What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We are a small studio, while we have the ambition, we do not have the resources to simple finish the game and release with all the promised features. Early Access allows us to have the financial resources to finish the product while at the same time allow players to help us figure out and solve problems in design and execution.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“This game should reach a final release candidate by around mid-2016.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The final version will be a smooth experience that allows players to build and share entire game worlds through the world editor. The main game storyline will be complete with many new animations to draw the player into the world.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“We are in beta.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“No, it will be the same price.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We listen to all the comments posted on the Steam boards and our own message board, we do not agree with all the suggestions, but we do consider them. If there are very good suggestions, they do make it into the game.”

Beta 0.1 Released

It has been a long road, but we've finally entered beta. What beta means for us is that all the major technical and artistic assets are in game, it does not mean we're only going to balance and bug fix from now on. There are still much left to do. Some key items on our to do list during the beta:

Ingame aid - something like the Word paperclip, optional but should be very helpful for new players.
Adventure storyline - we'll be adding in a more mission based system to the adventure mode that ties up all the gameplay elements.
AI tweaks and additions - there are still several species and behaviors to be added, also lots of balancing to do.
Storyline tweaks - adding in more cutscenes and more animation to bring the story to life, also balancing.
Optimization - optimize the game where ever possible.
Balancing gameplay - tweaks on animation, damage, hp, armor, defense, where to buy stuff, etc.
Animation - polishing up animation
Make ISO site - attempt to make an official download site for ISOs.
Bugs - terminate all bugs.
32 bit - Make the game run decent enough on a 32 bit machine.

Our beta will not last long, we should be out of it in 1-2 months. Does beta mean that saves will be protected? For story mode, yes. For adventure, no. If you want to be completely safe as far as saves are concerned, please wait for the final in a bit. Now that we're in beta, we need all of your help to determine the best balance and find all the bugs. Please give us your feedback on our board or the Steam boards or email us!

For this build, we've fixed a ton of things and added a ton more. We're still working on the ending cg for the story mode, we will add that over the next two weeks. Here's a non-spoiler screenshot from it.

About This Game

In Planet Explorers, it is the year 2287, one of the first colony ships sent out by Earth arrives at the planet Maria, in the Epsilon Indi Star System. During its landing sequence, something appears in front of the massive ship that causes it to lose control and crash into the planet. Some of the colonists survive in lifeboats, but what they find is an unforgiving land filled with creatures ready to outlast the visitors from Earth. Now the survivors must explorer, gather, build, create, fight, and ultimately, build a new home.

Game Modes

Planet Explorers will feature single and multiplayer modes.

In single player there are 3 distinct selections

  • Story Mode – Story mode is the main meat and bones of the game, it is the action-adventure-rpg-somewhat-4X segment, offering npcs, missions, colony building, farming, ranching, training, diplomacy, and of course, a storyline that you can follow or ignore. This story features a 17X8km world map with many unique character, landscapes, biomes, locations, and over 100 types of potential enemies. Even though we’ve made it seem like a very action oriented game in the trailers, in reality, players can choose to not fight so much as to just plant a farm, make some food, keep the colonists alive, negotiate with the sentient aliens, and defend the perimeter from the local life forms. That can still eventually arrive at the ending. And yes, there is an ending. Story mode also features coop with other players.

  • Adventure Mode – This mode is based on a procedural map generated from a seed. Currently, it comes in a 40X40 kilometer map. Players will be able to complete random missions, defeat bosses, and explore different landscapes in the mode and eventually be able to setup conditions that they want to play (such as tower defense or attack an alien camp). This mode will also feature survival gameplay. The randomization in this mode will eventually pull in player made objects and locations so that a world will always feature something new and unique.

  • Build Mode – In this mode, there are no enemies and an infinite amount of building material. It also currently comes in a 40X40km map. Players will be able to build whatever they want in this mode, including everything in the Creations Editor. Think of this as the perfect testing ground to test everything you build. Or…it’s your place to build your garden without ever worrying about the pesky aliens.

Multiplayer allows Local Area Network and player hosted servers. It features several modes but some are still on the drawing board or going through technical trials so the final result is still in flux. Players playing multiplayer should be able to bring at least one of their created objects into multiplayer games, be it a sword, gun, or vehicle.

  • Coop – Coop comes in many selections, such as adventure mode, tower defense mode, build mode, etc. This is pretty much an open world sandbox with a max of 32 players (this number still needs to be stress tested).

  • Versus – This mode allows teams of up to 16 players to battle against 16 players from another team. We allow full terrain manipulation in this mode. Currently, it's a point based system where one team wins if they reach a certain point level based on kills, built objects, resources mined, etc.

Playing with friends sucks. The configuration sucks. The customization is a really cool aspect, but no matter your design for swords/armour, or how cool or intricate you make it, the vanilla armour blows it away. If I can say anything, it's that the development on this game went backwards, throwing it into the bin of "Meh" games.

this game is very fun. However, there are a lot of bugs in the story mode (to be expected as its still in beta), the adventure mode is good to learn how to play, and once the story mode has a lot of its wrinkles ironed out, it too will be great. Would recommend to anyone who enjoys supporting early access games and knows what they are going to end up getting.

