Happy Holidays, ArkCoNauts!

We hope you’re all on the good list this year, because you’re in for a treat from Handyman. Our Holiday event is here! During the event, look out for Santa, who will be on the loose bringing his own mayhem to the game. After the event, the Christmas Dungeon will remain in the game in a more limited fashion, appearing in the comet biome on a more infrequent basis. That’s right! Even if you fall victim to future wipes, you’ll still have a chance to get back all that lovely holiday loot!

New Content

Christmas items are now available
Christmas Dungeon is now available
Christmas Dungeon TIPS: Chocolate Coins are given at start and dropped by creatures, these are for upgrading defense towers.
Christmas Dungeon TIPS: Dungeon Nav Data drops from Lower Proto-Biome and Comet Biome

Fixes

Fixed an issue where arklights could not be seen by other players in dungeons in multiplayer
Fixed an issue where chitins for Speedy Raptor were not dropping

Changes and Additions

Nav Data now stacks to 21 instead of 7
Penguin and DJ Dubstep Penguin dungeons are now accessible
Added dialogue to explain failure to connect to a server, should now give reason for failure

Patch v0.3304 - Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays, ArkCoNauts!

Our festive bug smashing continues, with another round of fixes and changes. We will be taking some time off for Christmas next week to spend with family and friends, before coming back to dig in to another big content patch. We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season, from our family to yours! <3

Fixes

  • Physics calculations have been move to a separate thread. This fixes several issues with jumping, jetpacks, and collision that could occur at low framerates.
  • Fixed several issues which caused frame rate drops on some systems.
  • Creatures killed in a single shot no longer withhold Science XP in revenge.
  • ArkCo employees have been reminded of the difference between left and right and should be less confused about which direction to face when aiming up or down.
  • Fixed an issue where Nautilus and a couple other creatures were bypassing shields (They have our frequency!)
  • Fixed an issue where the cybernetics station art was spazzing out (Short circuit?)
  • Fixed an issue in multiplayer where some removed tiles would not update for all players (G-g-g-g ghost tiles? Zoinks!)
  • Brown mundo crabs will once again inflict damage if you make them mad (Silent treatment)
  • Fixed an issue that caused various sync issues between clients when loading chunks or worlds. (Communication breakdown)
  • Optimized various packets to improve transmission of creature and world updates.
  • Max Science XP is now updated correctly on the progress bar. (Blinded by science)
  • Fixed an issue where cryorod count would not update properly (My pod gets 40 rods to the hogshead and that’s the way I like it!)
  • Fixed an issue that caused some canceled quests to re-appear in multiplayer (I can’t quit you)
  • Laser Picks are no longer blocked by various non-terrain objects
  • Equipping a jetpack in the appearance slot will now change the jetpack effect
  • Creatures now see deployable turrets as valid targets (The guns… they’ve stopped)
  • The Skiff Pad now show the time remaining in multiplayer (Finally, a countdown)
  • The Codex and Enhancements hotkeys now open the correct tab of the Character Window (In your face, interface)
  • Fixed an issue where certain Anomalies could spawn creatures inside of terrain (hipster anomalies spawn everything underground)
  • Fixed an issue when placing objects such as the Command Center sent a warning message or pop-up window to everyone nearby instead of just the placer
  • Fixed an issue where some of Omegratron's attacks did not update player health bars (I’m not touching you!)
  • Omegatron's Orbs can no longer enter the safe zones (NSFW)
  • The resource and category select menus in the Crafting Window now close when the the Crafting Window is closed
  • Fixed an issue where players could craft the wrong items in tutorial preventing them from progressing (That’s how we learn!)

Additions and Changes

  • Players can now increase maximum science xp cap via upgrade platforms (The more I learn the more I CAN learn)
  • The Anomaly Circle effect has returned from the hidden layer to which it was accidentally banished
  • Added a healing effect when vehicles are being repaired
  • Restored the player NamePlates on MP servers (Hello, my name is Operative)
  • Extra Kit slots can now be unlocked via upgrade platforms
  • The Crafting Window is refreshed after learning a schematic. New schematics remain marked as new when closing and re-opening the Crafting Window. Selecting a schematic marks it as no longer new.
  • The quest to kill a random number of creatures now gives bonus time for each creature killed (Keep what you kill)
  • When merging stacks of items, the target stack will always stack up to the maximum allowed and any remainder will stay in the source stack
  • Creatures and other players no longer block the placement of background tiles
  • Science XP is now shown near the character's head instead of text in the lower left of the screen
  • Added Codex entries for the Penguin dungeon, DJ Penguin, and Tech Upgrades (Reading is FUNdamental)
  • The Outfitting Station now opens the Character Window when activated
  • Placeable items that can only work in a certain biome now show that on their tooltip
  • Base Mode now shows an outline around all tiles. The powered tiles are white and the unpowered tiles are dark grey.

