I liked this much better than the other Supergiant games. It was really relaxing and I can't get the music out of my head.

It was a bit short however.

simply put.. if you played bastion (which you should) and loved it (why wouldn't you?) you will love this
the story telling in these games is brilliant and very well thought out that it feels like a real art form.
the only thing i miss from the bastion in this was the combat style.
while transistor's combat style is nice.. it's just not actiony and fast paced as bastion felt
also the game doesn't do a good job explaining the skills that you unlock. however it's not that hard to figure out.

a very enjoyable game. 7/10

Good click and run, you can either play the game using the time stopper or challenge yourself with just playing it as real time. Allows hundreds of mix and match of skills to fits your play style. Music is soothing and relaxing to something different to many of the games now a days.

Transistor is a really great game! 10/10 would recommend! I would also recommend to get it when it's on sale (not sure if I'd spend the full $20 on this game).

It's not too short and not too long of a game (I beat it in 16.5 hours of gameplay, and that's with me trying to explore and do extra stuff). The story is alright, the graphics were great, the customizations and turn-based battle mechanic were really fun to play around with, but what I loved most were characters! Red and the Transistor are so good together, and Red is just plain awesome (even if she doesn't talk). Spoiler: Ughhh, the ending though D: It was so sad... No one wins

In any case, for those that like lists/don't like paragraphs:

Pros:
  • Great graphics
  • Fun gameplay mechanics that are highly customizable and pretty easy to grasp
  • Cool main characters
  • The Transistor's/Logan Cunningham's voice is sooo smooth
  • Red's/Ashley Barrett's singing

Cons:
  • The characters were kind of flat---everyone had a role and stuck to it. It doesn't make the game or story bad, but it's something to keep in mind.
  • I felt kinda disconnected from the side characters/traces. You can read about them once you play around with the skills, but I dunno... maybe you're not really supposed to know them/like or dislike any of them.
  • It takes a while to level. I'm not sure if you get to keep your stats and stuff for future playthroughs since I'm writing this after my first and only playthrough, but it took a while for me to level (maybe because I was unwilling to equip a lot of limiters)

Amount played: 18 hours spent completing the game twice (normal playthrough and new game plus) and unlocking all 33 achievements.

Pros:
+Futuristic sci-fi setting and art style
+Great soundtrack ("old-world electronic post-rock" with Ashley Lynn Barrett, the singer from Bastion, making a return)
+Good voice acting (Logan Cunningham, the narrator from Bastion, returns to voice the Transistor)
+Combat can be in real-time or turn-based (with a preference on the latter)
+Transistor (a talking sword that can be fitted with up to four active functions, each of the active functions can be fitted with up to two upgrade functions, and you can use up to four passive functions--confusing to explain but makes for a very open-ended way to play and experiment with different combinations)
+New game plus (skills and progression carry over into a new game)

Cons:
-A bit harder to get into than Bastion
-Main storyline is rather short
-Story is a bit vague and confusing
-Tutorial could be more in depth

This game doesn't know whether it wants to be turn-based or real time and succeeds at only making both completely frustrating. Every encounter feels like walking from one to another in a long hallway. Ultimately a boring and frustrating experience. Skip the game and listen to the soundtrack instead.

After playing Bastion I was really looking forward to this one, and I was not disappointed. Supergiant games has become one of my favorite developers pretty fast, each game they release is a little gem. This one has charming graphics in a steampunk setting, with a compelling soundtrack that makes it a really atmospheric experience.

The plot may be a little cryptic at first, but when you start grasping what's going on it becomes a great story, poignant and a little sad, with a bittersweet ending that's kinda open (if you don't like ambigous endings, beware).

Like Bastion, the mix of great storytelling, intricate world building and a charismatic narrator would be enough to make it an enjoyable experience, but on top of that it also has a clever gameplay, when you enter a battle there are dozens of possible weapon combinations that makes it super fun to battle the cutest villains ever, and impossible to get bored.

There are also test arenas to just challenge yourself and try to get all those tough achievements, and I dare say you won't mind replaying it several times. A world like that, with a Transistor with a sexy voice keeping you company along the way? Count me in.

