What the developers have to say:

“Planet Explorers is an open world RPG for its single player mode, as in there's a storyline with an ending. The game is in alpha, there will be bugs and strange things that we can't explain. Since it's an RPG, there will be more bugs than other games of the voxel type. Also due to the RPG nature, each main update will be spaced by about a month. But due to the decent size of our team, each update will contain a lot of content. We do listen very closely to our players, so you will have an opportunity to impact the direction of the game.”

A0.85 and A0.9 Progress Update

Another progress update on a0.85 and a0.9. Some (probably most, heh) of you are wondering why the current update is taking so long, let me clear that up first. Currently, we have most of our programmers reworking/working on several key system, including the UI, AI behavior, World Editor, and Player Skill/Animation systems. All of these are major systems and won't be done until a0.9, but they do impede on our current progress on a0.85. For example, we have the character deformation system done, but since the UI system is still being worked on, the deformation system doesn't have a working UI, so it's inclusion in a0.85 was uncertain until a week ago. Now we're pretty sure it'll be in since that part of the UI's done. A0.85 is also a major art asset update, so we're waiting on some new scene assets to be done.

We have been doing some efficiency work as well, trying to get the frame rate of the game higher. One of the largest improvements so far is with AI collision detection. It used to be that we would update the collision detection of every ragdoll collider within an AI body at every frame, now we're only updating the collision of the capsule collider surrounding the AI every few frames. What this means for you is an uptick of about 10+ fps depending on your setup.

Finally, here are some screenshots of the Adventure map procedural improvements, the current canyons look a lot better and we've added stone bridges over the waterways. We're also working on multiple layers of water next as well as better sloping river banks and better town setups (no more flat towns). All of that we're trying to get into a0.85 in the next couple of weeks.

A0.85 Update: New Bosses and animals

We’ve been working on a lot of assets for the coming a0.85 build, including lots of new animals and bosses. Most of them are from the swamp and mountain biomes. For a0.85, we’re trying to get the basic animations for these creatures into the game, as well as most of their attacks. We’re trying to get several hundred enemy hit animations done as well, but they might take a while. Here are a few concept arts:

About This Game

In Planet Explorers, it is the year 2287, one of the first colony ships sent out by Earth arrives at the planet Maria, in the Epsilon Indi Star System. During its landing sequence, something appears in front of the massive ship that causes it to lose control and crash into the planet. Some of the colonists survive in lifeboats, but what they find is an unforgiving land filled with creatures ready to outlast the visitors from Earth. Now the survivors must explorer, gather, build, create, fight, and ultimately, build a new home.

Game Modes

Planet Explorers will feature single and multiplayer modes.

In single player there are 3 distinct selections

  • Story Mode – Story mode is the main meat and bones of the game, it is the action-adventure-rpg-somewhat-4X segment, offering npcs, missions, colony building, farming, ranching, training, diplomacy, and of course, a storyline that you can follow or ignore. This story features a 17X8km world map with many unique character, landscapes, biomes, locations, and over 100 types of potential enemies. Even though we’ve made it seem like a very action oriented game in the trailers, in reality, players can choose to not fight so much as to just plant a farm, make some food, keep the colonists alive, negotiate with the sentient aliens, and defend the perimeter from the local life forms. That can still eventually arrive at the ending. And yes, there is an ending.

  • Adventure Mode – This mode is based on a procedural map generated from a seed. Currently, it comes in a 40X40 kilometer map. Players will be able to complete random missions, defeat bosses, and explore different landscapes in the mode and eventually be able to setup conditions that they want to play (such as tower defense or attack an alien camp). This mode will also feature survival gameplay. The randomization in this mode will eventually pull in player made objects and locations so that a world will always feature something new and unique.

  • Build Mode – In this mode, there are no enemies and an infinite amount of building material. It also currently comes in a 40X40km map. Players will be able to build whatever they want in this mode, including everything in the Creations Editor. Think of this as the perfect testing ground to test everything you build. Or…it’s your place to build your garden without ever worrying about the pesky aliens.

Multiplayer allows Local Area Network and player hosted servers. It features several modes but some are still on the drawing board or going through technical trials so the final result is still in flux. Players playing multiplayer should be able to bring at least one of their created objects into multiplayer games, be it a sword, gun, or vehicle.

