About This Game

Hell is an experiment you can't survive in Outlast, a first-person survival horror game developed by veterans of some of the biggest game franchises in history. As investigative journalist Miles Upshur, explore Mount Massive Asylum and try to survive long enough to discover its terrible secret... if you dare.

Synopsis:

In the remote mountains of Colorado, horrors wait inside Mount Massive Asylum. A long-abandoned home for the mentally ill, recently re-opened by the “research and charity” branch of the transnational Murkoff Corporation, the asylum has been operating in strict secrecy… until now.

Acting on a tip from an anonymous source, independent journalist Miles Upshur breaks into the facility, and what he discovers walks a terrifying line between science and religion, nature and something else entirely. Once inside, his only hope of escape lies with the terrible truth at the heart of Mount Massive.

Outlast is a true survival horror experience which aims to show that the most terrifying monsters of all come from the human mind.

Features:

  • True Survival Horror Experience: You are no fighter - if you want to survive the horrors of the asylum, your only chance is to run... or hide
  • Immersive Graphics: AAA-quality graphics give players a detailed, terrifying world to explore
  • Hide and Sneak: Stealth-based gameplay, with parkour-inspired platforming elements
  • Unpredictable Enemies: Players cannot know when - and from where - one of the asylum’s terrifying inhabitants will finally catch up to them
  • Real Horror: Outlast’s setting and characters are inspired by real asylums and cases of criminal insanity

Warning:

Outlast contains intense violence, gore, graphic sexual content, and strong language. Please enjoy.

Ok I am still not able to finish the game.... Simply because it's way to scary to play more than 10 minutes, for the people who never played the game: 10 minutes = 5 heart attacks and 10 loud screams.

I'm going to finish the game soon! Well yeah I hope so...

Oh no I just realise that I bought the DLC :O

10/10 best horror game I ever played!

DISCLAIMER: You will be traumatised and you will never dare to come in an abandoned Asylum or hospital again.

This is one of the best modern horror games out there that actually scared me without the cheap usage of screamers. The only real complaint I have is that the gameplay itself is not very varied and it makes the game less scary as you progress. It should have had more varied gameplay instead of adding gameplay variation until the "whistleblower" DLC. The AI is very formulaic and every bad guy is prettymuch the same with diffrent skin textures plastered on. With a bit of courage you can actually learn how to mess with the enemy walkpath and line of sight to beat the game in no time and with no effort. This game rely's on you being afraid to create atmosphere and adrenaline pumping gameplay, but I was laughing more at the endgame enemies rather that running away from them, thus breaking mygame immersion. Still reccomend to average gamers that intend to be scared, but veteren gamers to survival horror games might get a bit bored.

If you have intestinal obstruction, this game is your cure! But keep extra underpants with you while playing this game!

Do not think that this is an ordinary first-person-shooting game! This is a creepy firt-person-survival game with no guns! Yes! You have no guns, no ammos, no ****! All you have is a battery-eater camera /w NV.

If you're a fan of horror games and movies, this one is the best. Because it's the most realistic horror game you can ever play!

Never understood people who write tons of text to express simple things.

You should know only one thing about this game.

It's spooky.

And I mean: spooky walls, spooky sounds, spooky enemies, spooky ugly mugs of those enemies, spooky darkness, spooky doors, spooky valves, spooky windows, spooky beds, spooky ladders, spooky boxes, spooky floors, spooky blood, spooky violence, spooky body parts, spooky scissors, spooky cameras, spooky clothes, spooky absence of women, spooky toilets (the spookiest I've ever seen), spooky monitors, spooky water, spooky fires, spooky bricks, your steps are spooky as well.

Everything is spooky there for sure.

Outlast is a survival horror game created by Red Barrels. This game sets on fictional asylum, investigating the Murkoff Industries about the experiments. You play as Miles Upshur, a journalist, trying to expose the truth about Murkoff's plans. Let's talk about the game, you cannot fight back, all you need to do is to hide and run away from those creepy deranged human. Also, you have a night vision camera to guide through darkness BUT you need a battery to use a night vision, so use it well or you will have to find batteries if you are running out of battery. Outlast's setting is dark yet creepy soundscape, that gives you an immersive experience of the game (if you are playing at night with headphones and no lights on XD). The gameplay time, it's about 2 - 6 hours if you are searching for documents and notes. The backstory seems to be interesting about what happen during and before the events of the game if you are reading the documents. The story, I don't know about it, I'd say it is average, better than generic. The most annoying sections are finding three keys for a key(yo dawg) or opening a door, it's a rinse a repeat process.

+Pros
+ Dark and Creepy atmosphere
+ Forgot to mention, jumpscares
+ Detailed graphics running with Unreal Engine 3 (not bad for an indie developer)
+ Chase scenes are heart pumping
+ Story
+ Controls

-Cons
- 3 keys sequence throughout the story
- Ending of the game

Overall, this game is recommended if you want to sign up for it. It is not recommended if you have a heart related sickness or phobia of the dark. The only thing that frustrates me is finding 3 keys sections. The game is still the best horror game I have ever experienced. I will post a review of Whistleblower DLC soon. Also I am going to thank Sparky for giving this game as a gift last year December.

In Outlast, you are investigative journalist Miles Upshur. You've decided to act on an anonymous tip, and so you set off to explore Mount Massive Asylum, an old and decrepit building that has recently been re-opened by the Murkoff Corporation. The nightmares and horrors that lie in wait are beyond anything that you can imagine, and your only possible way out is through hordes of deranged mental patients who've fallen victim to hellish experiments and medical torture. Armed with only a camcorder that has night vision capabilities, you must survive.

