What the developers have to say:

“Planet Explorers is an open world RPG for its single player mode, as in there's a storyline with an ending. The game is in alpha, there will be bugs and strange things that we can't explain. Since it's an RPG, there will be more bugs than other games of the voxel type. Also due to the RPG nature, each main update will be spaced by about a month. But due to the decent size of our team, each update will contain a lot of content. We do listen very closely to our players, so you will have an opportunity to impact the direction of the game.”

A0.9 Progress Update: World Editor

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K79sBhWSl9E

Hope you still remember the World Editor we post a couple weeks ago. Today, we’ll show you more details about it with a video. To remind you, World Editor is one of the major things we’re working on for a0.9. It is a program that enables you to launch and edit a world map in the editor, or import maps from other editors such as World Machine. The main tools we’re going to introduce today are different brushes, auxiliary tools and the artifact, a kind of voxel brush that players can generate and share. One thing that we haven’t finished is that editor UI, so there are lots of empty icons, that will be fixed later. We’re still incorporating the Story and Mission editors into the world editor, so we’ll show those later.

A0.85 and A0.9 Progress Update

Another progress update on a0.85 and a0.9. Some (probably most, heh) of you are wondering why the current update is taking so long, let me clear that up first. Currently, we have most of our programmers reworking/working on several key system, including the UI, AI behavior, World Editor, and Player Skill/Animation systems. All of these are major systems and won't be done until a0.9, but they do impede on our current progress on a0.85. For example, we have the character deformation system done, but since the UI system is still being worked on, the deformation system doesn't have a working UI, so it's inclusion in a0.85 was uncertain until a week ago. Now we're pretty sure it'll be in since that part of the UI's done. A0.85 is also a major art asset update, so we're waiting on some new scene assets to be done.

We have been doing some efficiency work as well, trying to get the frame rate of the game higher. One of the largest improvements so far is with AI collision detection. It used to be that we would update the collision detection of every ragdoll collider within an AI body at every frame, now we're only updating the collision of the capsule collider surrounding the AI every few frames. What this means for you is an uptick of about 10+ fps depending on your setup.

Finally, here are some screenshots of the Adventure map procedural improvements, the current canyons look a lot better and we've added stone bridges over the waterways. We're also working on multiple layers of water next as well as better sloping river banks and better town setups (no more flat towns). All of that we're trying to get into a0.85 in the next couple of weeks.

About This Game

In Planet Explorers, it is the year 2287, one of the first colony ships sent out by Earth arrives at the planet Maria, in the Epsilon Indi Star System. During its landing sequence, something appears in front of the massive ship that causes it to lose control and crash into the planet. Some of the colonists survive in lifeboats, but what they find is an unforgiving land filled with creatures ready to outlast the visitors from Earth. Now the survivors must explorer, gather, build, create, fight, and ultimately, build a new home.

Game Modes

Planet Explorers will feature single and multiplayer modes.

In single player there are 3 distinct selections

  • Story Mode – Story mode is the main meat and bones of the game, it is the action-adventure-rpg-somewhat-4X segment, offering npcs, missions, colony building, farming, ranching, training, diplomacy, and of course, a storyline that you can follow or ignore. This story features a 17X8km world map with many unique character, landscapes, biomes, locations, and over 100 types of potential enemies. Even though we’ve made it seem like a very action oriented game in the trailers, in reality, players can choose to not fight so much as to just plant a farm, make some food, keep the colonists alive, negotiate with the sentient aliens, and defend the perimeter from the local life forms. That can still eventually arrive at the ending. And yes, there is an ending.

  • Adventure Mode – This mode is based on a procedural map generated from a seed. Currently, it comes in a 40X40 kilometer map. Players will be able to complete random missions, defeat bosses, and explore different landscapes in the mode and eventually be able to setup conditions that they want to play (such as tower defense or attack an alien camp). This mode will also feature survival gameplay. The randomization in this mode will eventually pull in player made objects and locations so that a world will always feature something new and unique.

  • Build Mode – In this mode, there are no enemies and an infinite amount of building material. It also currently comes in a 40X40km map. Players will be able to build whatever they want in this mode, including everything in the Creations Editor. Think of this as the perfect testing ground to test everything you build. Or…it’s your place to build your garden without ever worrying about the pesky aliens.

