What the developers have to say:

“Planet Explorers is an open world RPG for its single player mode, as in there's a storyline with an ending. The game is in alpha, there will be bugs and strange things that we can't explain. Since it's an RPG, there will be more bugs than other games of the voxel type. Also due to the RPG nature, each main update will be spaced by about a month. But due to the decent size of our team, each update will contain a lot of content. We do listen very closely to our players, so you will have an opportunity to impact the direction of the game.”

A0.85 Released on Steam

We’ve just released the a0.85 build on Steam. It’s mostly a Story mode build with some Adventure mode updates. All old saves are probably not going to work with the current build, so here’s a save package for you to download: http://www.pathea.net/images/SaveData.rar

Below is the changelist:

Added player customization
Added several new face types
Added 11 new animal species
Added 2 new enemy types
Added 2 new locations
Added swamp biome
Added mountain biome
Added 7 new NPCs
Added Pujan wall
Added 2 new Pujan towns
Added 4 new rivers to story map
Extended storyline
Added natural bridges to adventure mode
Added better town designs to adventure mode
Added new air boss to adventure mode
Added rainforest biome to adventure mode
Changed building block textures
Easier to pick up plants

We weren’t able to get the 64 bit version working with the current build due to the difference in behavior tree libraries, but it is already working with a0.9, so everyone will just need to wait a bit longer for that. The player customization and ingame NPC randomization are still being tweaked...so don't worry too much yet if you happen to meet a really strange character...

A0.9 Progress Update: World Editor

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K79sBhWSl9E

Hope you still remember the World Editor we post a couple weeks ago. Today, we’ll show you more details about it with a video. To remind you, World Editor is one of the major things we’re working on for a0.9. It is a program that enables you to launch and edit a world map in the editor, or import maps from other editors such as World Machine. The main tools we’re going to introduce today are different brushes, auxiliary tools and the artifact, a kind of voxel brush that players can generate and share. One thing that we haven’t finished is that editor UI, so there are lots of empty icons, that will be fixed later. We’re still incorporating the Story and Mission editors into the world editor, so we’ll show those later.

About This Game

In Planet Explorers, it is the year 2287, one of the first colony ships sent out by Earth arrives at the planet Maria, in the Epsilon Indi Star System. During its landing sequence, something appears in front of the massive ship that causes it to lose control and crash into the planet. Some of the colonists survive in lifeboats, but what they find is an unforgiving land filled with creatures ready to outlast the visitors from Earth. Now the survivors must explorer, gather, build, create, fight, and ultimately, build a new home.

Game Modes

Planet Explorers will feature single and multiplayer modes.

In single player there are 3 distinct selections

  • Story Mode – Story mode is the main meat and bones of the game, it is the action-adventure-rpg-somewhat-4X segment, offering npcs, missions, colony building, farming, ranching, training, diplomacy, and of course, a storyline that you can follow or ignore. This story features a 17X8km world map with many unique character, landscapes, biomes, locations, and over 100 types of potential enemies. Even though we’ve made it seem like a very action oriented game in the trailers, in reality, players can choose to not fight so much as to just plant a farm, make some food, keep the colonists alive, negotiate with the sentient aliens, and defend the perimeter from the local life forms. That can still eventually arrive at the ending. And yes, there is an ending.

  • Adventure Mode – This mode is based on a procedural map generated from a seed. Currently, it comes in a 40X40 kilometer map. Players will be able to complete random missions, defeat bosses, and explore different landscapes in the mode and eventually be able to setup conditions that they want to play (such as tower defense or attack an alien camp). This mode will also feature survival gameplay. The randomization in this mode will eventually pull in player made objects and locations so that a world will always feature something new and unique.

  • Build Mode – In this mode, there are no enemies and an infinite amount of building material. It also currently comes in a 40X40km map. Players will be able to build whatever they want in this mode, including everything in the Creations Editor. Think of this as the perfect testing ground to test everything you build. Or…it’s your place to build your garden without ever worrying about the pesky aliens.

