ArkCo News 10/17/14

Hey ArkCoNauts!

Things are moving along quite quickly here at Handyman, as we shift from the UI overhaul into a massive content patch that we can’t wait to roll out to you! While there are still a few things that need to be completed on the user interface, we felt that it would be most efficient at this point to stop the rapid hotfix cycle, and incorporate the rest of the UI features into the content patch. It was taking far too much dev time to keep preparing for each patch every few days, and this way we can dig in, focus, and get it all done. The most prominent features still missing from the UI are the teleporting feature on command centers, the PIOS system, and the ability to refuel vehicles. We know that this will be a temporary inconvenience, but we hope everyone will bear with us. It will be well worth it to get as much content into the next patch as we can!

Speaking of the amazing content patch coming up, let’s talk about one of the things you can look forward to seeing. We’ve heard the community voice its concerns many times, that progression right now feels tedious and lacking. One of our answers to that is our new split-path progression. Driven by different sets of armor, a player will now be able to gear up according to their play style. If you like combat, you can steer your progression toward the fighter/warrior armor, which will be most easily obtained by farming enemies. If you’re a builder, you can opt for the builder/engineer style, which will be more easily obtained by mining. The armors for each style will lend bonuses to help your character be better at that area of play, and mixing and matching the different sets will allow you to even further customize your build. From a single linear path currently in game, featuring 5 armor sets, there will now be 19 armor sets available in the first 2 tiers of gameplay alone! We will have plenty more to talk about in the coming weeks as we lead up to the patch, with lots of surprises coming your way!

On the community side, our Halloween Event will be kicking off Friday, October 24th, and will run through Halloween night. We’ll have forum games, giveaways, and more fun surprises to reveal when the time comes. Watch the news and social sites for more information on our spooky shenanigans! Thanks for reading everyone, and we’ll see you next time for ArkCo News!

I want to say I like this game.
I really want to say I enjoy it.
...but I'm afraid i'd be lying if I did.

Now don't get me wrong, I see exactly why people like this game.
It has a very friendly familiar terraria type feel, but it ofcourse changes that up (in a good way may I add) by having a stat system as well as a universal sandbox style rather than just a single world like terraria is limited to.

However, I really can't enjoy this game myself.
I played the tutorial (which unlike some games, is actually well made and explains the mechanics of the game very well)
But when I got into the game it just seemed...slow.

I mean don't get me wrong! I love a game that makes me wait a while to build up a stat system so i can do more awesome stuff, but this game just doesn't give me that satisfaction.
As many other negative reviewers have said up to this point, this game has alot of potential.
It has a bussling community behind it and a long history of frequent updates which continue to this day.

To those who want to play a terraria style game thats universal and don't mind a dreadfully slow pace in its buildup, I say get this game.
But I'm afraid I wouldn't recommend this game as I personally feel that Starbound's nightly beta builds currently beats it by a landslide.

Edge of space is a very ambitious game with current plot holes and some minor glitches. The game however its self has a unique array of weapons, functions, game mechanics overall are interesting. At first I thought this would be somewhat like terraria but I was quickly mistaken. It only looks somewhat similar. Probably a concept overlap in overal cosmetics but other than that it all functions quite seperately. It revolves around you and your character who crash lands on archoa. You need to terraform the planet to be suitable, build a base, etc. Terraforming is not available yet unless they consider base building terraforming but that's unlikely. Overall, I don't have too much to say but this game is great. I'm hooked and it's absolutely a blast with friends! They come out with new content regularly, and while some times things break, other times you get cool things as of now like a gun that glitched past the clip capacity to have 65 ammo. Neat stuff all around. If you like the idea, please support the game and buy it! I pirated it first, and was happy with it until I ran out of cyro rods. That killed it, but then I bought the real deal and ho boy! 10/10, as of right now, I suggest it! The deal maker was cyro rods dropping from jellyfish for me and the fire fox. It takes a bit of brains to figure things out on your own, but do not give up arconauts, it is a journey to see through to the end!

