What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We are a small studio, while we have the ambition, we do not have the resources to simple finish the game and release with all the promised features. Early Access allows us to have the financial resources to finish the product while at the same time allow players to help us figure out and solve problems in design and execution.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“This game should reach a final release candidate by around mid-2016.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The final version will be a smooth experience that allows players to build and share entire game worlds through the world editor. The main game storyline will be complete with many new animations to draw the player into the world.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“We are at the end of the alpha cycle and will be starting in beta soon.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes, the final game will be priced a little bit higher.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We listen to all the comments posted on the Steam boards and our own message board, we do not agree with all the suggestions, but we do consider them. If there are very good suggestions, they do make it into the game.”

A0.95 Released on Steam

For this build, we continued our quest for feature completion. There was a delay of a week due to several bugs. We’ve added in more behaviors for animals and packs, as well as new animations (most likely some bugs). We’ve also added in more story pieces. We’ll try to finish out the main story by next build in early to mid-May. We tweaked a lot of the gameplay. We figured out some of the reasons why players couldn’t hit animals very well in melee and went about changing them. We’ve also tried to simplify controls where possible. Finally, we’ve tweaked the Adventure Mode terrain, hopefully, people will like this version better.

About This Game

In Planet Explorers, it is the year 2287, one of the first colony ships sent out by Earth arrives at the planet Maria, in the Epsilon Indi Star System. During its landing sequence, something appears in front of the massive ship that causes it to lose control and crash into the planet. Some of the colonists survive in lifeboats, but what they find is an unforgiving land filled with creatures ready to outlast the visitors from Earth. Now the survivors must explorer, gather, build, create, fight, and ultimately, build a new home.

Game Modes

Planet Explorers will feature single and multiplayer modes.

In single player there are 3 distinct selections

  • Story Mode – Story mode is the main meat and bones of the game, it is the action-adventure-rpg-somewhat-4X segment, offering npcs, missions, colony building, farming, ranching, training, diplomacy, and of course, a storyline that you can follow or ignore. This story features a 17X8km world map with many unique character, landscapes, biomes, locations, and over 100 types of potential enemies. Even though we’ve made it seem like a very action oriented game in the trailers, in reality, players can choose to not fight so much as to just plant a farm, make some food, keep the colonists alive, negotiate with the sentient aliens, and defend the perimeter from the local life forms. That can still eventually arrive at the ending. And yes, there is an ending. Story mode also features coop with other players.

  • Adventure Mode – This mode is based on a procedural map generated from a seed. Currently, it comes in a 40X40 kilometer map. Players will be able to complete random missions, defeat bosses, and explore different landscapes in the mode and eventually be able to setup conditions that they want to play (such as tower defense or attack an alien camp). This mode will also feature survival gameplay. The randomization in this mode will eventually pull in player made objects and locations so that a world will always feature something new and unique.

  • Build Mode – In this mode, there are no enemies and an infinite amount of building material. It also currently comes in a 40X40km map. Players will be able to build whatever they want in this mode, including everything in the Creations Editor. Think of this as the perfect testing ground to test everything you build. Or…it’s your place to build your garden without ever worrying about the pesky aliens.

Multiplayer allows Local Area Network and player hosted servers. It features several modes but some are still on the drawing board or going through technical trials so the final result is still in flux. Players playing multiplayer should be able to bring at least one of their created objects into multiplayer games, be it a sword, gun, or vehicle.

  • Coop – Coop comes in many selections, such as adventure mode, tower defense mode, build mode, etc. This is pretty much an open world sandbox with a max of 32 players (this number still needs to be stress tested).

  • Versus – This mode allows teams of up to 16 players to battle against 16 players from another team. We allow full terrain manipulation in this mode. Currently, it's a point based system where one team wins if they reach a certain point level based on kills, built objects, resources mined, etc.

3650 reviews game is $24.99. I've had this game for years now, it was one of the first steam games I've ever owned. This company developes this game slowly. Then turns around and tells everyone they dont have the money to give everything promised. I bought this game RIGHT AFTER RELEASE and its been $24.99 since the start. I bought two copies when I bought the game out the door, and like I said 3650 reviews!

3650 x $24.99 = $91,213.50

I'm sorry. you don't have enough money to develop the game, you have (or sadly I feel the word "had" should be used because clearly you don't know what to do with money) you could of banked that money and collected enough interest to carry on as a game development company off of interest on this game alone, but I see such little effort on this game it hurts, get a new treasurer? You have enough money to develop this game more than you have, anyone can see that with the patch notes vs. copies sold and lets face it not everyone writes reviews so you've sold more than whats blantly obvious!

