Minor TBS Update

Hello All

Apologies on the delay with this info but we recently had a small update for Banner Saga.

  • Fixed recurring issue that sometimes caused the 'Continue' button to be unresponsive after a battle
  • Added new heraldry crests
  • Fixed some minor memory leaks

Nothing too crazy, but we found some memory things in TBS2 that we could easily bring back to TBS1 so we thought we should.

Brilliant story, mechanics, depth, and soundtracks. Just can't come up with more words that have already been used. Just when you thought turn based couldn't get any better without getting simpler in a way. Well done!

While this was a good game, I don't believe it was a great game. The combat style, while very cool and fun in the beginning, quickly plays itself out. The main problem is the lack of variety of enemies. When you are fighting a robot hoarde, it quickly becomes grindy and difficult when the variety of attacks is so limited and their vulnerabilities are nil. That is not to say I think they should have gone the route of weaknesses-to-elementals approach, but something at least to switch it up a little. The other problem I found was the difficulty curve. It goes from easy fights to nearly impossible fairly quickly. Some of the characters with the nicer special attacks come in later in the game, resulting in you having to "game" the fights to get those characters to make the final "kill-shot" to get the options for promotions. Probably, an old RPG cumulative "XP" would have been better than one character getting full credit for getting the parting killing shot off.

The final battle is especially difficult unless you have your characters really leveled up by that point. Letting you take Rook or Alette out of the mix for the whole game and then requiring that both be in your posse for the toughest battle felt rather short-sighted by the developer. That being said, since Alette had such horrible specials and was overall mediocre in combat (as well as being whiny, uninteresting, and seemed to have her mouth perpetually open like some gormless mouthbreather), I didn't use her or level her at all, and therefore, was unable to choose her as the one to use the silver arrow at the final battle. I did like that they did the widowed-father/daughter main characters, as you don't see that much in games or media in general.

Overall, it was a good game with an interesting story, but it may have been a bit too difficult and played out too long for a game that uses the same basic combat against the same basic enemies against the same basic backdrops.

The Banner Saga is a brilliant turn-based strategy game with a unique and beautiful art style. The gameplay takes a little bit to get used to, but it's very satisfying. The animations in battle are smooth and the abilities suit the characters.

The story grips you. You feel very much involved as you take on the role of a few characters and their decisions. Some decisions are incredibly hard to make, and you must face the consequences of them. Part of what makes the story so good is how well written the characters dialogue is and also the world's lore. There is a lot of detail and it really adds to the experience.

I would highly recommend The Banner Saga to anyone who enjoys interactive stories and/or good turn-based strategy games.

The story is interesting, but I feel like the gameplay is somewhat limited. I don't think the game is bad, just overpriced. I don't feel I got as much as I paid for.

If you like Turn-based RPG then you need to play this. There is not a thing I can say wrong about it. The music, the visuals, the story were all perfect. Looking forward to starting the 2nd one now.

Beautiful game with a variety of interesting characters. Some people knock the combat but I liked it enough. Game is indeed too short and could have been much more epic. I like the game enough to want to play the sequel, but not so much that I want to play it right away.

10/10 - Epic Nordic Tale With Turn-Based Combat!

This game exceeded my expectations on every front; I found it so enjoyable that immediately upon completion I purchased the sequel at almost full price. No regrets either!

The game brings together elements from several genres and magically blends them together in this Choices Matter masterpiece. The main point of interest for me was the lengthy, epic tale that unfolds as you lead your people through struggles of surviving a increasingly barren world. You trudge your army in a side scrolling fashion and frequently engage in grid turn-based combat which I love. This elements really reminds me of the combat style in the Kings Bounty series; if you liked that... You'll love this.

My first play-through took about 11 hours. I will 100% play this through again, maybe several times. Replay value = Very high! With over 25+ characters to assemble your army and hundreds of camps and towns to explore; you'll be sucked in quickly!

Overall, definitely worth the $20; grab on sale if you can but not required in my eyes! A must play for turn-based and fantasy lovers alike!

Summary of the full review:

The Banner Saga is an immensely unique, and, by no coincidence, immensely good game that combines great artistic design and robust C&C mechanics with a highly entertaining and deceptively complex battle system. The Banner Saga has only a few outright flaws; the shoddy dialogues and the constant need to click-click-click through them line by line are a blemish on an otherwise engaging narrative. Moreover, the startling lack of enemy variety and the relatively dumb AI keep the battle system from realizing its potential for true tactical greatness. The game's system of choices and consequences also has far less of an impact on the story than Stoic's PR department has been trying to claim; nonetheless, it still offers an engaging and immersive range of decisions that will directly influence your battle performance and can occasionally result in major character deaths.

I suspect that The Banner Saga will always be the subject of great controversy; it has a kind of self-assured swagger, flaunting all of its little weirdnesses and weaknesses without making much of an effort to look like a typical tactical cRPG or a typical casual story game. The game features heaps upon heaps of idiosyncratic gameplay systems, like the strange combination of a broad C&C system with a fully pre-determined linear story, the fact that you will rarely if ever be able to see a "game over" screen, the "sit back and immerse yourself" approach to map travel, and a whole slew of novel and deeply unrealistic combat mechanics. You may choose to accept or reject these mechanics according to your personal preferences; all I can tell you is that all of these elements stand in the service of a fully coherent and extremely tightly designed gameplay experience that I deeply enjoyed playing through.

Do I recommend this game?
YES, a thousand times yes.

Firstly, it's gorgeous. The art and the style are perfect.
I loved the characters, even the ones that confused me didn't feel out of place or pointless.
Gameplay is good, I like that I can relax a bit and enjoy the scenery sometimes. I wasn't overly familiar with turn-based combat, but the in-game tutorial was very helpful and after I'd settled in it stopped feeling slow/clunky.
I connected to the story, so much that I played it through twice in a few days.

Can't wait to treat myself to the next one!

Banner Saga is a beautiful, investing game, but it defiitely has its issues. If you buy items or stumble upon them you can never sell them in favor of better items, food, or to upgrade your characters instead. The game is also incredibly short, allows you to make decisions that you'd think would have severe consequences as far as the story goes but don't, and worst of all, feeding your caravan isn't necessary. You don't need them. You can just let them all starve to death and you'll be perfectly fine, and so basically you're simply spending renown for nothing.

This game is amazing. For many months I had seen this on Steam and thought "It can't be that good, not worth my money" but my god how wrong was I. This game is filled with beautiful animations for combat, thrilling and amazingly written story and realistic characters.

The game has very rich lore that unfolds without you needing to collect secrets or some kind of optional trophy. The Banner Saga combines turn-based strategy with decision making, party management and army management, where you lead a warband in a struggle to find food and combat with the threat of bandits, weather and shadey characters along the way in a truely epic journey.

The story itself throws you straight into the sad world of The Banner Saga and only builds up to a more sad and intense tale.

The art style is unique and creates a world that really comes to life.

In this review I feel I still didn't give it enough justice, just please buy this game because I feel everyone needs to experience their own story in the game, something that Telltale didn't manage to capture.