Multiplayer allows Local Area Network and player hosted servers. It features several modes but some are still on the drawing board or going through technical trials so the final result is still in flux. Players playing multiplayer should be able to bring at least one of their created objects into multiplayer games, be it a sword, gun, or vehicle.

  • Coop – Coop comes in many selections, such as adventure mode, tower defense mode, build mode, etc. This is pretty much an open world sandbox with a max of 32 players (this number still needs to be stress tested).

  • Versus – This mode allows teams of up to 16 players to battle against 16 players from another team. We allow full terrain manipulation in this mode. Currently, it's a point based system where one team wins if they reach a certain point level based on kills, built objects, resources mined, etc.

After playing loads of Terraria, I was looking for something similar in 3D.
Therefore I decided to try Planet Explorers, Fortress Craft Evolved, Space Engineers, and Starforge.
Unfortunately I haven't tried Minecraft.

Planet Explorers is already very content rich and focused very much on crafting.
There are tons of different materials, many recipies come in different assembly possibilities (meaning you can craft the same item with different base-items).
Crafting a base/colony and protecting it with automated systems is part of gameplay.
You can build vehicles, design own items (like vehicles, weapons, housing) for fast crafting in the gameworld in an easy-to-use editor.
There is currently a single-player-only story mode, which is fun to play and introduces you step by step into the different concepts of the game, while providing an interesting story.

Multiplayer allows you to define your world. You can choose between Game Modes "Build" and "Adventure" - giving you different access to ressources (Build - as much as you can carry), recipies, and quests. This is combined with 3 different Game Types "Cooperativ", "VS", and "Survival". The difference between these types are how Teams are created for PVP. While in Cooperative, there is only one team, Survival offers no teams - everybody for themself, VS allows you to choose up to 4 teams.
This is combined with two options: infinite ressources and play with/without monsters.
In adventure mode - npcs offer random quests but with no story on the bigger scale.

In multiplayer you are currently limited to 3 character slots.
The character customisation is not yet very broad at the moment - but seems to be work in progress.

Another cool feature are the different monsters - ranging from very little to really huge.
With this the game gets a little the feeling of Final Fantasy.

Very interesting game. Nice RPG mood to it, but the controls leave alot to be desired, and the camera clipping is really horrid. a FPS view would be awesome!

Pro:
- Open world
- Active development
- Active community
- Can share and download things your create
- Multiplayer is fun

Cons:
- Huge distances to cover on foot early in single player game.
- AI is not the best, path finding needs work.
- Lack of terrain tools to work with.

Over all PE is a fun and enjoyable experience, however some frustrations come up when NPC get stuck and you have to walk a half mile back to get them. Crafting is great and you can download creations that other players have made easily. If you are looking for an open world, good single player story, base building, resource gathering game, then PE is for you.

Great visuals, good gameplay (some bugs, but it is Early Access so... ), just lack people to play, and maybe more interesting quests. Overall for an Early Access Game I give a 7/10. Recommended!

Now I want to say that this is a tentative yes to suggesting this game. I love this game, personally, and have found hours of fun just digging and crafting and learning. However: I cannot stress enough that this is an early access game. There's still not a whole lot of content, there are a multitude of bugs, there are some frustrating elements about the gameplay, but overall if you're OK with playing a game still in development then I retract my tentative nature.

The creatures are diverse and interesting, and worlds are colorful and BIG, the technology is a steady advance from swords to pistols to rifles to RPGs. The colonizing element is a lot of fun, the building is something I find unique and more user-creative than other games out there. Normally I get bored with these games after about two hours, but I'm still finding stuff to do here. The gameplay is also relatively stable, I've found a few fatal bugs but nothing that makes gameplay impossible.

