What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We are a small studio, while we have the ambition, we do not have the resources to simple finish the game and release with all the promised features. Early Access allows us to have the financial resources to finish the product while at the same time allow players to help us figure out and solve problems in design and execution.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“This game should reach a final release candidate by around mid-2016.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The final version will be a smooth experience that allows players to build and share entire game worlds through the world editor. The main game storyline will be complete with many new animations to draw the player into the world.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“We are at the end of the alpha cycle and will be starting in beta soon.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes, the final game will be priced a little bit higher.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We listen to all the comments posted on the Steam boards and our own message board, we do not agree with all the suggestions, but we do consider them. If there are very good suggestions, they do make it into the game.”

A0.97 Released !

We’re getting ever closer to the beta build. We are currently aiming to get into beta on July 18th and have the final build by mid to late August. In this current build, we’ve finished up the mainline storyline, you can go all the way from start to finish. It’s not polished yet, so for the people waiting to get into the story, please wait a bit more. We’re still adding in bits and pieces of the side quests.

For the next build, the focus for us is to better lead players into the game. We’re finding that a lot of players have little idea what to do once in the game, so they never get to the point of actually discovering all the systems. We see too many telling us that the game doesn’t have much content, which has us doing a lot of head scratching. Another major thing we’re work on is the linking up of the comfort, strength, animation speed, weapon weight, weapon types, armor types (and perhaps temperature) systems, this will solve several problems that you guys have mentioned before, such as players not using all the weapons and armor or jumping directly to the one with the most ATK or HP. We are also adding more code for NPC behavior when in battle, such as maybe a follower with a start up knife shouldn’t be waving it at a giant robot.

Here’s a new poster, once we hit beta, this will become the new image for the game on Steam.

About This Game

In Planet Explorers, it is the year 2287, one of the first colony ships sent out by Earth arrives at the planet Maria, in the Epsilon Indi Star System. During its landing sequence, something appears in front of the massive ship that causes it to lose control and crash into the planet. Some of the colonists survive in lifeboats, but what they find is an unforgiving land filled with creatures ready to outlast the visitors from Earth. Now the survivors must explorer, gather, build, create, fight, and ultimately, build a new home.

Game Modes

Planet Explorers will feature single and multiplayer modes.

In single player there are 3 distinct selections

  • Story Mode – Story mode is the main meat and bones of the game, it is the action-adventure-rpg-somewhat-4X segment, offering npcs, missions, colony building, farming, ranching, training, diplomacy, and of course, a storyline that you can follow or ignore. This story features a 17X8km world map with many unique character, landscapes, biomes, locations, and over 100 types of potential enemies. Even though we’ve made it seem like a very action oriented game in the trailers, in reality, players can choose to not fight so much as to just plant a farm, make some food, keep the colonists alive, negotiate with the sentient aliens, and defend the perimeter from the local life forms. That can still eventually arrive at the ending. And yes, there is an ending. Story mode also features coop with other players.

  • Adventure Mode – This mode is based on a procedural map generated from a seed. Currently, it comes in a 40X40 kilometer map. Players will be able to complete random missions, defeat bosses, and explore different landscapes in the mode and eventually be able to setup conditions that they want to play (such as tower defense or attack an alien camp). This mode will also feature survival gameplay. The randomization in this mode will eventually pull in player made objects and locations so that a world will always feature something new and unique.

  • Build Mode – In this mode, there are no enemies and an infinite amount of building material. It also currently comes in a 40X40km map. Players will be able to build whatever they want in this mode, including everything in the Creations Editor. Think of this as the perfect testing ground to test everything you build. Or…it’s your place to build your garden without ever worrying about the pesky aliens.

Multiplayer allows Local Area Network and player hosted servers. It features several modes but some are still on the drawing board or going through technical trials so the final result is still in flux. Players playing multiplayer should be able to bring at least one of their created objects into multiplayer games, be it a sword, gun, or vehicle.

  • Coop – Coop comes in many selections, such as adventure mode, tower defense mode, build mode, etc. This is pretty much an open world sandbox with a max of 32 players (this number still needs to be stress tested).

