ArkCo News - 9/15/14

15 Σεπτεμβρίου

Hey ArkCoNauts!

As you all know, the patches have been pouring out, so it’s been awhile since we sat down for the news. The team is back from PAX, and we’re really happy with everyone’s response at the show. Players were treated to a crazy challenge dungeon, showing off what the dungeon system is capable of and what we have in store for the near future. Now that we’ve gotten back into the swing of things, the next patch on the 22nd is starting to take shape. The focus has to do with UI redesign, something many have felt the game needs. We have not been deaf to that feedback at all and things are already looking so much better as we move forward with this! Here's a look at the new character selection screen:

http://i.imgur.com/hk8FtIY.png

Following this patch, we start to look again at the bigger picture, and move forward to another huge overhaul of player progression. We’ll be bringing in some very exciting new directions for it, and it will allow the player to take a far more active role in deciding how their character is built throughout the game. The player experience is very important to us, and it’s an area we know has been in need of the attention for a long while. From here, we continue to build progression and solidify the way the higher tiers of content will fit in. The changes coming will start to move from the frame that is in place now, to a more robust, multiple play-style system. While some may instinctively groan at the idea of having to re-learn things, the overall result ties in beautifully with all the progress the game has made over the first half of the year. We’re very proud of what Edge of Space has become and look very much forward to seeing these new changes in the hands of players. We will be listening closely to the feedback from you all, as we continue to polish the game, and make it feel better to play than ever before.

On the Community side, we are drawing ever closer to our Halloween event, and are excited to see that coming together. With the help of our awesome community team, we look forward to some frightening fun in October. Good times are ahead, and we’re ready to rock this! Thanks for reading, and we’ll see you next time for ArkCo News!

Patch v0.2407 - Post PAX Mini Patch

5 Σεπτεμβρίου

We survived another PAX! We’re back, and getting right back to work, with another round of fixes and a few new additions and changes!

New Features:

-Shields! Player now has shield in addition to health bar

Shields take damage before you take damage. If you do not take any damage for 15 seconds your shields will auto recharge. Good Hunting Operatives.

Fixes:

-Fixed an issue where ArkCo Platforms would cause memory errors and cause other tiles to vanish
-Fixed an issue with sky rendering and shading system
-Fixed an issue where players splitting stacks of items were picking up multiple items instead of one at a time
-Fixed an issue where right clicking an item would cause the black hole (trashbin) to remain open and active
-Fixed an issue where player screens would “snap” when riding on a vehicle that is changing direction
-Fixed an issue where skiff pad was not recoverable
-Molten Armor stats are now up to snuff with current implementation balance values
-Fixed an issue where Task Markers were not being displayed properly in Jetpack section of Tutorial
-Fixed an issue where players could become stuck in the dungeons and the doors would not function

Changes:

-Players will now flash red when taking damage
-Creatures now flash white when taking damage
-Critical Math has been corrected
-Weapons now use a Range of Damage stat (must recraft weapons to gain new stats)
-Reload Time has been removed from the procedural setup and instead will stay consistent unless modified by a bonus attribute
-Fire Rate has been removed from the procedural setup and instead will stay consistent unless modified by a bonus attribute
-Armors now have Shield Boosting Stats

Edge Of Space may just seem like another one of those Not-so-smash-hit Terraria replicas. However, if you actually explore the game you'll find that it's much more than that.

First off, There's the hefty tutorial, and the (rather) steep learning curve. You'll probably be finding yourself tripping over yourself in the three different menus, each at a not-that-convenient spot on your keyboard.(V for Crafting? Really?) All the while your having your energy zapped by one of those nice little energy suckers. But once you get used to the very confusing interface it shouldn't be much trouble.

Now that we are out of the inital Edge Of Space experience, we'll start talking about some of it's better qualitys. First and most noticable thing is the Weapons. In this game, you can take the phrase "No weapon is the same" literally. Different types, Different Ammunition, Different Specs, just about different everything. Ever played Borderlands 1 or 2? Take their weapon system and apply it hear.

Next:
Updates. Your never not sure when another updates going to be out, because they have a in-game update timer, and the updates are shot out faster than most Early Access games can blink.

THE RESULT:
While many players will get bored and lose interest in the first chunk of gameplay, those who stick around sure will be going for a fun ride- and loss of outside-world productivity. If you're a patient gamer, I recommend you pick up this title right now.
You won't be dissapointed.

Edge of Space is a dream for sci-fi fans. Also, is a dream for the early adopters, because the devs are always upgrading the game and talking to the community. This is how an Early Access game should be!

If you buy before the official launch, you'll receive exclusive content. If sandbox games are your cup of tea, I highly recommend you to try Edge of Space!

UI needs a massive overhaul, its clunky, unresponsive and in general just a pain to use. Saying it now since its early access and there is still time to fix it.