I can clearly see why people love this game, but it's most certainly not for me. None of the game's aspects appeal to me. The combat gets repetitive very quickly, there's not much of a story, although the art style is without a doubt beautiful and the music is very romantic but I think both don't fit the cyberpunk sci-fi theme the game is going for, the gameplay basics are poorly explained and once I understood it I didn't like it, the narrator's voice is distracting (I wish he'd stop talking because he never has anything interesting to say). I want to like this game (maybe I will once I push through it to get all the Steam achievements), but as for now I don't understand how this game got this high score. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=604119983 http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=689115748

Amazing...
I would say this is the ultimate experience indie games could give.
Nowadays people think great games have great graphics and fast-paced gameplay.
Transistor really stands up against this fad with its own unique gameplay and atmosphere.
I enjoyed this game and went full support to the makers.
Definitely going to buy that sound track for myself.

My Review:

Graphics : The artwork blends into the atmosphere almost as if it was meant to be. Some parts are unclear(paths) but the GUI is outstanding and straight-forward. You can easily grasp this game and how it should be played.

Sound : The most beautiful sountracks to be inside a game. Really makes up the Red character. Even if you hate the game you won't hate the music on this game. I would say sound is the most captivating feature of this game.

Gameplay : Unique. Supports various strategy for your own taste. Though there are some dominant strategies.

Leveling : Although they tried to differentiate the difficulty via 'limiters' you can easily win in most levels. I feel some levels are harder than others, but it's not organized in chronological order. (Should be easier at first and harder later)

Atmosphere : Amazing scenergy by the graphics and sound. You WILL blend into the atmosphere.

Story : The reference in the games are amazing. The whole idea built over a transistor is very well supported in the story. Although there are some things that feel leftout, definitely well-made.

What an amazing game! You basically have to replay in order to really "beat" it, but it was possibly more enjoyable the 2nd time. I really loved the whole experience, and I highly recommend it. Now I guess I'll have to go play Bastion and whatever other game this company comes out with in the future :0)

A beautiful game with amazing music. The gameplay is somewhat strategy-based, having you pause the game and make moves in advance and then play them in super speed. I feel that it gets a little repetitive, my strategy is to plan out my moves, execute them, and then run around screaming until everything becomes usable again, repeat. The story is pretty interesting, and at the same time confusing. The main character doesn't ever talk, supposedly because their voice was stolen, but they don't really explain that. The main character also apperently knows the main bad guys, but once again I am confused. I can't really tell if the main character has been fighting against these bad guys for a while or just a day.

TL;DR Would reccommend if you like action-strategy, as long as you don't mind a few story hiccups.

Transistor操作以即時戰略為主
比起Bastion而言更容易上手

因為是ARPG 重點在於技能樹的系統
各種技能可以混合使用 產生更驚人的效果!

雖然國外評論一致認為整體表現比不上Bastion
但是對我來說 音樂跟美術設計依然是水準之上
尤其是soundtrack 當初遊戲出來...
我是先去youtube聽一遍原聲帶後才入手遊戲的XD

Transistor is one of those rare, beautiful indie gem of an ARPG that every gamer should have played, even at least once. The game is developed by the people behind Bastion, but the 2 games have very few similarities, it's hard to compare them. Every aspect of Transistor is flawless, for now, no cons come to my mind. But I will try to review what I can.

Pros:
  • Stunning sci-fi cyberpunk art style and setting
  • Amazing voice acting
  • Wonderful, atmospheric soundtrack, one of the best I've heard in an indie game (purchasing the OST is very much worth it)
  • Interesting and creative character designs (I can't go into detail here, might spoil it)
  • All the things I have mentioned above go together so well to create the rich, detailed world of Cloudbank
  • Innovative combat: you can switch from hack-n'-slash mode to a strategic, turn-based one, and you should still plan your moves very well
  • Game has a way of letting you figure out the story and lore on your own: if you skip any OVCs, you'll barely have an idea of what's going on, and you'll lessen the great experience
  • (Trying to avoid spoilers as much as I can here) The story is memorable, and leaves you at some moments in suspense, and other moments just thinking about what just happened - it is unique and far from those 'good vs evil' cliché RPG plots
  • Lots of ways to customize your character build as well: you can combine up to 3 moves or 'Functions' and test how they work, you can add 'Limiters' that increase the challenge lvl but yield more rewards, etc
  • Game is also strategic in a way that you should plan your battles well

Cons:
  • Game is linear and does not have too much room for exploration
  • The story can be too short, and even vague for some people

Overall Rating:
9/10 - Transistor is more of an experience to me, than a game.

