Regarding the Update - Minor Delay, More Stuff

Hey ArkCoNauts!

This evening we hit some technical difficulties while getting ready to push the patch, so we made a tough decision, and we're going to hold it till Monday. Giving ourselves that extra time this weekend will allow us to cram even more into the update, and round things out better before it goes out. On the bright side, those who haven't had a chance to pack up all their favorite items and stick them on characters will have more time to do so in advance of the wipe. We'll be setting the timer accordingly, and if anything the patch will be even more worth the wait. Thanks for your patience and understanding guys, and stay awesome!

ArkCo News - 1/24/15

Hey ArkCoNauts!

Hope everyone's holidays were wonderful, and that you're all as excited as we are about the new year! As you may or may not know, depending on whether you watch the countdown on the main menu screen, the next huge update is drawing near! We're very excited about this one, and so we wanted to fill you in on a few things we're working on. The headline is TIER 3!! The biomes in Edge of Space are massive, and the first two tiers of content are still being fleshed out as we go. Up till now, the gear in game has been just barely strong enough to glimpse the desert biome below, but not venture into it yet. We felt it was high time to finally unveil the mysterious 3rd biome, and let players advance that low for the first time in the game's history. It's a huge undertaking to be sure, and the first iteration will feel slimmer than the first two tiers in terms of content. That being said, once the foundations for it are there, it becomes easy to cram content in and bring the area to life. Along with the new biome, will come the new weapons and armor to accompany it, letting players stretch further along the progression chain. Here are a couple of screens of some of the new gear that awaits:

Along with all this awesomeness, we have good news and bad news. The bad news, there will be a wipe needed, due to the extensive changes to the world in this patch. The good news? As of this writing, it appears only worlds will be zapped by it, your characters look like they will survive this one. This means if you get your inventory expanded, you can stuff your most prized possessions into your inventory, and bring them with you into your brand new worlds. Should this change before patch day, we will most definitely update the community, but here's hoping our little ArkCoNauts get to live on!

On the Community side, I wanted to take a moment to thank the 160 awesome people that turned out for our day-after-Christmas live giveaway on IRC! It was a record breaking event for us in terms of attendance, and because of the awesome success, I'm happy to announce we'll be doing it again! Suit up as an operative of the Ark Corporation, sent to the farthest reaches of the universe in search of habitable planets to terraform. However, after the long space journey you awaken from cryosleep to find that your ship has gone way off course and is disabled near a strange new world. With no choice but to descend to the surface and figure out how to survive long enough to complete your mission, you step into the escape pod.

Along the way you’ll gather resources to craft armor, weapons, facilities, and vehicles to help you explore the world and conquer its aggressive inhabitants. Your base of operations will evolve from a few basic facilities exposed to the elements into a hardened fortress full of advanced technologies that let you accomplish amazing improvements to your equipment and alter the environment itself.

EoS is still a buggy and slow paced game. No real wiki to find out your information from, you gotta learn it all by yourself. It'll take you a couple of hours before you really get started on how to play the game. Some of you may be bored after the first couple of hours, because you simply have no idea what you are doing.

BUT for those of you who can get past the first 5-8 hours of playing this game, it may become interesting to explore, to dig to find new stuff, head towards dungeons. With that said, how well you fare in this game is how much patience you really have. You have to read stuff in the codex to learn how things works, you may never get past some parts without help from the community. Its grind intensive, one thing that I don't really like. You have to kill, and kill, and kill, like in an MMORPG, just keep killing, and leveling, want to build more stuff? Kill more, get more science points, convert it to research data.

Eventually it gets so absurd that you need so much research datas and at the same time, you reach a point where you get alot of science points that you either have to find a couple of upgrade platforms and extend your Science maximum capacity OR you just kill and stop, convert it to datas, every few minutes.

If you want to go by the first method to make things a little easier, dig more! The upgrade platforms which are so beneficial and essential but of course, it is so god damn rare. For those of you who have played terraria, it is pretty much like the Crystal Hearts but rarer. Its interesting but also tiring because of how big the world is, You have to explore and explore and explore to find these upgrade platforms. There is simply no way you can chance upon this without luck since there is no navigation help or map for you to refer to.

So do I recommend this game? Sure, I do, but overall I give this game about a 6.5/10. Keep in mind that this is still in early access.

