Not gone, but a lot has been going on (That Ryhmes...)

Hey everyone. I know it's been quite a some time since we have posted or patched the game.

It's been a very complex ride after the release, and I will go more into it in another post.

What I wanted to get out there was that we are still alive and we have not just abandoned you, but there were logistical things that had to take priority.

In my next post I will ellaberate on that more directly, as I can not at the moment. But to say the least, please bare with us.

Patch v1.09 - Happy Holidays!

Hey ArkCoNauts!

We have another round of fixes for your gaming pleasure, and are still working through the suggestions and feedback from the community. We are in the process of revamping the NPC system in a number of ways, but that update will be longer in coming as the holidays are approaching, and the team takes time off to spend with family and friends. After the new year we’ll be sitting down to plan things out, and update the community on what’s next. Happy Holidays from our family to yours!



  • Sound now updates while the game is paused (this prevents looping or repeating issues)
  • The ”Welcome to the edge” and “one of us” achievements work again
  • Carbon Fiber factory now works like the other factories. The required quantity has been reduced from 5 to 3.
  • Unused stats have been removed from the character stats tab. Exposure Rank has been added to the stats tab
  • Fixed an issue where inventory slots could be active past the bottom of the inventory window
  • You can now only drag and drop things from the crafting slots if the target slot is empty
  • Banner popups no longer block mouse input
  • Clarified reforge schematic tooltips in the knowledge window
  • Added a form of triple jump to the defense mech and removed falling damage from it as well
  • Improved vehicle related creature hate (aggro) for vehicles with weapons
  • Fixed the arm animation when aiming left and up
  • Fixed an issue where teleport menu would remain active after teleport and not update
  • Ammo requirements for weapons now appear on the right side of the crafting window
  • Boomerangs no longer knockback targets, which should correct a number of issues
  • Changed how anomalies (non-bunker crab nests and jelly nests, crab eggs, random mechs, etc) spawn near structure tiles and bunkers/nests. This should reduce the chance of anomalies spawning near player bases as long as the background tiles are not empty or naturally occurring resources (dirt, rock, mud, clay, ice, biomass, aluminum, titanium, uranium, radium, or promethium). The dirt structure, rock structure, et cetera tiles will prevent anomalies, just not the basic tiles

About This Game

Suit up as an operative of the Ark Corporation, sent to the farthest reaches of the universe in search of habitable planets to terraform. However, after the long space journey you awaken from cryosleep to find that your ship has gone way off course and is disabled near a strange new world. With no choice but to descend to the surface and figure out how to survive long enough to complete your mission, you step into the escape pod.

Along the way you’ll gather resources to craft armor, weapons, facilities, and vehicles to help you explore the world and conquer its aggressive inhabitants. Your base of operations will evolve from a few basic facilities exposed to the elements into a hardened fortress full of advanced technologies that let you accomplish amazing improvements to your equipment and alter the environment itself.

Can't really recommend this to anyone at this stage. Feels like the game is still in beta - only 1/4 of the game is finished. How can you even release a game when there's nothing to play? Also the game is glitchy, buggy, gives errors time to time..

On the bright side the game has potential to be fun and enjoyable like Terraria. It just takes time. A lot of time..

I have stayed away from this game for a while due to its low ratings, but decided to buy it during the christmas sale. I wanted to play it for myself to see how it was. Here are my thoughts from just an hour and a half of playtime.


Pros:
+ Has something like a main quest line
+ Has mini events that appear on the planet, with objectives
+ Has a crafting system with trees that look like they have a reasonable amount of items
+ Has an npc with a bunch of dialogue, uncommon for this genre
+ Has a strange (but interesting) artstyle that reminds me of AVwW, but a little different
+ Some of the equipment looks well drawn, and very nice as future outfits

Cons:
- Crafting system requires large amounts of materials to make mundane or low tier objects
- Enemies and destructibles drop lots of loot and it feels like my inventory is weighed down with junk just a few minutes into the game
- The tiered system for items/crafting isn't intuitive or sensible (other than weapons/tools named "Mk. 1", "Mk.2", etc.)
- The tiers locking you out of building or crafting some items feel arbitrary despite being in an already arbitrary game setting
- Mining the necessary materials for the beginning quests or items is very slow, boring, and repetitive; it's so unengaging that it feels like busy work
- Mining laterally is A PAIN at times because the laser eminates from your upper chest and you can't mine a straight line below or above that level due to that constraint - you have to mine extra blocks to get line of sight for your laser (which technically makes sense, but this isn't real life and an arbitration could be made here, even just letting us CROUCH would fix half of the problem)
- Moving the character is clunky, you stop on a dime and using the jetpack arrests upward movement to begin a slow acceleration upward (but using the jetpack to slow your fall does very little to slow you unless you were already falling at a slow speed)
- The npc with dialogue is annoying, makes annoying sounds each time you respond to it, and doesn't help you with the early game much other than telling you what the tutorial pane (accessed with the U key) does.
- Several parts of the game are very arbitrary, like being magically unable to mine in an event area until you complete the event (but then able to mine with no problem afterward)


Conclusion: The game almost has the barebones of a sandbox crafting adventure game, with what looks like a reasonable amount of content added in. But content doesn't make a game, it only adds to it. The base gameplay, the platforming, the item collection and crafting, just feels bad. It does not feel finished. It feels like a prototype with extra content.

Playable but still feel a lot missing, and creating base can annoy you because you cannot control blocks shape and you have laserpick!

At least you still got the fun collecting something, from weapon, armor, furniture, vehicle, mount, pet, resource, and loot.