Surprisingly deep strategy game with beautiful art.
Along with charming Red, our female protagonist, we trying to figure out circumstances of recent events. Wandering in mysterious city you step by step discover details of plot, vivid life story of other citizens and enemies features. Want to emphasize how brilliantly the process of discovering tie to combat system. Want to find out more - use different strategies or overcome difficulties. But don’t be afraid, game is not hardcore. Playthrough took about 10-12 hours with my slow pace. Final leaves warm feelings about whole game.

Product received for free
I received Transistor as a part of a between-friends Secret Santa gift swap and it took me around five and a half hours to get to the end once. I used the Xbox 360 controller the whole time.

A singer without a voice and a talking sword. This duo has a front-row seat for what looks like the end of the world... Transistor should feel familiar to those who played Bastion before since it too is an action RPG with an isometric angle. Instead of landmasses floating in the sky, the setting is a city in the process of uncontrolled change. And instead of a young man with an ever-growing arsenal of weapons, our heroine instead drags the titular Transistor behind her, and she uses that for a variety of attacks.

"Red, we're not gonna get away with this, are we?" is the line that starts the game, spoken by the sword sticking out of a man to the woman standing over the two. No backstory, no introductory cutscene, just this scene and cutting to gameplay as she takes the sword with her. The sword knows where to go, so you move on...and then the cubes come and with them, enemies. You start with two attacks and four slots to put them in to start, and you get more attacks through the story and as you level up.

Combat's interesting because of the "Turn()" feature. You can fight enemies in real time, but Red is no warrior and several attacks have windup times that leave her open. Using Turn() stops time and allows you to queue movement and attacks that eat up your "planning" bar. When you confirm your setup, Red will zip along and do all of the attacks at lightning speed as the enemies move at a snail's pace. The tradeoff is that then you can't use any attacks until the planning bar refills, though you can move. Red only has one movement speed, so using Turn() to approach, strike, and retreat is always a good idea.

Another neat thing about the combat is how your unused attacks can buff your other attacks or even Red herself. Crash() is one of the starting moves, a basic melee-range attack that can stun enemies. Applying it as an upgrade to another move makes that move stun. Applying it as a passive reduces the damage Red takes as well as renders her immune to slowdown. You eventually unlock two upgrade slots for your attacks and four passives for Red, but you have to mind the MEM limit taken up by your powers, each of which eats 1 to 4 MEM. There are quite a few combinations to try out, and you can get interesting combos like a ranged AoE that charms and poisons anything it hits, or a summon that spawns two helpers that slowly heal you.

Another interesting thing is that all of the powers are tied to character bios and you unlock information as you use the power in the active, upgrade, and passive slots, though this is completely optional. You get some background info as well as circumstances leading to their disappearances in the wake of the chaos going on, so the game indirectly pushes you to try new combinations. The game also takes a different approach to lives. You have a health bar that naturally depletes as you get hurt, and when it empties, you get fully recovered at the cost of losing access to the move that used the most MEM, and it won't come back until you visit a few save points. Lose all four of your set powers and game over.

I really liked the game's visual style, art deco mixed with digital aesthetic, giving it a weird retro-futuristic vibe. The enemies are mostly white robotic constructs that attack you with lasers, there are white cubes that pop up to show an upcoming fight and to be used as cover, and you drag a big green sword behind you that looks a bit like a circuit board (which also leaves behind circuity sparks as you move). The game feels like it could take place entirely in cyberspace, especially considering some of the prompts (finding the Transistor stuck in the man's chest reads "User: Logged Out"), but it's left ambiguous. The music is great too, though I really took notice in a couple of places that play songs that Red wrote and performed in-universe, like "The Spine" playing when fighting the first Younglady at the big poster or "In Circles" gradually getting corrupted during the first boss fight. Given Red is currently mute, the Transistor makes comments about the situation or the things you interact with. I know the narrator in Bastion was pretty love it or hate it, but I didn't mind him and I never would've guessed it was the same guy voicing both characters.

