I love the Viking setting. I enjoy the story, and it certainly kept my attention. The combat has some interesting mechanics: armor break, the fact that strength is health, and some great special moves.

However, the turns and initiative are implemented in a really frustrating way that, in the end, has ruined this game for me.

First, each side gets to move one unit per turn, no matter how many units are remaining, in a fixed rotation. As enemy units are injured and lose health, they also lose the ability to deal damage. However, once they are killed, their spot in the initiative order is filled by another healthy unit. If I have 4 units remaining, but the enemy has only 2 units, then those units will each act twice as frequently as my 4 units, and they will have a distinct advantage. Sometimes I may have a couple of units across the map who have just killed their opponents, and while those two waste turns walking back to the other side, the fewer remaining enemy units that are engaged with the other half of my force will be attacking twice as often as those units near them.

Bottom line is that killing an enemy unit is generally a bad idea until the very end of the fight.

I have adjusted to this tactic, as unintuitive and frustrating as it sometimes is. Now that I have advanced sufficiently, I was able to raise the Strength of one of my favorite units to 18. Now, his key ability, the sweeping attack that hits 3 enemies, has been rendered much weaker. Many weak enemy units can be killed by a single 18 STR attack. When he had only 16 STR, he could severely injure 3 of these weak units in one blow, which was fantastic. Now, he kills them outright, and what remains are 3 stronger units that now get to attack twice as frequently.

Killing an enemy unit is a bad idea? Killing 3 of them even worse? My favorite character is too strong, and that's a tactical disadvantage?

To me, this is just a bridge too far.

Is it novel? Yes. Can you work around it? Sure. But it draws out the combat as you avoid weakened enemies and chase down the healthy ones before you start delivering the killing blow. And the longer I play this game, the less I enjoy it.

The Banner Saga is one of the best games of 2014. It it's a turn based game with beautiful art style and music that fits perfectly on a Nordic mythology themed game.

The story is progressed by choices you make which there are plenty and there are hard ones to make which was a great experience. I thing I didn't like was that the game has no voice acting which broke the flow of the game. They could have hired some great voice actors and added an options to turn them off or on if you prefered. The story is great and there's parts of the game when your not playing you will watch your caravan in the distance moving from place to place and for some people it might be boring but it's great immersion to see their journey from the distance while snow falls while there's a mountain in the background.

Some players say the last boss is hard and there's a difficulty spike but while I died about 5 times I only had 2 at max level (5), few level 4 and 3 and poor items. You have to ration the supplies or your people will leave you and you need to rest in order to gain moral. The trick part is you either buy supplies or you pay for items or you use the renown points to level up a character so you must choose wisely!

Score: 8/10

Gorgeous, interesting game with poor combat design highlighted by a flawed final boss fight.

Pros:
Beautiful game - Art design, music, and style are all incredible
Immersive and unique story

Cons:
Poor combat - teams alternate turns regardless of how many combatants there are. The result is that a small crew of powerful characters is far stronger than a full complement of soldiers. This flaw culminated in a final boss that was far more frustrating than challenging, to a degree that sucked most of the joy out of a game that is otherwise very impressive.

I would highly recommend changing the difficulty to easy before the final boss fight. Although it flips the fight from exceptionally frustrating and difficult to laughably easy, you will enjoy the end of the story much more if you skip the pain.

Great mix between combat and story sequences. At first combat seems to be on the shallow side but quickly open up into a more in depth system as you unlock more characters. A shame that its quite short!

Definitely worth it if you're looking for a story driven strategy game that mainly consist of decision making and turned based combat. I'm really impressed by how detailed and rich the universe seems to be as well as how hooked I got by the story.

Though it took a chapter or two to get into the story and understand who signified as "you" I was deeply immersed into the story and couldn't stop playing.
Every choice you make feels like it mattered and despite the fact that i'm not into the turn based strategy games learn't quite quickly and found myself enjoying the chess-like battles.

story 10/10
decisions has drastic consequences 10/10

The only one that sucks, the 2D makes hard sometimes to drag a character to some places.

An evil threatens the land and you must lead your people to safety, but your choices mean more than you may think. Simple dialogue options will change the outcome of your party and effect options down the line. An intricate battle system leads to victory or to pain. Will you be able to save your people?

PROS:
  • A very intricate and fun battle system (when you learn how to use it)
  • Beautiful graphics
  • Amazing music and SFX and voiceovers
  • Controls are easy to understand/options laid out well

CONS:
  • If you don't take time to learn the battle system it's very frustrating
  • Travel becomes tedious
  • Dialogue options are vague/don't know until you try
  • Couple boss battles are a B! Try until you get them right...

Overall, it's an excellent game. I absolutely hated combat until one of the devs came by my stream and gave me some advice, then I absolutely LOVED the combat. I was just playing it wrong! This shone some light on the negatives of travel and how tedious it was. Also how dialogue was very vague. This aside, you will enjoy your time in Banner Saga and want to learn more about the where the enemy came from (there's a sequel!)

A beautiful game aesthetically, interesting world and characters as well. I like the turn based combat, so have to be careful who you move where and think about where enemies might move on their turn. Highly recommend it, loved it!

I feel the weight of my decisions in this game more than my real life choices.

10/10 would prioritize this game more than my social life.

TL;DR:

Get this game if you like slow paced turn based gameplay with a LOT of reading throughout the game, and only on sale because it is way too overpriced.

My Thoughts:

Great story and charming graphics. Mechanics are fine.

If you can play slow paced games without being bored to death, you'll probably like the game.

Unfortunately I'm not one of those people, and don't really wanna spend 95% of the game just reading text. I just rushed the game because it was so boring.

The game story is not very long but there is a bit of replay value, since depending on the choices you make you will find different stuff during the game.

Conclusion:

This can be a great game with an amazing story for a few people, that this game really targets and was obviously made for, but personally I'd say the game is just UNDER average and definitely overpriced.

The Banner Saga made me better at roguelikes.

Seriously though, I play a lot of roguelikes, and after playing the Banner Saga, I feel better at them. You develop a real relationship with the characters on the screen, play in a combat system that rewards both daring and tactics, and learn that the characters you play as may not always be with you. Carrying that mentality over, it steels you against death, and you can blaze through impermenance with a Nordic furor.

This is an amazing game.

A very solid, very tough strategy game with deep upgrade options and items, and an absolutely killer storyline so far.

Choices you make along the way feels like they really carry weight behind them. Do you choose to save the village or attempt to pickup enough supplies to last during the exodus? Some characters may die and just be gone for the rest of the game, upgrades and all, this can happen via story driven event or during battle.

The combat has very little RNG. Armor and strength determine the damage you can do and take. When the attack you can do does less than the target's armor there's a 10% chance of failure for each point of difference. Enemies and characters literally get weaker as they take more damage.

I can't wait to see what else Banner Saga has instore and play Banner Saga 2!