Suit up as an operative of the Ark Corporation, sent to the farthest reaches of the universe in search of habitable planets to terraform. However, after the long space journey you awaken from cryosleep to find that your ship has gone way off course and is disabled near a strange new world. With no choice but to descend to the surface and figure out how to survive long enough to complete your mission, you step into the escape pod.

Along the way you’ll gather resources to craft armor, weapons, facilities, and vehicles to help you explore the world and conquer its aggressive inhabitants. Your base of operations will evolve from a few basic facilities exposed to the elements into a hardened fortress full of advanced technologies that let you accomplish amazing improvements to your equipment and alter the environment itself.

Be careful, though; almost everything down there wants to kill you, including fierce laser space sharks, artillery-toting polar bears, wickedly quick jetpack penguins, and even crazier horrors. Out on the Edge of Space, you must adapt or you die. Good luck, ArkCo Operative!

Key Features (Launch Version)

  • Open World Exploration– Dynamically-generated 2D sandbox set in the deepest recesses of space, explore randomly generated caverns, wormhole anomalies and dive deeper into the planet to discover valuable resources and other rare phenomenon.
  • Crazy Creatures – Hordes of enemies and epic bosses ranging from Artillabears, squid pandas, jetpack space penguins, and laser space sharks; not to mention epic bosses like DJ Penguin and Omegatron
  • Cooperative Exploration – Engrossing gameplay, built from the ground up, to support multiplayer focusing on cooperative exploration and combat with team-based tactics.
  • Advanced Crafting System - Using the power of science, craft advanced technology for weapons, gear and base constructions from basic resources
  • Loads of Armor – Ranging from stat boosting battle armor to quirky vanity costumes, craft armor to survive the changing environmental conditions and specialize in different aspects of mining, exploration, and combat.
  • Weapons – Create a wide-variety of dynamically generated weapons ranging from guided rocket launchers to Experimental Gauss Rifles and discover new advanced weaponry to expand your arsenal.
  • Research System – A new research system allows players more freedom to discover new areas of technology in exploration, combat, base building, and much more.
  • Command Center Management – Establish your central base of operation by creating the ultimate Command Center customized with defensive turrets, hangers and repair drones. Make improvements to protect yourself from the constant environmental changes like radiation storms and other anomalies.
  • PIOS (Power Input Output Systems) – A simple drag and drop tool, letting you design electrical systems as basic as powering a light or as complex as creating your own logic gates.
  • Pets – Create and collect pets that assist you on your epic exploration of space by granting defensive, offensive, or exploration perks.
  • Anomalies - Random world events both dangerous and helpful
  • Vehicles - Craft items from hover boards to massive mechs to safely explore the dangerous world
  • Terraforming - Conquer space by turning the land into a livable habitat
  • Continual Support – Regular post-launch updates will bring fresh new content

(Many features listed above are currently in the game but since we are still in Early Access some will be added in the future. Vehicles and Terraforming are among them.)

This game is one of the good examples for Early Acces. The Dev team is really nice and are very present and working with the community. Constant patches and addet content keeps making the game get better and better and i don´t regret buying into this at all. The art style, music and ambient is just awesome and everyone who like this genre should give it a try.
Even tho it got Terraria content in it it is by far not a clone and got it´s own unique feeling to it as it is more focused on action and plays more like a metroid game when it comes to progression and gunplay.
A big thumbs up from me .

TL;DR: It's an early access game with a strong foundation that needs more content, a little tweaking, and polish.

This game just had a pretty big update from what I understand. Look at your review dates, if it is dated before Nov 24th, then it's not reflecting the game in it's current state.

I'll have a more detailed review once I log more hours.
First few hours:

Cons:
-Tutorial is a little frusterating, got confused at one point and thought my progress was blocked. (Turns out I was trying to craft the wrong thing during it)
-Progress is not entirely intuitive yet.
-The gear grind is a little on the slow side.

Pro's:
-Stong basic mechanics.
-The one mini-boss fight I've been in was terrifying and fun. Tons of little critters coming after me in a cave putting out my temporary lights as they advanced. (If I didn't have the regen pack by then I probably would have died)
-Fun building mechanics (if not entirely intuitive yet)
-I made a jetpack out of dirt.

Something I'm unsure about but rates mention:
-Science xp, and these data modules: Maybe it's just because Starforge did something similar (and they did it poorly), but I'm wary of having to unlock recipies with xp and blueprints. This system could either make or break the gear progression in the game and needs to be handled well.

So, should you pick up this game now? I'm leaning towards yes. The Dev's seem dedicated and attentive to their players, and the game has a strong foundation.

In the first part of my review, I will point out, on the spot, that THIS IS NOT TERRARIA, nor will it ever be. Just as Starbound was seen as another rip-off of a loved game before it became famous, it's the same here. Terraria is less loved by the developers, and Starbound even moreso. The developers here are happy to patch any bug that would be found, in addition to being friendly and helpful, were someone to get lost or to ask for help.

