the musical genre). Diablo 3 is okish but only the Act V (which comes after purchasing the Reaper of Souls expansion) satisfies my taste. The hero leveling up system is without any depth and after one or 2 play-troughs the grinding losts all it's meaning.

My scores for the games:
D2: 10/10
D3: 5/10
PoE: 8.5/10

Why 8.5/10 - I do not like how certain items can be traded and how the trading system is implemented. I am reading in the official forums that the devs are working on the issues in the trading system and maybe soon we can enjoy something more structured. TBC

Learning the gem system is a little confusing and getting the right build takes a lot of work.. but the game has a lot to offer if you stick with it.

Path of Exile is one of those games that I really wish I would have put a lot more time into sooner. It is one of those rare free to play games that doesn't attempt to cram microtransactions down your throat at every turn. It is also rare in that character building is insanely in-depth. It is actually possible to get lost looking at the skill grid because of how huge it is, and it really leaves you with a great variety of different ways to build each character. Do you want to be a tank? A necromancer that can summon armies of undead? An archer that can fill the screen with arrows? You can do all of that and so much more.

A word of warning, however: This game is quite difficult if you are not a veteran of similar games. But if you can adapt to the learning curve, it is definitely a game that will reward you for your efforts and time spent.

Can't recommend even after 300 hours as the servers are next to garbage and I have RIP'd to connection issues more than I've died due to making an error. Game is 10/10 no doubt but I don't feel like losing a character because the servers are trash. Sorry GGG I love your game but can't play it anymore.

PoE was my favorite as soon as I saw it in 2013, and when I saw that it's available on Steam, I just had to play it again and see what's new. As far as I can tell, all my favourite elements stayed the same, the slots, the crazy skill-tree, etc - big kudos to developers! - and the only frustrating thing about this game - the barter system - also stayed the same, urgh.

I basically stopped playing when I realized I had to communicate with other players on some external forums, in order to trade fairly. And the trade system with vendors - it's okay, you just have to name it 'crafting' in your head, not 'trade'. If you see it that way, part of frustration dissipates. As in any other game, you have to gather a number of crafting materials, to combine them into another number of crafting materials, or an augumentation, or a better potion, etc. But still, my heartfelt wish is for common currency, even if it goes against the unique athmosphere, or whatever...

Common currency, people. There was a reason it was invented early in our real world. The exiles need this convenient feature too. (yes, I know the developers are not going to do it, sigh)

Ok, play this game. It's awesome.

Gets boring Fast.
Lag spikes at times and loosing a character because of a sudden spike lag sucks.
Did i mention that it gets boring already ?
Boss fights are even more laggy and they one shot you when that lag comes and it will come.

Nice skill tree and the ability to choose your path.
Plenty of forum guides.
Developers suck bad and at last update everyone was unable to play except streamers.

Graphics are great, the story line always keeps you wondering what happens next. Think of it as Diablo, except not as great. You somehow stumbled upon this free game and I'm here you to ask you.. are you undecided ? Well, let me tell you this is a great game and definitely worth getting to kill time... and when I say kill time I mean kill A LOT of time. I've already spent 21 f'n hours and I'm barely level 34, I heard the max is 80, I'm not sure, but when I get there, hopefully next year, i'll edit this review and spoil the rest for you. Also, for starters like myelf, little advice. KILL EVERYTHING, I ♥♥♥♥ you not.. KILL EVERYTHING that you encounter, because quest don't give you any XP, that's right; only killing monters/npcs will give you XP, who came up with the idea of not giving XP when you finish a quest. So get ready for the grind of your life, becaue if you think that getting Invincible Reins from Lich King is grinding, you haven't truly faced it. I guess that's my only problem with this game, maybe the veterans enjoy it that way, but I'm very used to getting my XP when I finish a quest. Overall, is a great time. Yes, get it..