  • Coop – Coop comes in many selections, such as adventure mode, tower defense mode, build mode, etc. This is pretty much an open world sandbox with a max of 32 players (this number still needs to be stress tested).

  • Versus – This mode allows teams of up to 16 players to battle against 16 players from another team. We allow full terrain manipulation in this mode. Currently, it's a point based system where one team wins if they reach a certain point level based on kills, built objects, resources mined, etc.

I have gotten way more gameplay out of this game in its alpha phase than I have in many other finished games. The worlds here can be massive, the creation options are only limited by ones imagination, and the potential for further game development is endless. The devs are active, updates are steady and useful, and there's already a ton of user content available. The coming addition of the world editor adds further customization options. It's all pretty exciting... hitching a ride in the development process is groovy. This game and Prison Architect have generated a ton of goodwill from me directed towards Early Access.

Highlights for me so far include:

- Exploring certain luminous areas at night. The flora and night sky can be striking.
- Building a massive base in a cave system
- Learning to use the jetpack... and sometimes going SPLAT
- Building some crazy/interesting/useful community ISO items, like a VW bus, great weapons, and the Millennium Falcon
- Running into the Giant Robot once or twice and getting absolutely (and humorously) destroyed

Now, I would say that this sort of gameplay has to be your thing... not everyone is going to dig it. Mining and gathering can get a little tedious. Harvesting plants is sometimes a large pain. And like any alpha, there are some bugs (though I've not had any real problems), and things are going to need to be fixed as development continues. But the potential... stacked on to what's already here... is, again, pretty exciting.

If you like rpgs, sandboxing, exploration, creation and all that jazz, this game could be a great fit. And there's still much, much more to be added to the game, so the potential is limitless. I can't wait to see where the game goes in the future. I hope to be playing it for years.

One of the best games I have played that has to do with surviving, hunting, and crafting.

Do you like jetpacks, gliders, parachutes? Cars, Helicoptors, Boats? All kinds of guns from using bullets to energy? Making monorail trains even? Then you got to get this game.

Comparing this game to other games out there, like Minecraft or Terraria/Starbound, this game is like those but plays even better, and with better graphics. Not to mention, you can either go for co-operative survival, or free-for-all/secretive teaming survival like you would in a game like Day Z. I should also mention, this game allows you to create your own items/vehicles that can be used anywhere in the game!

I very highly recommend this game to anyone who has played any of the mentioned simular games to this, I bet you'll love it, no doubt.

Writing as of a0.9
This is definitely an early access game. It is nowhere near completion, but is definitly worth keeping an eye on. It may cost a bit much for what it is currently, but if it keeps getting updated and the developers put time into it, it could be an amazing game.

I have only played a few moments of this game so far and I must admit I enjoy it very much! It's beautiful and the customization options are completely limitless! The fact that the worlds are massive and there is a multiplayer system only adds to the justice of the innovation.
I cannot see what depths I have to brave and what animals I have to slay in order to make my way in the randomized worlds. :)

Planet Explorer's is a good game, much better than other Early Access Titles - I know I'm kinda against those but I took a risk one more time with Planet Explorer's and boy did it ever pay off.

Pros:

+ The Creation System allows for a wide-range of creativity even at the current A0.84 Patch. You can already ride and create vehicles, swords, guns, and some other objects with the Voxel Creation System. In addition to the creation system there is a "Standard" Selection of items you can make or buy if you have the resources. Unfortunately Vehicles are custom jobs only but you can d/l some from the budding library of multiplayer workshop items.

+ The Game has really great detail, my system from 2009 can barely handle it at fastest graphics but it's obvious that with a better machine it would look much better than most anything I've seen.

+ Those who follow my activity thinking know I concentrate on 2 things when it comes to games, Tools, and Crafting, this game has a stellar crafting system in SP and MP it has that potentional but - more on that in the cons section.

+ The Game has a definite level of challenge that will make it not overly difficult but certainly not too easy to found and run your own colony.

+ The Bulk of the completed game by the devs own words is in Single Player Story-mode to date. I play more of the "unfinished" Adventure Mode which tbph is like taking Sim City and Molding it into a FPS Prospective. There is third-person and free camera modes, and some weapons do fire "Over-the-shoulder" already but I've pressed the "1st Person View" key more times than I can count and it's still not resulted in seeing through my character at this point - must be in development that part.