Like:
[+] not chibi-char pixelated-art style thing.
[+] you can zoom close enough to see how cool char detail, tho the helmet design is ... meh
[+] removed the ugly space station used for tutorial. the tutorial content is okay, but I can't stand how bad to look at the space station design, from tile, furniture to background image....
[+] resource has its own classification info, like aluminium tile is raw-mineral-metal-aluminium, ice tile is raw-chemical-ice, biomass tile is raw-organic-biomass. kinda feel fresh than other game in the same genre that I play.
[+] more flexible on crafting, since some items not directly specify resource name, instead it uses resource class like mineral or metal so that item can be craft with all item that classified as mineral or metal... etc.
[+] all kind transportation, from living being transport to deadly transport vehicle, from digger vehicle to fast moving with jumppack vehicle, from hover/flying vehicle to land explorer vehicle.
[+] mech that go pew-pew... but I just don't understand why it scattered around map...
[+] power system? to powering your energy hungry base, tho kinda simple.
[+] epic opening music, tho the in-game music is meh, especially the night time and in cave...
[+] vertical biomes.
[+] pet that help you with buff, from chicken and fire fox to angry croc.
[+] prospector transport vehicle is really help with mining operation. make me wish there is autonomous vehicle to clean up the entire contingent/land
[+] Kit, from "helping you from teleport you around map" to "something that make you a walking hi-tech tool bech"
[+] flying shark with laser and razor teeth.
[+] armor with special class function, from armor for fighter to armor to builder.
[+] player statistic that write down all kind info of player char. tho not really detailed cus only practical stat, no global stat like kill count of each enemy, distant move with foot, with vehicle, with mount ... etc
[+] when you die, your friend can help to revive you so you don't need to revive at spawn location.


Meh, but okay:
[] all weapon from range to melee, from small to big... is 1-handed type...
[] few/no particle effect, like something left behind after you boost your jetpack... oh right, hi-tech and in space no need something like that.
[] there is puking boom in every wild nest...
[] NPC is just a talking static turret quest giver...
[] face right side and your char became left-handed, face left side and your char became right-handed....
[] kinda useless melee weapon, since they are just flapping like a dodo.
[] vehicle cannot ramming to tile for easy destruction...
[] bad sound effect... at early access , I tho it was just place holder... but now the sound of pickaxe is like radio static with volume at 5%...
[] music volume can't be apply directly, you must exit game to menu first before you hear the diff...
[] [opening video] why the hell the space transport attack each others...
[] very few critter type.
[] annoying snail and frog that can drag you around.
[] game menu and gameplay menu is... well, placed together, I should be hate this kind thing, but whatever...
[] meh UI design, I like the old one for showing player condition like HP, shield, and energy.
[] why only 8 active slot ...


Hate:
[-] no world map? only mini map... hmm maybe later... I don't know....
[-] background parallax is trying to mimic my windows background by using tile setting... seriously... this kinda lazy... tho I like the cloud but the flying land image is too repetitive.
[-] no ecosystem, like snail eat all kind vegetation, raptor eat snail, headhunter eat raptor?... I saw frog used his tongue... but I don't know what he ate? so now everyone either ignore me or just try to kill me on the spot!
[-] some projectiles that should not pass thru a tile... kinda annoying seeing that homing on me.
[-] removed char creation background, with dull UI... well the old one was not that good but still better than current char creation...
[-] some...many items has same icon.
[-] static furniture, ex: like you can not use fridge to store consumable items; or you can not see the periodic table when right clicking on periodic table furniture....
[-] dull light effect... hahaha I don't know how to call it, but ... ex: flood light illuminate all surround area but still in small area, I thought it should only illuminate spot area.
[-] metallic jetpack use earthen jetpack icon.
[-] invisible headhunter totem decoration.
[-] still using "Update Me" on Artilla Bear transportation 8 description
[-] sometimes char can not go down from platform.

[-] the way laserpick works is annoying, from just mining to building your base you can destroy any nearby furniture and tile just to get 1 of your miss placed/target tile... doubling your works.
[-] cutting thing is very slow, and yield small amount resources...

An interesting experiment testing what would happen if a game was made with a quality programmer and a talented game artist but without a designer. To me it feels like a game made by committee, everyone added a bit of what they wanted and no one walked away happy. I dislike being negative about a game because its obvious a lot of effort went into this, but it feels, akward, and forced. The humor is wierd, from the laser shark to the quests, the progress is jerky and unsatisfactory and the world is a jumbled nightmare. Ultimately, this game has twice the content of a game like Crea, and none of the charm.

tl;dr - good bones, awful execution, give it a miss in its current state.

Game design is one of those things that, when done really well, goes almost unnoticed. Sadly, this is the one area where Edge of Space really fails to deliver. The art isn't bad, the worlds are imaginative, and some aspects of gameplay are actually very fun! Tearing through rock with a high-powered mining lazer feels great. Unfortunately, these high points are all brought down by clumsily implemented features that are frustrating and poorly explained. A lot of things nagged at me during the 12-or-so hours I spent trying to enjoy Edge of Space, but I'll focus on the worst: dungeons.

At a certain point in the game, progression through the tech-tree is halted by materials that can only be obtained from a dungeon. No problem! Except the dungeons are awful. The freedom of your jetpack and mining laser are stripped from you, and you're forced to clumsily hop along through some kind of half-baked platformer full of dark, confusing, repetitive rooms. Exploring the rest of the dungeon after going down a dead-end branch involves slowly backtracking through rooms that are even harder to navigate in reverse. It's so tedious that it's easier to just die so that you can start again from the top. The drop-rate for those materials you need is abysmal to boot. Just terrible all-around.