Don't get me wrong, I loved this game, had a great time struggling through constant crashes and corrupt save files only finding myself to start all over again many times. But what left me trying and gave me hope is the original vision for this game, the freedom to desgin your own stuff from houses to transportation and weapons, it was every virtual builder's dream. but now two years later and hardly any progress, i'm left upset with my hopes and dreams pumbled into the ground.

Please guys work on this game more and show us you care about us as well as your own creation and I'll be more than happy to edit/rewrite my review, but right now I'm left sad. Will always review patch notes and maybe one day left happy enough to suggest this game to people again.

Your once loving ex fan ~

A good game, a bit too grindy for me, but I have supported this since it was first added to steam. Each time I open this game I am delightfully surprised with the new content and interest creatures I find.

The game is very complicated and feels a lot like an MMO, resources are usually quite rare, and bullets are even harder to come by, which makes melee combat the most used for me. However most of the aliens on this planet can kill you in 1 or 2 hits. So melee combat is usually a bad idea.

To this day I still don't know how to actually make/import a vehicle into my game, I have looked up tutorials but there are so many buttons it is very overwhelming. Overall this game has always been an awesome idea when I look at it, but when I play it I find myself lost.

Simple reason for voting down: This game is stuck in early access hell. Many of this game's old problems still exist so very long after it was first released. I'm sad to say i'm not convinced the studio is/was serious about making this work, and every month that goes by with minimal development gives birth to similar games and projects.

The longer you guys wait, the less chance your game has.

A game with great potential, possibly ruined by uncommitted developers.

This is one of the best games I have ever played. It is a mix of survival, RPG and voxel crafting/building. The story is very good (although it can be played sandbox mode) and the crafting possibilities are almost endless. You can custom design everything from armour, weapons and vehicles to building panels and decorations, imported textures/skins and all.

Eventhough the building/creative aspect is massive, you can download other player's creations if you are not creative yourself.

It is still in developement so there are things simply unfinished like the story mode and it has some bugs and optimization issues but these get better with every patch and the devs are very active. The game has been around for years, but it is HUGE. Even the current content is more than any other EA I know of and it is getting bigger.

The gameplay is super fun, unique and rewarding. Where other games hold back, this game goes all out and does it in a balanced way. You start out with nothing but wooden tools, but not far into the game you will have a jet pack, glider, ground vehicle, helicopter, laser rifles, diamond swords, NPC followers, pet drones and more.

Although the random gen adventure maps need much improvement (and they are being improved) the handmade story map is beautifully made. The flora and fauna are beautiful. The art style is amazing. The creatures are plentiful, well animated and roam in packs that will make you stand in awe as heards of multiple types of creatures roam on the screen simultaneously.

The resources are balanced and getting them is not grindy. The ratio of docile to agressive creatures seems right and even after hundreds of hours of play I still see a new creature or new plant that I hadn't seen before almost every time I play. There are dozens of different plants and animals.

The biomes are beautiful, diverse and will keep you well immersed, from the grasslands to the desert to the jungles with luminescent plants that really make you feel like you are on an alien planet reminescent of Pandora.

There are so many aspects to this game that I could write a small novel just fleshing out a full review and I still wouldn't hit on every point. BUT the game is streamlined enough, has a tutorial system worked into the story mode and has an intuitive enough interface that it does not seem complicated or hard to learn for beginners.

I can't wait to see this game develop and am glad to get in on the relatively early stages.

I would love to see the flight controls have more freedom. Hopefully strafing with A and D will be added as well as rolling with Q and E and directional rotation with mouse movement (like a standard flight simulator) but the relatively basic flight controls aren't really that big of a deal but they could be a lot better.

I recommend playing the story mode to new players as it has a built in tutorial (the story quests cleverly teach you the controls and mechanics of the game) and the map is much more beautiful and optimised. The random gen sandbox maps are pretty bad in comparison and may leave a less than great first impression, but they are procedurally generated and are being improved.

One can simply play the story mode map as a sandbox by just doing whatever they want and finding the NPCs manually (instead of following the questline to them) to buy the recipes for advanced crafting.

First person mode can be accessed by pressing F5 twice. (hitting it once removes the mouse cursor and allows normal third person movement). Although first person mode works alright, it needs some improvement.

Remember that the game is in developement and the story is not yet finished atm (you will eventually hit a dead end) and some colony management mechanics are not finished either. BUT there are already more mechanics in the game than pretty much every other EA survival/crafting game and many hours of fun can be had with the story mode especially since you can play it as a sandbox.

PE can be played single player OR multiplayer, offline on a public server or private coop with friends. Admittedly, setting up a private VPN server is a little tedious as it is not implemented natively yet, but it can be done and I did it just by wathching a youtube tutorial. Even the story mode can be played multiplayer.