It has a massive content, but not enough help support, things are still very buggy, but it is not unplayable, the designs is pretty and simple, but a little unappealing. The developers are helpful, they respond alot, the game is updated very frequently,

My unsatisfaction with this game is due to its grinding factor of kill dig kill dig, find stuff, continue killing, build stuff, and finally, just finally, you can get to the first dungeon and die more, realising you need better armor, and to get better armor, you need better buildings, so you kill and dig more, to build these buildings and armor, but it is way too slow, so you need to build better tools, but for better tools, you also need to kill and dig more. THEN you also need better weapons, and you know where I'm going with this.

So why am I still playing it? Well to be honest, it is because of the developers. They want to improve this game, so I close an eye while writing this review and at the same time, try to tell you guys about the truth of this game. It is not exciting, half of the game is not completed yet, but hearing what the developers have to say, I'm sure that EoS will be much more fun when it is launched. So i'll give you a couple of reasons to get this game and a couple not to.

Get this game if you
- are patient and want to see the game grow, contribute to the community and give feedback to the developers.
- are willing to fork out money to support the development of EoS.
- are willing to take the risk and pay a cheaper price for early access, with hopes that this game does not end up like other Early access games.
- You are a rich ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, so why the hell not?

Do not get this game (now) if you
- Just want another Terraria-like game to fill your time. (Seriously, if that's your motive, don't get it yet)
- Want to get the full experience right now, and you are unable to tolerate buggy, and slow-paced game. (In this case, you should try Starbound for a better experience)
- Want a multiplayer game for you and your friends to play with. (Yes, reasons for this is because it is likely that either 1 of you are gonna get bored, and when you buy this for multiplayer, you are gonna play this for multiplayer, and end up not playing it when your friends stop.)

*Update*
While this game is not terrible, those of you who do not have that much patience, did not have an enjoyable experience or with expectations that are not met, but at the same time would like a concept similar to EOS, maybe "Signs Of Life" would appeal to you more.

So far I enjoy this game. It's colorful and fun to look at, the music is beautiful and somewhat trippy, and it's a standard 2-d mine and build game. My main issues with it are falling to my death at least thirty time in a session and the slightly odd way characters hold items and move. I assume an actual 'walking backwards' animation will be added at some point. But yeah, I recommend it for what it is at the moment.

Terraria is better, but only because its a fully developed game. This one is still in progress, but is incredibly addictive, even more so than Terraria in my opinion. They've implemented a skilling system, where you repurpose dirt and mud etc into experience data which you then use to level your skills up in order to unlock new weapons and armor. Its a little complicated for those who just came from the simplicity of Terraria, but you catch on pretty quick.

Its a little unbalanced, but what can you expect from an early access game? I say if you liked Terraria, you'll probably like Edge of Space a lot too, but you'll want it when it comes out fully. The world's a little too big, with not enough to do, and the Arctic Biome is really dangerous, but again, I'm expecting these things will be expanded on eventually.

Final verdict: Currently not nearly as deep and immersive as Terraria but has INCREDIBLE potential to become an even better game.

9.5/10 cant wait for the released game

I will keep this short and sweet, 8/10

good:

multi leveled world, deeper than terraria
balanced resource scrounging, nothing is handed to the player
an absolutely unforgiving survival situation, where one step can and will kill you.

Bad:

the tech tier is off a bit, making it nearly insane to get the stuff to explore the lower levels of the world.
The inability to move your spawn point. It wouldn't even need to be moved, if there was a way to remove the tiles underneath it.
The combat damage is way to OP, 90+ damage from flying jellyfish is a bit much.

But none of the bad things listed should detract you from trying this great game out.

As a person who was hyped for Starbound, this game brings to the table a lot of what I wanted from it. While it still is very much an incomplete game, it offers a comfy environment to build your bases in and already enough diversity to satisfy my curiosity. If you enjoy fighting monsters, mining for resources, raiding dungeons with your friends, or just messing around then this game with its 12.99 price tag is absolutely worth it. If you have doubts, buy it now and wait for it to be finished. The team is giving regular patchs and communicating with the community.

Disclaimer: This is an early access title, so as always, buyer beware. It may or may not make it to the finish line, but from what I've experienced over a few years development cycle with this game, it's team is nothing if not dedicated and focused on the goal of pushing this game to release, so I'm fairly confident it will be released, just not as hastily as other titles.

