In Europa Universalis IV you play a powerful sorcerer that acts as the "guiding hand" for the nation. The spells you cast draw on three mana pools: Paper Mana, Bird Mana, and Sword Mana. Bird mana is used to make peace deals, genocide cultures, and stop your people from whining about war weariness. Paper mana, in combination with a gold sacrifice, can be used to cast construction spells, in addition to making a province you gained two years ago a core part of your nation somehow. Sword mana is used for enchanting rebel factions to keep them in line. You generate mana for these pools by sucking the life essence from your monarch and his cabinet of advisors. Be careful, though, as the ones that generate the most mana tend to die rather quickly. You'll frequently see your 6/4/5 monarch die by age 30.

You'll notice that most of the spells are involved with either war or keeping your people from whining about war. Don't worry, that's by design. There's nothing to do if you aren't at war.

10/10 it's okay

Never thought that a strategy game would be the most thrilling gaming experience I have.

But scrupulous, hour long planning and carefully forging alliances and marriages, while keeping an eye on which direction rival countries are sending their diplomats to, because one wrong move can turn your plans to dust, is much more addictive than you might think. The relief you feel, after a long term plan of yours is finally set into successful motion, is not describable.

One of the few games where careful planning and thinking is actually rewarded. No simple rock-paper-scissors battles like in other strategy games. Even though my enemy may have the bigger and more advanced army, I might have won the war through logistics already.

Everything that needs to be said about this game, has actually been said already, but I just can't pass on the chance to show my appreciation for it. I'm +90hrs in, and I'm still finding new ways to play this game, everytime I start it up. It's complex, deep and rewards the player that thinks on a larger scale. One of the best purchases I made in years.

Of course I recommend it. If you plan on buying just one game and playing it until your death, this is arguably the best choice.

A must for history and strategy lovers.

For some reason, all the teachers in school acted like genocide, imperialism, and exploitation of indiginous peoples was a bad thing.

They were wrong.

----------------------------------------------------- OLD Review-----------------------------------------

If you like this: You're a good gamer that loves Strategy.

If you dont like this: You're impatient with learning games and overall suck at Strategy and plays CoD everyday.

only 9.5/10 because I cant quick scope France.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------- OLD Review-------------------------------------------------

EDIT: I am editing this review for some good reasons.

1. Paradox has released game breaking updates
2. Paradox is not doing anything about this

Imagine a big amazing painting that everyone loves and adores. The creator says "Hey I can make this better!"

And splats a huge brown splat of paint, the painting looks ... Weird but still amazing.

And he goes " Man people love this so much I should make it better again!"

And goes ahead and dumps a whole gallon of vomit colored paint.

Now the painting looks .... Bad, but still in the areas untouched by the filth ... Amazing still.

This represents what happend to this game. If you can get around the vomit colored paint the represents the poorly thought out updates then you can enjoy this.

A good game, bad Devs.

Oh hey there homework and college applications. Whats that, you want me to finish you? AHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA! Im sorry, but it sounds like you want me to stop my game of EU4, and I can't do that right now cause I'm in the middle of colonizing the new world as Brittany.

10/10 would waste more time on.

Third best game I've ever played in my life. Tied with Destiny, and only beaten by Civ V and Civ VI (Out now! :D). I know what you're going to say... "This is better than Civ for blah blah details plot." But I just like Civ better, dunno why. Just do. Anyways, this game is great.

+ Innovative
+ Fun and inticing Gameplay
+ Keeps you coming back, because you always feel like you can do better, or something different.
+ Good historic accountabilty... To a point.
+ Music that fits the situation, and makes you have amazing feelings. (Or you can just listen to Grooveshark, Whichever Floats your Goat.)

- Graphics could be better
- Steep learning curve. Watch TheSolarGamer's Denmark playthrough. You learn alot when you yell at the screen.
- Europe actually was poor and had not-good tech in 1444, and up untill the discovery of the America's it was more or less a 3rd world Back-water place, but I guess this is good enough.

+Scandinavia and Hungary colonize South America, and Hungary fights a war with the French, Tuscans, and Dutch across the world alone? Yes please. (I took over Australia as Hungary. No way does this game get better than seeing Hungary be Westernized and in control of most of the world, and the Ottomans under control of Egypt.)

+ Funny happenings of all kinds!
