What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We are a small studio, while we have the ambition, we do not have the resources to simple finish the game and release with all the promised features. Early Access allows us to have the financial resources to finish the product while at the same time allow players to help us figure out and solve problems in design and execution.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“This game should reach a final release candidate by around mid-2016.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The final version will be a smooth experience that allows players to build and share entire game worlds through the world editor. The main game storyline will be complete with many new animations to draw the player into the world.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“We are in beta.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“No, it will be the same price.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We listen to all the comments posted on the Steam boards and our own message board, we do not agree with all the suggestions, but we do consider them. If there are very good suggestions, they do make it into the game.”

About This Game

In Planet Explorers, it is the year 2287, one of the first colony ships sent out by Earth arrives at the planet Maria, in the Epsilon Indi Star System. During its landing sequence, something appears in front of the massive ship that causes it to lose control and crash into the planet. Some of the colonists survive in lifeboats, but what they find is an unforgiving land filled with creatures ready to outlast the visitors from Earth. Now the survivors must explorer, gather, build, create, fight, and ultimately, build a new home.

Game Modes

Planet Explorers will feature single and multiplayer modes.

In single player there are 3 distinct selections

  • Story Mode – Story mode is the main meat and bones of the game, it is the action-adventure-rpg-somewhat-4X segment, offering npcs, missions, colony building, farming, ranching, training, diplomacy, and of course, a storyline that you can follow or ignore. This story features a 17X8km world map with many unique character, landscapes, biomes, locations, and over 100 types of potential enemies. Even though we’ve made it seem like a very action oriented game in the trailers, in reality, players can choose to not fight so much as to just plant a farm, make some food, keep the colonists alive, negotiate with the sentient aliens, and defend the perimeter from the local life forms. That can still eventually arrive at the ending. And yes, there is an ending. Story mode also features coop with other players.

  • Adventure Mode – This mode is based on a procedural map generated from a seed. Currently, it comes in a 40X40 kilometer map. Players will be able to complete random missions, defeat bosses, and explore different landscapes in the mode and eventually be able to setup conditions that they want to play (such as tower defense or attack an alien camp). This mode will also feature survival gameplay. The randomization in this mode will eventually pull in player made objects and locations so that a world will always feature something new and unique.

  • Build Mode – In this mode, there are no enemies and an infinite amount of building material. It also currently comes in a 40X40km map. Players will be able to build whatever they want in this mode, including everything in the Creations Editor. Think of this as the perfect testing ground to test everything you build. Or…it’s your place to build your garden without ever worrying about the pesky aliens.

Multiplayer allows Local Area Network and player hosted servers. It features several modes but some are still on the drawing board or going through technical trials so the final result is still in flux. Players playing multiplayer should be able to bring at least one of their created objects into multiplayer games, be it a sword, gun, or vehicle.

  • Coop – Coop comes in many selections, such as adventure mode, tower defense mode, build mode, etc. This is pretty much an open world sandbox with a max of 32 players (this number still needs to be stress tested).

  • Versus – This mode allows teams of up to 16 players to battle against 16 players from another team. We allow full terrain manipulation in this mode. Currently, it's a point based system where one team wins if they reach a certain point level based on kills, built objects, resources mined, etc.

Around a year and a half ago I gave this game a negative review, which I felt was honest and accurate at the time due to the lack of progress and multiple missed deadlines by Pathea during early development.

Because of the recent beta release, I am happy to be able to change my review to positive.

There are still issues in the game, especially with melee combat controls, but generally the game is enjoyable and the developers seem to have learned from past mistakes.

I have only been playing story mode in single player since beta, so I can't comment on multiplayer functionality, but for me the game is currently worth the money and probably one of the best voxel based survival games available on early access.

The quest system in story mode, ISO creation system and lack of zombies makes for a refreshing change to standard “cookie cutter” survival games that have flooded the market in recent years.

Has a good amount of depth. I haven't had time to get into every nook and cranny of the game but am happy so far with it. Haven't run into any bugs so far. Mining, gathering, crafting, it's all there.

I thought I had reviewed this already... huh. Anyway this game is in development so there are some UI tweaks and bugs to fix but the core thing itself - is a thing of wonder.

You start off wondering what the hell just happened and why the blaze you just crashed a spaceship and don't have any weapons other than, quite literally, a small plastic knife. Pretty soon you're collecting plants, digging, chopping trees, running to or from alien animals, doing busy-body work for various NPCs for 'recipes' for new things to make like armour or weapons or circuit boards.