ΚΡΙΤΙΚΗ EARLY ACCESS
Easily the most dull game of the year.

I've been playing Edge of Space the past eight hours; with the single thought in my mind of: "This game must get better eventually, right?" well; I've been essentially in the same spot with the same equipment for the past five hours. Killing crabs n' jelly fish, and mining titanium, aluminum, stone, mud, clay, and dirt does get old after a while. I found a strange white box with a blue arrow on it in a cave and tried to us eit, but that just flashed some screen for half a second and went away; and I was unable to interact with it again. But let's put things into points for the sake of organization:

Good things:
*Good movement system.
*Good art & music.
*Online co-op.
*Interesting concept.

Bad Things:
*Very unpolished.
*Bad interface & not very user-friendly.
*No explanation for the purpose of alot of things, for example the matter recombiner; the game does not tell you what it does, and the description is simply: "You can't even wager a guess as to how this crazy machine works.", normally checking a wiki would help an issue like this, but their wiki is ancient and not updated. And then there are things like the random events that go on in the world like the crab nests, and random things such as the weird white box with blue arrow- no idea what purpose the box served, didn't realize the crab nest was an event.
*Lack of things to do; the only goal you might have in the game is simply go lower.. And there is no reason to go lower as you have all the resources you need in the top areas.
*Lack of resources; it may seem like a good thing that alluminum is basically the most awesome freakin' resource in existence, but it really makes the game boring when you're not bothering to actually look for things.
*Uninteresting enemies.
*Uninteresting areas; why would the devs think it was a good idea to make the entire game take place on some floating rocks ?
*The relaxing music and police sirens(?) doesn't lower the boring factor of this game.
*Terrible enemy AI.
*Poorly made tutorial levels, tutorial more interesting than the actual game.
*Extremely useless chests; for this let me explain how chests work, you craft one then place it in the world; then you right click it to open it, you then have to manually drag and drop each item you wish to place in it, into it; and the chest only has three slots.
*Lack of creativity; how many times has the space shark and space animals concept been done now?
*Very unprofessional dev team.
*Just a shoddy game in general; people like to consider it as a terraria and starbound ripoff- but in all honesty that's an insult to both Terraria and Starbound.
*I'm fairly certain the preview images which show awesome things happening are all fake.
*Dropped items from full inventory disappear within seconds, made 7 chests to put my items somewhere- didn't realize my inventory was full, chests vanish. Make a full suit of aluminum armor, don't realize inventory is full, poof.
*Glitchy items: Made two chests, had two slots free- placed a chest, the other chest vanished into nowhere. Used an emergency recall, had two in my inventory; the other vanished.

If I had any suggestions for this game; I recommend they take a page from Windforge and add player made spaceships to fly around the edge of space.

ps: Don't use the Omega research unless you have good equipment, it just brings you to a boss whom will murder you if you still are using low level stuff.

Well, all in all I recommend the game; but make sure you don't play it at night or else you're liable to fall asleep from the sheer boredom it causes; and if you're planning on buying the game because of the awesome screenshots you saw of like a desert and mechs and whatnot- those are definitely faked, there are four biomes; you can go to about two of them, a grassy biome and a cold biome. There's also about 8 or so enemies currently and about six(?) different resources.

ΚΡΙΤΙΚΗ EARLY ACCESS
Edge of Space is an upcoming (currently in Early Access) Terraria-esque sandbox game, but not without some interesting changes!

What immediately set Edge of Space apart from other similar games for me is its increased RPG elements: your character has impressive list of stats, from expected health and energy to such stats as dodging or resistance to various damage types. What is more, your stats don’t depend on equipment alone: scattered across the world are technology caches, which not only give you access to more advanced gear or devices, but also have chance to improve your innate stats.

Another of game’s innovations is its crafting system: where in other similar games each recipe calls for specific resources, Edge of Space often lets you substitute one similar resource for another. And the full list of craftable items looks impressive indeed – in 10 odd hours I’ve played so far I feel I touched only the tip of the iceberg.

And finally, Edge of Space has certainly an unique approach to world design – rather then the world being a one mass, it is made of countless floating island. Don’t feel like digging down? Walking to the islands’ edge and jumping down to the island bellow is always an alternative. (And having a jetpack from the start helps you not to fall to your death this way. Usually.)

Still being in early access, Edge of Space kind of doesn’t feel as ‘polished’ as Terraria, though as of latest patch, single-player doesn’t have any real issues I can point out. As far as multiplayer is concerned, a rather annoying issue is that you can’t use your single-player characters in multi-player. Multiplayer literally came out in last patch, though, so issues are expected, and to my knowledge developers are working them.

To sum it up: Edge of Space is already a fun game to play, despite being in Early Access. If you played and enjoyed Terraria, and look for a similar, yet different experience, Edge of Space may be just what you need! If you are new to sandbox exploration/building games, however, you may want to start with Terraria, which is a finished product.