You will not be disappointed with this game if you like the idea of a mixture of survival/crafting/rpg and understand what an EA is.

Even if PE didn't develop any further than it currently is, I definitely got my money's worth and will continue to play it for hundreds of hours, but the devs are not showing any signs of slowing down. PE is headed towards another major release milestone soon and I can't wait.

Check out my gameplay of PE on my twitch past broadcasts or watch me play live at www.twitch.tv/thresholdseven

Woooohhhh this one in it's early days is skidis at besta. When you start at the beginning of the story line you can't hand over the juice to the fimail. W.T.F why did I buy it? Not saying that the game has no potential. It has allot of good potential. I think though that it's still too early to judge it. As for me I think I'm going to stick out with this game, to see how far the developer's will and how far they can take it. I think at it's full release date the game will turn out to be grate.😊

If you have patience and don't mind waiting for something that will be special, get this game! I might just buy it for some of my friends anyways!

Random thoughts on the game:

Game has tons of potential, the horrendously slow development time has been a pain in the butt, but at least they've not given up on it!

Compared to the many other voxel games out there, I feel that this one allows you the most creativity and customization, just on a much smaller scale. You can import your own textures and decals so that alone gives you nearly unlimited design possibilities.

You want to make an exact replica of a WW2 Tommy Gun complete with serial numbers etched into the gun, you can! You want to make an Apache Longbow on a 1:1 scale? You can! You want to make a wooden pirate ship? You can!

Trying to make a solid glass material, I accidentally made a block that changes color with the time of day, I call it a happy accident!

Downside, no real flying vehicles, the airships may "fly", but they still handle like a car and can't even go over many trees. Fortunately the hit boxes for the larger trees are ignored and you can go through them.

Quests are a little buggy at times, but I am happy to notice that they are usually fixed as the community points them out and ones that aren't fixxable with a patch usually fix themselves after you save your game and reload it.

I have literally had this game since release and I have recommended this game to people in the past because i saw so much potential in this game just the fact that we could design our own weapons drew me into it but after two years seeing its still early release and still in alpha i cannot in good faith tell anyone to get this anymore i mean you had to have made over 2500 at least in sales you should of been able to produce much more even within a small studio it seems you think you only need tiny hotfixes to keep it a float but honestly i think a game changer is needed

Development is slow but getting there (its a lot better than what it was two years ago), and has massive potential. The devs are also quite friendly and active.

I really liked this game when it released in early access nearly TWO years ago.
Now nearly two years later i can't help but wondering why the game hasn't released yet. Like many other people already posted, right now there are better games with more content updates out there.

This game is taking way to long to make me want to play it.

Seriously underdeveloped for the time that i have had the game. Purchased it over a year a go, still no fun.

im reviewing again , after 0.85 (recommended on that time )

reviewing after version 0.921

lets start on features on this game and what i like on it

the building and costumizing in this game is nice , it started with vehicles , weapons and base creation and then they add ability to save your building parts as known ( building iso ) by this feature you can now combine multiple objects to create faster and bigger and reacher objects as like parts of building or citties on easier and faster way , they add world editing feature so you can edit and make costume terrain with objects and also they plan for a scenario creation feature , they add armor costumizing , you can create even an charactor armors as you like and the style you want , the character is also customizable you can make him fat , slim , color changing ... etc , you can also design any armor , vehicle or weapon independently before gathering its materials and save them as iso , its simple and the game is very unique on its building style , i didn't see untill now a game that gave you ability to design your own style of armor .

speaking about playing , the game have many bugs even more than before , what disappoint me here is that the bugs on the game are realy annoying and nearly game breaking , devs are fixing , but there are bugs would pop up again , the game isn't stable, on some actions you can solve bugs avoid , or break your game and start over , because of the amount of bugs that looks breaks the fun on the game , i would not recommend it untill it get better condition and we can comfortly playing the game without worry of game breaking and annoying bugs , the game saves also are not safe , expect your save game would breaks in later updates , but fortunately the devs here are taking care that your iso ( creation ) doesn't get affected from future updates so they are safe untill now didn't saw corrupted creation file

thanks for your reading and sorry for miss spells

Had potential but development has been too slow. Adding it to the "Early Access Survival Game Dust Pile" and hoping it will become a real game one day.

Backed this game on kickstarter, and backing it here.

This game is not for every one. You've got to be patient. It's an alpha and by that I mean a real alpha. Not those comercial ones you can see every where. It's far from finished and has been in developement for a long time : the team is small. But they d'ont give up their game like so many and they push on, polishing it. I have more than a hundred hours of this game before the early access and it keeps getting better, slowly but surely.