As far as difficulty went, I found the game on the easy side, but that might've been due to the power combinations I used or prior experience with these kinds of games. YMMV of course, but I only lost my health to the first boss once and the last one twice, though I came close a few other times. If you know what you're doing and have a good setup of powers, you can probably handle anything. The game slowly introduces you to new mooks to fight and their upgrades, at least. The game is pretty short, as in, "one night of gaming" short. It doesn't overstay its welcome, but I honestly wanted more. There are optional challenges that give you a preset list of powers and tasks you with a mission such as "survive for 90 seconds" or "kill all enemies in one Turn()". There's a New Game Plus feature where you go back through the story, fighting mooks in their strongest forms, and you can opt into the Limiters you unlock by leveling up which increase the enemy's powers in exchange for you getting more EXP out of fights, to the maximum level of 30. You get another set of the same powers you earned the first time through, so you can really mix things up on the second loop.

Short but sweet. Transistor is a bit more than just Bastion: Cyberpunk, but those familiar with Bastion should find this a great fit. It's pretty light on the RPG even though you level up, as you don't allocate stats and the biggest choices are which of the options you go for when you level up, not that you permanently lose anything you skipped. It's pretty appealing for those who like customizing since there are 16 powers and you can combine any unique power together twice, so there are a lot of combinations to try out--and the game tracks which ones you've used at that! Kinda wish the story was longer, but it wraps itself up nicely even if it's short. There's some replay value but a lot of it comes from the optional challenges or just trying new combos to decimate your foes.

You'd probably like this one.

Transistor is one of the most enjoyable and captivating games I have ever played.
The art and music are beatiful.
The combat is challenging, as long as you want it to be, and combines turn based and real time combat very well.
The story is not just handed to the player, it unfolds along with the conditions of the world.

Enjoyable game, great soundtrack and awesome art direction. Only possible criticism is how short the story is, and I wouldn't say I sped through it - though I did miss a few collectibles and didn't bother with much of the side-challenges. Great customization options for making a build, the limiters providing an interesting adjustable difficulty.

Highly recommend Transistor and I'd suggest giving it a go when you've an evening where you can commit to playing it from start to finish!

This game is bloody amazing. I didn't get into Bastion, somehow, though from what I've heard it was also a great game. But Transistor I know is great. My playtime is a bit low since I mostly played the game on PS4, and there I'm halfway NG+.

The combat system is extremely interesting and original. One thing is the timestopping feature (or something more like "planning phase", to be exact) combined with how the damage works. But the really amazing part is how there are multiple clever combinations of abilities and skills, and even modifiers to make the enemies stronger. It'll take a whole playthrough to just find out all of them, and figuring out how they work together, and with the difficulty scaling up just fine, you're bound to have a good time. While I could praise the combat system forever, that wouldn't make a very interesting review. So just know that it's awesome. The only bad thing really was that there were just a few skill combinations that made the game feel a bit too easy. But that kind of thing exists almost everywhere, really, and it definitely wasn't enough to make the system feel flawed at all.

The voice acting was nice (and while this has nothing to do with the Steam version, it was just SO COOL to hear the Transistor's voice from your controller... It was like you were really carrying the thing!), as was the atmosphere — the feeling of being alone was only emphasized by the fact the only voice you ever heard was, well, a sword. The storytelling was interesting, too; facts being revealed in a nice, slow pace to keep things shrouded in a mystery, to be revealed slowly, bit by bit, through various means.

That's what I have to say for now. Amazing job.

also the end was hhgdfsghdfgh kri evri tim/5 well done

As most steam players, I was caught up in my library.
I would stare at my game list, as hours and hours passed, until I finally was inspired to do something "else."

My first moments in Transistor were skeptacle. After so many hours staring at my game library, I couldn't believe that a game could offer me the satisfaction I was looking for.