The soundtrack in the game actually DOES give it the feel of Minecraft, what with the lonely venture and all, but it's not. The game [also] has a unique take on the 'RPG' aspect, with it not being the typical 'grind for hours and hours to get to the max'. No. You instead would get SP (Science Points) which are used for the creation of plenty of things, such as items to increase your skill in a specific area. SP is gained by killing things (as per RPG-like game) as well as destroying things, be it trees or some odd plant you've never seen before, though the amount varies.

Also, you remember in Terraria where you could feel safe at night, in your little cardboard underpants alongside your wooden sword? Not here. Go ahead; Try to survive the night in your first, second, or third armourset. You'll never live to see the sun! Speaking of 'living', it also has a reason NOT to die. You crash-land on some planet, as the lore goes, then you go on to set your small CryoPod up. Note, though, that even though said CryoPod keeps you from death for ten times, it doesn't mean you can waste them. It's quite a journey to craft up a small, cryogenic tube you slot into said CryoPod, which gives you one extra 'life', so-to-speak.

Of course, who could forget the tutorial? It's relatively in-depth, and it explains all you need to know to not die horribly the first time you set foot into the world. Now, with all these good things, what are the downsides? Well, the first, and probably most notable, is that the game is in Early Access/Beta, and has a plethora of features not-yet implimented (such as mercy invincibility after getting struck, which isn't as bad as you think, but can be kind of annoying), but even with that, it's still moving forward at a great pace, and, as I point out, it gets almost any and every bug patched up when said bug is first found.

Like Terraria and Starbound, but more difficult. This game requires that you base build in order to survive the monsters in the night, and to have a grid of power to build new gear or get companions. This game has a lot to through at you, even though it may not seem to be clear at first (look at the wiki for a begining guide). I have enjoyed this game greatly and I strongly recommend that you play this game.

Since I first started playing EOS I have noticed a ton of improvement. The game gets regular updates and the devs are very involved with the community here on Steam. One thing I really enjoy about EOS is the multi-leveled crafting. Each resource is needed from the start to the end, so I don't feel as though I'm waisting my time gathering dirt, mud and rock on the way to the more valuable resourses. You unlock new crafting opportunities by earning XP. With this XP you can "buy" data. The data (once you get enough) gives access to better equipment. I really like this system, I'm hoping that this is the one the devs settle on.
There are a few frustrating things about the game, such as the amount of time required to gather resourses for the equipment you need to progress. Also, much like Terraria, the player is super vulnerable at the start of the game (this can lead to much frustration for players not accustomed to this type of game). The issue I struggle with the most is the lack of direction in the game. The crafting is so much fun, but I have no idea what certain resourses are for or how some of the better equipment is crafted. If you get too lopsided with buying data from one or two catergories you will be totally lost. Make sure you unlock the data evenly to avoid any problems.
In conclusion, I totally recomend EOS. I remember being frustrated as hell when playing Terraria after it first came out, but as time went along and I slowly learned new things the game became really fun. I am 100% convinced that EOS is offering the same type of experience, who knows, maybee it will be even better than Terraria when all is said and done.

*Early Access Review* *Not final review*
This game is a 2D mining sandbox game, but it's not a generic clone of Terraria, but it does feel like a clone. First off, combat only consists of guns right now, this is quite annoying, but the amount of guns is pretty good. Crafting is very complex, you can substitute some materials for others, but this also makes the crafting system feel slow and clunky, which I hope this is fixed later on. The developers update the game VERY often, and make changes based on community feedback, like an early access game should. I recommend this game based on sheer content alone, but buyers beware, it's early access, there ARE bugs.

tl;dr: Dug up a mushroom, got Uranium; woo! Play this game, it gives Early Access a good reputation.

Every single day, this game becomes more and more appealing to play. balancing, additional content,
The averaging out of the reviews say the general feeling on this game is mixed, but the top reviews are nearly all absolutely positive,
Whereas for Starbound, the general feeling is listed as very positive, but the top reviews are nearly all absolutely negative.
Why?
Because a game that was more polished at release with less attention from the developers (Starbound) is just isn't as good as a less polished game with more developer attention (EoS). This is why Edge of Space is in my favourites and Starbound is not.
Yes, this game DOES need more everything: content, detail, variety, bug fixes, polish, et cetera. But in the same volume, it is RECIEVING what it needs! DEVELOPER ATTENTION!! It warms my heart to see devs responding to reviews and comments and implementing changes based on community feedback~!

There are, however a few small issues I can think of which would address immediate issues.
- Some method of pausing the action
- an option to reverse the scroll for the hotbar
- Beautiful as the background music is, possibly a touch more variety would be welcome
- changing the tiles the master cryopod sits on would be fantastic for base decoration.