Trust me when I tell you that this game once finished will be great. For the moment there are lots of flaws, clunkyness and a few bugs. But they keep improving. This is one of those game where you should keep an eye on if you can't play alpha.

My favorite part of this game ? The item creation system. I almost feel like I'm in 3Dsmax. Oh and you can destroy every thing. Well almost. Close enough for me hehe.

A wonderfull game for those who love to create. The crafting is awsome and getting better every update. Cool Voxel game. A true GEM!!! glad I bought this, love the single player story and Adventure modes. I'm Not into the MMO part of it but it has that to. Plus, you can build vehicles, airships, helis and weapons and share them with everyone.... simply put,
I love it. Cant wait for the next update!!! Keep it up guys and gals :)

SIgh, finally time to write my Steam PE review I suppose. I was an early backer of Planet Explorers from back in mid 2013. I have put much effort into playing extensively, restarting my save every time a major update required it and corresponding with the devs, who were always very nice to work with btw, Please note, my time in game is next to nothing here in the Steam version because I stuck with the manual install of the game instead from the PE website.

For a good, solid 2 years I was a HUGE advocate for Planet Explorers and if you ask me today, of course I still love the concept and think the Devs had great vision with this game. Hell, some of my friends probably thought I was working for Pathea I talked about it and plugged it so damn much.
As you may have noticed though, I used the term "had"... yes, past tense was intended, as unfortunate as it seems. I simply don't have it in me to start yet another save and rebuild for the greater good. I've gone though this "Early Access" process so many stinkin times and been disappointed nearly as often, It seems as though the good folks at Pathea may be getting further from ever reaching the goal of making this a proper release, rather than closer.
They are a Dev that I fully expected to have this game proving the Early Access naysayers wrong, much like Kerbal Space Program. Yes, at one point this game was legitimately up there with KSP in my book as far as development and commitment go.
However, it now seems the light at the end of the tunnel has dimmed to the point where I am forced to thumb down Planet Explorers at this time.

I waited nearly a year to post this review, with the idea in the back of my mind that I may actually have to give PE a thumbs down. I didn't want this day to come. I am still hopeful Pathea turns this around and gives me no choice but to change this to a strong recommendation.

/Sad

2 years passed, didn't play since v0.7 and now 0.921, constant mini freezes/lags (i7/24gb ram/gtx970), fonts are readable only with some screen resolutions (on 1920*1200 i can't read anything in dialogs). Controls became worse, try open map when you play in mode without mouse cursor - it doesn't appear. You see "harvesting" icon on the tree, but character doing nothing, you ready up/holster weapon multiple times and it finally can harvest.

I have no idea what developers do, super slow progress - no problems , but i don't see any improvements or i will not see because i can't move forward, just don't want to play a game where basic controls are crappy after 3 years of development. Last time(v0.7) i had some fun and now not going to recommend it at all.

Anyway, you can always refund / buy it on big sale.

Played it when it first launched but (no offence to the devs) was a buggy unstable piece of ♥♥♥♥.
Lately something amazing happened, they updated it! New Engine! New Feattures! New EVERYTHING! Completely revamped from the ground up this game is on its way to success and will rightly take its place up there.

I love the new updates and they have worked hard you can really tell.

I would wait for a price drop though, not worth £20. Wait for a sale :)

Basically, yeah. The game's good but the launcher is bugged.
The "Cools"
Custom Worlds
Custom Armor
Custom Weapons
Custom Everything
And custom many more things *facepalm*
The "Ohs"
Buggy launcher (Mac OS X). (worked on 3rd try for me)
Needs High-End computer for good graphics
No animals in Build Mode.
The Conclusion
A good building game for designers.
You can build a choppah, a sword, a shotgun, a boat, a house, a town.
So, I like it.

The development speed is glacial, necesary things like optimization are being left to be dealt with last, while the game is unplayable if you want to use ost of the features that are supposed to be available. Poor progression, poor replayability, non-existant survival mechanics. It is a nice project, with voxel terraforming and custom vehicles, etc. but it is very dull as a game.

There is so much freedom in this game that you could spend years trying out everything...possibly longer. Create virtualy anything you can think of and USE it!!! The building system is like minecraft where you have the freedom do build however you want. I have not done a review before so I am kinda at a loss as far as what I should point out but IMO this game is one of the most open games around that I have played so far and I love it!

Worst unfinished game I have ever purchased. So difficult to even meet up at first with a friend, let alone to figure out everything. Once you then figure out hte basics you craft a few things get a little excited and then realize there is no point to the game at all. The mob AI is terrible. The zones feel empty after a short amount of time. There are really no goals (including exploring). Definitely far too unfinished and is the sole reason I am extremely wary of purchasing greenlit games in the future.