I thought this was an entirely tactics-based game - I was wong. This is an action packed game with a strategic function akin to fallout 3. The art style and level setup in this game is truly masterful.

The combo system for "functions" is amazing. I love being able to combine my "Switch()" move with my "Load()" move. Each move (as an upgrade, passive, or active skill) has its own charm. The combinations are fun to explore and really add to the overall experience.

"Limitors" are a way to make the game harder (and more fun). By adding "limitors" you add to the enemy difficulty and experience bonus after each battle. It's really rewarding and fun.

I don't know why I didn't play this game early.
It's really a great game with a driving plotline and replayability.

I rarely play games that are this good. Seriously. This game is so good that it instantly jumped into the list of my favorite games.
The setting is amazing and very unique.
Art is mesmerizing and consistent. Soundtrack works like a superglue between ears and headphones as well as between story and gameplay.
Combat system is nothing like I've played before in the best way possible.
Variety of skills and upgrades is virtually limitless.
Story is nothing short of astonishing. Story ending 10/10.
Adjust the difficulty any way you like using 10 different limiters in any combination.
Replay as many times as you want using recursion. This starts new game with all the skills (functions) and upgrades from previous play-through.
Challenge yourself in 5 different types of tests.

I usually write longer reviews but decided to write short one this time so anyone who reads will spend less time reading and more time playing it.

The art, music, story and setting of this game is great! Super Giant games always has great art direction, writing and music. Red is such a compelling character and I want to find out what happened in the city the moment the game starts.

I did not like the gameplay as much as Bastion, due to my persona preference of action rather than strategy, but that's not a major detractor for the whole experience.

Highly recommend, Super Giant games are always great experiences.

This analysis essay criticizes the vagueness of the plot and character details in Supergiant Games' otherwise magnificent game Transistor.

[. . .] It would be boring for me to simply say that Supergiant Games' Transistor is a gorgeous-looking, wonderfully designed, mechanically fun, and brilliantly soundtracked title, even though all of that is true. It would be less boring, I feel, to discuss the one area of the game that I am inclined to critique: Transistor's plot. [. . .]

In Transistor, you play as the silent starlet and singer Red, traversing the eerily empty yet colourful city of Cloudbank. The city is slowly being overtaken by a mysterious force known only as the Process, and Cloudbank's leaders have something to do with it. Desperate to put a stop to whatever's happening, Red goes out to hunt -- but not alone. She carries a sword-like contraption with her known as the Transistor, whose dulcet and heartfelt tones guide her (and you) through a decaying world...

Pros
+ Beautiful, mesmerizing art & visuals
+ The Transistor's narration of the game
+ The dreamy, cyber-like soundtrack
+ Combining functions for cool attack abilities
+ The overall emotional impact

Cons
- Combat can get a bit repetitive
- The main story could have been longer & more in-depth
- Some story elements are left deliberately vague

This one of the most beautiful & artful games I've ever played! The overall cyberpunkish atmosphere, the gorgeous artwork, the hauntingly loving voice of the Transistor... The game has story elements that are quite familiar in the sci-fi sphere, but its execution is just so good. I fell in love with Red, the Transistor, and their world in a little over five hours already, and bawled my eyes out at certain points during the story. The emotional pacing, aided by the superb soundtrack, was fantastic.

The upsides of this game far outweigh any downsides -- which for me personally, were the slightly repetitive combat (mostly due to lots of the same enemy types, I think) and the fact that the first run-through of the story was not longer, meatier & more in-depth.

Like sci-fi, strategical planning in combat (on pause), and a deeply emotional story? Then this one's for you. This game is a perfect little jewel, with my compliments to Logan Cunningham's excellent voice acting as the Transistor.

Great music, nice gameplay, good story, and amazing artwork. It's a bit short, but I would recommend when on sale.

This game was special all right. It had me captivated for weeks after finishing it. The gameplay, story, music and the art style are all blended seamlessly into this dreamlike experience.

If you like art nouveau or humming songs, this is for you.

Is it worth the full price? Yes definitely. It is a unique experience with decent replay value and that alone is more than worth the price.
Still sceptical? Wait for a sale.
You are in for a nice ride and it would be a shame to miss out on that.
