About This Game

Hell is an experiment you can't survive in Outlast, a first-person survival horror game developed by veterans of some of the biggest game franchises in history. As investigative journalist Miles Upshur, explore Mount Massive Asylum and try to survive long enough to discover its terrible secret... if you dare.

Synopsis:

In the remote mountains of Colorado, horrors wait inside Mount Massive Asylum. A long-abandoned home for the mentally ill, recently re-opened by the “research and charity” branch of the transnational Murkoff Corporation, the asylum has been operating in strict secrecy… until now.

Acting on a tip from an anonymous source, independent journalist Miles Upshur breaks into the facility, and what he discovers walks a terrifying line between science and religion, nature and something else entirely. Once inside, his only hope of escape lies with the terrible truth at the heart of Mount Massive.

Outlast is a true survival horror experience which aims to show that the most terrifying monsters of all come from the human mind.

Features:

  • True Survival Horror Experience: You are no fighter - if you want to survive the horrors of the asylum, your only chance is to run... or hide
  • Immersive Graphics: AAA-quality graphics give players a detailed, terrifying world to explore
  • Hide and Sneak: Stealth-based gameplay, with parkour-inspired platforming elements
  • Unpredictable Enemies: Players cannot know when - and from where - one of the asylum’s terrifying inhabitants will finally catch up to them
  • Real Horror: Outlast’s setting and characters are inspired by real asylums and cases of criminal insanity

Warning:

Outlast contains intense violence, gore, graphic sexual content, and strong language. Please enjoy.

I had been wantin to play this one for so long, so when it went on sale I couldn't resist.

Absolutely loved it. I'm not going to compare it to other games, because I feel that takes away so much from something. But it managed to have me jumpy and on edge, even jumping out of my chair at some points. Trust me; that's saying something.

I bought the DLC immediately after beating it, and can't wait for the fun to continue.

Good game. I can say this is the best horror game I've played.

The camera is perfect for making it even more scary. Like,
when you're in the dark and need to turn on your camera but the camera only has a small range of sight, and because of that your vision is very minimal. Sooo, IF you suddenly see something you wouldn't expect, you will shriek (I did atleast) and crap your pants without a doubt.

I also really loved the environment. The game looks very appealing imo and I really liked the ocassion.

My ONLY thing is that I didn't like the fact that everytime you come somewhere there is a figure just like the figure before that one with a stick or knife and you have to run away or hide. They shouldn't have put this aspect of the game so many times in it. They could have come up with an other kind of objective rather than running away from the same looking guy with a stick in his hands.

Enough complaining, because this game was even with this little flaw beyond amazing! I would definitely recommend it if you like a good horror!

Back a few years ago, my dad bought me this game for my birthday. Now, to begin, im not a horror gamer. That was the problem when i first started playing this game. I wanted to tough it out, show my brother that im not a little ♥♥♥♥♥, so for a few weeks, i tried. I tried and tried. Then, i put it down for a few months out of frustration and anger towards the fact that i get scared WAY too easily. However, my dad died a few months ago, and after a while, i picked up this game again. I have vowed to beat this game [even though im very late to the party] and tough out the [incredibly horrifying] level and character desgin.

If you think you're strong enough, get this game. It's a good play on rainy nights.

After several hours loving this game I decided to write down my personal thoughts about it.

After installing Outlast and pressing the "NEW GAME" button the next few hours will be pure horror.

Staying in front of "Mount Massive Asylum" is just WOW! You know that mood shortly before it begins to rain? Lighting flashes soft thunder sound mixed with a nice sunset and an old lantern waving in the wind. Controls are easy going and intuitive. Mount Massive asylum is huge. You visit several areas of the asylum where some can be a true pain in the ♥♥♥ when you run out of batteries. Oh yeah you are equipped with a camcorder that you can proof what you experience in Mount Massive. Every time you use "night shot" it is consuming battery power. The "night shot" replaces the flashlight in the game.

I noticed weather changes during play through - so later in the game it rains cats and dogs. I loved the sometimes slow pace of the game with lot of hiding in the dark e.g. where you have to get the three fuses - but maybe that´s just me TYLER :) There are fast paced parts alike where you have to run like hell to escape some baddies who just want one thing - hunt you down! You quickly realize that you are the prey in this game - at the latest when you lose some fingers...

All in all the reason I played OUTLAST again and again was the cool asylum setting. If you´re a fan of movies like "Grave Encounters" this game could be right for you since Unreal Engine 3.5 does a great job offering you Mount Massive Asylum as a playground. I can nothing but recommend Outlast as it is a great thrillride through an typically 1950´s asylum.

This Game, if you can even call it that, has scarred me for life. The combination of music and graphics is just insane. In my opinion it is worse than watching Jaws at age 2 with John Williams at the helm. Playing it in the middle of the day was the only choice for me. I had people around me the entire time so I can not say I experienced it at its best. It kept my heart pounding and I kept looking past my monitors and down the hall the entire time. When you can not walk thru your own home without feeling afraid then the programmers did a great job. I would love to shake all of their hands and slap them at the same time. I recommend this game 100% and then some. Please buy it and try it for 20 minutes at least. It does not get easier, it never lets you relax and it certainly will not let you sleep again. Absolutely love it! Bought the DLC right after finishing it and I am not sure my heart can take playing it now. Good luck....

Reasons to play this game:

1. You can see your own ♥♥♥♥ in the DLC

10/10 would wack again!