I hate early access games. I think that whilst the principle is nice, it's far too tempting for devs to take the money and not deliver on their promises. But this game has interested me from the time I first saw it. I've been looking for a good survival and crafting experience that doesn't rely on multiplayer and all the griefers that come with it. This game offers that in what is already an impressive array of single player and co-op experiences.
Yes it is still noticeably alpha in some areas but the important things all work well and the graphics are good for a game of this type. I'm still discovering new creatures and elements and it sounds like there will be more added by the time it's finished. Building and crafting is very simple and intuitive. I was impressed that the story mode had at least some voice acting, hopefully they finish it off for all the quests and maybe add more than just the 2 or 3 soundtracks they've got.
But yes looking at the other games offering similar experiences I am satisfied that at the moment this one offers the best experience for those who want an exploration game without forced multiplayer. The direction it's heading at the moment it seems it will end up as a combination of Elder Scrolls, DayZ and Minecraft, blending them all together for something unique.
Obligatory throw away line: "It's like skyrim with aliens - 10/10"

Pros: Nearly unlimited creativity. Want to fly a Millenium Falcon? No problem! Even if you are not very creative, installing other peoples wondrous works is as easy as drag and drop.

Exploring is fun! Some cool scenic locations as well as hangliding through alien canyons.

Storyline is solid. From the intro with Carl Sagan's quote to the mystery behind this planet, I really craved more.

Cons: Everything that comes with alpha. Bugs mostly that range from annoying (falling through the ground) to storyline breaking (Mainline npcs turn invisible).

Despite there being over 200 different animals, most of their animations and actions are too similar. Runs up to me, swings claw defines most animals (not all though).

Overall, this game is great and worth the buy. You can put a couple hours into it or hundreds, there many possibilities.

It's crazy. You run around killing things and getting better items like in any RPG-FPS thing, only it's a bit rogue-like in that you have no idea (at least at first) whether you've bitten off more thna you can chew. Combine this with almost god-like powers to build things, both permanent fixtures and crafting useable items ranging from personal weapons to land, water, and air vehicles. And no real documentation so you have to experiment, experiment, experiment. Oh, and you can starve to death, too, unless you learn how to get food. And once you get beyond these basics, there's a whole alien world to explore, quests, bosses, the works. Fantastic concept and incredible freedome. It can easily become a total time sink.

Unfortunately my $2500 Alienware laptop cannot run this game due to it's graphics card making the game too laggy to enjoy. However, I am still able to do create mode just fine making my own weapons and vehicles. I have watched a lot of videos about this game and read a ton of opinions. As an avid Minecraft player, who plays with mods and shaders, I can honestly say I need to get a desktop now to play this game.

This is the sandbox building experience we've all been waiting for. Finally we can ditch the blocky worlds and trade up for some sweet voxels. I am not a huge gamer, I only like to build things and I'm going to build a pc just for this game. Says much?

Please don't be like so many developers I'm hearing about on Steam that up and ditches their games for various reasons. Don't ever stop working on this game as you can clearly see you're gaining popularity and loyal fans. This is THE game in my life now, don't ever take that away from me!!!

While this game is early access and there is still a bit the developers are working on the Single Player Story Mode is so well developed, expansive, and completed at this point in time that it seems a lot better than some "completed" games I have played. The work they have put into it has won me over and I really look forward to seeing them finish the game.

Admittedly it is early access and is not perfect. Some quests are a bit glitchy, followers occasionally get stuck, and adventure mode rivers end up looking more like canals than rivers (fixes for this is on their road map for the next two major updates).

I have not played multiplayer so do not have feedback on it. I have played Story mode extensively (lots of solo exploration and have began working on my first settlement) and a bit of adventure mode.

Pros:
Huge and developed story mode
Story mode is a great tutorial on how the game works and all its ins and outs
Can build your own vehicles and use them in game
very playable for an Early access game

Cons:
Bugs (Early Access)
Creation UI could be cleaner
Clothing creation recipies are gender specific so you might end up creating items you can not use if you are not careful
Adventure Mode world creation needs work to smooth out rivers (already on roadmap for 0.85 and 0.9 releases)