On a side note, I purchased the standard version of the game, and then later decided to buy the special edition, but none of the special edition content shows up at all. If it hasn't been implemented properly yet, I'm willing to wait, but I just want to ensure that this isn't simply a bug.

Overall, this game truly lives up to what the developers have claimed, and is improving every day. Keep up the good work devs, you love your game and we love you for it!

I love this game. But keep in mind, t's EARLY ACCESS.
So, if you're the type to whine about not getting the updates you wanted RIGHT NOW RIGHT NOW, or about features being broken temporarily, or bugs, GO BUY A COMPLETE GAME.

The whole point of Early Access is to support the developer as they make their game, and see how it progresses.
Don't be stupid and expect a finished product. This developer is making good on promises and deserves your support.

It's a wonderful addition to the Sandbox/Crafting Genre. With good, solid gameplay and controls.
Crafting is good, and intuitive, and will only get better.
Combat isn't any more clunky than say... Terraria.
And there's tons to explore already. I have seen this game come LEAPS AND BOUNDS in terms of progress since I first purchased it, and I check back frequently with much delight.

I can't really seem to get into Signs of Life, or Darkout. I loved Terraria to death. Asteria was a waste of my time.
But this game, its style, its atmosphere, and YES there is a tutorial now, really speaks to me.
Only other crafting game I've enjoyed this much recently is Planet Explorers, which is twice the price.

For the game as it is right now is absolutely amazing, but I am a biased reviewer as I adored Terraria and liked Earthbound a hell of a lot.

I have came across very few bugs and the game is obvious when playing that it's not a finished product (I think it needs some smoothing out with some controls and actions) but I have came across very few games that achieve this calibur of early access.

Can't wait for it to be a full release with everything.

TL:DR- My rate is 8/10 for an Early Access game.

This review is based on the December 2014 version of the game. As it currently stands, it holds alot of promise, but suffers from usability problems. For example. there is nothing you can do with your old gear - when you make new equipment, you can't salvage or sell your old items that are no longer useful, you have to delete them (or store them if you're a pack rat). Also, the UI is still pretty rough - some recipe names don't match up to what they create. This is a problem when you are trying to figure out where the 'crafting bench 1' recipe is, because its actually the 'computerized work bench' recipe.

Overall its decently fun, but the clunkiness of the UI drove me to give up on figuring out what I needed to do next.

I had a bad first impression of this game earlier on in it's alpha, but after revisiting it, I was delighted to find that the game's developers are very concerned with customer satisfaction and the quality of their game, and that most of my initial grievances really don't apply anymore.

Dear readers,

I highly recommend this game, for a range of reasons. Perhaps most importantly, it is actually fun to play. I was initially dubious, since I am new to this genre of game, but, at the behest of a friend, I decided to give it a chance. I am very glad that I did, because flying (even for short distances) with a jet pack is all that I hoped it would be. I am still waiting for my real-life jet pack, universe!

As I have never played this type of game before, it took me longer than the average person (I assume) to get through the tutorial. This was not, however, because the tutorial was not well-structured. In fact, it taught me all the basics I needed to know for this game without much superfluous fluff. I just had trouble with, for instance, remembering that I could jump down platforms.

In addition, it is clear from the regular patches and updates that the developers are highly invested in making the game-play experience as bug-free and enjoyable as possible. This is the first early access game that I've purchased, and thanks to my positive experience with Edge of Space, I will be taking my chances on other early access games in the future.

Best,
CV

Updated review from my last one.

In my previous review I stated how bad this game was and how it seemed to be going nowhere. It felt amateurish and pointless. The tutorial was vague and taught very little.

That was at the beginning of the year and I recently reinstalled the game to see what was new and if things have improved. I'd like to talk about these changes after some brief gameplay:

The first impression that I got was that the tutorial is way better. They aren't always necessary for this kind of game, but before I was baffled on how to build things, now I know. Immediately you are given a gun, fairly weak, but it does the trick, whereas before there seemed no way to kill enemies other than using the mining laser on them or the plasma saw or whatever it was.

So what do I think now? Alot better, my hat is off to you guys for improving upon a royal mess. Not perfect, but still not released. At this rate of improvement I am confident, however, that things will get ironed out.

Some minor problems:

For some reason the install for a game of this type and look is enormous. 1.5 gb download and 3gb disc space. Where it all goes, I'm unsure, but as the art seems to be bitmap and bitmap has large file sizes, I'm inclined to think that it is that.

Screen tearing is quite bad.

Bloody snails pushing me around. Probably by design but annoying.

The worlds seem extremely small. Could perhaps do with you being able to go to other planets or at least make the worlds alot bigger.

Overall, my opinion has swayed. I see potential in this game and I am impressed with the improvements. Keep up the good work.