  • Versus – This mode allows teams of up to 16 players to battle against 16 players from another team. We allow full terrain manipulation in this mode. Currently, it's a point based system where one team wins if they reach a certain point level based on kills, built objects, resources mined, etc.

As much as I like the visuals and the overall game play it has a serious glitch in that you cannot cut trees. I have been waiting months for this to be fixed and after opening game today you still cannot perform this basic function. What more is that there is no information on this that actual solves the problem. If someone knows a work around let me know.

So I supported this on kick starter. I haven't been able to even play it, it went on idle on my computer for 25 hours, then it crashes and won't work. The game has potential, but at its current state its way to buggy to play.

Building a base, a vehicle, or anything cool like that... Give it up. I couldn't even figure out how to create a custom sword with that confusing mess of a crafting menu. I gave the random gen world a shot, and was attacked by a rocket launching laser shooting OPed UFO within mins of the world loading. I had a stupid blue sword.

Could this be a good game? Yes. Is this a good game? No. I would suggest you NOT buy THIS game, and instead look into one of the following: 7 Days to Die, Empyrion - Galactic Survival, or Space Engineers. Cause, they did it right.

So I put a decent amount of time into this game and these are my thoughts on the game.

- The ISO system
The ISO system is easy to use you pick some base parts (like gun barrels and handles.) and put the materials you pull out of the ground onto them to create new and personalised weapons vehicles and aircraft.

- Adventure Mode
The Adventure Mode is the sandbox mode essentially and you get dropped onto a randomly generated world that can be fairly large with just the basics and you can do anything from there.

-Story Mode
From what I played they have an interesting allbeit cliche story. The background information and the landmass you play on are both plentiful and interesting. They added a lot more since the last time i played and I am genuinely excited to play it.

-Build mode
This mode gives you all the equipment all the materials and is just for testing ISOs. No AI spawn which is unfortunate because i would like to test my weaponry to see if they work well or not and build a huge colony.

-Multiplayer
I have only played Multiplayer a handful of times it seems pretty well fleshed out it plays like Adventure mode but has other players in it.

All in all I enjoy the game and will continue to play it in the coming years. This game is still in early access and still needs work done so while playing I recommend not looking at the bugs to hard and to make note of them and let the Devs know.

This game is amazing if you like building stuff and modding because the best part of the game is the "voxel creater" where you can build or download and install custome creations super easily I love this game.

The game's pretty rough around the edges, definitely still in Alpha. It might still be worth a shot but it tends to crash 2-3 times an hour. Disappointing for something that was released over two years ago but could be something to watch for if it passes out of Early Release.

Lots of potential, and so far the devs seem committed to finishing and polishing this game.
Not sure if it's worth $28 CAD as of this review but it's definitely a must-buy if it's on sale.

Open ended sandbox, storyline exploration crafting game. Build a base, populate and grow it. Make weapons, vehicles etc. Explore the world and search for resources such as ores and plants that are found in certain terrains, then use them to craft everything you need based on schematics you earn or buy from npc's.

What it does right, it does very right. What it does wrong, is horrifically bad.

You can craft almost anything you can imagine. Guns, vehicles, buildings, etc. You make them. All of them. There are very few premades available in the game so you must make what you want or find the plans another player made. If you are creative, you can make almost anything. If you aren't and don't find other players plans, you shouldn't bother with this game. A year ago, there were numerous ISO's for everything you could imagine, but now there are very few since updates have broken previous ISO's and creators stopped making and updating them.

Vehicles include cars, bikes, planes, helicopters, boats, submarines, etc. They all share one thing in common. Movement with them sucks. Real bad. Helicopters can't seem to fly above the trees and that would be fine if they didn't get stuck on the trees if you hit one. The ground is so uneven that any ground transport bounces all over the place and hits everything in sight, or just flat out gets destroyed from bouncing and hitting the ground constantly. Turning vehicles is not as easy as you would think and often times hitting an object, backing up turning, then turning more going forward still results in you hitting the exact same object. Vehicles can get stuck on the ground, on the plants, on rocks, etc. Most areas of the map are actually faster to walk through than attempt to use a vehicle. Drive into anything and your vehicle gets damaged. Park near a predator and they will attack your vehicle until it is destroyed or they die. Fly a helicopter into a flying creature you didn't see because of lag and who knows, maybe it stalls and you drop to the ground and die while your helicopter blows up into pieces and leaves you stranded there.