Multiplayer allows Local Area Network and player hosted servers. It features several modes but some are still on the drawing board or going through technical trials so the final result is still in flux. Players playing multiplayer should be able to bring at least one of their created objects into multiplayer games, be it a sword, gun, or vehicle.

  • Coop – Coop comes in many selections, such as adventure mode, tower defense mode, build mode, etc. This is pretty much an open world sandbox with a max of 32 players (this number still needs to be stress tested).

  • Versus – This mode allows teams of up to 16 players to battle against 16 players from another team. We allow full terrain manipulation in this mode. Currently, it's a point based system where one team wins if they reach a certain point level based on kills, built objects, resources mined, etc.

Hi

This game got me captivated from the start, making the long grinding normally associated with sandbox games, a bit easier and faster, without taking

anything away from the genre. Harvesting and collecting resources is still a grind, as it should be, but just much easier feel to it.

The next thing that really got me, is the very unique creation system. Yeah, you can take parts of a car, connect it with material of your choice, just

the way you want, and if physics permit, it will go. You will tripple your normal game time just playing with this, and it is not limited to cars, but

motorcycles, VTOLs, aircraft, boats, weapons, armours, buildings.... just about anything you can build in game, you can first create and paint in the

creation system.

Now, all the game modes is not implimented yet, and there is a lot of bugs still, it is early access afterall, but it is already a great find and the

single player story line is as captivating and immersive, even better than some AAA games. If I could add a double recommend, I would.

My life its to short to wait XD and planet explorers is the game i was waiting for, even if the game is on alpha state, have a little bugs but, trust me when i said i am having a lot of fun i cant believe it, they give me a game of full sandbox you can create everything you need even a sword, Car, helicopters, tanks, even ships. I enjoy passing the time with my friends in the game XD, today we make a test of how its possible to make a Air deploy with parachutes, and the test was really good. they need to fix the bug than when you leave your air vehicle this sudenly lost poder and fall off and explode... i am just wating for the next update, they said they are going to add the Map editor and finally the Skills and levels... what game give you the oportunity to create everything with your imagination, you can create your own map, vahicle, armor, weapons etc. except the animals or NPC i dont know if they are going to go that far. But FOR ME THIS GAME IS PLAYABLE EVEN IN THIS STATE AND IS AWESOME.

Very interesting game. Nice RPG mood to it, but the controls leave alot to be desired, and the camera clipping is really horrid. a FPS view would be awesome!

After playing loads of Terraria, I was looking for something similar in 3D.
Therefore I decided to try Planet Explorers, Fortress Craft Evolved, Space Engineers, and Starforge.
Unfortunately I haven't tried Minecraft.

Planet Explorers is already very content rich and focused very much on crafting.
There are tons of different materials, many recipies come in different assembly possibilities (meaning you can craft the same item with different base-items).
Crafting a base/colony and protecting it with automated systems is part of gameplay.
You can build vehicles, design own items (like vehicles, weapons, housing) for fast crafting in the gameworld in an easy-to-use editor.
There is currently a single-player-only story mode, which is fun to play and introduces you step by step into the different concepts of the game, while providing an interesting story.

Multiplayer allows you to define your world. You can choose between Game Modes "Build" and "Adventure" - giving you different access to ressources (Build - as much as you can carry), recipies, and quests. This is combined with 3 different Game Types "Cooperativ", "VS", and "Survival". The difference between these types are how Teams are created for PVP. While in Cooperative, there is only one team, Survival offers no teams - everybody for themself, VS allows you to choose up to 4 teams.
This is combined with two options: infinite ressources and play with/without monsters.
In adventure mode - npcs offer random quests but with no story on the bigger scale.

In multiplayer you are currently limited to 3 character slots.
The character customisation is not yet very broad at the moment - but seems to be work in progress.

Another cool feature are the different monsters - ranging from very little to really huge.
With this the game gets a little the feeling of Final Fantasy.

Great visuals, good gameplay (some bugs, but it is Early Access so... ), just lack people to play, and maybe more interesting quests. Overall for an Early Access Game I give a 7/10. Recommended!