Then you find yourself making a cute little house somewhere and you've built yourself a little aircraft in the shape of something not safe for work, realised that doesn't fly well enough to even get off the ground without flipping upside down, so you then attempt to build something that is both hilarious and practical. You can sculpt a bow out of gold while your companions use lasers because arrows are cheap and then you find yourself on the run from bears that shoot actual fireballs until you realise you can totally just build a little tower to stand on like a boss while you plunk at them with arrows.

Then you're building up a small colony and assigning jobs because you've been unofficially made Mayor and thus you build yourself the nicest home while your poor colonists get open space living with as many beds as you can cram into one big room and they're doing your farming for you now and fighting various random animals and running into the ocean shooting alien seagulls and every time you think "Okay this is everything now" it keeps getting bigger.

So you make another bow in the shape of [censored] that can one shot giant space beetles and realise you haven't even explored the other biomes yet so you make a flying shopping trolley that puts any followers into the baby seat and trolley off to parts unknown.

11/10 would humiliate Rol again.

Honestly? The game is great I don't expect much for the early state of the game, they have so much to do before they can call it complete though. It's worth buying and playing with friends I'm still enjoying myself.

Alright, I had this game a pretty long time during development, and I have to say, something just doesn't feel polished about it. It isn't that the art is bad, it's not. It's not that the interfaces are ugly, they're not. It's that everything feels somewhat clunky. I dig in the dirt with a pick, and it shapes the polygons oddly. Combat feels a bit off. Interacting with things feels a bit off.

To summarize, when you try an action and results are consistently not as you expect, that's what defines clunky.

Also it really could do with a lighting engine of some kind. Nothing like digging underground and having it be like daylight. Makes you wonder why your helmet has a light on it.

I know it's not quite finished, but as it gets nearer 1.0 I just feel like the clunky parts of it are here to stay.

The controls are bad. Very bad. I did not make it out of the tutorial, it was so frustrating.

To mouselook, you have to hold the right mouse button. Through some playng with the options, I was able to get the mouselook to follow the cursor, but then the robot interrupted with more instructions and it stopped. Then it I entered build mode and was forced into 3rd person camera. I give up.

I only have 14 hours on record here but ive played it for well over a 100 hours on a "different" copy. Around last year when they were adding the large content patches and changing the entire system I bought 3 copies for myself and two friends. I still think this game has a ways to go but from this point on i can deffinitly reccomend it. The devs have continued to work hard on it even after setbacks. Never giving up and leaving this as abandon ware. Buy it. Play it.

If your interested in other building or space games I suggest checking into Starmade also. They offer a demo version (completly unlocked and working version. They've been giving it away for free til it hits release) that you can try out to see if you like it.

TL;DR buy it. great game. the devs deserve it.

There seems to be a horde of crafting/voxel based/survival games coming out or in early access, so some quick bullet points on how Planet Explorers differentiates itself from the others I've played.

  • The "ISO" system. When crafting guns, armor, swords, shields, vehicles...well, anything really, you have the option to slap down a few base parts and basically design your own 3d model of the item from the materials you choose. Very easy to make basic items of your own, and you can download other peoples creations that they've chosen to share. Someone willing to put in the time and effort can make some very nice looking items.
  • Building a colony. Constructing the buildings, recruiting colonists, handing out jobs and keeping them fed--I found it very satisfying, much moreso than other survival games where the only person you're responsible is yourself.
  • Getting around is quite enjoyable. The maps can be quite large, but they seem much smaller when you have tools like gliders, jet packs, parachutes, grappling hooks...and let's not forget your fighter jet or helicopter (or mech or speeder bike), either. This is a low gravity world, as well, which has its own amusements.

As of beta 0.2 the game has come together nicely, and become easily one of my favorites of the genre. All features appear to be working and are of (at least) average quality, with some in the above-average-to-exceptional range. There are still some hiccups (poor documentation on how to do certain things, for instance) but more or less exactly what you would expect from a beta. I have very little experience in multiplayer (aside from snagging some talented player's ISO's) so i can't comment on that.

I reccomend this game with no reservations.

Playing with friends sucks. The configuration sucks. The customization is a really cool aspect, but no matter your design for swords/armour, or how cool or intricate you make it, the vanilla armour blows it away. If I can say anything, it's that the development on this game went backwards, throwing it into the bin of "Meh" games.

this game is very fun. However, there are a lot of bugs in the story mode (to be expected as its still in beta), the adventure mode is good to learn how to play, and once the story mode has a lot of its wrinkles ironed out, it too will be great. Would recommend to anyone who enjoys supporting early access games and knows what they are going to end up getting.