Checklist:
Story: Work in progress but check.
Weapons: Check! (wish they had bigger hit boxes, though you get used to it.)
Monsters: I hate you. (check)
Mechanics: Colorful. Lots of stuff to do and figure out. Check.
Difficulty: Hell yeah! Check!
Variety: I'm not sure. Check in my book.
Fun: Check!
Many moar checks, including bugs. Oh well!

BUY.
THIS.
GAME.

For a game that's still in early access I must say it's rather nice. I've noticed how others say that the game is lacking in certain aspects, but that's because this game is still in early access. If I had to say what this game is... It would be the Space version of Terraria.

played it after playing terraria and nothing feels right. The UI feels awkward and clunky, and the physics just feel wrong. I guess its not for me.

NOTE: This is an early access review. will review again after full release.

I am a fan of this genre of games, I have spent many hours of my life on 2d sandboxes and edge of space is no different.

Edge of space has all of it's own ideas and artwork which I like and I also like all of the little references to other games and things in everyday life. I haven't had much of a chance to play it but the time I have spent on edge of space has been well enjoyed, Edge of Space is definetly worth it.

10/10 love it :)

Edge of Space needs significant improvement before I would recommend that anyone purchase it. The controls are nonintuitive, the interface feels too small and crowded, and currently the game feels like a bad Terraria clone. Your money would be better spent on Starbound if you're interested in this theme.

Bought into the hype, got only disappointment. I'll check back in a few months on the progress of development, but if other Early Access projects are any indicator, it won't get that far.

So far i cannot reccomend this game.

Pros:
- controls feel nice
- art style is nice
- flying fox that holds a lamp. pretty cool.

Cons:
- Game atmosphere isnt their
- music is average
- sounds are poor
- Little direction to what to do. Yes i know you can explore and mine, but i mined stuff and explored several cave's and only encountered crabs and jelly fish, neither offering any chance of a worthwhile reward for my discovery/victory.

As it is, i feel i wasted my money and i should have read my reviews prior to my purchase. Comparing this game to something like terraria or starbound cannot be done because they properly immerse the player into the game and make you feel at home with the great sounds/music.

The game however is being updated frequently which is really nice so if any descent patches come out after my review, you may be able to ignore my review all together, as i too hope to see this game become something awesome.

As of now I wont recommend this to any of my friends.

Cons
-interface locks up and cant recover unless rebooting the game
-server instability
-no control option
-no in-game configurations

Pros
-Looks good
-weapons feel right for the theme of the game
-fighting monster is very enjoyable
-kind of gives a Super Metroid vibe

This is my review as of today and as you can see I didn't play a lot. Why cause there are issues that were very visible. I can see that the game has a lot of potential but I'll recommend that you save your money and wait for more updates.

after a while you will get bored and probably quit
overall if you do go over that stage of bordem and grind it might be the game for you

This game is so confusing

EDIT: Just to reiterate here, I'm going to give some reasoning. When I first got this game, it was in a very early alpha. Mostly everything was broken and buggy. Well, I decided to re-visit it yeterday, and while there are definatly less bugs, it still need a lot of work. First thing the game does is drops you into this very odd tutorial. They start out with the regular, walking, opening doors, etc. But then you get into crafting. The first thing they want you to make is some sort of lazer, so you go through the confusing process of crafting it (I literally cannot explain it beause it is that confusing), only to find out it takes about 6 seconds to mine 1 peice of dirt. One peice. And they make you mine through a whole tunnel of it. After you get out of this tutorial (which takes about 30-40 minutes) you're dropped into your randomly generated world.

And that's it, no further instructions. Now in say, Terraria, you have the guide to help you along a bit. In this game, they give you nothing. So I spent maybe 20 (?) minutes just walking around. Going through caves, all of which were empty, falling of islands, that's about it. Once this game has some polish to it, and a reworked tutorial, I might give it a third try, but for now I wouldn't recommend this game at all.