Now I want to say that this is a tentative yes to suggesting this game. I love this game, personally, and have found hours of fun just digging and crafting and learning. However: I cannot stress enough that this is an early access game. There's still not a whole lot of content, there are a multitude of bugs, there are some frustrating elements about the gameplay, but overall if you're OK with playing a game still in development then I retract my tentative nature.

The creatures are diverse and interesting, and worlds are colorful and BIG, the technology is a steady advance from swords to pistols to rifles to RPGs. The colonizing element is a lot of fun, the building is something I find unique and more user-creative than other games out there. Normally I get bored with these games after about two hours, but I'm still finding stuff to do here. The gameplay is also relatively stable, I've found a few fatal bugs but nothing that makes gameplay impossible.

Pro:
- Open world
- Active development
- Active community
- Can share and download things your create
- Multiplayer is fun

Cons:
- Huge distances to cover on foot early in single player game.
- AI is not the best, path finding needs work.
- Lack of terrain tools to work with.

Over all PE is a fun and enjoyable experience, however some frustrations come up when NPC get stuck and you have to walk a half mile back to get them. Crafting is great and you can download creations that other players have made easily. If you are looking for an open world, good single player story, base building, resource gathering game, then PE is for you.

Awesome game is because of the story line. the focus of the devs is multiplayer etc and it feels like they have just added on the campaign because it was a good idea at the time. The devs don't realise they are sitting on the next evolutionary step in gaming..

This game is epic because of the story.. It could be the next step, the next Oblivion.. It could be better if they focus on story and a campaign rather than drag it out with multiplayer..

There are so many crap multi player builder games out there ..the only difference is in this game it has a fairly interesting story that sets it apart from the other games and Devs don't get it yet.. and they have nailed building..

Bugs.. everywhere.. that's why I have so many hours up.. starting again and again.. but it's awesome so that's cool.. The pain of waiting for updates and the story getting shafted instead isn't cool at all..

This game is Early Access.. just get the dam thing..

I hate early access games. I think that whilst the principle is nice, it's far too tempting for devs to take the money and not deliver on their promises. But this game has interested me from the time I first saw it. I've been looking for a good survival and crafting experience that doesn't rely on multiplayer and all the griefers that come with it. This game offers that in what is already an impressive array of single player and co-op experiences.
Yes it is still noticeably alpha in some areas but the important things all work well and the graphics are good for a game of this type. I'm still discovering new creatures and elements and it sounds like there will be more added by the time it's finished. Building and crafting is very simple and intuitive. I was impressed that the story mode had at least some voice acting, hopefully they finish it off for all the quests and maybe add more than just the 2 or 3 soundtracks they've got.
But yes looking at the other games offering similar experiences I am satisfied that at the moment this one offers the best experience for those who want an exploration game without forced multiplayer. The direction it's heading at the moment it seems it will end up as a combination of Elder Scrolls, DayZ and Minecraft, blending them all together for something unique.
Obligatory throw away line: "It's like skyrim with aliens - 10/10"

I don't often make reviews when it comes to games but in this case a lot of the review read like a twelve year old nutcase, I appoligise if your a twelve year old nutcase but well you just admitted it to yourself (Small win/ Big breakthrough for you. Now you can work on being less of a dillhole). So the question your after is, is this game good? well im glad you asked yes but it has many buts. So lets get this out of the way i both own and like minecraft and many, many other voxel/ survival games and i have logged way to many hours into all of them. So id like to say if your thinking this is minecraft 2.0 or some dead in a month mmo your outa luck, does it resemble both? sure as long as by both mean it share mining and crafting but hell even farmville has that crap. Expect to work it out all in an hour and your gonna be disapointed. Im still in story mode and i have to say if your creative this game will own your soul. Want a motor cycle with cannons? awesome. But better is if you need it now and cant muster the talent yourself there are plenty online that will make you feel the shame of your cruddy inventions. 50 damage on your first gun woot, Wait till you make your own. I could go through an itemised list of the cool, the crappy and the yet to come but serriously have patience see for yourself and if you like making your new world better than your real one well kiss your family goodbye cause planet explorers beckons.

It has some good game features but its too expensive for a game that resembles a browser game and lacks a compelling story line. Its the sort of game that has you cut down a tree and leaves you wondering what to do next or whats the actual point of this game?

If you enjoy rpg sandboxes it might be worth a try if you are willing to fork out £20.