This game has problems ofcourse.
I had a trouble targeting some wierd shape trees when I needed to chop it down. When I shoot It felt like the bullets were not really coming from the gun I was holding. Quests in the story mode are bugged. Maybe some are fixed by now but I am pretty sure that dev will add more and more bugs later on ;D
I don't even remember when I bought this game but I am still getting updates. I just had one update actually and that reminds me that I have this game.

This game is only in beta 0.2 and considering that this game has very pretty graphic. Unless dev all of sudden decides to jump to 1.0 tomorrow, it is too early to talk about things like, used to have a big potential.

So I put a decent amount of time into this game and these are my thoughts on the game.

- The ISO system
The ISO system is easy to use you pick some base parts (like gun barrels and handles.) and put the materials you pull out of the ground onto them to create new and personalised weapons vehicles and aircraft.

- Adventure Mode
The Adventure Mode is the sandbox mode essentially and you get dropped onto a randomly generated world that can be fairly large with just the basics and you can do anything from there.

-Story Mode
From what I played they have an interesting allbeit cliche story. The background information and the landmass you play on are both plentiful and interesting. They added a lot more since the last time i played and I am genuinely excited to play it.

-Build mode
This mode gives you all the equipment all the materials and is just for testing ISOs. No AI spawn which is unfortunate because i would like to test my weaponry to see if they work well or not and build a huge colony.

-Multiplayer
I have only played Multiplayer a handful of times it seems pretty well fleshed out it plays like Adventure mode but has other players in it.

All in all I enjoy the game and will continue to play it in the coming years. This game is still in early access and still needs work done so while playing I recommend not looking at the bugs to hard and to make note of them and let the Devs know.

Sigh. Where do I start.
The game has a cool world.
I challenge you to find a game that has worse control mechanics then this one.
See how many games are in my library? This one takes top prize for just having a clunky control scheme.
Nothing is streamlined like it could be.
You know how long I have been waiting for the enemies to actually react to damage.
About 2 yrs. ABOUT TWO YEARS!
Almost every update is very minor and takes forever.
Before purchassing take a look at the updates and what they actually did.
Game is an ABSOLUTE TRAGEDY.

Tired of the simplicity of Minecraft and sick of waiting for Starbound? Sick of Zombies and tired of Bambi killers but still want to survive and thrive? I know I was, and boy am I glad I stumbled onto this. I feel like I may have passed it over in the past because of bad reviews but as they had recently taken an upturn I decided to give it a shot.

Now I can't speak to the multiplayer aspect (As it's in alpha I can only assume it's sketchy at best, but that's to be expected.) but the single player is excellent, the story (which I'm only a few missions into since I jumped right into adventure mode at the start) has been interesting so far.

Here's a few aspects that make me want to play this over minecraft clones:

Need creature parts but tired of running around hunting? Set up some turrets and throw down a creature lure.
Tired of running everywhere? Build a rudimentary vehicle and ride into the sunset.
Ten story creature? Grab allies, outfit them with whatever you can find/buy/create yourself, make turrets, tanks and Take. It. Down.

I'm only twelve hours in and have barely done more than get iron weapons, a few turrets, and dug a few really impressive tunnels (Which I was way more proud of than anything I ever built in minecraft.) and made a few rudimentary shelters to keep the rain off my head (which didn't work, it is [or was when I wrote this] an alpha.). You can also build gods-know-what in the creation engine which is far too daunting for me to even touch at the moment, or if creating from scratch isn't your thing I'm sure you'll be able to download untold numbers of things others have created via steam in the future (Or now sans-steam with a little know-how).

All in all you should keep an eye on this one, and if you have the extra cash go ahead and buy it.

I first got the game when it was very, VERY early access - and honestly, there wasn't much to it then and it needed a lot of polishing. I decided to give it time. I recently picked it back up, and can confidently say it is much better now! Honestly, I really am waiting for more NPC polishing to give the world extra flavour, because there are so few good survival/building/exploration games which focuses on the sense of community between survivors. I would love to see that better implmented in Planet Explorers, and it seems that is just what is planned!

This game is amazing if you like building stuff and modding because the best part of the game is the "voxel creater" where you can build or download and install custome creations super easily I love this game.

Beta update has changed this game a lot, but there's still a long road for Planet Explorers. I think developers are working too slow for improving this game. Expensive, but still worth to play. There aren't many games like this.

Well.... I bought this here planet explorers approximately ages ago. It had a solid concept with solid foundations in place when I bought it, and now, it has become a game well and truly worth having.
PRO's:
* Voxel creation system for weapons, vehicles, decor and armour: Pretty mad....
* Build system, build anywhere anytime within a large area where unlike other survival build games you dont have to be 2 metres from where you place... Need a bridge in a hurry? No worries! planet explorers has it covered. Need a watchtower to snipe stuff? No worries same applies.
* Still in beta. much more to come I'm sure.
CONS':
* Still in beta. much more to come I'm sure.
* Early game mining is realisticly tedious. : /
* Main menu music is annoying. yeah they fixed that one. music theme is so (muchly so) better.

all in all I rate a "You should buy this game/10"
Nice work devs. Love your work.