The question to be answered, is whether or not this game is worth buying right now. While it's in the same sandbox genre as popular (and depending on who you ask, infamous) titles such as terraria, minecraft, and starbound, the graphical style sets it apart fairly decisively. It's not super high-res, but the cartoonish yet realistically proportioned characters are a nice change from the pixelized Devs-Don't-Give-A-Damn you sometimes see. What can I say, some people like pixels, others don't. For my part, I do like pixels. Anyway, see the screenshots for a good idea of the art style. At the very least, the art style is consistent throughout the game as far as I've seen.

The devs have taken an interesting direction in the way of progression, in that every action you take, whether it be killing monsters, felling alien vegetation, or just digging up some mud, nets you experience that can be spent toward research in the area of your interest. It's an interesting component that I suppose promotes cooperation and teaming up with other players who can fill the gaps in your research to help fully kit out your base. Materials aren't enough to build all that you need, you actually need the experience and research level to create equipment and objects, unlike terraria and starbound where you only need touch a component to know how to put it together.

The alien environments don't take the typical planetoidal approach to world generation, and instead you find your avatar cast adrift on a sea of floating islands, which you can hop from one to the next with a handy jetpack, which you get from playing through the tutorial at the very beginning of the game. It's necessary to build a suit of armor with exposure protection in order to delve deeper into the world's depths, so progression is a multi-pronged challenge as you have to gather experience and then spend it correctly in order to build a base and equip yourself for the dangers you'll find in the lower levels of the planet.

There's not much else for me to say about this title, but if you're still on the fence after hearing all of this, know that the game is still in development, and in order to expedite the process your characters and worlds may be wiped. So bear that in mind if it's a factor in your decision.

For my part, I bought it at 20 dollars a while back, and like where the game is going. I trust this dev team enough to get the job done eventually, and really look forward to when it's finished. If you have the money to spare and want to put it to a project, and this one sounds good based on all you've heard, great. Honestly, this either is your cup of tea or isn't, and that's okay. I will say that it's my cup of tea, and an interesting and very different entrant to the 2d sandbox genre. I don't regret buying the game.

Not a great game at the moment. But amazing potential. I'm very interested in the "Big Patch A’ Coming" in 12 days. If you do choose to play the game as is I suggest you dig a 2x2 hole. Then stand to one side and angle your laser just slightly so that you sort of auto-dig until you die, then invest in data and repeat several times. If you can handle that mundane repetition... it kinda becomes interesting.

I like Edge of Space a lot. It's not my faovrite 2D sandbox but it's up there. I think it's the Devs that make playing and supporting Edge of Space worth it in the end. I have not played much Edge of Space because I have a new thing where I don't play early release game. I only give them a test run and either pass or fail them or sometimes give them more time. I did not vote positive or negative on edge of space back in the day. But I felt the game was pretty bad! But I knew it would get better. And I have watched 30 or so hours of the game in recent updates and now I can safely say that I love Edge of Space and it's great being able to listen to the Devs and see how they take both positive and negative feedback and work to improve the game.

Edge of Space is a bad game. Not only that, but it advertises itself as "The next Terraria". You DO NOT get the feel of Terraria while playing this game, and thats not what I base my opinion on. I base it off of, the VERY BAD tutorial. What game messes up ON A TUTORIAL. I was confused on what to do DURING THE HELP PART OF THE GAME. Eventually, I made my way to the planet, on which, I died. Was it fun? No. Did I learn anything about this game through so called death? No. Did I enjoy a single second of the gameplay? No. If you want a fun Terraria-like space adventure game that is in Early Access? GO GET STARBOUND. STARBOUND IS A MILLION TIMES BETTER THAN THIS FOR ONLY $15 GO. NOW.

First off let me appologize, I'm not the best at words and this review's probably a bit all over the place, but do yourself a favor and give it a chance.

While this game is quite underdevelopped with stuff like missing info, dev notes on a few items and unfinished content (Note all the twits posting bitter reviews. While they do have good points on some of them THIS IS FEEDBACK TO BE GIVEN FOR THE DEVELOPERS, not splattered onto the review section to give the game a bad face. They listen AMAZINGLY well to feedback.), the developers have been producing updates and status reports at a near constant rate and on top of that they are highly responsive in the forums, having replied many times to my silly little posts in the past about small things. They feel like people, not faces put on for a job but at the same time remain professional, and to top it off they feel honest and seem to genuinely care about their game.