So I put a decent amount of time into this game and these are my thoughts on the game.

- The ISO system
The ISO system is easy to use you pick some base parts (like gun barrels and handles.) and put the materials you pull out of the ground onto them to create new and personalised weapons vehicles and aircraft.

- Adventure Mode
The Adventure Mode is the sandbox mode essentially and you get dropped onto a randomly generated world that can be fairly large with just the basics and you can do anything from there.

-Story Mode
From what I played they have an interesting allbeit cliche story. The background information and the landmass you play on are both plentiful and interesting. They added a lot more since the last time i played and I am genuinely excited to play it.

-Build mode
This mode gives you all the equipment all the materials and is just for testing ISOs. No AI spawn which is unfortunate because i would like to test my weaponry to see if they work well or not and build a huge colony.

-Multiplayer
I have only played Multiplayer a handful of times it seems pretty well fleshed out it plays like Adventure mode but has other players in it.

All in all I enjoy the game and will continue to play it in the coming years. This game is still in early access and still needs work done so while playing I recommend not looking at the bugs to hard and to make note of them and let the Devs know.

Tired of the simplicity of Minecraft and sick of waiting for Starbound? Sick of Zombies and tired of Bambi killers but still want to survive and thrive? I know I was, and boy am I glad I stumbled onto this. I feel like I may have passed it over in the past because of bad reviews but as they had recently taken an upturn I decided to give it a shot.

Now I can't speak to the multiplayer aspect (As it's in alpha I can only assume it's sketchy at best, but that's to be expected.) but the single player is excellent, the story (which I'm only a few missions into since I jumped right into adventure mode at the start) has been interesting so far.

Here's a few aspects that make me want to play this over minecraft clones:

Need creature parts but tired of running around hunting? Set up some turrets and throw down a creature lure.
Tired of running everywhere? Build a rudimentary vehicle and ride into the sunset.
Ten story creature? Grab allies, outfit them with whatever you can find/buy/create yourself, make turrets, tanks and Take. It. Down.

I'm only twelve hours in and have barely done more than get iron weapons, a few turrets, and dug a few really impressive tunnels (Which I was way more proud of than anything I ever built in minecraft.) and made a few rudimentary shelters to keep the rain off my head (which didn't work, it is [or was when I wrote this] an alpha.). You can also build gods-know-what in the creation engine which is far too daunting for me to even touch at the moment, or if creating from scratch isn't your thing I'm sure you'll be able to download untold numbers of things others have created via steam in the future (Or now sans-steam with a little know-how).

All in all you should keep an eye on this one, and if you have the extra cash go ahead and buy it.

I first got the game when it was very, VERY early access - and honestly, there wasn't much to it then and it needed a lot of polishing. I decided to give it time. I recently picked it back up, and can confidently say it is much better now! Honestly, I really am waiting for more NPC polishing to give the world extra flavour, because there are so few good survival/building/exploration games which focuses on the sense of community between survivors. I would love to see that better implmented in Planet Explorers, and it seems that is just what is planned!

This game is amazing if you like building stuff and modding because the best part of the game is the "voxel creater" where you can build or download and install custome creations super easily I love this game.

Beta update has changed this game a lot, but there's still a long road for Planet Explorers. I think developers are working too slow for improving this game. Expensive, but still worth to play. There aren't many games like this.

Well.... I bought this here planet explorers approximately ages ago. It had a solid concept with solid foundations in place when I bought it, and now, it has become a game well and truly worth having.
PRO's:
* Voxel creation system for weapons, vehicles, decor and armour: Pretty mad....
* Build system, build anywhere anytime within a large area where unlike other survival build games you dont have to be 2 metres from where you place... Need a bridge in a hurry? No worries! planet explorers has it covered. Need a watchtower to snipe stuff? No worries same applies.
* Still in beta. much more to come I'm sure.
CONS':
* Still in beta. much more to come I'm sure.
* Early game mining is realisticly tedious. : /
* Main menu music is annoying. yeah they fixed that one. music theme is so (muchly so) better.

all in all I rate a "You should buy this game/10"
Nice work devs. Love your work.

Lots of potential, and so far the devs seem committed to finishing and polishing this game.
Not sure if it's worth $28 CAD as of this review but it's definitely a must-buy if it's on sale.