The map is a limited use abstract with very little details but does allow fast movement between discovered points. The scanner map shows you more of the terrain, but is very difficult to decipher if you are looking for ore and quickly becomes useless if you are digging into a ore vein since it clutters up rapidly.

Lighting is almost useless since personal lights point directly forward with no means to use them to light up areas above, below or to the side of the character.

NPC ai is getting better but followers still get stuck on terrain sometimes and can easily be lost when you are crossing a long distance.

Combat is very basic with melee attack only or manually shooting a weapon.

Most quests are easily completed but some hunting quests give you only a name of a creature that is useless if you haven't been playing long enough to figure out what the different creatures are. Some creatures for hunting quests are also difficult to find since they can be very rare creatures or travel around a lot.

Updates are fairly slow in coming, but progress has been significant in the last year. Crashes still happen fairly often but autosave keeps you from losing more than a couple minutes of progress so they are a minor problem.

Overall, the potential for this game is great, but it does need more work to be really enjoyable. Mostly the vehicle controls and ground smoothing hamper the game at this point. When it takes forever to walk from known areas to new mission areas, it gets tedious fast when you know a vehicle would be faster, but are so not worth the trouble to use.

EDIT: I have played over 100 hours before this game came onto Steam.

Sigh. Where do I start.
The game has a cool world.
I challenge you to find a game that has worse control mechanics then this one.
See how many games are in my library? This one takes top prize for just having a clunky control scheme.
Nothing is streamlined like it could be.
You know how long I have been waiting for the enemies to actually react to damage.
About 2 yrs. ABOUT TWO YEARS!
Almost every update is very minor and takes forever.
Before purchassing take a look at the updates and what they actually did.
Game is an ABSOLUTE TRAGEDY.

I have bought quite a few Early Access games and it is a lot like the stock market, some wins (Kerbal Space program) and some losses (Star Forge). This is a game I had played and enjoyed, but put away for a while to let it mature. While I havent gotten back into it as deeply as my first try, I will say, I am impressed at the changes the developers have made. The biggest thing holding my experience back for now is my system, that while not terrible, not quite good enough to get this games whole vision. Im looking forward to the final product and appreciate the work done so far. Keep it up guys. I would recommend this title to those who understand the development process and see this game as the diamond in the rough (though getting less rough with each update!) that it is.

You guys are kick´in it!
I have been playing your game for more than a year now and after a long disappointing period of not getting necessary updates for this game I lately see updates weekly! And I´m amazed! I had almost thought you had given up ;)

I´ve been playing storymode all the time and although my game crashed many times and I had bugs as f*ck (even my saves were deleted twice, can´t really tell if that wasn´t my fault but what ever) I still keep playing!

I´d love to play this game in co-op-Storymode and now it´s acctually possible, my friends are still kind of incredulous because of all the lags, but I see that you are doing your job and you are tryin to fix it and that makes me blissfully happy!!!

I´m writing this to kind of motivating you to keep going, althought I´m not sure if you are really reading this.
The point why I keep playing, is that I SEE SO MUCH POTENTIAL IN THIS GAME!!! This game is a raw diamond and I hope that I can see it in all of it´s glory one day.

This is a great game from an invading alien perspective! So far the storyline has progressed nicely and really helps in understanding "replication" or crafting. The variety of block shapes and decorations for building really gets the creativity flowing, though if that isn't enough, design your own weapons, armor, turrets, vehicles, aircraft, and watercraft! Build a colony, recruit NPCs, defend your colony or design it to defend itself. If you like survival games and plenty of complexity, I highly advise you grab this game!

Tired of the simplicity of Minecraft and sick of waiting for Starbound? Sick of Zombies and tired of Bambi killers but still want to survive and thrive? I know I was, and boy am I glad I stumbled onto this. I feel like I may have passed it over in the past because of bad reviews but as they had recently taken an upturn I decided to give it a shot.