To be blunt, I see this game going places if they market it right when the game's finished, I just hope people give this game a chance and help fund it by picking up a copy while it's in early access. It's fairly priced, and as I said before the devs are a stellar example of what developers SHOULD be like, and I can honestly feel the game improving a good amount as the game goes through production with lots of polish and fine tuning, feedback from the community being taken into account, and big bugs that pop up are usually fixed very quickly. If you've played this game before and hated it, do yourself a huge favor, give it another go upon release. I might just be overly optimistic, but I have good feelings for this game, and that's saying a lot in the world of scams, lies, "bullzhitting" and greed that is the current gaming industry.

Oh, and if you're wondering why I didn't really talk about the actual game, it's because the game's changing a lot so quickly, to review it while it's doing so would be completely unfair and unreasonable. You can find some info you might be after on the storefront. Just do yourself a favor and ignore the bitter reviews for reasons I've stated already.

And another little note, they usually have a countdown INGAME for their next updates with info on the patch usually found in the forum, and while this can be off a few days for valid reasons they generally provide, it's pretty reliable.

this game is getting a LOT of negative reviews and I see some same complaints-- No tutorial (There wasnt, there is now) - cant skip the tutorial (You obviously DIDNT read anything at all, did you?) - There's no content updates blah blah or theres not enough of X in the game yet... well I have been involved in a TON of early access projects (DayZ pops into my mind when people say "No content") and I would personally want them to re-hash and re-do gameplay mechanics before adding content, and this one has gone from having nothing but tiles, to having a power grid, to having a control system (Machines need command nodes to run) and more, and more content and bosses... went from having nothing but a few penguins with rocket launchers to terraria crossover bosses and random events... it is still early and the team may not be as large as you would like, but development is constant, and consistent-- meaning they arent working on other projects with early access money from this, at least not to the point its affecting development. Most complaints are people "I cant find ores" those people are used to easier games (Like terraria, which is fun, but face it, not hard at all) this game forces you to completely upgrade before moving much further through an exposure system (Go too low, die from the planets core radiation. makes perfect sense, but most people cry) and extremely tough enemies that dont take much damage from the starter guns.

All in all I am excited to see where they go with the rest of this project. As 2 out of 5 biomes are done as of this review, and countless systems still planned, and some tweaks to existing ones. Amazing progression system if you arent a crybaby.

TL:DR: Most reviews on this game are because people are stupid and don't read, this game is solid, and has constant updates and shows not just promise, but progress.... suppourt it if you liked terraria but it was too easy

You've just crashed on a planet. All you've got is some utilities from your ship you were able to grab. You can mine, you can build, and you can craft. What will you do to survive?

(tl;dr at bottom)

If you're a fan of Terraria, but want something a little more bizarre, and more focused on space, this is definitely your game. Don't see it as Terraria or Minecraft knock-off, though. This game is one of the most unique games of this type that I've seen. Most notably, the crafting system. The way this game's crafting system works is just fantastic. Rather than picking around for specific blocks, you are able to craft things by finding blocks to fit the requirements for density, permiability, and other criteria for creating an object. There is more to this, but I'd rather let you find that out for yourself, as there are many machines in this game that would take a while to fully explain.

As you can see the graphics in the screenshots, and audio in the trailers, I'm not really going to dive that deep into them. The only thing I'd like to note is character creation. There is at least a moderate amount of customization for your character off the bat, and even more when you consider vanity and armor further in the game, so if that's the type of thing you're into, consider it another plus.

This game isn't completely great though, and I won't be able to stress enough that this game is EARLY ACCESS, and that's what you're paying for. A lot of it isn't done. There are bugs and glitches (though not really anything that will ruin the experience).

tl;dr

Pros:

+ Plenty of other machines to play around with
+ Block variety (there are vending machines, TVs, etc that you can craft)
+ Customization
+ Boss fights
+ Misc. world events (worm holes and such will crop up here and there)
+ Concept (the idea is cool)

Early Access Review
***I will retain the original review here, but I will add and mark new points. If you want my most up-to-date review, scroll down.***

I'm going to be completely honest; there's a lot of potential here and I hope it reaches it, but so far I'm just not seeing it. I'm trying not to be too harsh, I respect the dev team and their game, but here are my impressions...