+ The Technology range is massive - For future explorer's you can make some pretty primitive and very advanced stuff.

+ Multiplayer seems like it might be fun if I could get my personal situation to work.

Cons:

- Multiplayer is highly underdeveloped, I think they're putting it in last tbph. There's more single player content than MP *at this point*, this is promised to change according to the devs and I wait to see if that is resolved correctly or like so many other games in a haste that wastes the games multiplayer.

- Multiplayer (for me) doesn't allow creation of uploads for some reason. The Creation system works fine in editor mode but when I try to upload an ISO to the server it kinda hangs and tells me "try something else".

- Naturally there's bugs, but hey it's still in Alpha Stage so that's pretty normal. I can see strides being made with the previous patches (which I wasn't around for but got the benefit of) and I wonder where it will lead.

Finally I saved the most "neutral" thing and imo the "best" thing about the game for last.

+/- The Game is unfinished, and from all accounts the devs listen to those who are playing the alpha when they speak. Unfinished doesn't refer to a lack of quality, but the presence of potential. As you all know potential is very hard to find in games that force you to do it "their way", I see at this stage atleast the ability to make a great game, but it's not quite finished yet. I was going to reserve judgement until after it made Beta Stage but I decided to review it anyway to let you know this might be a great investment, and pretty low risk if you like the idea of creating your own objectives/world/objects/stuff.

This is quite a nice game, even for Early Release. It is very pretty and in build mode you can do just about everything. The ISO creation system is fun to work with and fairly easy to get the hang of. You can design just about any vehicle, sword, or other weapon you can think of to have fun with. I have not played them but Adventure and Story mode also seem to have much to offer if that is what you are looking for.

The game does have some issues with lag and charactar control but the dev team seems to be working on the game and are good about keeping players informed about what they are doing and where they are going. I can reccomend this game very highly even though it is still EA.

Hi

This game got me captivated from the start, making the long grinding normally associated with sandbox games, a bit easier and faster, without taking

anything away from the genre. Harvesting and collecting resources is still a grind, as it should be, but just much easier feel to it.

The next thing that really got me, is the very unique creation system. Yeah, you can take parts of a car, connect it with material of your choice, just

the way you want, and if physics permit, it will go. You will tripple your normal game time just playing with this, and it is not limited to cars, but

motorcycles, VTOLs, aircraft, boats, weapons, armours, buildings.... just about anything you can build in game, you can first create and paint in the

creation system.

Now, all the game modes is not implimented yet, and there is a lot of bugs still, it is early access afterall, but it is already a great find and the

single player story line is as captivating and immersive, even better than some AAA games. If I could add a double recommend, I would.

My life its to short to wait XD and planet explorers is the game i was waiting for, even if the game is on alpha state, have a little bugs but, trust me when i said i am having a lot of fun i cant believe it, they give me a game of full sandbox you can create everything you need even a sword, Car, helicopters, tanks, even ships. I enjoy passing the time with my friends in the game XD, today we make a test of how its possible to make a Air deploy with parachutes, and the test was really good. they need to fix the bug than when you leave your air vehicle this sudenly lost poder and fall off and explode... i am just wating for the next update, they said they are going to add the Map editor and finally the Skills and levels... what game give you the oportunity to create everything with your imagination, you can create your own map, vahicle, armor, weapons etc. except the animals or NPC i dont know if they are going to go that far. But FOR ME THIS GAME IS PLAYABLE EVEN IN THIS STATE AND IS AWESOME.

I was initially looking forward to this game, but after buying it I was quickly dissapointed. Clearly there's been a lack of effort put in, and the animation quality is not the best. on top of that even playing with my brand new ocmputer on a gtx 850 I had signifigant framerate drops down to 10fps. Maybe if they patch it up in the future and make it run better i will have a better view on it. But for now planet explorers is a broken game to me.

First Impressions:

A fairly in-depth open world builder that's easy to get into. Crafting couldn't be easier (thankfully) as everything you need to craft an item is listed right in front of you. There are still some bugs (sleeping doesn't seem to restore stamina, etc.) to contend with, but overall I'm having a blast exploring this new realm.