Now I can't speak to the multiplayer aspect (As it's in alpha I can only assume it's sketchy at best, but that's to be expected.) but the single player is excellent, the story (which I'm only a few missions into since I jumped right into adventure mode at the start) has been interesting so far.

Here's a few aspects that make me want to play this over minecraft clones:

Need creature parts but tired of running around hunting? Set up some turrets and throw down a creature lure.
Tired of running everywhere? Build a rudimentary vehicle and ride into the sunset.
Ten story creature? Grab allies, outfit them with whatever you can find/buy/create yourself, make turrets, tanks and Take. It. Down.

I'm only twelve hours in and have barely done more than get iron weapons, a few turrets, and dug a few really impressive tunnels (Which I was way more proud of than anything I ever built in minecraft.) and made a few rudimentary shelters to keep the rain off my head (which didn't work, it is [or was when I wrote this] an alpha.). You can also build gods-know-what in the creation engine which is far too daunting for me to even touch at the moment, or if creating from scratch isn't your thing I'm sure you'll be able to download untold numbers of things others have created via steam in the future (Or now sans-steam with a little know-how).

All in all you should keep an eye on this one, and if you have the extra cash go ahead and buy it.

I've been PC gaming and building my own rigs since before Steam.
I've played a few games here and there that made me want to upgrade my computer system JUST to play that game!
For me, this is one of those games.

I love the creation editor! I can't wait for more parts to be added. (like wing flaps and stuff......just a suggestion)
I love this game so much, I bought a second copy for my wife and ANOTHER to give to a friend.

If you love building...... buildings or creating...... things (vehicles, aircraft, boats, submarines, swords, bows, guns and armor to name a few) and having them look like.....what ever you want them to look like AND being able to share them with friends AND AND being able to play with them with friends, then this might be the game for you. Whew!

Pros:
Build building, and things to use or look at.
Upload creations to share with others (or to back up)
Download creations others have created
Play with friends, with or with out said created things.
Adventure mode
Story mode (can be done co-op now)
Build mode (build and test creations)
First or Third person
Large land mass to play on and explore
Map and mission editor
Open world game
Voxel world (ground can be dug into and deformed)....(certain weapon explosions can deform terrain....slightly)

Cons:
Bugs (it's early access)
Updates sometimes cause saves to no longer work (it's early access)...(saved creations are not effected by this)
Forced third person in vehicles (currently)
Demanding on system (currently)...(you can turn the graphics down but you SHOULD have a good processor)
Creation editor CAN be difficult to learn to use

If you like polished AAA games, then wait until it is released.
Updates are monthly, if this is an issue, then wait.

If you love open world, creation type games, then go ahead and get it.
If you are patient or montly updates don't bother you, then go get it.
If you would like to see what a AAA (type) game looks like, while being developed, then get it.

If you love open world creation games and have a crappy computer, then you'll just have to think about your willingness to upgrade.

The game's pretty rough around the edges, definitely still in Alpha. It might still be worth a shot but it tends to crash 2-3 times an hour. Disappointing for something that was released over two years ago but could be something to watch for if it passes out of Early Release.

I won't go into a lot of details of the gameplay. If you want a review on that look further in the other reviews. My review is based on two things: my experiance playing the game as of nearly 2 years ago and the current build of this game as of July 12, 2016.

I remember a time when Alpha builds were considered proof of concept builds that were for in-company testing only. The product at that point had enough in it that the vision and basis to continue developement was clear and sound but would lack enough content to release publically for beta testing. Beta builds of a product meant that they has passed the preliminary in-house testing and featured enough development and content that it was suitable to release for public beta testing.

This game... this game came out on steam early 2014 and now, 2 years later, it hasn't even entered Beta stage testing.

What does this translate to? Well it doesn't mean it is a bad game. It doesn't mean that this game won't ever be completed. It isn't a prediction on the quality of the game when it is finally completed. What it DOES mean is that if you are thinking of getting this game... DON'T. Seriously, just don't. At least not yet. Come back in 5 years when this game MAY have finally exited beta stage and moved on to full release. Until then you are going to just end up paying $25 for a glorified psuedo demo with less content and more bugs than a real demo.