The first thing that comes to mind with this game is; There's alpha games, and then there's ALPHA games. While I play a lot of games in alpha and beta stages, I usually enjoy the experience because they often bring something new and innovative to the table to make them interesting. Sadly, I'm just not seeing it with the alpha of this game. There's little that I would consider standout, innovate, or unique. The mining lazer is cool, but not groundbreaking, and mindnumbingly slow without any upgrades in sight. At the very least, it should have the option to heat the targeted rock and at least one sqaure of the rocks around it at a slower rate. This would speed up the process while still allowing precision. Jetpacks are cool, but the limited energy and energy regen followed by blind jumps makes them more frustrating than anything. If nothing else, the early jetpacks could use a massive buff until more is added and that situation is sorted out strictly for exploration purposes. Beyond those two features, the game doesn't have much to offer.

My next gripe is the actual game's goal and layout. The game gives you the goal of terraforming, and that's about it. I really didn't like that goal. I don't feel like it's a goal at all. Terraforming is just something you DO in this kind of game from start to finish. I don't feel like something I'm going to be doing anyways -and can do at any point- should be my final goal. It gives little to work towards other than "look I mined out this rock lol." If my goal is to terraform, than I want to be given a final idea of what I'm terraforming towards, rather than just changing the landscape slowly. Which brings me to my other argument; the real "goal" players give themselves is simply going downwards. I feel like the only way to progress is to mine resources and then continue falling downwards in hopes of new discoveries. There's also multiple levels as you fall downwards, resulting in higher risk areas. This is great and all but then why terraform anything on the top levels if the better resources and more interesting stuff is downwards? Why even set your roots and your house at the top just to work your way back down and farther again? I'm not trying to be harsh, I just think some good thought has to be put into these concepts before the game moves forward and falls flat on its face.

I'm hoping that my investment, and the investments of everyone else gets put to good use here. I think somewhere in this alpha is a great game, but right now it's barely in a playable stage. It's just very unsinspiring when compared to the games everyone, myself included, will immediately pin it to- being Terraria and Starbound. Both of those games have unique and recognizeable art, music, gameplay, and attitude. Even the art in Edge of Space feels cluttered and weird and just like it needs to have its own personality to it. I will say that I love the music at the opening menu though.

Closing thoughts; I don't regret supporting this game and I hope it continues getting support so that it can become a full-fledged competitor with other similar games, and hold a meaningful spot in a steam library. That said, until the game brings proof that it's serious and has something to prove to the gaming world, I wouldn't recommend putting coin into it to have it gather dust in your steam library.

Well I'm not entirely sure I can list everything they did, but the devs are pulling through on this one. With some UI overhauls, and massive variable tweaks, even the initial few minutes feel much more active and fluid than before. The progress curve is much more obvious right now and you have to work towards your progress points individually. Exploration is a bit easier now as jetpacks have recieved decent buffs, nulling my earlier complaint about them. Also mining has been considerably buffed, with an early "overcharged" mining lazer now available that damages at least 2 layers of blocks at a time. So my mining complaint is decently nulled. There's a bunch of other tweaks/buffs that improve fluidity of gameplay including changes to weapons, monster health, so on so on.

My initial impression before was that the game was an unplayable wreck and I was a bit disappointed in it. Right now my impression is that I can really start to get into this game. Although I feel it's a bit lacking in overall content right now, yaddayadda it's an alpha, we've been here before. It could just use a bit more... Variation? Maybe just several different sprites for the wildlife or something. The sights get a bit repetitive at the start. I haven't moved too far in yet as there is quite a lot of grinding involved now.

All-in-all I'm refraining from saying I recommend this game just yet. While it has shown significant improvement and I feel like the devs have listened to complaints and worked to better the game, I'm still not ready to recommend this game. I'm going to see if the devs are still dedicated to improving the game and adding content, and if they seem committed and the game starts to come together I will change it to recommended in a heartbeat.

Early Access Review
This game is one of the good examples for Early Acces. The Dev team is really nice and are very present and working with the community. Constant patches and addet content keeps making the game get better and better and i don´t regret buying into this at all. The art style, music and ambient is just awesome and everyone who like this genre should give it a try.
Even tho it got Terraria content in it it is by far not a clone and got it´s own unique feeling to it as it is more focused on action and plays more like a metroid game when it comes to progression and gunplay.
A big thumbs up from me .
