Minor TBS Update

Hello All

Apologies on the delay with this info but we recently had a small update for Banner Saga.

  • Fixed recurring issue that sometimes caused the 'Continue' button to be unresponsive after a battle
  • Added new heraldry crests
  • Fixed some minor memory leaks

Nothing too crazy, but we found some memory things in TBS2 that we could easily bring back to TBS1 so we thought we should.

I just finished my second play-through of this game on normal difficulty and I can't wait to play some more once I pick up the sequel. I enjoyed the chess-like battles and the traveling caravan sequences were reminiscent of Oregon Trail. The Hobbit-style rotoscope animation ruled and was originally the main thing that drew me to this game. I had never seen a game made like this before so it was definitely a gem to look at. Musical score was really cinematic and went well with the tone of the story. I feel like there should've been more voice acting but maybe they made that improvement in the sequel since they have a bigger budget. It's not often that I play through an entire game twice within a month so obviously I'm recommending this.

When I first saw the Banner Saga: "Looks like a pretentious kickstarter flashgame got a little big for it's britches. Whatever, it's on sale."
After playing the Banner Saga for several hours: "IVER! NOOOOOOO!!!! Why God? WHY?" "Feed my caravan, or let them starve to level up my squad? hmmm..." "Onleiff! Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!"

But really though, this game will suck you in faster than you can possibly expect. The artwork is beautiful, the lore is unique, the story is enticingly mysterious, and while the guts of the mechanics seem pretty basic, you'll find yourself getting a lot more invested and involved than you'd expect.
If you enjoy RPGs, you shouldn't pass this up.

An excellent and original work. As a big fan of the fire emblem series, the gameplay was quite well done. I felt very at home with the strategy elements. The story and art direction (the music in particular) were great as well. This is not a complete experience, however! Those looking to see the end of the story should not assume this title will give it to you! However, as long as you're ok with a cliffhanger, I haven't seen many indie games with this much polish in a long time.

Great game. Engaging story with lots of decisions to make. It felt like a linear game when you consider that you can't decide what path you will take for your journey. The reaction of other NPCs will change with your decisions but most of the time it's your decision to take people into your caravan or not that will result in a different story progression.

By the end you will be left hanging with your sorrow. Wanting to know how this epic saga will end and intrigued of how it might continue. The sequel will give you only a little satisfaction. I hope the third game will draw to a conclusion of the story.

Easily one of my new all time favorite games. The story is powerful and epic. While you don't get to know every character as much as I might like, what you do learn makes you want to go back and replay the game with other characters to find out more, or take different paths. Fights are challenging, and your choices have serious weight to them. Did I mention the music score is amazing? I usually turn game music off, this game's music is absolutely wonderful and fitting. I bought the second game right after finishing the first, I loved this one so much. My only complaint is the game is somewhat short, I wanted to continue playing this for so much longer. On to feed my addiction on Banner Saga 2!

WOW, only about 4 hours in and I am enthralled with this game. Art, visuals, story, charaecters, and music are all breathtakingly good. This game will make you feel. The decisions really make you feel the weight of your role in the story. The combat is pretty well balanced and fun, but it's all the other little things that makes the game so amazing. I never imagined the Banner Sage would be this good. Been looking for something to drag me away from games like Fallout 4 and Witcher 3 for a while. This will be doing exactly that. Also, They really went all out with the lore. Exploring the massive map and reading the history of all the locals had me ocupied for a while. I recomend doing that if you play. Gives you some immersion, not that I wasn't already immersed.

10/10 - Epic Nordic Tale With Turn-Based Combat!

This game exceeded my expectations on every front; I found it so enjoyable that immediately upon completion I purchased the sequel at almost full price. No regrets either!

The game brings together elements from several genres and magically blends them together in this Choices Matter masterpiece. The main point of interest for me was the lengthy, epic tale that unfolds as you lead your people through struggles of surviving a increasingly barren world. You trudge your army in a side scrolling fashion and frequently engage in grid turn-based combat which I love. This elements really reminds me of the combat style in the Kings Bounty series; if you liked that... You'll love this.

My first play-through took about 11 hours. I will 100% play this through again, maybe several times. Replay value = Very high! With over 25+ characters to assemble your army and hundreds of camps and towns to explore; you'll be sucked in quickly!

Overall, definitely worth the $20; grab on sale if you can but not required in my eyes! A must play for turn-based and fantasy lovers alike!

