Yes this is going to get hated but its kinda sad when games like Akane the kunoichi are better at being platformers than this game. The major problem with AVGN is quite simply "we forgot people would be paying money for this." the satire about a person being trapped in a bad game you play is largely lost when you have to shell out money to play a bad game.
That's really the feeling I got the whole way through the game, the tropes and nods to the AVGN series are funny and entertaining but the bad game gets in the way quite hard. I really think they tried so hard to capture the "crap nes era experiences" that they forgot not only would people have to play this game but people would be paying money. its almost like it'd been less offensive to me had I paid for a movie instead, to watch someone else suffer through the game for my amusement than play the game myself.
What makes this game terrible? death blocks that kill you instantly just to touch them which are EVERYWHERE to the point it felt like "we couldn't come up with something here so we'll fill content with these cheap deaths". "I wanna be the guy" style tricks and barebones mechanics are all over this game, however IWBTG was free and this you pay money for, so it makes things a lot more sour.
If you are an AVGN fan you already own this game so I wont be convincing you, but to anyone else looking at this game as a person looking for a platformer to play I def say wait for a sale, because the only appeal of this game comes from the tropes and humor nods to the series, the gameplay is powerglove bad. when I beat the game I did not feel like a winner, I felt like I used drugs.