Set in a first-person point of view, Outlast is very much like a playable "found footage" horror movie; most of your time will be spent looking through your trusty camcorder, which will help you navigate immensely dark areas. Crazed lunatics and mental patients litter the tight corridors and open expanses of the game, most of which have some sort of deformity; be it mutilated flesh, or stumps where a limb should be. Many are harmless, and will chatter nonsensically, while others are out for blood... your blood. There are a small handful of primary bad guys that you will repeatedly encounter, all of whom are utterly gruesome and terrifying in their own way. You're no fighter, so you must run, hide, and outsmart your foes in order to navigate beyond them.

Much of the interaction between you and the enemies in the game consists of a mixture of chase and stealth sequences. An enemy will burst in out of nowhere, and it's up to you to find the nearest place to duck into; a locker, under a bed, behind a shelf. Sometimes the only thing that you can do is keep running. While these intense moments will make your heart palpitate, and the hair on the back of your neck stand up, near the end of the game it really gets both redundant and expected. Found a key? Well, I guess I'll go hide in this conveniently placed locker because Mr. Huge Pecks is going to come stomping down the hallway any second now! This is really the only downfall of Outlast, and honestly with the deep atmosphere and immersive graphic quality of the game itself, it hardly takes away from the scare factor that the title has. Not to mention, each of these foes has a lavish background to indulge in if you take care to read the collectible documents and notes.

While exploring the gore-soaked, entrail-laden rooms, hallways, and basements of Mount Massive Asylum, you will come across various documents and camcorder notes (if you have your camcorder on during certain events) that will give a large insight into the storyline of Outlast. It seems that the facility that you're exploring has been used for religious surgeries and scientific experiments that have turned many patients into unholy abominations. Many of the ill have been subjected to deranged forms of hypnosis, which has caused their mental state to deteriorate rapidly. Even the doctors have gone rabidly insane. It would be a travesty to suggest that this title relies on jump scares, but the ones that are placed sparsely throughout the gameplay are completely unexpected and scream inducing.

The biggest majority of Outlast centers around navigating from one area to the next, although the game never feels like a walking or key-finding simulator. There are a few puzzles to solve, which usually involve turning a couple of things on or grabbing a couple of items to help you progress; typically while avoiding an enemy that's filled with bloodlust. While this may sound tried, true, and typical for so many horror games, Outlast just does it the way it should be done. This title really brings out all of the stops with AAA quality graphics, detailed atmospheric lighting, memorable characters, constant environment and AI interaction, an extraordinarily suspenseful soundtrack, excellent enemy AI, and some of the most dense atmosphere of any horror game that I've ever experienced; and trust me, I've played nearly every horror game that there is.

Beyond a shadow of a doubt, Outlast is one of the greatest survival horror games since Silent Hill 2 and Resident Evil 4. I would go as far to say that as of this moment in time, it is the best modern horror survival title. No, you don't fight. No, you don't have a gun. You're a regular journalist, and you must use your wits to survive truly insane, deadly enemies. If you're like me, and you love games that are dripping from every corner with blood and gore, boast noteworthy bad guys, have a captivating storyline, and pull you in with an impenetrable atmosphere, then Outlast is the horror game for you. Also consider picking up the Whistleblower DLC, which is a phenomenal prequel addition to the main game.

Rating: 5.0/5.0 - An astonishing achievement, this game must be played.

"Nanomachines, son." ~Alan Turing's long lost geriatric homosexual bald Nazi lover

Absolute, Unbridled Stupidity
That's the only way to describe this game. I really hope this game was intentionally written as an absurdist comedy, because it's hilarious.

Outhouse tells the story of Miles Upshur Without A Paddle, an investigative journalist who recieves an email from "10260110756@mutemail.com" and decides to still take the contents of said email as fact. The email literally contains the line "Terrible things happening there. Don't understand it." and instructs Miles to head to Mount Massive BS Asylum where he'll come face to face with the "terrible things" that lurk within. These 'terrible things" include, but are not limited to: A crazy bald guy that thinks he's a priest, a pair of crazy bald twins that run around nude and make you envious of their massive dongs, a crazy bald guy whose size is an anatomic impossibility, a crazy bald guy wielding giant scissors, a crazy bald ghost, and Alan Turing's long lost geriatric homosexual bald Nazi lover. The developers allege that this is a survival horror game.

Outlast was written and developed by people whom I would describe as competent idiots. Mechanically speaking, their game is well done. It suffers from no obvious technical errors, and while the environments are generic, they are still well designed. The gameplay isn't even remotely scary and I struggle to see how someone could be scared of this, but we don't really play these games for the sake of playing them; we play them for their story, and the story here makes no damn sense whatsoever.

This is where the "idiots" part of "competent idiots" comes into play. The story is so unbelievably stupid that it blew my mind and kept me laughing for days. I'm honestly at a loss for words. It's incredibly original, I'll give it that, but only because it's so stupid there simply isn't a way it could've been done before, or ever again for that matter. I'm struggling to come up with a way to explain it. It's like the video game version of M. Night Shyamalan's the Village. It's best if you just experience it for yourself.

In Conclusion
Outlast is a mess you need to play. I'm most certainly not recommending this game for the right reasons, but that's okay, because a recommendation is still a recommendation.
