About This Game

Hell is an experiment you can't survive in Outlast, a first-person survival horror game developed by veterans of some of the biggest game franchises in history. As investigative journalist Miles Upshur, explore Mount Massive Asylum and try to survive long enough to discover its terrible secret... if you dare.

Synopsis:

In the remote mountains of Colorado, horrors wait inside Mount Massive Asylum. A long-abandoned home for the mentally ill, recently re-opened by the “research and charity” branch of the transnational Murkoff Corporation, the asylum has been operating in strict secrecy… until now.

Acting on a tip from an anonymous source, independent journalist Miles Upshur breaks into the facility, and what he discovers walks a terrifying line between science and religion, nature and something else entirely. Once inside, his only hope of escape lies with the terrible truth at the heart of Mount Massive.

Outlast is a true survival horror experience which aims to show that the most terrifying monsters of all come from the human mind.

Features:

  • True Survival Horror Experience: You are no fighter - if you want to survive the horrors of the asylum, your only chance is to run... or hide
  • Immersive Graphics: AAA-quality graphics give players a detailed, terrifying world to explore
  • Hide and Sneak: Stealth-based gameplay, with parkour-inspired platforming elements
  • Unpredictable Enemies: Players cannot know when - and from where - one of the asylum’s terrifying inhabitants will finally catch up to them
  • Real Horror: Outlast’s setting and characters are inspired by real asylums and cases of criminal insanity

Warning:

Outlast contains intense violence, gore, graphic sexual content, and strong language. Please enjoy.

Outlast was a decent game. It's good points were it's ability to invoke a sense that you were being chased. Most of it's fear came from this. With the remainder being an equal mix of suspense and startle.

The game cripples itself though with a created depenancy on batteries for your night vision camera. It creates a system where you aren't so much worried about hiding, as you are busy scavanging for batteries. Even to the point where dying is a welcome reset, as you now know exactly where the batteries are and don't have to waste time trying to find them.

On top of that, when you are forced into a position where you get chased because of rail roading, the chase is too... Frantic. You don't have time to take literally two seconds to look left and right at the junction and decide which direction to run.

Which ends up boiling down to this: You spawn and immediately grab the batteries under the bed (you already knew they were there), you run down the hall, you turn left because you know right is a dead end. You open the door into the locker room, but don't try to hide in the lockers because you already know you are guarenteed to get caught. You run to the far end of the room where there is another door. You open the door and die. A 'monster' was waiting there. Maybe you're suppose to try to jump out of the windows? You spawn and immediately grab the batteries...

Pros
-Great graphics
-Great sound
-A few really good jump scares
-Very well polished
-Creepy atmosphere (although others have done far better)
-Good length for the price

Cons
-A ton of horror game cliches (haunted mental asylum, weak batteries, hiding in lockers, other stuff that would reveal spoilers)
-Weak ending
-Quickly shifts from being scary to becoming tedious and annoying

The big problem with this game is that while the atmosphere and enemies are creepy, there is a lot of trial and error gameplay particularly when you are beign chased and have no idea where to go. After getting cornered, caught and killed a dozen times you are no longer scared at all and instead are annoyed more than anything else.

The gameplay is weak and there are not really any great stealth mechanics to avoid enemies like in Thief: Dark Project or Splinter Cell. So until you know what to do you just get caught and killed with the same finisher animations repeatedly which is not scary at all but just feels unnecessarily tedious. Rinse and repeat until you eventually figure out which way you are supposed to go.

This game is by no means terrible, but it wasn't the experience I was looking for.

As I give a thumbs up for my review, I think to myself, "What kind of person are you?"

You know when you are playing a horror game or watching a horror movie and everything tells you that the situation is not good and it is not going to get any better and that you will save yourself some scarring if you turn it off? Yet, you keep playing or watching, submitting yourself to any horror that will be thrown at you, BECAUSE YOU JUST HAVE TO KNOW HOW IT ENDS.

That is my relationship with Outlast. I don't know if I would even call this game scary, but I do know that I would call it horrific and tension-filled. I feel like this game already has enough reviews to cover the pros and cons, so here are just some thoughts on how this game affected me.

It was a brilliant, tense, horrific experience and the thought to turn the game off never entered my mind. The idea of investigating a mental hospital for its questionable ethics is fairly typical adventure/survival horror material. However, I felt that Outlast was very fresh and original in its delivery. I've never played anything quite like it, and honestly I hope I don't play many more like this.

I loved the familiar territory of the adventure aspects of this game. Exploring and discovering the secrets of the hospital via notes and documents is always a treat. Luckily, not the entire game is running from people who want to kill you. Actually, it was refreshing to find the mental patient who wanted to help, in his own way, of course. The atmosphere reminded me of wonderful games like Amnesia, where you are in almost constant peril and there is no way to fight back.

Now, maybe I am a little sheltered but after playing Amnesia, Dead Space, and the Silent Hill series, I thought I could face what Outlast had to offer. For a while I could. Raving lunatics wandering halls, bodies everywhere, psychos chasing you - standard fare. But then the DLC Whistleblower unleashed a level of horror that I hope I never see again. His name is The Groom. A fair warning for those who love horror games, what The Groom does may test your gore threshold.

Mechanic wise, I found that the game ran very smoothly and looked great. The constant need to have your camera out added an edge that I haven't felt since Fatal Frame.

So do I recommend this game? Yes. Did I find it fun? That is debatable. I couldn't stop playing. Not because it was necessarily fun, but because I had to believe that putting the poor protagonists through all this was worth it. In the end, I think it was, and I am glad that I played it.

By far, one of the scariest games I've ever played, and hands-down one of the most memorable gaming experiences I've had in a long time.

A little repetitive at parts, but all-in-all, great game.