No OK for real now. Reminder tho: this is more like a personal experience than a decent review. I start with an unimportant intro, followed by a complete ♥♥♥♥♥torm of words about my own experience with the game, but at the end I sum up some pros and cons. So if you’re not really into reading a lot of unimportant but straight-out-of-the-heart commentary, you can directly scroll down to the summary.

I bought Outlast during the Steam sales last October (Halloween and stuff) and I was so excited to play the game, just because of the trailer. So when I finally jumped into it - together with a friend sitting next to me ofc - I was very excited and curious. Sadly, after the 2nd jump scare (no spoilers, there is more than one jump scare in the game) my friend and I screamed like two little ♥♥♥♥♥es and I turned off the game, without playing it for a couple of months.
After a few months, I restarted, accompanied with two more friends, hoping we would outlast a bit longer, but now I got stuck in the 1st "hide mission", you know, those objectives when you need to sneak around without getting detected or else your head will be ripped off.. So yeah, I had a bad start playing this game. BUT: one summer day, in my attic during a great storm, I finally found the man - or woman, no sexist here - in myself and completed Outlast in just a few hours.

The thing I loved the most about Outlast was its ambience. Sure, there are a bunch of jump scares and all that, but what made the horror in this piece of art was for me everything else: the environment, the music, the NPC's, but let’s start with the gameplay. I got used to playing “the vulnerable victim who can't fight back"-thing, since I played Slender and Amnesia and all that, but this game took it to a whole new level. First of all: THE ♥♥♥♥ING HANDCAMERA! It's such an amazing idea, and was executed very well. (NOTE: remember to put on your camera after a cut scene, because sometimes that doesn't happen automatically and then you forget recording and the game won't add notes to your journal.) Second: the parkour. Although sometimes a bit unrealistic ("Oh no, I'm followed by murderers, let me just wrench myself between these racks and they'll stop following me") it was really amazing to know that you have a force - your agility - to outsmart your pursuers. Technically, it also worked very smoothly. I don't have a gaming laptop, so I couldn't play it on high settings - which I recommend, ambient feeling, y'know - but it almost never lagged or glitched or whatever. As said, the true horror of Outlast isn't in the jump scares, but in things like the environment. I remember myself thinking "Oh really, an asylum? How original", but boy oh boy original it was.
!!!MINOR SPOILER ALERT!!!
Although it all started very cliché, with the crazy people and stuff, you'll learn after a while that there is something MORE to it, and with more I mean supernatural... That's what I actually kinda disliked about the game, since I am not a big fan of supernatural stuff
ENDING OF SPOILER ALERT
But then again, how amazing is a game when you get to love it, even though you're not a fan of the storyline?

I also deeply recommend playing The Whistleblower DLC since it gives a lot more information about the storyline, which is a bit unclear after completing the normal game.

To sum up (for all the lazy people who did not read my interesting opinion)

PRO:
- the gameplay (camera, parkour, hide and sneak)
- the music
- the NPC's (they are REALLY ♥♥♥♥ed up, I can tell you that. They are also very memorable. There won’t pass a day without you thinking about Chris Walker, Trager, Wernicke and – ofc – Eddie “The Groom” Gluskin. They were given so much personality! )
- the ambience and environment (especially the truly disgusting parts, they make Outlast Outlast)

CON:
- the unrealistic aspect of pursuers stopping to pursue you after you wrench yourself between racks
- the story (my humble opinion, one of the main aspects of the story is something I don't like)
- THE MOANING!!! For real, let me explain this quickly. Although it adds a lot of tension, hearing your character moan and his breath trembling, it got kind of annoying after a few hours. On the bright side, the game doesn't take more than a few hours, so that's fine.

I can't wait for Outlast 2 hihi #shamelessfanboy

I have to admit, I've been avoiding horror games for years because I hate being anguished and I hate even more being in panic. Or at least I thought I hate. Now that I've finally played and finished three of the most talked-about and critically acclaimed modern horror games (SOMA, Alien: Isolation and now this), I have to say: wow, just wow. Newsflash: the relief after you've avoided monsters by hiding, sneaking, running, et cetera – it's just awesome. But it's not the only reason I've been enjoying these rides.

SOMA was thought-provoking and philosophical. Alien: Isolation was a roller coaster, absolutely nothing interesting in its story but it surely was entertaining and scary ride. Outlast, on the other hand, is just plain crazy, but in a good way. Outlast reminds me of good old DOS gems like Sanitarium, Countdown and Harvester. Especially Harvester. For some reason, I find sick, weird, offensive and brutal themes intriguing. (For my defense, I also like colourful family games.) And I'm not just talking about the violence and gore, although the violence is at the heart of everything in these kind of games. But I'm talking about having balls, boldly crossing the boundaries of good taste and being cruel and offensive. In some ways, Outlast has fulfilled my yearning for another Harvester with its phantasmal madness or another Postal 2 with its dark humour.

Of these three recently conquered games, I think Outlast is easily the best, even though I'd give perfect score for SOMA too. Outlast is probably also the scariest game I've ever played, not (just) because of the monsters and environments, but because of the run for your life sequences. There's a lot of jump scares too, and while a jump scare is a somewhat cheap technique, it does work as intended and it's nicely executed for the most part. I didn't scream like those annoying hyperactive extrovert YouTubers, but the stinky mole might've taken a peek every now and then.

"Outlast contains intense violence, gore, graphic sexual content, and strong language. Please enjoy." 5/5