Summary of the full review:

The Banner Saga is an immensely unique, and, by no coincidence, immensely good game that combines great artistic design and robust C&C mechanics with a highly entertaining and deceptively complex battle system. The Banner Saga has only a few outright flaws; the shoddy dialogues and the constant need to click-click-click through them line by line are a blemish on an otherwise engaging narrative. Moreover, the startling lack of enemy variety and the relatively dumb AI keep the battle system from realizing its potential for true tactical greatness. The game's system of choices and consequences also has far less of an impact on the story than Stoic's PR department has been trying to claim; nonetheless, it still offers an engaging and immersive range of decisions that will directly influence your battle performance and can occasionally result in major character deaths.

I suspect that The Banner Saga will always be the subject of great controversy; it has a kind of self-assured swagger, flaunting all of its little weirdnesses and weaknesses without making much of an effort to look like a typical tactical cRPG or a typical casual story game. The game features heaps upon heaps of idiosyncratic gameplay systems, like the strange combination of a broad C&C system with a fully pre-determined linear story, the fact that you will rarely if ever be able to see a "game over" screen, the "sit back and immerse yourself" approach to map travel, and a whole slew of novel and deeply unrealistic combat mechanics. You may choose to accept or reject these mechanics according to your personal preferences; all I can tell you is that all of these elements stand in the service of a fully coherent and extremely tightly designed gameplay experience that I deeply enjoyed playing through.

Do I recommend this game?
YES, a thousand times yes.

Firstly, it's gorgeous. The art and the style are perfect.
I loved the characters, even the ones that confused me didn't feel out of place or pointless.
Gameplay is good, I like that I can relax a bit and enjoy the scenery sometimes. I wasn't overly familiar with turn-based combat, but the in-game tutorial was very helpful and after I'd settled in it stopped feeling slow/clunky.
I connected to the story, so much that I played it through twice in a few days.

Can't wait to treat myself to the next one!

The Banner Saga is a brilliant turn-based strategy game with a unique and beautiful art style. The gameplay takes a little bit to get used to, but it's very satisfying. The animations in battle are smooth and the abilities suit the characters.

The story grips you. You feel very much involved as you take on the role of a few characters and their decisions. Some decisions are incredibly hard to make, and you must face the consequences of them. Part of what makes the story so good is how well written the characters dialogue is and also the world's lore. There is a lot of detail and it really adds to the experience.

I would highly recommend The Banner Saga to anyone who enjoys interactive stories and/or good turn-based strategy games.

You will feel the consequences of your decisions.
You will appreciate the calm uneventful travels.
You will be helped and backstabbed.
You will fear, pity, rejoice and just try to find a way.

It is a story, a good story, and you will want more.

Oh yeah, and both music and artstyle are just wonderful.

I am absolutely terrible at tactical combat, normally I avoid this kind of combat gameplay like the plague. That said, the absolutely beautiful art style and music along with the deep story was enough to compell me to try it. I do not regret it!

I had no idea what this game would be like when I got it, it was very much something purchased on a whim.
However I am so glad that I did pick it up - it is a lovingly crafted and beautiful game, with an amazingly rich setting and background.
The mechanics of both caravan management and battles are simple, yet elegant. It makes for a very rewarding game that it is geniunely fun to play.

I would heartily reccomend this game to anyone I know.

Simply one of the most beautiful games I've ever played. The music, the art, the writing, the worldbuilding, it's all flawless. The story is deep and meaningful, full of emotional weight that never feels cheap or easy. The decisions I made had a direct impact on events in the game, and I really felt for the characters that I lost.

The only issue I have is that the game is incredibly short. I'm more than happy to pay for The Banner Saga 2 - I love the game, and I'm attached to the characters and world and want to know what happens - but when the credits rolled I was a little shocked that the game was already over. I felt like I was just getting started, that the story was beginning to pick up and that I'd just hit the first major milestone in the game. But the first major milestone was the end, and now I'm forced to spend more money to play on (which, again, I'm happy to do, but I'm not a fan of this model).

Overall I'd highly recommend this - just be aware that there are only a few hours of gameplay here.

(EDIT: Having just posted this review I now see that I completed the game in 7 hours. It honestly feels a lot shorter than that. Knowing that it's longer than I remember means I'm less disappointed by the length, and more impressed by how immersed I was in this world while playing.)
