“A significant amount of polish and extra content is par for the course, but the most significant omission from the current build is the single player Season Mode. This will consist of a season played against a series of AI coaches each with their own distinctive personality.

Random events and challenges will occur during matches; you'll be able to build up your relationships with other teams and vote on league rule changes, as well as acquire new players.

We have a huge amount planned for this mode and will announce more details soon.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is currently stable and fully functional in multiplayer, with single player AI skirmishes working well too. Gameplay is largely complete: the game just requires more content, the full single player Season Mode and polishing.

You'll get the following in the current build:

Frozen Endzone is now Frozen Cortex!

We've renamed the game and changed some elements of the aesthetic: it's still the same gameplay but we've made a few tweaks!

You can read about the decision here and I hope you like the new update which is hitting later today. Here's what's coming:

Big update coming in July

Greetings,

We will be pushing an update for Frozen Endzone at the end of July.

We’ve also been working heavily on single player content which isn’t ready to release yet. I’ll talk about that a bit in a moment but first, here’s what you can expect in the update…

Change List

- OSX and Linux builds

Single Player

Alongside this update we have been working on the single player game, which we think is a fantastic combination of a traditional season mode but with a much tighter structure, character interaction and potential for storytelling.

The main mode will feature 7 distinct AI teams, all with their own coaches. Each coach has a response to the player, ranging from hatred to admiration, and their dialogue will change based on this and your performance in the league. You’ll be playing in the Global Cortex League (GCL) against these teams and also in a series of specially crafted contests with hugely variable rules and player behaviour.

You’ll earn incremental stat upgrades and be able to customise your team; there will also be storylines and intrigues which happen within the league that will have a bearing on your progress. The coaches will each have a different agenda and occasionally will propose league-wide votes on rule changes which you can influence.

There will also be other leagues and tournaments where you can coach, as well as an ongoing background story which will progress across different playthroughs with different teams

We’ve been working on this a lot behind-the-scenes for a while and making progress on it is very exciting. This kind of gameplay isn’t something that will work with incremental updates, so you’ll have to bear with us as we polish it up to the level where we’re happy to show it to you.

Frozen Endzone (possibly soon to be Frozen Cortex) is a brilliant new type of game from Mode7Games. It mixes sports with the turn-based action of their previous entry into the market, Frozen Synapse. Players plan their players moves, can plan opponent's moves to see what will happen, and then submit their turn. Meanwhile, their opponent does the same planning process, and then after both players have submitted their turn, the game calculates and displays a result. Best part is that you never have to be online at the same time as your opponent!

The game itself has simple rules. You score points by running through bonus zones or getting into the endzone. Players must advance the ball each turn. Once you run the ball, you cannot pass it again, aside from a free turn at the beginning of a possession.

The blocking works well, with whoever is stopped first getting to block any moving player. Players within a certain range will intercept a ball, and players within a certain range will chase after and tackle opponents.

I enjoy both major modes of play, Full Match and Duplicate. Full Match involves 18 turns of play, with turnovers changing possession, and touchdowns causing the game to restart in the original position with the teams swapped. Duplicate is almost an 'extra point' type situation, where the offense is trying to score and the defense just to stop them - possession changes count as ending the play and then the match restarts with the teams swapped, and whoever has the most points wins.

They're still improving it as we speak, and working on a single player campaign which sounds amazing. This is a must have for anyone who has an interest in sports and loved Frozen Synapse, and is worth a try for someone who is a fan of either sports or Frozen Synapse.

Fantastic follow up game from Mode7. Future sports football-esque simultaneous-turn based strategy game.

Right now the mechanics are great but my experience with the pre-Steam release was plagued by player inactivity. So far, on the first day on Steam, there are more people playing Frozen Endzone than I've ever seen since I pre-ordered it from their website, so the Steam release has certainly fixed the population issue.

The game is in REALLY good shape for an early access title, and you get two copies when you purchase it. Must buy for strategy fans or fans of Frozen Synapse!
